Native Lexingtonian here! Born and raised. I love my hometown; lots of memories made and my family still lives there. Kind, hospitable folks, beautiful city, delicious food and top notch bourbon. There’s lots of history and always something to do. Excellent town for families. I now live on a farm in rural southwest Ohio 2 hours up the road but my heart is forever in Lexington. My only beef with it though is the explosive amount of development the city has undergone in recent years, which has proportionately contributed to the rising crime rate. Nearly every scrap of green space is getting devoured and it breaks my heart every time I come back for a visit. It used to be homicides were rare in Lexington but are becoming more numerous. Overall, however, it’s a wonderful place to live compared to many other US cities.
My wife and I moved here about a year and a half ago and we absolutely love Lexington. We moved here from Arizona and life has never been better. It is a beautiful city.

Native Lexantonian here. Nice video of out down town, I've never heard of TARR bourbon, you missed the best Pizza "Good fellas" and the crank and boom local ice creamery in the distillery district. The neighborhoods you featured were the ghetto compared if you had driven then other way out-of towns down Richmond Rd and Henry Clay estates and Ashland,/Chevy chase area..come back and go to Keeneland and do the Ky Horse park. Also there is a bourbon passport you can get a stamp in each distillery state wide. My personal favorote is Woodford reserve, then Buffalo Trace and then Makers Mark. Thanks for featuring our town.
I don’t know why this popped up as a suggested video, but I’ve lived here for almost a decade and I love it. It’s beautiful; not too small, not too big. A perfect mix of everything. I’m very proud to live here!
I moved here from California 17 years ago, and I would never move back to California after living in Kentucky. Lexington was the first city that I lived in when we moved here and I was there for 10 years. I've since lived in Richmond and now I'm in Versailles, which about 10 miles from Lexington airport. Lexington has some crime but it's nothing like where I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. People complain about the traffic in Lexington, but most that do have never really driven in real congested traffic. Lexington does have a lot to offer lots of things to do and it's a beautiful city.
I was born and raised in Franklin County just about ten miles outside of Frankfort. This will always be home but I’ve spent alot of time in Woodford Co and it’s the only other place in the entire state that I’d actually want to live. If I ever had to move states I think Wyoming or Montana would be my only choices but for here, Frankfort or Versailles would have to be it.
This is an amazing video! I live in Georgetown which is a neighboring county to Lexington. When I was in middle school I had to do an assignment that involved going all over Lexington and taking pics of all the historical sites! Still one of my favorite things I've ever done! I was born and raised in Lexington. Im currently in Cincinnati but I can't wait to move back. Any time I tell someone I'm from Kentucky, they always think hillbillies and KFC but Lexington really is the perfect mix of urban and rural. Truly a hidden gem city. Also very alive and modern
Lexington is awesome. Few bad areas but great people all over. Clean and pretty and lots to do. Many beautiful parks. Lots of more rural towns just a short drive from lex. Lots of historical homes and buildings. Small home town with a metropolitan feel. Great night life. Family fun every where every day. Just an awesome town. GO BIG BLUE!! come visit we are known for a lot of things basketball, bourbon, fast horses and beautiful country women.
I have lived in Kentucky my entire life I cant say i have anything against Lexington but i personally try to stay away from any city especially Louisville Ky I'm about 2 hrs south of Lexington. I could go live in the country parts but personally dont like the traffic in the cities or the thought of having close neighbors. I have to say I haven't had one bad experience with the people in Lexington everyone i have met have been very friendly and in Kentucky Lexington has the best doctors in the state.

I've lived in Kentucky for 52 years. I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio but both my parents are from Kentucky, so when I was 3 years old, we moved back to Kentucky. I live in Somerset, which is about 76 miles south of Lexington. My heart dr is in Lexington at the Gill heart institute. ❤. UK hospital is part of that. I truly love Kentucky. Those hills surrounds my heart like a welcomed hug !! To those who have moved into Kentucky from other states....Welcome!!!
Comparing the Lexington traffic to Atlanta is simply ridiculous. I grew up in Lexington and recently moved away to a bigger city. It made me realize how relatively mild lexington's traffic actually is.
Definitely true. I am from Lexington and spent 13 1/2 years living about 30 minutes of Atlanta. Lexington's traffic is mild compared to Atlanta's traffic. And I currently live in Lexington again.
I am from Georgetown about 12 miles from Lexington. We lived between Lexington and Georgetown. The only other place I'd live again would be in either Fort Worth,Tyler or Arlington, Texas!! We also have a lot of beautiful horse farms and caves! There's a lot to explore!! Sending lots of love and positive vibes yalls way from KENTUCKY!!
Awesome place for you to have a beer . Lexington has been constantly doing construction to renovate the properties or improve the road ways . It’s such a cool place just over all . The historic district is mind blowing on architectural aspect . I was born in Lexington in 76 grew up in Versailles just outside of the airport , keenland and castle side of Lexington. Great job on the video displaying the city .
Haha I go to Lex once a month to see my Dr and my youngest daughter always has to wave and holler “Hi” to the Princess every time we pass the Castle 😆😆
We've been to Lexington twice and had a great time there (we're from Toronto).... the guided tour of Mary Todd Lincoln's home is one of the most fascinating things we have ever done... the story of her family is amazing, and it is well worth taking the tour
I was born and raised in north cali. Moved to Boston for school. Stayed an extra 2 yrs after school then back to L.A. Moved to Lex about 2015 for a couple years while working in Louisville. I commuted because I didn’t care for Louisville. Definitely prefer Lex of the two. But I ended up moving 85 miles north to Cincinnati. Lex is a nice place but I’m a city guy. I like the feel of a hustle and bustle atmosphere. I like big tall buildings, bridges, a ton of gyms and restaurants, I think Lex is a good place for families looking to slow down and be in a small town vibe but still have access to small city feel as well. What I do know is you do NOT wanna get caught downtown when after a UK basketball game let out. That’s death.
Moved to Lex Vegas in 2009. Left in 2011 to move back to my hometown of Seattle. Sadly haven't been back to Lexington since. I miss it quite a bit. If the conditions are right, I do see myself moving back there, though. It's difficult to explain to people. Kentucky just becomes part of you. It's almost, for lack of a better term, infectious. Just gets into your blood. An underrated, underappreciated, but gorgeous part of the country. Glad you had a good time!
I'm a Kiwi (New Zealander) and actually lived rent free in the care takers cottage of the Old Episcopal Burying ground from 1998 to 2000 whilst renovating the flooring and robe closets, also worked on various horse farms, even did paving stone work on Henry Clay estate. I remember driving out to Bluegrass airport and seeing huge planes flying in with rich Saudis buying up the thoroughbred's. It's a place of extreme wealth.
Our little town of Lexington definitely has much to offer. I can tell you guys were genuinely impressed and enjoyed yourselves greatly….. after all what’s not to love. Thanx for sharing your road trips. Love your takes on the places you visit!
I've lived in the Lexington area for fifty one years and I've seen friends and family come and go. Most people return to this area and stay after testing the waters elsewhere. Downtown Lex is beautiful and I realize now that I take it for granted. The climate is not perfect, mostly due to the gloomy and wet winters and I've noticed that the summers have been wetter than they used to be, but when we do have nice days, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
What I'm noticing is how clean everything is. No graffiti, no homeless encampments all over the sidewalks, or homeless people harrassing people to give them money, no needles on the sidewalk, no trash on the ground or cigarette butts all over the place. I've don't think I've ever seen such a clean city. I've never been to Lexington, but looks like a wonderful town.
I’ve lived here for 55 years. We chase the homeless from downtown every morning. They hang around just outside downtown. Panhandling on every corner. People carry guns everywhere. After midnight I definitely wouldn’t walk around downtown. People like to take their guns into bars then get into shoot outs on the streets.
Visited Lexington a few years ago and stayed with an old friend from school I knew who lived there. It was really enjoyable and I spend a couple days just ambling around the downtown area mostly, checking out random shops, cafes and restaurants. Being from a smaller college town in the mid-south, i was surprised at how large their downtown is compared to the one I'm used to. For a time I kind of wanted to move there. I definitely want to visit again at some point at least.

