Unboxing Tennessee: What It's Like Living In Tennessee

- Is Tennessee all a bunch of rednecks?
Does everybody in Tennessee listen to country music?
And does everyone in Tennessee have a truck with a gun rack?
We’ll answer those questions and a whole lot more. So grab your moonshine and yer huntin dog, we’re gonna unbox the state of Tennessee!
Well would you look at this. It’s a good ole fashioned fox hunt. The dogs are set loose to and then they try to find the scent of a fox. When they find a fox, the guys on horses will shoot it. It’s kind of an elite social status thing in Tennessee, and the tradition goes way back in this state’s history.
But not everyone in Tennessee is a fox hunter. In fact, the tradition is sort of dying out here. That’s because Tennessee isn’t the same state it once was. A lot of this state’s once proud traditions are kinda going away in many areas. Which is a shame.
But more on that later. To get a complete overview of the state of Tennessee, we need to look at the state from a higher level, and then drill down into each region to learn more.
This is Tennessee. It’s a very long state, and an oddly shaped one, too. Tennessee borders 8 other states. That’s the most of any other state, except Missouri, which also borders 8 other states.
As you’ll see, the state can roughly be divided up into three separate areas. West Tennessee, Middle Tennessee and East Tennessee. These are called the Grand Divisions. Each region is way different than the other part, and the people who live in each region all have different backgrounds and cultures. Which makes Tennessee so special.
We'll talk about Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga and more.

Southern charm is just a facade! They hate outsiders! Most of the south hate people from other states! If you’re not from that state!
Tennessee is so underrated, it is fun, cheap, plenty of safe places.

I moved to Tennessee from the North 50 years ago. It is absolutely different and took quite a while to become acclimated to the way things work. I had never even heard of a "dry county". Alcohol at a wedding reception was unheard of. When you pass a stranger on the road you "throw your hand up" in greeting. The South is a different place and has different ways. After 50 years of reflection I believe it is those oddities that make it charming. I will never leave.
In KS we do the 'one finger combine wave', it is a friendly index finger, btw.
@@tlockerk Actually when you get into the country in TN it is exactly the same. You don't even take your hands off the steering wheel. Just raise your index finger to say Hi!
Being from the Northeast, I too never heard of a dry county until I visited family in East Texas back in 1976. I always thought it to be hypocritical. No one wanted booze sold in my uncle's county. Yet you would drive over to the next county, buy it, and bring it back for your private consumption at the golf lodge.
Tennessee also has higher crime rates too am from a state that would be considered north from Tennessee too am from Indiana. And i must say Indiana is safer.

Good to hear. I'm moving to Knoxville next month and am looking forward to "more" friendly people than I've found out west and the D.C. area. . .I'm also NOT going to bring the issues other out-of-staters bring like the liberalism/socialism.

