10 Common Mistakes on Football Manager

I have done a bunch of deep dives about Football Manager recently. The training videos, the scoutings videos, the tactical breakdowns of the different streamer showdowns. We are back to doing a classic FM22 tutorial. Sometimes, you just have to get into your favorite type of video, and I have a google doc that when it fills up I can make a new FM list guide video thinkgs, and the google doc finally filled up.
As always I try to touch on many of the different aspects of football manager, the scouting, the dynamics, the tactics, and the winning matches. Winning matches is kind of important. May this list of tips and tricks guide you to more wins that you previously had, may it carry you to great Football Manager success. Even if that doesn’t happen, hopefully you are thoroughly entertained by the video!

I’m not sure how I feel about Zealand…on one hand I like his videos and appreciate his valuable advice. On the other hand he’s American. For an Englishman, taking advice from an American about football just feels wrong on multiple levels!! JK (kind of) loving the videos and the advice 👍

Not only is this good FM advice, but it doubles as dating advice.
Fun fact about the kit. It initially didn’t have the badge and Dortmund fans hated that the clubs badge wasn’t on it so badly that the board went to puma and requested that they put the badge on afterwards

The work permit hints helped, I got an extremely promising left winger from South Africa he could even play as a wing back. Problem was the work permit situation, loaning him out actually helped as he went to a Franch club and is starting every game with them and now he's got his permit after returning to the club.
May I suggest adding timestamps to your videos? Would help a lot...
You should just watch the video repeatedly until you know it word by word. That way, you won’t need any timestamps. You’ll just know it.

The moving players to affiliates is a good option as opposed to more regular loans. Out of curiosity are the commercial affiliates actually worth getting? Is it possible to see how much revenue they generate and if they effect sponsership or other less predicatable revenue?
I know they def do affect the scouting knowledge because I signed lots of wonderkids from portugal without the league loaded up (i partnered up with Benfica)

Biggest mistake - Not using the Zealand Newgen facepack
Maybe when its not so much of a pain to install and has to be constantly refreshed during a save to keep working.
After the last game update it stopped working for me ☹️

What is/how significant is the difference between a player being loaned or moved to an affiliate in a lower division vs playing u23/u21 football? Is there a tangible way to compare the strength of the league without going through each team and just checking yourself?
SI needs to add an option to set player training load to what your physios recommend automatically. There is an option in that page to set them to physio recommendation, but you’d have to do that daily which is just silly.
@@williamcross210 no, it’s not. The physio recommendation is based on injury risk and condition. The automatic setting is based only on condition
I think add a setting for age groups too. I’m sure it was tested that u23’s develop better on normal intensity and o23’s develop better on double
@@slipknottin I know, you should be able to do that on the player profile with just 2 clicks from your squad list. It would male the profile too convoluted though.
Z if you remove your U18's do your youth intake players automatically join your u23's?

Been caught by Number 10. loaned a guy in for 0% wage contribution and couldn’t register him in 2nd division of Spain because I wasn’t paying him at least 2.5k a week
Usually if I buy a player who I plan to loan I just add a loan back clause

With playing time, if the player is in a bad run of form, this can be used to suggest a lower playing time successfully… persuade will work as there is an option about form as a reason to reduce playing time. They’ve always accepted this as they don’t have a foot to stand on!
with the work permit tip, I play QPR in a fm22 xbox edition save and have a lot of issue with work permits as I dont have the finances even in the prem to bring in players who are locks for a work permit. How do you bring someone in to loan out instantly even with a failed work permit? Thanks
If you’re not using your youth/reserve teams, is it still worth hiring goalkeeper or fitness coaches, bc they can train the main team.
i have to disagree about using your reserve team. it's absolutely vital for managing fitness and match sharpness and bringing back players from long term injuries, and the coaching staff are available for all three of your squads. unless you're really struggling for money it's a huge weapon
Yeah, I use and abuse the reserve team. WHEN there is one available. Some leagues like the Serbian league have no reserve league, so it's either U18s (where no player above 19 is allowed) or you are fricked.
Let young players playing on reserve teams help them to progress as they were on loan?

