The " Sky Cheif " painted on the wall was classic, haven't seen one that well preserved in a while. How nice it probably was in that town when it was painted, probably a vibrant small town. All those abandoned buildings bustling with businesses, sad to see that part of America gone. You can't just ride by an old theater and not check it out. You just can't. Joe. Dude. Bro. I remember when I could see across the street and read a small sign in a door. Our children sure make us appreciate what is was like to be young. cities tend to have a bland accent. there are so many different accents they blend and cancel each orher out. i grew up in ND. people in towns with at best 2 accents, it's much stronger. francis mcdormand nailed the accent i grew up with.

6:33 same situation in South Bend, Indiana where I go to school (Notre Dame). The top employer is medical, shortly followed by Notre Dame. South Bend has a history of manufacturing like other rust belt cities, and the decline began as early as 1963 when Studebaker exited the auto industry and closed their plant in South Bend. These cities have all been through so much, and it's been great to witness part of the slow growth. Hopefully more industries can bolster the local economy in years to come and improve South Bend for the roughly 100k here today.

I didn't realize towns in Kansas were so pretty. My father was born on a farm near Zurich Kansas. He and my aunts and uncles talked about the weather and living thru the dust bowl on a farm, long walks to the one room school house through deep snow. Sometimes the boys carried their youngest sister through the deep snow. They ended up selling the farm and moving to Chicago. Mound City looks like a nice place to live!

I was raised in the farming railroad town of Willmar, Minnesota. The railroad would set up water stops for the steam engines. Since the train was stopped, they would set up depots for loading and offloading freight. Therefore they established towns in those locations and named them.

It's the width of the roads in these small towns that astonishes me, enough for four lane highways but no traffic! Main street Hillsboro is wider than the main drag of my city of 200,000 people.

Great tour of Kansas! Guess there wasn't any good places to stop for dinner. Hawaii should be interesting, but Hilo beats Oahu as far as getting a small town feel, and Pahoa is really small and remote, but all of that is on The Big Island, which is totally different from Oahu and part of a chain of islands, which are all unique features of the 50th state. Alaska should be quite the adventure as well!

I attended Cook Elementary in 1970. Thank you for sharing that. I worked on houses in that neighborhood through out my teen years. I witnessed Flints decline of the 70’s and 80’s. I left a few months after I turned 18. No regrets just memories