Heck yea
I was born and raised in Nashville and in my late 40's have lived pretty much my entire life in the middle TN area. You did a really good job of describing TN and it's various regions and you are quite right that they are all considerably different culturally. I also have to agree with your commentary on Nashville. I won't lie, I'm heartbroken over what has happened and continues to happen to Nashville. I don't want to discourage folk from moving to this state or city, but that's not really what's happening. The culture of Nashville and downtown Nashville has been absorbed somehow (almost overnight it seems) into the Borg Collective (Star Trek) of another, alien/foreign civilization and culture. Downtown Nashville used to be a really nice place. I made the mistake about a year and a half ago of taking my 6 and 8 year old children to downtown Nashville on a Saturday morning at 10am to see the pedestrian bridge, river and Fort Nashboro which they'd never seen. As we crossed the bridge to downtown to go to the Fort, I was appalled at the environment I had brought my children into. It simply wasn't appropriate for them.... at 10am on Saturday morning people!! It was almost like, or maybe just like taking my young children into Mardi Gras... I would NEVER have had any concerns of things like that 10-15 years ago. Nashville has now become the home of people with little to no morals, little to no courtesy, little to no southern TN friendliness and respect, and I hate it. Though I do not hate my state, the shift in culture, the crazy increase in population (over 700 people are moving to middle TN every.single.week...), gentrification, hipsters who despise real native Tennesseans (check Nashville forums and see their selfish, hateful, disrespectful attitudes and comments on this) and more have me wondering what to do. Younger people than me are moving to the area, buying homes, demolishing them and building $500,000 - $1.5M houses and driving the cost of everything up beyond the local native's ability to absorb. Taxes in Davidson County are INSANE due to their mismanagement of tax dollars over years... I'm educated with a degree in applied science, I'm a family man, I'm a deep thinker, I'm respectful to others who agree or disagree, but I grieve what is going on in my hometown and I'm concerned about what the future holds here.
Liberals are like cancer cells.
They go to red states like California which was red until 92... ruin it... cost of living skyrocket... then run away from their ruined state, and spread to red states with lower cost of living to corrupt it and make it blue.
Say it as it is.
The future of Nashville will be the same as Memphis as it passed the tip point apex in 0217, if you want to know how to keep a city safe/clean and family friendly then I suggest that you look to a very special city just outside of Birmingham Alabama,it's so secret that I won't mention it's name here, but if interested do a little research.
Now as far as Birmingham Alabama goes Nashville has a way to go before it's as bad as Birmingham Alabama, Birmingham Alabama is now the most dangerous city in America for violence for cities of two hundred thousand, the reason is varied, but one of the biggest contributions to this violence is because they just simply arrest the criminal then turn them loose back onto the street, add to this drugs gangs, and cartel thug's that have moved into the city.
If you're going to Birmingham I suggest you go locked cocked and loaded or just go on thru with out stopping.
Very true, I live in south west Tennessee close to the Mississippi border, and although I love the music scene in Nashville, I would just as soon stay home and avoid the craziness that has taken over the city. When you get that many people moving in to an area, it starts to lose its cultural center. It grows too, big too fast and much of what we knew as kids in the 60,s 70s and 80s gets lost.

Born and raised in West Nashville and agree with you 100%. Davidson county is f’d. Way too many people here now with a very strange amount of attitudes etc. Downtown has turned into an absolute joke. I NEVER go down there unless I’m seeing a show at the Ryman or Bridgestone.
Obviously, you did not actually SEE East Tennessee. So much more history and beauty beyond the tourist crap. Moved here from S FL over 20 yrs ago. Never looked back.
I’m thinking of doing the same thing, except I live in Northeast FL now.

Yeah, even Scotty Kilmer moved here to Tennessee, from Texas 🤓
I moved to jonesborough tn from central Florida love it here
@@drewryan6632 I moved here from NYC in 2005. Nashville is just awful now, it's been ruined for 5 years but this past year was NUTS. You MUST have a full time job to endure it here now, there is nothing to do but "family" activities, your job, bars and golfing or outdoor things (in cool weather, you can't be outdoors from June through September). I now own a one million dollar home, I call it my wooden tent, because it's a 1200 sq ft SHACK. The land is now more exspensive than Palo Alto. I wouldn't move here if I were you, I would try Cincinatti or Cleveland before Nashvile. I spent a week in Cincinnati it is so beautiful. But as of Covid, Nashville died, it won't be back for years except for pricey real estate. I would do one of the "open" red states, Florida, Oklahoma or Texas. Nashville went full blue libtard, I have counted 10 homes near mine with BLM signs, all those homes are worth over 1 million bucks. At least 5 homes are people who moved here from LA during covid, they like it so much they are staying. People are wearing masks on breezy 50 degree days it's just horrible. I may relocate out to bible country 2 hours from Nashville, where it's more like it used to be in town. There are professional musicians all over the entire state , not just in Nashville.
I've lived in Tennessee since I was eight years old, never knew or even met anyone who hunted foxes.
BTW, it's spelled Murfreesboro, not Murphreesboro.🙄