Regarding #8. If I want to sell the player and have accepted the bid from another club I always send the player down to the reserves or youth team. I can't for sure say it works every time but I sure feel like the players are much more likely to accept that he is done in your club and accepts to leave. Because when I'm not sure if I want to sell the player or not I keep them in the first squad and it's much more common for me that these players reject contract offers from bidding clubs.

I rate the shirt you are wearing greatly as I'm doing a BAN save in Gibraltar. Mons Calpe have been average for most part, finishing 6th (in a league of 11 teams).

How does loaning out players compare to having a B-team in the league structure?
For example Jong Utrecht, and similar type of teams. Because I mostly stick my not-yet-homegrown players in my B-team, winning Keuken Kampioen Divisie year on year with my U21 foreign wonderkid army, while the homegrown players get loaned out.
Having B-team in professional league structure not in U-21 or reserve leugue such as Jong ajax, R. Madrid castilla is good for your youth team. That means you dont need affiliate club to loan young players to increase their playing time. You only need affiliate club for scouting and commercial purpose.

Be careful with not filling B teams or amateur teams while having a full U18 or youth team. Those B teams will play "ghost" matches in some leagues/countries and if they aren't full they'll use u18s for them. Even if those u18s played the day before or have played 2 matches in the same week. I had a promising 16yo ST played over 300 min in the same week because I didn't have a ST on the B team and they were playing games that don't show up anywhere other than reports-form on the players that played in it.

Number 10! I get burned on registration rules even when I know them because of a misinterpritation or I got excited over that new wonderkid.
What about the second team? Many clubs has the second team locked into playing in a league below (Or lower if it's doing badly). I usually try to make a one player pr. position second team. They can use the younger players if anyone is hurt.
Loan out the "weaker" players, so you are sure who get to play every week on the second team, only loan out quality prospects to other teams in your league.
One exception is loaning out a player you want to force playing in a different position than the second team coach would choose for them.
Is it better to play your u19 players at reserve team than in u19 league?
The best way is to have U23 who played in 2nd division regularly, you can loan 25 youngsters at once there winning the 2nd tier league every year and develop your players

I use tighter marking with narrow defending and high press in order to reduce spaces, force mistakes and time with the ball for my opponents. So far is working
Providing tactic advice would only help someone if their team was the same as yours. To Z’s point in the video, asking a bad team with slow and unathletic players across the board to gegenpress extremely urgently while also tight marking is a recipe for disaster if they are playing a better more athletic team.
Haven’t watched yet, but one big mistake is applying for jobs while you still have one. Lucked my way into the Tottenham job (from Preston) and was top of the League by December. Squad is firing on all cylinders.
Then the Chelsea job opens up. Being the curious guy I am, I want to see how big their transfer budget is. I applied for the job, purely out of curiosity, with no intention to leave Tottenham.
They fired me faster than I could say “snickerdoodle”. It still haunts me to this day. Could’ve achieved great things with that Tottenham team.
Just reload the save; not sure why that would be an issue.
@@Ren_1090 made it a rule never to reload, for matches or whatsoever. Takes away from the realism for me. I accept anything that comes.
Besides, if I had reloaded, I wouldn’t be at my current team with multiple wonderkids and the challenge of beating Bayern to the Bundesliga before I resign. It’s all for the best
@@zebra7578 yep I’ve been close to being fired. I found that it really comes down to how long you’ve been at the club / favorite icon or legend status as to how upset they get if applying for a job while at a current club.
@@SimersFM Question! Does job security have anything to do with it as well? Would you get away with it if you had a bad season or do you have to be doing well and winning trophies to get away with that?
Yesterday, I did the same thing in my save with Pachuca (Mexican League) I applied and was interviewed for AC Milan job and got away with it, they even offered me a new contract to deter interest from AC Milan! I guess you need to have a great relationship with the board so they don't get that upset! In my save, I've been there 4,5 years and won 7 trophies so yeah my job is pretty safe (tbf it's too easy to win in that league)