If you come to Lexington be sure and visit the north side. The city's Northside offers a Walmart shopping center with lots of quality individuals surrounding the area. Lots of cardboard signs, garbage and poor people. And if you're lucky enough to step out of your car in that area you may be fortunate enough to make it in the store without stepping on a needle or a cap from one
Went to UK and loved every second of Lexington. Haven't been back since 2015, miss it much and have a yearning to return. Thanks for showing some highlights of the city.
Lexington is my hometown. The Queen of England has been here many times in the past. Because of her love for horses. She stayed many times at C.V. Whitney's farm out old Paris Pike. In recent years she stayed at Layne's End farms. Lexington has tripled in population since 1975. Diffently growing pains. The biggest concerns of native Lexintonians is the loss of our horse and farm lands to developments and the gang and drug traffic coming in from I -75 from Ohio, Michigan, to Florida. It just a fact. That needs stricter laws enforced. Lexington has always been a very diverse city. I'm most proud of that. I lived a few years down south, and I was never more appreciative of my hometown. Thanks for the visuals and drone footage.
The drug problem wouldn't be nearly as bad if the LPD would actually do something in Little Tijuana. Not to mention, the city as a whole is slowly sinking into Louisville levels of fecal matter. There were 10 people shot last night between the hours of 1am to 6am, mostly women.
Hey Lilly. Everything you said is true. But I hope you rest assured that the farms are not going anywhere. There is tons of room on the north and east to build. Yes the gangs and drugs are bad and have gotten worse but, it's a larger problem. Every big city in this country is a mess right now almost. The homeless are up between 30 and 50% in cities. I was in Louisville all week. It's a sad sight. Homeless and druggies all over. Trash everywhere. Same with cincinnati. Surprisingly Detroit was cleaner than both. In the downtown area. Either way we need to start locking people up again instead of letting them free with no bail.
@@camd4648 Police can only do what the laws allow. The problem is the lawmakers and the judges. Police Officers put their lives in danger every day. Only for the criminals to be turned back out in the streets the next day. This is what you get when you're a blue state.
The Lexington area is configured on a circle design, so although the traffic may be heavy it is reasonably simple to navigate. The circle highway runs around the city with the urban areas inside the circle. The more rural areas lie outside of the circle & are accessed by the 'spokes' running east to west. East of the circle you'll find the Kentucky Horse Park Amid the beautiful breeding & training farms. West of the circle is the infamous Calumet Farm, Keeneland Race Track & sales pavilion & the Lexington airport. Driving either way outside the circle you will soon become overwhelmed by the hundreds of miles of fencing encompassing some of the most highly regarded Thoroughbred (primarily breeding) farms in the world. Having lived there for more than a decade, I can honestly say it is the home of some of the warmest & nicest people you'd ever want to meet. A cosmopolitan city whose population includes residents from all over the world, most of whom are involved, one way or another, in the horse industry. The area is spotless & the choices in cuisine are endless. One of my all time favorite places in the country.
I lived in Lexington for a year and loved it. Had to move for work, but can’t wait to move back. The traffic is worst around the university and during the school year, but elsewhere it’s pretty chill.
I appreciate you showing us the reality of cities that are sadly sinking into oblivion because I think it needs to be seen and documented-but I must say it truly is refreshing and uplifting to see cities that are thriving.
Honey, this city is getting DANGEROUS! There’s almost a murder a day some weeks. The ONLY thing that has improved is the aesthetics. You could get shot anywhere here. That’s the part people need to know about. Our local government needs to get the violence out of Lexington!
Our country is going down the drain. Meanwhile out government spent 5 Trillion dollars + since Covid. And they all got paid Every city, budget, pension, all thier buddies, colleges. All got paid. Meanwhile homeless and drug use through the roof. No jail really anymore. Even for people shooting guns around town. Prices up on everything. And we the people pay for it.

