We’ll go over those tidbits, plus a whole lot more! So all yall grab a daiquiri and some crawdaddies, we’re going to unbox the state of Louisiana.
Aww. What’s going on here? Looks like they’re setting up crawfish traps. Yum. That means it must be spring time! Everyone in Louisiana loves springtime. The weather isn’t too muggy, there’s no hurricanes coming yet, and of course, it’s crawfish season.
They love their crawfish here. Just like they love nature and their culture.
But Louisiana is much more than swampy crawfish stew. It’s actually a REALLY super diverse state, with lots of tough folks and there’s some real issues, too. It’s kind of like a foreign country within the United States. In order to really get to know the state of Louisiana, we have to look at the whole state and explore each and every area.
This is Louisiana. Now as you can see there’s a lot of different regions in this state. In fact, this might be the most diverse state when it comes to region by region differences. First off, they don’t use counties here. They’re called parishes. And just about each parish has its own distinct culture, and way of life and even accent. If you moved here, you’d likely be a little overwhelmed with the differences from region to region.
We’re gonna begin up here in Northern Louisiana.

I cook Gumbo all of the time for nostalgia. I made it at work and one man didn't like okra. He said "it would have been good if you didn't put okra in it "...Sir: OKRA is the main ingredient, and yes I put tomatoes in my Gumbo too btw.
My mother-in-law didn't like it period, especially the crayfish.
I hated Northern Louisiana because it is in fact an extension of Arkansas which is a weird state to live in. Living in AR is what pushed me up North.
If I move back to LA, we're moving to Mandeville!

As a citizen of Louisiana this is garbage.
I moved from my 35 year residence in San Francisco to Baton Rouge in 2020. I love it here. In fact, I severed my CA ties in December to sink myself into this new home. Feels like this place deserves loving attention that I can provide, and offers far more human benefits than CA has ever thought of. Here, we live in nature. There, they try to conquer, control and especially own it. That's why the stats don't tell the story - if you're measuring money and status, you're in CA. If you're measuring happiness and peace, you're in Louisiana.
I agree with you ..I grew up in sulphur Louisiana right next to lake Charles until I was about 16 years old and moved to northern California where the redwoods and coast line are the most beautiful places in California as far as I'm concerned...but I was raised in the country I'm small towns in Louisiana and I love the culture and food ...miss hunting and fishing there too ..my family was closer there than here ..more religious ...I love both states ..but if you want peace and happiness Louisiana is where it's at ...I'm looking to move to Montana or Wyoming next and see how it is there .... anyhow ..eat some crawfish for me when the season is open and enjoy

California is home for me; my Daughter moved there met and married a man from there, she endures living there despite she’s a California Girl. I enjoy visiting my home State always , the Hospitality, Fantastic food that’s the extent of it.
In CA. only the mountains and ocean are wilderness but even most of those are private land now... Anything else is terraformed asphalt suburbia, or gigantic corporate farms. Too many f ing ppl.
As a lake Charles Cajun, this was the first “review” of the culture and community that actually looked at the living culture and not just the party culture. Thank you.

Exploitation. Look at DR Congo! Many naturally resourceful lands are controlled by very greedy people, usually outsiders.
Louisiana is our home but it was home to natives before and still. They are the true caretakers of the land. Many of the Europeans who emigrated or were exiled here farmed mono crops in the beginning and eventually turned our coastline and inland prairies into a massive oil well to be continuously drilled from. Don't forget nuclear and natural gas, as well as chemical plants galore. You'd think the people here could have learned from the other humans who were here how to take care of an ecosystem that was here before us, but that was never their goal.

Creole also includes those with some Spanish ancestry. In fact the word "Creole" is derived from a Spanish word "Criollio" (That is, if I'm spelling that latter word correctly) My maternal forebears lived in Louisiana for nearly two hundred years, relocating to other parts of the country in the 1940s.
@@davidblaskie8987 , that is correct. There are people with Creole backgrounds with French and Spanish last names. I can trace my family history from the 1800s. My maternal grandparents have families that have owned land since the 1880s. This land is now owned by my mother and her siblings.