Since the board isn’t willing to expand the number of coaches for my senior team I utilize the u23 coaching slots despite having no player in the u23 except a couple of senior squad players not featuring regularly. I’m kinda “Brentfording” it by not having them in a league instead playing friendlies against similar or higher repetitive teams a day after the senior teams weekend game

I wish the devs make it possible to stop players retiring. I got Thomas Muller retiring at 34, like wtf?! They should make it possible where if one was to offer them a lot of money it could convince them to backtrack on their retirement plans.
Biggest mistake is wanting FM to be a subscription service.

i didnt even watch the video so i can blindly say that there isnt one crucial mistake that all of us make while playing. STARTING TO PLAY THIS GAME :)
I love to loan players out. I will only loan players out for 6 months at a time and review his progression before I accept an offer for another 6 months renewal deal. After I've built my u23s, those that aren't close to the first team, don't fit the way I play, I loan out with a view to make a profit after 2 seasons minimum depending on development.

Me with a team in the top league that has been on 'fight bravely against relegation' the last 3 years despite being in European competition: "So what if my team is neither of those things?" (Seriously, despite some out of my mind god-level recruitment, my team is still literally all at the bottom on the comparison window, my custom tactic and team atmosphere are the only thing holding us together)
Forgetting to untick the box "exclude own players" when using the newgan program to give newgens faces :)
I never know whether to have my good youngsters (under 18) to loan them out to lower league affliates or just keep them in my U21 setup. Or even bring them to the senior team and just make them available for the U21 games.
What about making players available for youth squads to get them playing time instead of loaning them out?
I usually offer my 18 year olds with no playing time to every single club in the top flight if I'm an established team. Usually at least one of them ends up bidding for the player even if there was no interest.
I make sure to send them for 2 full seasons though, with a recall option, so they have time to settle and train better.
My fm mistakes is that I can't stop buy great players !!! Those Damm South america players !!!!! After I used your scout way from region to nation i get soooooo many good players
13:05 I once had a player reject a contract after they said, I will burn the club dosn, if you reject the offer for double my Transfer Value.
Only loan players out to clubs predicted for finish top 8 of their league. Much more likely to play well and improve quicker
When I look at this i learn that buying new fms seem to much work. I stick to the fm i had not played for years , the 2012.
I did at 1 point use my u23s as a money making tactic a Tuesday night friendly at home used to bring in an extra 10k a month or so but si patched it so I couldn't make any money off it
Once a player makes an apperance in the swiss league they are registeted for the entire season ever if they are sold. I wish i knew this before i accepted a bid for a key player then not being able to register a replacement.

A fun fact about rules: In FM, Brazil have two nations that have his players conseiderer as a nationals strightfoward. Syria and Haiti. So on that we have a Football academy called Perolas Negras that works in haitians Football that plays in the regular Football pyramid (the second division of Rio de Janeiro state, if i'm renember well).

You can transfer list and move them to under 23 to force a player to leave the club. Just make them mad
Anyone else ever had a bug where on actual playing time it reads surplus’s to requirements even though they are starting a lot and the player says he is happy with being a regular starter but also keeps handing in transfer request because he isn’t playing 🤦🏻♂️ sometimes I hate FM
Generally if it reads surplus to requirements it means you have set that by transfer listing the player at some point. Once you in transfer a list a player you need to additionally readjust their playing time expectation
@@SimersFM no that was the first thing I checked. The game had deffo bugged out on different pages where you can find the same info about actual playing time it was saying different things for this one player and like I said he was a regular starter and I only agreed squad player.

Uhm huuh, how did you offer a contract to that "Balaz" guy, walk away because you couldn't pay him, sell a player, and offer a new contract again?? After you walk away they are not willing to do business with you anymore. And to sell a player in between, it takes a few days, but the game insist you to finish the contract offer forcing you to walk away.

Great video! However, there is one more thing that people should be aware of especially when they start a game.
Always check your promises!!!
Go to Home>Promises and see who expects what.
If you ignore them you can lose a good player very easily.