I call it Murfreesbelly where all the yellow bellies are. Just kidding and not true! Murfreesboro I think is a nice place with a lot to offer and including jobs and lower costs for a place to live.
Didn't mention it in the video, but Oak Ridge, TN (outside Knoxville) is where they worked toward developing the atomic bomb and was a production site for the Manhattan Project. It is a very interesting area full of history.
Good info!
I think the Tennessee Valley Authority (series of dam’s ) on the eastern side was created to provide power for the development of the Manhattan Project.
@@judd_s5643 That would seem logical. Oak Ridge used most of the electricity from the Fontana Dam complex, although a significant amount was also used by the Alcoa aluminum factories to support the war effort. However, the TVA's creation pre-dates the Manhattan Project. The TVA was chartered in 1933, while the inception of the MP started approximately in 1939. BTW, I lived in Knoxville in the early 2000's: loved every minute of my time there. Tennessee is a wonderful state.
I visited Oak Ridge in 2010. Nice place.
If you ever visit Oak Ridge, Big Ed’s Pizza is a good spot for food!!
It is a pretty good summary. One thing missed was a mention about the TVA, Oak Ridge National Lab and the Manhattan project. It's a pretty interesting part of the states history. it is a reason there are many well educated people in Knoxville area along with the University of Tennessee.

It's so sad. I can't express how awful it is to see the rural home of my childhood start to have suburbs pop up all around it.
I think that's everywhere were overpopulated
Ain't that the truth. You can't go to Knoxville anymore without sitting in traffic.
Tennessee is probably the most expensive southern state. They used to get people trapped by stating no income tax but everything else is really expensive for the south. North Carolina is expensive as well. Health care is the bulk of it as they are over the national average.
@Kenny Sasso
Well as far as nicest nature....west TN has nothing nice. I would say northern GA and the west half of NC has about the same if not better. I do believe NC is more prosperous than TN as far as getting paid more. You don't make much in TN for what they charge you. SC is nice and cheap but you have to go to west SC near the mountain range. Middle TN to eastern TN is becoming touristy. Maybe that's another reason why prices keep going up faster than wages. Almost everywhere I go in TN seems like someone is on meth or heroin. I do realize they were one of the hardest hit states for that. However I am a fan of the surrounding areas of Chattanooga's scenery. It's like your in a fishbowl wrapped with small mountains, plus you got the beautiful TN river that runs through town.
@Kenny Sasso Nature here is nothing special. And its EXPENSIVE. So unless you make a lot of money you will live in poverty here.
Tennessee is not expensive for the south. Virginia, Florida and North Carolina are way more expensive!
@@tomp6685 Nope. TN and NC are the most expensive. I dont count Virginia as the south as they are far left with their governor.

It used to be nice. Not anymore.
I am descended from the mountain folk East Tennessee. Johnson County to be precise. I resent what was said about for eastern Tennessee being what you said it was. I can’t even say it. This part of Tennessee was heavily unionist during the Civil War. In fact, Johnson County voted 777 to 111 against succession.
Part of the Union strategy was to capture Chattanooga because they could reliably utilize the railroad in eastern Tennessee to bring supplies south because a large part of the that area was pro-Union.
How did you like Johnson City? He kinda skipped over that area along with Greenville and I was looking forward to getting his take on it. I’ll be living around there for work next year.

Johnson City is also home to East Tennessee State University, an R2 research university with one of the few medical schools in the state. To classify this area as "hillbilly" and ignorant is a disservice to ETSU.

I've lived in East TN my whole life. It's a beautiful, comfortable place to live for the most part. It's not all glamorous, but I've rarely felt unhappy at my home.I moved from a small, rural county about 15 years ago to Knoxville. At first I loved the convenience of being 5-10 minutes to anything I could need, but now with the area blowing up it's getting to be too much. I see myself moving back to a smaller county on the outskirts of Knoxville in the next 3-5 years, so I can have room to breath!
I've just now started watching your videos 2 days ago and I must say, they're very eye-opening in a good and bad way. Good for me because I'm extremely happy I was born and raised in East Tennessee and just bought my first house here. Bad because with the decline and worsening conditions of other states, I can see people fleeing here to live and trying to mess up the diversity and unique nature TN has. Knoxville is getting bigger and it's no longer that place where you'd run into someone you know anymore. I moved away from it for that reason 4 years ago. Meanwhile, local news has been steadily bragging about how TN has become a very popular place to move to with a huge influx of people yearly.
Been living in Memphis for a few years now. Everything he said is pretty spot on. Memphis definitely has it rough parts of town, but it's still been able to hold on to it's identity through all of the struggles. There is definitely a lot to do here and plenty of culture. BBQ is fantastic here as well! It's been growing in the last few years due in part to booming biomedical sector and efforts by the city government to try and change things around. If y'all are driving through, definitely stop by. You'll be surprised by what this city has to offer.