My family has been in central Kentucky for over 200 years. I was born in Lexington, grew up in Jessamine County, just to the south, spent 20 years as a military spouse living all over the world, and when we retired, there was nowhere else we would rather settle down than the Lexington area. It is sad, however, to see that there is not as much affordable housing in the area as there was when we moved back 25 years ago. I fear that my grandchildren may never be able to afford their own home unless they move to one of the surrounding counties.

There’s actually a real life castle in Kentucky too! In Versailles if I’m not mistaken? It wasn’t a castle for a king to live in by the way. A husband actually built it for his wife, I’m not sure about the story but I’ve heard that she died before it was finished and they could move in. It is now a hotel/wedding venue/literally anything you want! I think it’s like 1,000 dollars to stay the night or something along the lines of that! My mom and I pass it every so often as we go to work. I was born & raised in Lexington, Kentucky. I remember when my brother and I were little, our aunt took us downtown in our clothes on a hot summer day, and she told us to play around in every fountain we saw, including the step looking foundation. Which is why it says “Danger, do not climb” back before that was put on the fountain, tons of kids would play in it! 🤣
I live next to the castle... The woman actually left him before the castle was finished. My great great grandpa helped build it, as he did with a lot of important buildings in Lexington.
You will absolutely love Lexington. So much to do and see and so many beautiful hotels to stay in. I personally love The Campbell House since the multi million $ Reno and it’s a short uber downtown😊
Lexington has done a lot of upgrades since the '90s.... just overall. I've been here since 1992, and they've done loads of improvement. Come during a game, or student move-in day if you want to see traffic. There's also " Scarefest" a local paranormal/horror convention. It doesn't take itself too seriously, which makes it fun. It's held around Halloween. The "ceiling clock" is a Foucault's Pendulum...proves the Earth is rotating.
True, Lexington has done a lot to improve the city. One thing I wish they'd do more with is the roads though. New Circle and Man O War are just too small for the amount of people that travel them every single day. It's almost like they didn't think Lexington would keep growing, so they just kept the same old roads, lol. I try to avoid the city during peak rush hour because it's just too much honestly.
I have lived in Kentucky my whole life, 63 years. Never have I heard of anyone putting blackbird in burgoo. A blackbird only weighs about 4 oz. Burgoo was traditionally a community dish cooked in kettles. Members of the community would bring some of their harvest and bounty. The bounty included deer, squirrel, opossum, raccoons and game birds (turkey, grouse, quail, duck, woodcock, dove and crow.) But not blackbirds.
This is from the Winemag website: "Once made from blackbirds, opossum, raccoons, squirrels or anything else you could find (hence its moniker, “roadkill stew”), this thick, spicy stew is as much a local staple as Bourbon or the Kentucky Derby. The town of Lawrenceburg, 25 miles west of Lexington, calls itself the “Burgoo Capital of the World,” and it hosts the Anderson County Burgoo Festival each September." There are numerous other websites that say basically the same thing.
A note of culinary culture in Kentucky, there is much discussion about who makes the best Burgoo throughout the state. A lot of good-natured rivalry even among extended families. Hope you do get a chance to return and do the Bourbon Trail. It will surprise and entertain you.
i'm a native, and i grew up in Winchester which is about 30 mins east of Lexington. its too expensive there now, though, i've done been priced out before i ever got to the point of buying a house, so now i'm a little further east, in a real small town, Irvine. don't forget about the smaller towns, they have a lot of unique stuff and they're just charming. the whole state is full of curiosities, the older i get the more i find to love about KY. its just a fantastic place, my favorite part is just the land. the mountains, the forests, the hills, and all the wildlife, its so peaceful and beautiful. i feel so happy waking up every morning, just sitting and taking in all the sounds, the chickens crowing, wild turkeys off the roost, cows lowing, squirrels caching nuts, literally dozens of different kinds of birds singing. if you like the outdoors and don't have much in proximity to you in your state, you should come to KY! we got woods for days out here, lol. its really quite lovely, i can't say enough good things about this place. its got a hold on me, strong
I've always thought that Lexington is a highly underrated city. Many of my friends that have moved here from elsewhere in the world have stayed, even when they meant to do a short visit. One strong thing in our favor is the amazingly low cost of living here. Plus it's generally safer, although there are some areas to avoid after dark. The beautiful part is the constant regeneration of different areas of the city. One of my favorite areas is Greyline Station, where they repurposed an old bus station as an indoor mall/indie restaurants/everything from barber shops to ice cream. LOL What helps a lot is the presence of two major universities. The thing to know about Lexington are that each neighborhood has its own feel/culture. You really need to explore the different areas to taste the flavor of each.
I visited Greyline Station last month. Never been before. I used to live on that road where Greyline Station is. It was nice although I didn't buy anything there. I have some feelings about any business that comes in and causes the cost of living to go up in that area. That area of town is already low income and many people in that neighborhood on East Loudon Avenue are living below the poverty line. And then Greyline Station comes in and jacks up people's rent to the point where they have to move because they can't afford the rent. Even people whose families had been living in that neighborhood for generations. Just so a bunch of affluent people and tourists can have another place to shop. Gentrification at its worst.
Lexington is my "hometown!" My parents moved from New York to Lexington 67 years ago when IBM opened their manufacturing plant on New Circle Road. I was 5 years young! I have travelled to lots of other states, but Lexington is and always be the most beautiful! I'm so glad you saw and enjoyed the beauty and the allure of our city! Ya'll come back now, ya hear?!
A nugget you missed is that Main St. Baptist church next to Mary Todd’s house has Lincoln’s signature on the deed to the land from when he gifted his wife’s former slaves the land to build the church.
Lexington is a beautiful city. You should go through the neighborhoods of the horse farms here and in neighboring towns. You'd be hard pressed to find a more beautiful drive through farm country. The roads are lined with old trees, rock fences and, of course, massive homes and barns with rolling fields full of horses.
i’ve lived here since i was 4 years old. it’s funny because i was just having a conversation with my friend about just how much horses are a part of the culture here. so much so that you see paintings of them in restaurants. and i’m at the point where i can’t comprehend how weird that might be for an outsider 😂😂 also when i was in second grade my elementary school painted one of those horse statues you see all over town. i went to the first ever American-held equestrian games.. it’s not perfect bc no city is, but it’s definitely unique and homey if you find your people, and i’m sure you will
I grew up in a little town on the outskirts of Lexington called Nicholasville. I'm so glad you enjoyed Lexington, it really is a beautiful city full of wonderful things. Kentucky in general is a wonderful and beautiful place with a rich history full of drama and intrigue. If you like nature and spending time Outdoors Kentucky is probably one of the best places in the country to do so
Born and raised in Lexington ..Local artist designed them and painted scenes pertaining to the Bluegrass area.. each one was auctioned off to local business..fund raiser. Maybe 20 years ago now.
Love your videos. The distillery district you visited on Manchester Street gets its name from an old, defunct distillery called The James E. Pepper Distillery, which closed in 1958. The distillery building and the rickhouse remained standing but abandoned for decades. Recently the James Pepper brand was revived, but apparently it is a micro-distillery operation at this point. Much of the site of the James E. Pepper distillery and rickhouse were developed into the dining and entertainment complex you visited. On weekends especially the place is really hopping. Every time I have been, I had to park in the far parking lot on the other side of the rickhouse because the primary parking lot was totally full. If your travels ever bring you back to Lexington, a nice place to get a drink during the warmer months is the Kentucky Native Cafe, which has outdoor seating in a park-like atmosphere with shade from mature trees. Another good spot is The Beer Trappe, on Euclid Avenue. There is a grand old movie theater on Main Street called The Kentucky Theater which is worth going out of your way to visit. And if you should ever drive from Lexington to Frankfort, I recommend the scenic route along Old Frankfort Pike, which coincidentally is what Manchester Street becomes as you head west out of town.
Yep. James E. Pepper is one of my ancestors. One of his ancestors Joseph Smith Pepper was my biological maternal 5th great grandfather. He was slaveowner from Mason County, Kentucky. I have been to the distillery district a few times. I don't drink. So it doesn't interest me much. But Goodfellas pizza is there and it's great.
Keeneland vs Churchill Downs? Keeneland all day everyday. Lexington honestly is as big as you need as bigger cities go. Great food and a great college town. Very clean too.