But seriously, as a child, I knew I wouldn't stay in Louisiana. The main highlight is poverty and all that comes with it. Yes, the State is rich, but the citizens are poor. I love my home state but refuse to live there. I visit when I miss family and the food. 😍😘💖

I'm from New Orleans but living out of state now. I love my home state and missed it so much, especially the food! Yes, we have lots of issues in the state but our culture and food is unmatched. We have the best food in the entire country and one of the best in the world!
No state can come close to our Cajun, Creole, and Southern style cooking. For a small state, our way of life, culture, food, and music influence the entire country. Including the Saints! I love my state! Geaux Saints and Geaux LSU!

Living in Baton Rouge, I've never been more scared to just go out. People here are ruthless and do not care about anyone else's well being. It sucks here.

Nick Johnson has gotten the take on Louisiana 100% right. I lived in Louisiana for 50 years (1966-2016, ages 4-54). Most social commenters over-generalize the vast regional/cultural differences or simply get it wrong and/or out of context. This video is a great crash course on the many faces of Louisiana. Hats off to Nick Johnson and his team for putting together an informative and accurate video. 👍👍
I mean he got North Louisiana pretty wrong. Spouting out crime statistics and stuff really doesn’t tell much of the story. As long as you avoid some of the bad neighborhoods Shreveport and a lot of the nearby cities are really great places to live, quite the sportsman paradise up there!
As someone born and raised in South Louisiana, Lafayette, and currently living in North Louisiana, just north of Shreveport, pretty spot on on how you get hit by culture shock. Even the food is different. Also thank you for pronouncing Lafayette right.

Yes it is.. I’m in Lake Charles but I was born and raised in Shreveport.. culture shock is a word!! It’s hard for me to adjust in South Louisiana.. too slow but the food is ok!! Not home style soul food but it’s not bad at all! I actually love Mardi Gras better here!

Southern Louisiana is like a country of its own. I remember when I had the privilege of coming to Louisiana for the first time. The CULTURE oh the CULTURE, French, creole, Haitian, African, Vietnamese ! THE FOOD, some of the best in the world. Just amazing mash up of cultures where the people just get along, party together and live for live music. Man, if you can get a boat ride at the bottom of the boot in Louisiana, it is literally heaven on earth. One of the most beautiful places in this country hands down. Not to mention the people of Louisiana are tough as nails.

He made NY, TX, FL when the page was still young so they didnt get too detailed. Also when the page picked up he started to get people from states he would showcase to help him out.
If he were to redo those states I would help him with NY. I used to photograph and canvass the city. I made it to 400 neighborhoods back in 2009 for a full tour.
I could also help him a lot with Long island and some of the Hudson Valley

Nothing is like Louisiana! One of the last melting pots of so many cultures. Left Louisiana went to NW Florida where my daughter was born. She went to school in Louisiana and said she met the friendliest people and she truly enjoyed it. She said she understands me better now. It’s something you can’t explain.
Some of the best couple of years in my life were in Lafayette. Good friendly people, great food and a unique vibe I've never experienced elsewhere. Too bad the politicians ruined the film industry down there. I really loved being in movies.

So true, and as long as you use a little caution downtown is a great place to go nowadays, it’s really making a comeback. I will be excited when the pandemic is over because of all the cool stuff planned to open downtown and the stuff that was already cool. We have such a unique downtown I’m glad we are revitalizing it!

Nice video but you forgot to mention most of New Orleans is below sea level and Louisiana has the tallest state capital building at 450ft. The cost of living in New Orleans is going up and not so cheap anymore. Also the Mississippi River reaches its deepest point there at 200ft.

The state capital building is absolutely filthy on the outside. It needs to be cleaned the the state doesn't have the money to do it.

Although I was born in Oregon (and currently live here), I grew up in Louisiana my entire childhood, and almost all of my family lives their and I miss Louisiana soooo much. Plus, it has the best food I've ever had.