Great job, Nick! I honestly had no idea Nashville had become the Austin of the East. I did, however, predict that Dollywood was in the little area you had labeled as Tourists. I can speak from experience that the folks in Memphis really do love their barbecue. I remember getting some barbecued pork there, and they had a local term for pulled pork: sliced pork. Been here 15 years I love this state originally from the Midwest . Very nice weather ,people are great just all around great state !
You forgot a very big point about TN, they TAX groceries! Most of the "no state tax" states tax you in other ways.
Very true, people fail to realize that states like Florida and Tennessee don't have income tax have to make it up somewhere.
Tennessee basically relies on the consumption tax structure. No personal income tax, low property taxes and inexpensive vehicle registration doesn't burden those in the lower income status. It is when you buy things you pay higher sales taxes than other states. Tennessee has a 6% sales tax but most every county has their own add-on tax. Between state and local sales tax the total can push 10%. The state limits the amount the counties can assess but most push the limit. The county taxes also top-out when you reach a certain limit, like maybe the first $3,000 dollars.
If you are a low earner or retired Tennessee can be an ideal tax state to live in. If you like to dine-out 3 times a week, buy a new car every two years and constantly supplement your wardrobe, you might find that you are paying a lot of tax.
I'd rather pay it than income tax ANY DAY! I love TN. Lots more gun racks per capita in ND in my experience.
Thanks for the video! You do a great job! Hilarious and informative

