Unboxing Kentucky: What It's Like Living in Kentucky

- Does everyone in Kentucky like horses?
Is everyone in the eastern hillsides a hillbilly?
And do they all love college basketball here?
We’ll cover that stuff and even more! So get out your Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style Straight Bourbon Whiskey, we’re going to unbox the state of Kentucky.
Man this is pretty. This is the bluegrass area in Kentucky - the most well known region in the state. But Kentucky has a lot of really pretty areas in it. River gorges, mountain ranges, prairies and farmland. It’s actually one of the most ecologically diverse states in the region.
Well, actually, I should stop right there. Kentucky isn’t a state. It’s a commonwealth. Let’s get that straight. And there’s a debate as to if Kentucky is a midwestern state or a southern state. Let’s set the record straight on that TOO. Kentucky is a SOUTHERN state pal. There is no doubt about it. But it’s also kinda midwestern. Sorta.
To get a really thorough understanding of the state of Kentucky, and to get to know what each area is like, and where the best and worst parts of the state are, we should look at each various region of this commonwealth.
This is Kentucky. As you can see it’s not ALL hillbillies and rednecks and bible thumpers. Kentucky is way more than just that. In fact, by the end of this video, you’ll probably have your mind changed on how you think about Kentucky. Cause it’s got a lot more goin on that you might have thought.
We’ll begin our tour of Kentucky over here in Eastern Kentucky.

Hello Nick.
I like seeing places allover the US. Those cities are really nice skylines. Id like to ask you whether gays can live in cities like louisville or Lexington. Is that state a little tolerant or is there no place for the lgbt community?
Please note: Although you may see some people from Indiana, West Virginia and Kentucky proudly wave a Confederate flag - while spewing some nonsense about honoring and/or preserving their heritage - All three of these states FAUGHT FOR THE NORTH!
Sorry nick, you’re full of b.s ever heard of Romeo and Juliet? And also I’ve seen the same thing in every other state in the nation and around the world 🌎 as well. But love your channel and just subscribe!!
Sorry I high jacked your comment section !!!!!
Kentuckian here. It cannot be overstated how much people lose their minds over college basketball here
I'm a Kentuckian and couldn't give a rip about college basketball.
@@DM-sg3cj me either, I hate it. I have some sweet shirts but I got them cheap at a thrift store. After they bowed down a few weeks ago I’m ashamed to wear them.
@@DM-sg3cj I don’t really care about it either but still, most people here do care much more than in other states and it’s huge part of local culture there’s no denying that.

Dang straight, I am a Kentuckian and I am crazy about the Louisville Cardinals.
As a cuban person living in America I never found a better way to learn about America geography than your channel, thanks for such amazing job
Thanks I try!!
@@NickJohnson Are you going to make an Unboxing Missouri eventually? I take it you will probably have an Unboxing episode for each state. Keep up the great work!
As a Cuban...🤣
+same, greetings from Russia. I enjoy exploring US geography
I'm from ky. That was pretty good. I own property in louisville and central ky.
Scottish person here... for some reason when I think of the States I'm always drawn to Kentucky. The rolling hills are so beautiful. The mountain towns really stand out too. Values and issues seem kind of similar to certain parts of Scotland. Also the bourbon. Great video man.
you can look up the immigration records for Kentucky during the 18th and 19th century. A lot of them came from your neck of the woods and a lot of that bloodline remains unbroken. That might explain why you're drawn to this place.
You would feel at home. The Scottish heritage is strong and people look Scottish. Not just Scottish as English and Irish also occur in large numbers but Kentucky as a whole is strongly Scottish
Well hell! I hope to get I chance to come visit us in Ky. We'd love to have you.
I am a Scot too and as I was watching this I was thinking that so much of this state reminds me of Scotland!
I read somewhere that these areas were one actually the same. Scotland, Ireland, and the Appalachia area are the same geology wise and were once connected.
Kentucky born and raised. Kentucky Basketball and Jesus. The sun shines bright on my Old Kentucky Home.