Look how many of our tax paying dollars are going to these giant corporations that really don't need it. Leave it to Louisiana to be in first place for corporate welfare. Just imagine how much better our roads could be if all the money our so called representatives gives to these multi billion dollar corporations if the money actually went towards the roads. There would be a new I-10 bridge built in Lake Charles already with no tolls. The political corruption is why we are always at the bottom of everything list.

Same goes for too much control in a system. It's just that no one can decide how much or how little that a government should have control.

Some of the best people I have ever met and continue to be friends with come from north and south Louisiana. The state gets a bad wrap from the Media. Definitely visit Lafayette and Scott for awesome pork Cracklins and Boudan.
One thing I love about Louisiana is the Cajun style food I can't get enough of that stuff.

Good job, from someone living near N.O. who grew up in the famous Ninth Ward (Hurricane Katrina fame)! I'm not crazy about all that Louisiana offers, however, I would say that you "stuck the landing"! This is so accurate. Born, raised and lived all of over that interesting state. There really is no where like it for better or worse.. but I left in 2017 for SW Missouri and unlikely I will ever move back. I miss the culture & passion but not the heat & poverty.

I was raised in Florida but years ago I moved to Grand Isle, LA. After acclimating, which took some doing, I loved it. Raised my son there and he was treated like a Cajun. He lives in Slidell now. My heart will always be in LA.

I grew up in Metairie, LA. I moved to Arizona after the hurricane. I JUST visited my home back in February 2021. It's not the same. Metairie is actually dangerous these days. Food is still the same, but the New Orleans energy isn't the same anymore.

When you live here, you really notice all the issues. It's impossible to get on social programs, roads are AWFUL, crime is bad, southern hospitality is nonexistent here. I've lived here most of my life and am amazed when I travel across the country and see how much better it is in well run states like Utah and Tennessee

Hit the nail on the head when you said that many of the younger generation move to houston for jobs. I’m unfortunately one of those statistics. Throughout college, you always heard that Louisiana educated their youth, and then they move out of state, not replenishing the tax revenue. It is sad. Corruption is a b$&@$, and it’s rampant in my home state.

I was born and raised in Baton Rouge it went from okay with warning signs of decay to the shabby crime ridden open cesspit it is today ( as is most of Louisiana) . I left Louisiana as soon as I got my ungergrad degree and will never move back.

Fun educational video, I get a real feel for a state from these videos. And with the states that I lived in (about 8) the videos match well with my experience. As far as inequality in Louisiana - one factor is that the energy industry is highly automated, it does not require many workers relative to the wealth produced. In contrast with for example healthcare (very labor intensive).
Had the best time in New Orleans back in '93. The music! Fai Do Do at Tipitina! The food! The Daqueris! Love that town!

I'm a Lafayette native. I'm really impressed how someone from outside of Louisiana could have done such an incredible job describing the state. Demographics could explain why Louisiana would be ranked worst in every category.
It’s the worst state because companies pay 12$ to honest hard working people, and those honest hard working people turn to crime.. old greedy bastards that been rich that own all the companies still want slaves except today they don’t care if you’re white or black they just want that green dollar
Great video Nick. I must admit that I am a born and raised Los Angeleno, a lot of the cities and suburbs in and around the pelican State I am familiar with in and outside of the New Orleans metro area. I got excited when you mentioned New Iberia because the area around New Iberia and Lake Charles I've always used as a reference point of where both of my grandfathers were born and raised. They weren't from either NI or Lake Charles, but my my maternal grandfather was from Abbeville and my paternal grandfather was from Franklin. I believe Abbeville is in Vermillion Parish. I used to get out my L volume encyclopedia ( remember those, they were our Wikipedia with peered reviewed information) and I knew once I found New Iberia all I had to do a but over to right in north central Louisiana and I'd see both cities. Fun fact, Tabasco sauce is manufactured in New Iberia, although it originated in the State of Tabasco in Mexico, hence the sauce's name. 😁 Next time you're in the hot sauce/Bbq sauce aisle at Piggly Wiggly or Kroger take a gander at the bottom of the back panel of the bottle.
Fun fact number two: Ellen DeGengeres is from Meterie which is a 'burb of New Orleans. I know one of the fastest ways to get run out of the state of Louisiana is for anyone to say anything bad about The Saints ( Saints fans aka Who dat nation ) take their love for their team seriously like Dallas fans do for the the Cowboys. And to talk smack about LSU (LSU football is taken just as seriously as Texas A&M and UT fans take Aggie and Longhorn football. If anyone who's not either not from Austin or College Station or a fan of the opposing team that may be playing against the Aggies or Longhorns say anything out of the within earshot of a fan , they better be glad they're in the bible belt , because they'll be in need of prayer, lol