The mountain dew made in Tennessee is not the same Mountain Dew we know today. Today's Mountain Dew was made in Marion, Virginia
Mountain Dew was first bottled in Johnson City at Tri-City Beverage, the same company who now bottles Dr. Enuf. Nice video Nick! I like that you using map more time to show the cities! Greetings from HUngary
Hey Jason! 🇭🇺
Moved to East Tennessee about 24 years ago. Live in a small town surrounded by mountains. South east of Johnson City... Beautiful, quiet, love it here. Born and raised in NE Ohio. Moved south when my husband was stationed at Ft. Gordon Georgia. He was from Erwin TN... some years later moved to N. Carolina, then here to Tennessee. Feels more like home here than anywhere else.
nice :)
Hello gorgeous woman , how are you doing ?
Nice experience
I’ve been waiting on this video for a very long time!!! .... “y’all”
boom!
All "Y'ALL"...😁
I almost lost it at the end when I heard the tune from the old Cal Worthington (and his "dog" Spot) commercials. Great job!
You know, I really like all of the clips you sneak in from back in the day. Brings me back to my childhood. Ahh memories. So much nostalgia. 😊 And poor Mappy! People can be so mean in the comments. So much of us love Mappy!!! 🤗
Mappy gets grief but you have no idea what people say what never makes it to the front page. Or maybe now you do haha
Hello gorgeous, how are you doing?
Thank you Nick for this video, you made it at the perfect time as I have just been accepted into the University of Memphis and am strongly considering attending. I live in California and I know how you feel about that.
Good luck in whatever choice you make Stevan!! And congrats!!! 🎉
University of Memphis is a great college to go to. I live near it and a lot of people from my school go there. People there are also really nice and will try to make you feel at home. If you decide to go you wont regret it 😁
Congrats! Great University.
@@NickJohnson Thank You, I appreciate it.
@@trinityodom182 thank you for telling me. I’ve heard the people from Memphis are very nice
Tennessee is a wonderful state Grew up there !
The moonshine & huntin' dog intro had me cracking up 🤣
Hey Nick, not to be a troll but Mountain Dew was not created in Knoxville, but a little smaller town 100 miles east of there in Johnson City.
I like the sound of that 'Tennessee' song.... best music you've done. Lol
Indeed
Great Tennessee song i wish it was longer I loved it
@@AdrienneWaldobrown yes for real
What Tennessee song? Rocky Top?
9:32 I live in Georgia but my high school teacher is from Johnson city and does not fall in the weird mountain folk category
Johnson city has a large medical community for education and work in the medical field. A nice family oriented town too.
Johnson City doesnt count . Its not typical of the other parts of the state . I am pretty sure they are proud of that , too.
Is there inbred folks up in them hills
Oh yeah, beautiful waterfalls, mountain climbing, hiking and much much more.😝
So true Anthony.
Good job! You probably know I live in Memphis (not the ghetto part). Yep, there's good and bad in Tennessee, but there's some purty scenery too. Yes haw, ya`ll!
I've been learning American English over the last few years and your videos are very helpful to figure out American culture. Thank you Nick!
Hey Sheri 😘😘
@@NickJohnson Hi from Istanbul! 🤗🌷
Great video and song! The Tennessean people are truly friendly and nice. Was going to live there and build a house, but summer temperatures are horrendously hot🥵, so that was a big Nope. Sweet Tea and Pecan pie 🤤 are Awesome!
It's not THAT hot :)
@@NickJohnson when I got back from iraq in early spring of 2006, that summer it was 110 degrees 😳😯🥵
It does get hot but 110 degrees is an anomaly. Mphs is hot, but this summer wasn't so bad. 2000 we had a drought and it was very hot.
Depends on the year and the part of the state. East Tennessee can have hot days but it doesn't usually stay that way day after day. Summer 2020 was for the most part mild.
Good We’re full
Very nice job! I miss a channel like yours about Canada.
Lived in middle TN for 3 years, you did a great job! You forgot "Old Hickory" though!
Oops ❤️😘
It’s gone ghetto....... sorry
Music is pretty diverse in Tennessee, depending on where you live! In West Tennessee, particularly Memphis, people are singing the blues of soul and rock and roll! Of course, country music is relevant there, as long as it has a rockabilly sound! Country music is definitely relevant enough in Middle Tennessee, because Nashville is the home of country music! Of course, other types of music are relevant in Middle Tennessee, but country music is king over there! Country music is even more relevant in East Tennessee, but although Middle Tennessee has the polished Nashville sound of country, East Tennessee has more of an old school type of country music! Particularly mountain music, or bluegrass, if you'd prefer!
I live in East TN and classic rock is pretty common over here too
@@notimportant4994 Thank 103.5 WIMZ in Knoxville for that.
Knoxville was beautiful in the snow this winter.
Mappy is great. Thanks again for another frank examination of one of our states.
Ok!
Downtown Nashville used to have this green strip on the sidewalk and all you had to do was follow it, to see everything worth seeing. It was very quiet and safe back in the day.
To all of you west coasters looking for a better deal you are welcome to Tennessee just dont bring your "politics" with you.
U got that right..Tell'em!!!!
Or attitudes.
Guys I think the people who are coming here from the West Coast and the North East are the conservatives from those areas. At least that’s been my experience.
That’s right
@@charlesbolton8471 I hope so..
moved here three years ago- thought you covered it well
I grew up in Nashville (Chattanooga born). At some point it became too crowded, and we bought a place about 50 miles southeast in the woods. I still love Nashville for an occasional party or concert.

How u gonna do a video on Tennessee & Nashville & don't mention the Titans??
Oops
They finally got a MLS Soccer team Nashville SC, and also you forgot that they have an NHL team here the Nashville Predators.
I am Colts fan so I am ok with that.
@@joeneri150 AND THEY HAVE A RACCOON AS A MASCOT NOT A DINOSAUR
He doesn't have to list every sports team. The Titans and Predators are a smaller part of the Nashville entertainment culture than UM and the Grizzlies are in Memphis, or NASCAR is in Bristol.
Eastern TN, from the Cumberland Plateau to the Blue Ridge Mountains is beautiful. TN offers one of the lowest costs of living and one of the lowest overall tax burdens. Great state.
Not lowest for renting.
born in nashville, grew up in murfreesboro & now live in nashville again. “it’s now hard to run into anybody who’s actually from nashville” is so true. so many people are moving here everyday and because of that the traffic is a nightmare.
Your TN song is wonderful!😂 Love some TN!
Let's hang out soon!
@@NickJohnson how are you going to talking about Johnson city and Kingsport without bringing up fast food restaurant pals
Pretty accurate on Memphis part. I lived there for 18 years and go to every part
Fun fact: rocky top is not our official fight song, our real one is called “down the field” go vols!
Anyone ever heard of Tennessee Tuxedo the cartoon character with his Walrus sidekick?
Good video and I am glad it showed up. Visited the entire state and thought Chattanooga was nice.
I need to rewatch that cartoon!!!