Native Kentuckian here. I moved to Lexington in 2007 to go to college and never left. It's definitely a college city but also great for families, etc. I went to the University of KY and still live close to campus. I love it here!
This is where I was born and raised and moved back too. It’s a beautiful medium sized city. Lots to see and go here. Oh and Queen has been here a lot! Many times under the radar. I know of farms she’s stayed at. My family member through marriage is a huge horse owner. He’s gone yo meet her too. But yes traffic is horrible because we have no infrastructure and a lot of fast growth.
I lived in Lexington during my Master's and Doctoral studies at UK. Great town and great school. Go BBN. Now live in Newport RI, great place on the Atlantic.

I have no idea why this is randomly in my recommended. I've lived in Lexington about 16-17 years and it really is beautiful. Very peaceful around here. I'm currently going to UK and yes driving through that area is awful cause college kids are EVERYWHERE!! Our housing market is pretty shit and I'm not surprised the poverty numbers are so high. The horses you see around town are painted by all the high schools around and in the Downtown Public Library there are (or were, I haven't been in many years) painted foals done by the elementary schools.
I'm from Lexington and thank you for showing our city in a beautiful light. You definitely need to come back to Kentucky and do the Bourbon Trail. It's worth it. The Distillery District is a very cool area. Great music and The Break Room is my favorite. Goodfellows is my favorite pizza place in Lexington.
@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip If you go back to the Distillery District, I highly recommend going to Crank & Boom ice cream, it is right next door to the Elkhorn Tavern and is some of the best ice cream in Kentucky. There's also a retro arcade and bar across the street that's a favorite haunt for me and my best friend.
Also, Jim Varney, of Ernest fame, is buried in the Lexington cemetery (most beautiful in the country btw) and a man who was technically the president of the United States for just 1 day (D Rice Atchison I think)