I live here too

All the same with me
I've lived in many states and I can honestly say Kentucky was a bright spot in my geographical visitations. The rolling hills, friendly people, and good food were all pleasant. Overall I enjoyed my few years there. Definitely a misunderstood state.
Yep
I have been all over the US. I live in KY now. We are getting ready to move from Louisville. It is a beautiful stage with friendly people and great food.
Eastern ky where I live in the Appalachian mountains!!!🖤🥀
@@mrs.elitenugz8491I sure wish I had the opportunity to at least visit the Appalachian Mountains. I love small communities where everyone looks out for one another. I live in Louisville. We can't stand it which is why we are moving to a smaller town.
I moved for just a couple of years to Colorado but I’ve been back for years. I’ll never leave again. I’m close to Corbin. And it’s changed a lot over the years. But we still have the same good people all around. We do have some bad. I I like to think the good out weigh the bad. It’s beautiful anytime of year. ❤️❤️ I’m glad you enjoyed KY.
As a Kentuckian, I approve of this video. You did a great job of describing the state
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yes he did
I'm glad he didn't publicize our little Lake down here south of Somerset
.. And so Nick is in all his videos as well 😀 Accuracy ✨👌🏻
I'm originally from Detroit, MI but have been in Northern KY for 20 years now and I love it, its a lot slower, its more friendly, its homely, its also a state you can find land to live off grid and grow your own food and etc. Js Kentucky isn't a bad place at all to move to and start living a great life!
Hello gorgeous, how are you?
I moved here from Detroit to the NE Kentucky about 18 years ago and love it. No way will I ever leave!
I call it Greater Cincinnati/ Northern Ky. Moved here from eastern Ky as a child. Went to school in Kenton county, Ky. Mom and Dad came to give us 5 kids a better life. We worked downtown Cincinnati and retired from our jobs . Working downtown was a great safe place. Very entertaining. People from all walks of life and all races walking around and working together. There were lots of movie stars and local celebrities like Cincinnati Reds to Jerry Springer Nick Clooney,( George's dad) I followed Raquel Welsh down the street! . Beverly Hills Supper Club brought alot of people in the entertainment industry. Durung lunch time Fountain Square was a gathering place. Lots of shopping and nice restaurants all around town. We worked at careers with Proctor and Gamble, Duke Electric , AT&T, Cincinnati Bell , IRS etc.
Moved here in 2013 but had ties to Kentucky all my life. I actually can say I truly love it here.
Sweet!
As a life-long Kentuckian, from Bowling Green, I am thankful to say that I am a Kentuckian! No place I would rather live. If you like bourbon, horse racing, blue grass music, country cooking, sweet tea, college basketball, fishing and hunting, four distinct seasons, I can't think of a better place.
Don't forget Corvettes! You're from Bowling Green for crying out loud.
@@zackmeuth Heh, Corvettes are o.k. You can still be a native Kentuckian and not be a fan of Corvettes. Sweet tea and gravy n biscuits are much more important.
Mammoth Cave, Cumberland Falls with the moon-bow, fishing Boating.
@@zackmeuth the new corvettes are a thing of beauty. I see them out and about near my neighborhood (Lexington) and just love them. Seeing some Toyota Supra’s popping up as well.
Bowling Green too but move towards Smith Grove in the sticks
I’m from KY and I can say you did very well, I’m glad someone is willing to put a lot of the stereotypes to bed. This state truly has more to offer than many believe.
I'm hoping nobody starts to realize that... those stereotypes are keeping the people who made California what it is out of Kentucky.
Don't offer nothing in Kentucky .
As a Kentuckian, I want to thank you for showing my state is more than just Bluegrass, KFC, & Hillbillies. I hope you can make some more videos over Kentucky to mention some other towns and sub-regions
Ok Jordan!
please dont this is soooooo boring
You state is horrible poverty, lack of jobs, adults, and much worse, children with no hope, no education, and no future. I've been in city slums that were better than large areas of Kentucky.
One of the best moves I've ever made. Not just Kentucky , but in the heart of it. Got a job, place to live, and there is no where the amount of violence here as where I lived before. Thank you Kentucky.
Somewhere near Cave City, Ky.
@TimmyMakesMusic he's probably never even been here
Grew up in Oregon and now I've been in Louisville for about 5 years, before moving here admittedly had a lot of negative misconceptions about Kentucky. Basically thought that it was poor and under educated. My time in Louisville really beat a lot of that pretentious Northwest attitude out of me Kentucky has mostly been a great place to live and most folks have been very welcoming!
Great people they are
It seems a lot like the SW Ozarks area of MO
which also reminds me of OR
I love how beautiful Kentucky is. I never wanna leave it. I’d be pained to leave my home.
I love unboxing, can't wait for unboxing Alaska.
Recently Ive really wanted to maybe move to Maine or Alaska when I’m older. Sparsely populated places, cold, and really really pretty environments
Good luck, it’s a whole different region...........
Sure right about that 👍. Y'all can please subscribe to my CZcams channel @iamrojoun. Show some love
I don't believe he did Wisconsin yet.
Oh don’t copy me 😂 but yes me either
Shockingly accurate description of the state. I have lived in Western Kentucky my entire 63 years and retired as a state trooper and lawyer. I know my way around pretty well and I think you did an outstanding job breaking down the different areas. Basketball is serious business and you are either blue ( UK )or red ( U of L ). It seems like everyone hates Duke. 🙂
I absolutely love my state. There’s so much to offer wherever you go. Its clearly not all what the stereotypes say. It’s so beautiful.
Big props for not saying "Louie-Ville".
Amen 😔🙌
Here in the nexus of the universe of Bowling Green, KY, we say Lou-uh-vull. Not Lou-e-ville- or Lewis-ville.
I'm from KY and I've always pronounced it like that 😂😂😂
@@thebetteratacker1 A lot of people do, and for all I know it might be correct. Kentuckians have a lazy tongue though and we will shave off any syllables possible.
@@thebetteratacker1 From the center of the universe, here in Bowling Green.
Eastern Kentuckian here! Very nice video. We live in an incredibly beautiful state that is often misrepresented. We definitely have lots of areas to improve on, but I couldn't imagine calling anywhere else home.
Nice Lauren ❤️❤️