I got a job in New Orleans and lived there for 6 months. I lived a block over from Bourbon Street.
I absolutely loved the city. It's crazy basically living on Bourbon Street. But the job didn't pay enough and my roommate moved out. I had to move over to south Alabama.

Decades ago at a mid to low price Japanese restaurant for lunch, the waiter had a good laugh when I asked for Yakisoba, “sorry, we don’t have that, it’s known as the workman lunch”
Same with all ‘poor people food’ talipa, cat fish, Pho, street tacos, ect.

@@coastalhillbilly3419 exactly. We used to boil crawfish at home in a giant boiling pot with its own burner outside. That was cause cooked was a little too expensive. Now though, the boiling pot is collecting dust lol

Of course tourists have going to Mardi Gras on their bucket list but locals will tell you the Jazz Festival, held annually in early May is better, And Bourbon Street is their first destination upon arrival. As one who has been to New Orleans at least six times, Nearby Royal Street is more scenic.

Though I haven’t faced the pain of adverse poverty, I can say that I’d understand why lower socio-economic states would be happier... from observation there seems to be more value for relations and living, appreciating simple pleasures which can be lost while constantly ‘goal chasing’ in richer countries. I feel as though such things aren’t valued as much when success and fashion are at the forefront. Easy to lose your identity when success and fashion are the main theme; how can you ever be happy if you’re chasing empty and constantly fleeting things. Sometimes less is more ( excluding the comfort that comes with financial security).

Honestly this was really accurate. My only critique is that Slidell doesn't really fit in with Mandaville and Covington etc. The shore from homes are filled with rich jerks and they're removed from the rest of Slidell by the i10 and their fancy golf and tennis courts. But where I live in Slidell it's swamp, pot holes, and heroine problems galore 🙃.

I really loved this one. Hearing all the negative stats etc is disheartening, but you have to look for a bright side. The last thing you want is to have your state being advertised as a "Go To State". All the culture you mention here would be obliterated. But, you would get lots of strip malls, coffee houses, and man buns.
Culture. Let me just think about that for a minute. The overall culture of Louisiana is corruption, out of control gangs in every nook and cranny of the state, and more corruption. The Louisiana State Police have been in the drug dealing business for God knows how many years. The same can be said for the local Sheriff Departments and Town and City Police Departments. Louisiana is just one big, continuous ghetto.

It is a state of polar opposites, with wonderful people and culture, and serious economic woes for many. It is a state of fun, good food and poor health. It is a state of great wealth which doesn’t manage to get much of it to the people. And in all that, Louisiana people are welcoming and proud for the most part, no matter which vastly different region of the state they come from. People that say it’s all swamps and crime are just ignorant. Thanks for the unboxing!

As someone from the "snob" area of Louisiana (Slidell specifically) its not that we think we are better than New Orleans, it is that we cant afford to live there. A lot of people I know live in Slidell and will go to work in New Orleans because living in the what we call 'northshore' area is a lot cheaper from everything to food, gas, and homes.
I lived in Slidell for 8 years and loved it there!

@@umb2692 take a look at floodzone maps in the area before making a move. in slidell alone some places would remain dry during the hurricane season, yet other areas would completely flood out from a heavy rainfall. I dont live in Slidell anymore myself however I definitely wouldnt put it as a bad place to live. also its close proximity to new orleans is good if you want to do some activities that Slidell doesnt offer itself.

Living is southeast louisiana we've always called them Crawfish