Born and raised in Lexington. Became too much of a city and less of a town so we moved to nicholasville (right outside of Lexington) a couple years ago and love it.
I lived in Lexington for four years after living in Cincinnati for four years also. I liked Lexington more than I had Louisville as the people are more nicer and approachable in my humble opinion. I had even found some really excellent Mexican and Chinese restaurants in the metro area.
I was born and raised part of my life in Lexington I don't know what road you came in on but by the airport there is a real castle. You can eat and stay there. At night is when you need to be careful it gets kinda bad with all the bars and the students going to the bars. I miss Lexington I have lived in metropolis Illinois since 93. My husband is from Winchester KY. I lived by the stadium there and my dad used to park cars on our lawn it was five dollars a car but that was in the seventies I was about five or six I think I was born in 67. I haven't been down town in ten yrs.
Considering moving here from Houston. This one of the rare cities where the locals are not talking trash about outsiders moving to their city. That is super cool.
True. Outsiders moving in and the city always under construction is one of the reasons I love Lexington. We are very welcoming. Though be wary of Lexington drivers. They give New Yorkers a run for their money
Just came across your videos. I have been really enjoying them. I am from Lexington and I 100% agree with you. It is beautiful ,well most of Kentucky is ,but the traffic in Lexington is horrible and one of the many reasons I no longer live there. Lexington is busy, noisy and crowded. There is lots to do and see but it is just too much for me ,even though I grew up there. I much prefer a rural area outside of a quaint small town. Not only is the cost of living much more affordable but it is quieter and more peaceful. One of the reasons Lexington is always hopping is because it is surrounded by smaller towns where people are commuting daily to Lexington for work. If y'all ever get back this way and are looking for things to do, check out the Arboretum In Lexington in the Summer or the Fall. it is absolutely gorgeous. The Lexington Cemetery is a beautiful place to walk around. as well . If you like horses then the Kentucky Horse Park is a must see. Plan for the whole day . Try a KY Hot brown, some bourbon balls ,beer cheese and a mint julep but not all together lol.. but KY is known for these delightful treats.
Native Lexingtonian here! Born and raised. I love my hometown; lots of memories made and my family still lives there. Kind, hospitable folks, beautiful city, delicious food and top notch bourbon. There’s lots of history and always something to do. Excellent town for families. I now live on a farm in rural southwest Ohio 2 hours up the road but my heart is forever in Lexington. My only beef with it though is the explosive amount of development the city has undergone in recent years, which has proportionately contributed to the rising crime rate. Nearly every scrap of green space is getting devoured and it breaks my heart every time I come back for a visit. It used to be homicides were rare in Lexington but are becoming more numerous. Overall, however, it’s a wonderful place to live compared to many other US cities.
Attending university of Kentucky both football and basketball games are so much fun!!
My wife and I moved here about a year and a half ago and we absolutely love Lexington. We moved here from Arizona and life has never been better. It is a beautiful city.

Native Lexantonian here. Nice video of out down town, I've never heard of TARR bourbon, you missed the best Pizza "Good fellas" and the crank and boom local ice creamery in the distillery district. The neighborhoods you featured were the ghetto compared if you had driven then other way out-of towns down Richmond Rd and Henry Clay estates and Ashland,/Chevy chase area..come back and go to Keeneland and do the Ky Horse park. Also there is a bourbon passport you can get a stamp in each distillery state wide. My personal favorote is Woodford reserve, then Buffalo Trace and then Makers Mark. Thanks for featuring our town.

I moved here from California 17 years ago, and I would never move back to California after living in Kentucky. Lexington was the first city that I lived in when we moved here and I was there for 10 years. I've since lived in Richmond and now I'm in Versailles, which about 10 miles from Lexington airport. Lexington has some crime but it's nothing like where I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. People complain about the traffic in Lexington, but most that do have never really driven in real congested traffic. Lexington does have a lot to offer lots of things to do and it's a beautiful city.
I was born and raised in Franklin County just about ten miles outside of Frankfort. This will always be home but I’ve spent alot of time in Woodford Co and it’s the only other place in the entire state that I’d actually want to live. If I ever had to move states I think Wyoming or Montana would be my only choices but for here, Frankfort or Versailles would have to be it.

When I was in middle school I had to do an assignment that involved going all over Lexington and taking pics of all the historical sites! Still one of my favorite things I've ever done! I was born and raised in Lexington. Im currently in Cincinnati but I can't wait to move back. Any time I tell someone I'm from Kentucky, they always think hillbillies and KFC but Lexington really is the perfect mix of urban and rural. Truly a hidden gem city. Also very alive and modern
Lexington is awesome. Few bad areas but great people all over. Clean and pretty and lots to do. Many beautiful parks. Lots of more rural towns just a short drive from lex. Lots of historical homes and buildings. Small home town with a metropolitan feel. Great night life. Family fun every where every day. Just an awesome town. I have lived in Kentucky my entire life I cant say i have anything against Lexington but i personally try to stay away from any city especially Louisville Ky I'm about 2 hrs south of Lexington. I could go live in the country parts but personally dont like the traffic in the cities or the thought of having close neighbors. I have to say I haven't had one bad experience with the people in Lexington everyone i have met have been very friendly and in Kentucky Lexington has the best doctors in the state.

I've lived in Kentucky for 52 years. I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio but both my parents are from Kentucky, so when I was 3 years old, we moved back to Kentucky. I live in Somerset, which is about 76 miles south of Lexington. My heart dr is in Lexington at the Gill heart institute. ❤. UK hospital is part of that. I truly love Kentucky. Those hills surrounds my heart like a welcomed hug !! To those who have moved into Kentucky from other states....Welcome!!!

Comparing the Lexington traffic to Atlanta is simply ridiculous. I grew up in Lexington and recently moved away to a bigger city. It made me realize how relatively mild lexington's traffic actually is.
Definitely true. I am from Lexington and spent 13 1/2 years living about 30 minutes of Atlanta. Lexington's traffic is mild compared to Atlanta's traffic. And I currently live in Lexington again.

I am from Georgetown about 12 miles from Lexington. We lived between Lexington and Georgetown. The only other place I'd live again would be in either Fort Worth,Tyler or Arlington, Texas!! We've been to Lexington twice and had a great time there (we're from Toronto).... the guided tour of Mary Todd Lincoln's home is one of the most fascinating things we have ever done... the story of her family is amazing, and it is well worth taking the tour

I was born and raised in north cali. Moved to Boston for school. Stayed an extra 2 yrs after school then back to L.A. Moved to Lex about 2015 for a couple years while working in Louisville. I commuted because I didn’t care for Louisville. Definitely prefer Lex of the two. But I ended up moving 85 miles north to Cincinnati. Lex is a nice place but I’m a city guy. I like the feel of a hustle and bustle atmosphere. I like big tall buildings, bridges, a ton of gyms and restaurants, I think Lex is a good place for families looking to slow down and be in a small town vibe but still have access to small city feel as well. What I do know is you do NOT wanna get caught downtown when after a UK basketball game let out. That’s death.

Moved to Lex Vegas in 2009. Left in 2011 to move back to my hometown of Seattle. Sadly haven't been back to Lexington since. I miss it quite a bit. If the conditions are right, I do see myself moving back there, though. It's difficult to explain to people. Kentucky just becomes part of you. It's almost, for lack of a better term, infectious. Just gets into your blood. An underrated, underappreciated, but gorgeous part of the country. Glad you had a good time!