Cool!
@@NickJohnson Hi Nick 🙏 Can you do some unboxing of Canadian states?
Kentucky is so much better than i thought. Great video Nick! Marilyn, get well soon, God bless. ❤👍😊
She's on the mend ;)
It's culturally a Southern state, but it was actually neutral in the Civil War.
It's really a little of both. Both southern and midwestern based businesses have a presence in Kentucky.
@@dvferyance perfect example! West Virginia and Virginia are the same
KY along with MO and MD were slave states that chose to officially stay in the Union rather than secede and join the Confederacy. Like MO and MD, some people in KY chose to support and fight for the Confederacy while others chose to support and fight for the Union. Obviously not leaving the Union proved to be a wise decision as the border states were able to avoid the drama of Reconstruction following the Civil War.
Kentucky stayed neutral during the civil war and they chose to hold on to their southern roots and identity. 💯
There is a strong Midwestern influence, especially in the Owensboro-Henderson area, where I'm from.
I grew up in Lexington Kentucky. Iwent to elementary, high school, and college in Lexington Kentucky. Good job on the video. You got it right on.
Mitch McConnell does not “live” in Louisville. He has a condo here that he visits a few times a year.

Born and raised in central Kentucky. I couldn't care less about horses. I really don't care about UK basketball. I love this state, and I think it's a great place to live. All the stereotypes aggravate me because most of them are false. Nice job on my home state Nick! 👍😀
I was to Kentucky once, best trip of my life. I hope I can come back some day.