Good job Nick man!👍
Great video. Never clicked so fast
Legend!
Nashville looks claustrophobic AF
It is the traffic is insane
You’ve clearly never been to NYC, Chicago, or San Francisco. The population density of Nashville is tiny in comparison.
Agreed
Tennessee has so many areas that are rural and empty. They just don't have as many jobs.
I lived in Tennessee for two years. 2016-2018. I enjoyed going to Nashville. Graceland is such a beautiful home and property and then you look to the left and the right and it’s scary. 😂 The Smoky mountains are nice and there’s lots of waterfalls, caves and hikes to check out in TN. I might get to move back for the Army, the only thing I’m worried about is the tornadoes. 🌪
i dont like tornadoes either :)
Tornadoes are everywhere these days. They keep moving further north in higher numbers. While TN is nice, id check out southern MO and northen AR in the Ozarks. Beautiful bright blue springs, small mountainous areas. Alot of people forget about that region. Plus northern AR is cheaper than TN and jobs might pay a bit better.
@@PAULY-P In Tennessee yes the cost of living was low, but it didn’t make up for how poorly the pay wages are. I have a bachelor’s degree and was making $9/hr and even changed jobs and only went up a few cents to about $9.23/hr. It was ridiculous. Now I’m in California and my pay is WAY better for the same job.
@@raleemay
Yes, but isn't rent, mortgage, tax, etc more expensive? I would think California would be too expensive seeing alot of people have been fleeing it for yrs. I myself have been looking for an area to move to. I have maybe 4 areas/states im looking at and NWA (Northwest Arkansas) is one of them.
@@PAULY-P Since my husband is in the military and we rent we don’t pay that many taxes but yes rent is pretty high. I would never buy a home here, too expensive. We’re trying to figure out where we want to live when he gets out.
Bro, lol i love your channel!!!
Cool I hope you learn stuff!!
Was not expecting to see footage of my hometown Dyersburg when I clicked on this video so that was a nice surprise
Some of the most friendlyist People, but have you some transportation. Or you will have a LONG WALK to where you want to go. Really!
I've been in Murfreesboro Tenessee for about 8 months now and its pretty cool. I'd prefer living in the hills back in Kentucky. But I got to say the best thing I noticed is the no income tax on you. As a guy who would lose 23% of his paycheck to taxes living in Colorado that would then pay for more police officers to make my life harder and take another 20% of my income. I like Tenessee.
Cool video!!! Mappy dnt worry i love all your knowledge u ain’t going nowhere!!! I need a side kick like mappy!!
I live in Nashville, TN , excellent video! Right on target!
The American humorist, Ogden Nash, came from the family that founded "Nashville, TN." The Eastern, more mountainous part, has lots of guys named Zeke and Festus.
I've never met a Zeke or Festus.

Born and raised in East Tennessee and wouldn't want to be any where else. So much more history there you could have tapped into.
Tina I agree but time was a factor. Maybe one day I'll come back to history there!
Tennessee was the last state to secede, and the first state to rejoin the Union. 💥🇺🇸💥 In fact, East Tennessee wanted to rejoin as the state of "East Tennessee", like West Virginia did. 🙂
Not-based TN ☹️
A fun video, and good schtick. I’ve been looking at moving to Tennessee as a job transfer, just to get out of Oregon.
Anecdotally, TN is amazing, do it! I lived in OR before here. Also PA, NJ, FL, and TX. In my first year in TN it was so cheap I was able to pay off all the debt I acquired just trying to survive in Oregon AND save some money. 🤯 Yeah, it's that cheap. Plus hiking in the Smokies every week(it's amazing but also, only National Park that has free admission, hence the most visited). My first year here I always joked that Tennessee is more Oregon than Oregon(everyone smokes weed, everyone hikes, and everyone is into music and dogs, lol)
We’re full!!! Stay away
@@bamajaybird74 ahhhh, come on mate; ya gonna love me
@@dianakavakos6004 it’s not cheap any longer due to the mass amounts of people moving here.