I'm a Kiwi (New Zealander) and actually lived rent free in the care takers cottage of the Old Episcopal Burying ground from 1998 to 2000 whilst renovating the flooring and robe closets, also worked on various horse farms, even did paving stone work on Henry Clay estate. I remember driving out to Bluegrass airport and seeing huge planes flying in with rich Saudis buying up the thoroughbred's. It's a place of extreme wealth.

I've lived in the Lexington area for fifty one years and I've seen friends and family come and go. Most people return to this area and stay after testing the waters elsewhere. Downtown Lex is beautiful and I realize now that I take it for granted. The climate is not perfect, mostly due to the gloomy and wet winters and I've noticed that the summers have been wetter than they used to be, but when we do have nice days, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

I was born a raised hear in Kentucky. Kentucky is beautiful. I love keenland, the horse farms are beautiful.
What I'm noticing is how clean everything is. No graffiti, no homeless encampments all over the sidewalks, or homeless people harrassing people to give them money, no needles on the sidewalk, no trash on the ground or cigarette butts all over the place. I've don't think I've ever seen such a clean city. I've never been to Lexington, but looks like a wonderful town.
I’ve lived here for 55 years. We chase the homeless from downtown every morning. They hang around just outside downtown. Panhandling on every corner. People carry guns everywhere. After midnight I definitely wouldn’t walk around downtown. People like to take their guns into bars then get into shoot outs on the streets.
I can’t wait to move to Lexington next month. It’s one of the nicest cities I’ve ever seen.
Visited Lexington a few years ago and stayed with an old friend from school I knew who lived there. It was really enjoyable and I spend a couple days just ambling around the downtown area mostly, checking out random shops, cafes and restaurants. Being from a smaller college town in the mid-south, i was surprised at how large their downtown is compared to the one I'm used to. For a time I kind of wanted to move there. I definitely want to visit again at some point at least.

If you come to Lexington be sure and visit the north side. The city's Northside offers a Walmart shopping center with lots of quality individuals surrounding the area. Lots of cardboard signs, garbage and poor people. And if you're lucky enough to step out of your car in that area you may be fortunate enough to make it in the store without stepping on a needle or a cap from one
Lexington is a fairly progressive town, but as this commenter proves, there's still pockets of racism.
Went to UK and loved every second of Lexington. Haven't been back since 2015, miss it much and have a yearning to return. Thanks for showing some highlights of the city.
Lexington is my hometown.
The Queen of England has been here many times in the past. Because of her love for horses. She stayed many times at C.V. Whitney's farm out old Paris Pike. In recent years she stayed at Layne's End farms.
Lexington has tripled in population since 1975. Diffently growing pains.
The biggest concerns of native Lexintonians is the loss of our horse and farm lands to developments and the gang and drug traffic coming in from I -75 from Ohio, Michigan, to Florida. It just a fact. That needs stricter laws enforced.
Lexington has always been a very diverse city. I'm most proud of that.

The drug problem wouldn't be nearly as bad if the LPD would actually do something in Little Tijuana. Not to mention, the city as a whole is slowly sinking into Louisville levels of fecal matter. There were 10 people shot last night between the hours of 1am to 6am, mostly women.
Hey Lilly. Everything you said is true. But I hope you rest assured that the farms are not going anywhere. There is tons of room on the north and east to build. Yes the gangs and drugs are bad and have gotten worse but, it's a larger problem. Every big city in this country is a mess right now almost. The homeless are up between 30 and 50% in cities. I was in Louisville all week. It's a sad sight. Homeless and druggies all over. Trash everywhere. Same with cincinnati. Surprisingly Detroit was cleaner than both. In the downtown area. Either way we need to start locking people up again instead of letting them free with no bail.

Police can only do what the laws allow.
The problem is the lawmakers and the judges. Police Officers put their lives in danger every day. Only for the criminals to be turned back out in the streets the next day. This is what you get when you're a blue state.
Lexington native here. Our infrastructure was built for a city with half the population we have. Traffic is some of the worst in the country.
The Lexington area is configured on a circle design, so although the traffic may be heavy it is reasonably simple to navigate.
The circle highway runs around the city with the urban areas inside the circle. The more rural areas lie outside of the circle & are accessed by the 'spokes' running east to west. East of the circle you'll find the Kentucky Horse Park Amid the beautiful breeding & training farms. West of the circle is the infamous Calumet Farm, Keeneland Race Track & sales pavilion & the Lexington airport. Driving either way outside the circle you will soon become overwhelmed by the hundreds of miles of fencing encompassing some of the most highly regarded Thoroughbred (primarily breeding) farms in the world.
Having lived there for more than a decade, I can honestly say it is the home of some of the warmest & nicest people you'd ever want to meet. A cosmopolitan city whose population includes residents from all over the world, most of whom are involved, one way or another, in the horse industry. The area is spotless & the choices in cuisine are endless.
One of my all time favorite places in the country.
I lived in Lexington for a year and loved it. Had to move for work, but can’t wait to move back. The traffic is worst around the university and during the school year, but elsewhere it’s pretty chill.
Once you live here you know rush hour time and what sts not to take.
I appreciate you showing us the reality of cities that are sadly sinking into oblivion because I think it needs to be seen and documented-but I must say it truly is refreshing and uplifting to see cities that are thriving.

Honey, this city is getting DANGEROUS! There’s almost a murder a day some weeks. The ONLY thing that has improved is the aesthetics. You could get shot anywhere here. That’s the part people need to know about. Our local government needs to get the violence out of Lexington!

My family has been in central Kentucky for over 200 years. I was born in Lexington, grew up in Jessamine County, just to the south, spent 20 years as a military spouse living all over the world, and when we retired, there was nowhere else we would rather settle down than the Lexington area. It is sad, however, to see that there is not as much affordable housing in the area as there was when we moved back 25 years ago. I fear that my grandchildren may never be able to afford their own home unless they move to one of the surrounding counties.