Born and raised in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky and proud of it.
❤️👍
In south east KY at the Red River Gorge there is also one of the most well known rock climbing areas in all of the US. Northern Lexington is starting to become gentrified as more young middle class people seek more affordable homes and outside developers to bring in more amenities such as craft breweries and kombucha shops. And to finish your song you set it up perfectly for a saying we like around here "Kentucky you race horses and they run so fast. There's only one thing left to say, Kentucky Kicks Ass!"
I was WAITING for someone to say that!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I live in the western half of Kentucky and yes we are most DEFINITELY a southern state👍
Shelby Foote, in his masterpiece: The Civil War, shows in no uncertain terms that KY is a Southern State, and how its fortunes fared in that terrible conflict.
Gotta love the state of Kentucky especially with the beautiful rollin hills, huge bluffs, and massive mountains. You also gotta love Corvette Museum down there in Bowling Green as well.

We got to live in Lexington, KY for four years and LOVED it! People in general don't understand the international flavor in Lexington. Because the of the University of Kentucky healthcare system, people come from all over the world to train for healthcare. Its a wonderful city, but the traffic is atrocious. The outlying land is beautiful. You are right--the people are so friendly! I miss it!
Thank you for another great video, Nick. Kentucky has an interesting mix of things that make it a great place.
Dude, this was actually really good! I live in Lexington and you were spot on throughout the state. 👍
I try :)
Last time I was in Lexington I discovered the mall has a Sbarros. Was so happy.
Besides where he labels Louisville the ghetto
lemmiwinks43 I’m thinking about moving to Lexington. What are the areas I should stay away from and where should I look into when it comes to living ?
@@josephb9597 I wouldn’t really live north of 6th street until you get past New Circle, Georgetown road inside New Circle, or near Woodhill or Mt. Tabor. That saying, those areas are pretty small compared to where I would/have live!
AVOID Nicholasville road at all costs - it’s not a bad area of town, in fact it’s pretty well off, but the traffic is terrible! Good neighborhoods though (Landsdowne, Zandale). Anywhere near Fayette mall is nice, but the traffic is awful!
If you like suburbs, Hamburg is popular and there are a lot of new houses there. Generally the further south you get, the nicer and newer everything is (near Palomar center, Beaumont center, etc.). The wealthiest area of the city proper (not counting newer suburbs), is near Ashland/Chevy Chase/Lakewood. These neighborhoods are historic areas with the best parks and schools, but can be pricey. Gratz park and west 2nd and 3rd are also high end historic areas - but basically unaffordable unless you’ve owned the place for 50 years.
If you’re younger, living near campus or downtown would be ideal.
Thank you dear for featuring in depth what it's like to a Kentuckian. I'm originally from Kentucky born and raised. I moved to California 6 years ago and I honestly have to say a few things I'd like to say about us kentuckians. You know as someone pretty much raised in Kentucky - around the Lexington area - I really appreciate this video. It strangely enough gave me a fresh appreciation for the place despite it's problems. It's poor in places but it's also quiet and beautiful in others. I sometimes forget how beautiful the mountains look here so it's refreshing to see them again. For that - thank you.
Ok ❤️
I'm from Bardstown, about 45 minutes south of Louisville, everything you said here was spot on
Cool!
I just visited Bardstown a few days ago. LOVED it. It's beautiful.
Im from Kentucky. I've lived there my entire life. I'm from Lexington. A central city with about 400,000 people. I've never known anything besides a suburban/urban lifestyle. I don't have a southern accent either. I've never eaten Burgoo in my life nor did I ever hear about it before this video. KFC is terrible and as a home cook I make my own fried chicken. I love it here, although I don't venture to the hillbilly parts of the state (though I have been there countless times). I love this state for it's beauty and diversity. Nick spoke the truth when he said we are the most ecologically diverse.
kentuckian here, and i can honestly say as a life long UK fan, people care more about college basketball here than any other sport. we need an NBA team haha
I don’t really care about basketball but I will always root for Louisville. I’d rather have college sports over professional though.
@@willyorgy4677 in a way i completely agree, that’s the beauty of the state, 2 teams, but the second something goes down, the whole state comes together
I love my home state. The people are close knit but a bit clannish. I am from eastern KY. It is sad how it’s deteriorated in the past 20 years. They are trying. Pikeville is changing for the better but drugs are killing our young people. Nothing to do Nothing to keep them there.
Wasn't it 2 KY families that were involved in the Hatfield/McCoy feud? Speaking of clannish. Looks like a beautiful state, though. I'm an old VA gent, myself.

Ahh pikeville. Used to drive there and prestonsburg for work. Ashland resident here...
@@nicknack202000 my dad drove to AK Steel (Armco)in Ashland everyday for 30 years from Paintsville KY. An hour commute but not enough work in Paintsville to raise a family ...
@@CarrieLaffs its a decent drive. And wow i havnt heard ak steel referred to as armco in a decade. 👍
So delighted to hear you mention London! That’s my family’s “big city” to their tiny town. Beautiful, diverse place with lots of kind people- many Black sharecroppers made Eastern KY their home in the early 1900 to work in the mines after a boil weavels “plague” destroyed crops in GA and Alabama
I just returned from Kentucky and was blown away by how beautiful it was (and this is in January). So many people I spoke to were born and bred and never left. I started to think maybe this is because there was no reason to leave. It's a gorgeous place.
It is
Where are you from?
@@lillianp-yj6yx the west coast.
My Grandparents were from Kentucky. I used to love going over there for family reunions.
Day drinking Nick?? Juuuust kidding! 😊 It’s five o’clock somewhere!!!! Lol 😊 🍹
I had to for the video...you know ❤️
I spent some time in Kentucky recently and I thought it was absolutely beautiful! The weather is nice and it's sunny there. I loved Paducah and the quilt museum! I am a quilter so those are my peeps anyway. But it did feel a little "patriarchal" to some extent. But aside from that, it was fantastic!
Old white backwards thinking men... (Like Mitch McConnell) is what keeps this state from its full potential.
as opposed to what? a crime infested multicultural nightmare? We can still leave our doors unlocked and you probably cant.

This is so awesome Nick, don't know how you packed so much cool, useful and honest information into 20 minutes but you sure did ... With a sense of humor and heart of an adventurer ! Kentucky born and well travelled here, you hit a lot of nails on the head. Love Daniel Boone National Forest, Red River Gorge area, Bourbon tours, unique places like Shakertown, to name a few. Many friendly, hard working, independent-thinking and appreciative folks in the Commonwealth. Also, a shout out to guys like Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers now carrying on Kentucky's musical legacy.
Dan!! Nice!
There are some of the nicest, most genuine people in Kentucky! I look forward to moving there.
Awesome Nick. Thanks now I know more about a state that I always wondered about. Very educational. Thanks Nick and GET WELL SOON MARYILYN!
Yes David!! She will be better soon!!
Nice shirt
My home state! Thank you for all these videos you publish. I always look forward to them, and I’m glad that you always incorporate a dry sense of humor in them.
I grew up in Louisville, and before moving to Central KY (Georgetown) around middle age, I never witnessed the pink fields in springtime from the blooming of henbit and deadnettle mint. It's absolutely gorgeous. Kentucky is truly a diverse and beautiful state, once you get to know it (and I've lived in several other beautiful states: CT, NC, and CO).
Born and raised in Kentucky, lived here my whole life. I live less than 20 min from Churchill downs but have never had a desire to go to the derby, I actually despise it. Traffic gets really bad, stores get extremely busy, and it always rains that day. 😂 And I've never watched a single basketball game.
Hey Nick ... How are you man ??? ... Today you are talking about Kentucky... And one thing I would like to add that I love fried chicken ... And LONDON, KY always conduct a annual fair of fried chicken where you can visit and eat all day fried chicken .. Nick must visit and enjoy the fair ... And next best place is Bowling Green .. which is definitely a good place in Kentucky ..i am not from Kentucky but I love the place ..and thanks for making this video . Keep doing .. Be safe and healthy and pray for your fan MARILYN ... PEACE ✌️
Marilyn will get better!!
I'm from Harrodsburg Kentucky ( Mercer) the first settlement of this great state, and have to say you done a really great job on the video
Ok AJ