There’s actually a real life castle in Kentucky too! In Versailles if I’m not mistaken? It wasn’t a castle for a king to live in by the way. A husband actually built it for his wife, I’m not sure about the story but I’ve heard that she died before it was finished and they could move in. It is now a hotel/wedding venue/literally anything you want! I think it’s like 1,000 dollars to stay the night or something along the lines of that! My mom and I pass it every so often as we go to work. I was born & raised in Lexington, Kentucky.
I remember when my brother and I were little, our aunt took us downtown in our clothes on a hot summer day, and she told us to play around in every fountain we saw, including the step looking foundation. Which is why it says “Danger, do not climb” back before that was put on the fountain, tons of kids would play in it! 🤣

Lexington has done a lot of upgrades since the '90s.... just overall. I've been here since 1992, and they've done loads of improvement.
Come during a game, or student move-in day if you want to see traffic.
There's also " Scarefest" a local paranormal/horror convention. It doesn't take itself too seriously, which makes it fun.
It's held around Halloween.

True, Lexington has done a lot to improve the city. One thing I wish they'd do more with is the roads though. New Circle and Man O War are just too small for the amount of people that travel them every single day. It's almost like they didn't think Lexington would keep growing, so they just kept the same old roads, lol. I try to avoid the city during peak rush hour because it's just too much honestly.

I have lived in Kentucky my whole life, 63 years. Never have I heard of anyone putting blackbird in burgoo. A blackbird only weighs about 4 oz. Burgoo was traditionally a community dish cooked in kettles. Members of the community would bring some of their harvest and bounty. The bounty included deer, squirrel, opossum, raccoons and game birds (turkey, grouse, quail, duck, woodcock, dove and crow.) But not blackbirds.

"Once made from blackbirds, opossum, raccoons, squirrels or anything else you could find (hence its moniker, “roadkill stew”), this thick, spicy stew is as much a local staple as Bourbon or the Kentucky Derby. The town of Lawrenceburg, 25 miles west of Lexington, calls itself the “Burgoo Capital of the World,” and it hosts the Anderson County Burgoo Festival each September."

A note of culinary culture in Kentucky, there is much discussion about who makes the best Burgoo throughout the state. A lot of good-natured rivalry even among extended families. Hope you do get a chance to return and do the Bourbon Trail. It will surprise and entertain you.
i'm a native, and i grew up in Winchester which is about 30 mins east of Lexington. its too expensive there now, though, i've done been priced out before i ever got to the point of buying a house, so now i'm a little further east, in a real small town, Irvine. don't forget about the smaller towns, they have a lot of unique stuff and they're just charming. the whole state is full of curiosities, the older i get the more i find to love about KY. its just a fantastic place, my favorite part is just the land. the mountains, the forests, the hills, and all the wildlife, its so peaceful and beautiful. i feel so happy waking up every morning, just sitting and taking in all the sounds, the chickens crowing, wild turkeys off the roost, cows lowing, squirrels caching nuts, literally dozens of different kinds of birds singing. if you like the outdoors and don't have much in proximity to you in your state, you should come to KY! we got woods for days out here, lol. its really quite lovely, i can't say enough good things about this place. its got a hold on me, strong

I've always thought that Lexington is a highly underrated city. Many of my friends that have moved here from elsewhere in the world have stayed, even when they meant to do a short visit. One strong thing in our favor is the amazingly low cost of living here. Plus it's generally safer, although there are some areas to avoid after dark. The beautiful part is the constant regeneration of different areas of the city. One of my favorite areas is Greyline Station, where they repurposed an old bus station as an indoor mall/indie restaurants/everything from barber shops to ice cream. LOL What helps a lot is the presence of two major universities. The thing to know about Lexington are that each neighborhood has its own feel/culture. You really need to explore the different areas to taste the flavor of each.

I visited Greyline Station last month. Never been before. I used to live on that road where Greyline Station is. It was nice although I didn't buy anything there. I have some feelings about any business that comes in and causes the cost of living to go up in that area. That area of town is already low income and many people in that neighborhood on East Loudon Avenue are living below the poverty line. And then Greyline Station comes in and jacks up people's rent to the point where they have to move because they can't afford the rent. Even people whose families had been living in that neighborhood for generations. Just so a bunch of affluent people and tourists can have another place to shop. Gentrification at its worst.

Lexington is my "hometown!" My parents moved from New York to Lexington 67 years ago when IBM opened their manufacturing plant on New Circle Road. I was 5 years young! I have travelled to lots of other states, but Lexington is and always be the most beautiful! I'm so glad you saw and enjoyed the beauty and the allure of our city! Ya'll come back now, ya hear?!

Lexington is a beautiful city. You should go through the neighborhoods of the horse farms here and in neighboring towns. You'd be hard pressed to find a more beautiful drive through farm country. The roads are lined with old trees, rock fences and, of course, massive homes and barns with rolling fields full of horses.

i’ve lived here since i was 4 years old. it’s funny because i was just having a conversation with my friend about just how much horses are a part of the culture here. so much so that you see paintings of them in restaurants. and i’m at the point where i can’t comprehend how weird that might be for an outsider 😂😂 also when i was in second grade my elementary school painted one of those horse statues you see all over town. i went to the first ever American-held equestrian games.. it’s not perfect bc no city is, but it’s definitely unique and homey if you find your people, and i’m sure you will

I grew up in a little town on the outskirts of Lexington called Nicholasville. I'm so glad you enjoyed Lexington, it really is a beautiful city full of wonderful things. Kentucky in general is a wonderful and beautiful place with a rich history full of drama and intrigue. If you like nature and spending time Outdoors Kentucky is probably one of the best places in the country to do so

Born and raised in Lexington ..Local artist designed them and painted scenes pertaining to the Bluegrass area.. each one was auctioned off to local business..fund raiser. Maybe 20 years ago now.

Love your videos. The distillery district you visited on Manchester Street gets its name from an old, defunct distillery called The James E. Pepper Distillery, which closed in 1958. The distillery building and the rickhouse remained standing but abandoned for decades. Recently the James Pepper brand was revived, but apparently it is a micro-distillery operation at this point. Much of the site of the James E. Pepper distillery and rickhouse were developed into the dining and entertainment complex you visited. On weekends especially the place is really hopping. Every time I have been, I had to park in the far parking lot on the other side of the rickhouse because the primary parking lot was totally full.
If your travels ever bring you back to Lexington, a nice place to get a drink during the warmer months is the Kentucky Native Cafe, which has outdoor seating in a park-like atmosphere with shade from mature trees. Another good spot is The Beer Trappe, on Euclid Avenue. There is a grand old movie theater on Main Street called The Kentucky Theater which is worth going out of your way to visit. And if you should ever drive from Lexington to Frankfort, I recommend the scenic route along Old Frankfort Pike, which coincidentally is what Manchester Street becomes as you head west out of town.

Yep. James E. Pepper is one of my ancestors. One of his ancestors Joseph Smith Pepper was my biological maternal 5th great grandfather. He was slaveowner from Mason County, Kentucky. I have been to the distillery district a few times. I don't drink. So it doesn't interest me much. But Goodfellas pizza is there and it's great.
My mothers side of the family came out of Danville, Kentucky. About 45 minutes southwest of Lexington.

Keeneland vs Churchill Downs? Keeneland all day everyday. Lexington honestly is as big as you need as bigger cities go. Great food and a great college town. Very clean too.

Native Kentuckian here. I moved to Lexington in 2007 to go to college and never left. It's definitely a college city but also great for families, etc. I went to the University of KY and still live close to campus. I love it here!
This is where I was born and raised and moved back too. It’s a beautiful medium sized city. Lots to see and go here. Oh and Queen has been here a lot! Many times under the radar. I know of farms she’s stayed at. My family member through marriage is a huge horse owner. He’s gone yo meet her too. But yes traffic is horrible because we have no infrastructure and a lot of fast growth.

I have no idea why this is randomly in my recommended. I've lived in Lexington about 16-17 years and it really is beautiful. Very peaceful around here. I'm currently going to UK and yes driving through that area is awful cause college kids are EVERYWHERE!! Our housing market is pretty shit and I'm not surprised the poverty numbers are so high. The horses you see around town are painted by all the high schools around and in the Downtown Public Library there are (or were, I haven't been in many years) painted foals done by the elementary schools.
Traffic is a damn mess, the infrastructure is designed for 100 k population not nearly 350 k.
I'm from Lexington and thank you for showing our city in a beautiful light. You definitely need to come back to Kentucky and do the Bourbon Trail. It's worth it. The Distillery District is a very cool area. Great music and The Break Room is my favorite. Goodfellows is my favorite pizza place in Lexington.

@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip If you go back to the Distillery District, I highly recommend going to Crank & Boom ice cream, it is right next door to the Elkhorn Tavern and is some of the best ice cream in Kentucky. There's also a retro arcade and bar across the street that's a favorite haunt for me and my best friend.
Lexington is also a very clean city
Also, Jim Varney, of Ernest fame, is buried in the Lexington cemetery (most beautiful in the country btw) and a man who was technically the president of the United States for just 1 day (D Rice Atchison I think)

Even though they were tasters, those 120+ proof bourbons were getting us buzzed big time. That's why we had to eat something. :)

Born and raised in Lexington. Became too much of a city and less of a town so we moved to nicholasville (right outside of Lexington) a couple years ago and love it.

When I hear the city of Lexington I always remember TV show "Justified" :) .
I lived in Lexington for four years after living in Cincinnati for four years also. I liked Lexington more than I had Louisville as the people are more nicer and approachable in my humble opinion. I had even found some really excellent Mexican and Chinese restaurants in the metro area.

You really should try and check out the woodford reserve distillery if you have the time .
We will. Next spring we are going to drive the Bourbon Trail and visit most of the distilleries.

Love Kentucky, Lexington is gorgeous. The horse park is my favorite place, spent a lot of time there over the years.
I was born and raised part of my life in Lexington I don't know what road you came in on but by the airport there is a real castle. You can eat and stay there. At night is when you need to be careful it gets kinda bad with all the bars and the students going to the bars. I miss Lexington I have lived in metropolis Illinois since 93. My husband is from Winchester KY. I lived by the stadium there and my dad used to park cars on our lawn it was five dollars a car but that was in the seventies I was about five or six I think I was born in 67. I haven't been down town in ten yrs.
I'm having to move away but I'll miss it greatly. Love all the bars and restaurants

True. Outsiders moving in and the city always under construction is one of the reasons I love Lexington. We are very welcoming. Though be wary of Lexington drivers. They give New Yorkers a run for their money

Just came across your videos. I have been really enjoying them. I am from Lexington and I 100% agree with you. It is beautiful ,well most of Kentucky is ,but the traffic in Lexington is horrible and one of the many reasons I no longer live there. Lexington is busy, noisy and crowded. There is lots to do and see but it is just too much for me ,even though I grew up there. I much prefer a rural area outside of a quaint small town. Not only is the cost of living much more affordable but it is quieter and more peaceful. One of the reasons Lexington is always hopping is because it is surrounded by smaller towns where people are commuting daily to Lexington for work. If y'all ever get back this way and are looking for things to do, check out the Arboretum In Lexington in the Summer or the Fall. it is absolutely gorgeous. The Lexington Cemetery is a beautiful place to walk around. as well . If you like horses then the Kentucky Horse Park is a must see. Plan for the whole day . Try a KY Hot brown, some bourbon balls ,beer cheese and a mint julep but not all together lol.. but KY is known for these delightful treats.
