  • Ever Wonder What It Was Like On Stage with Black Oak Arkansas in the Warly 70's? Well.... Here ya go!! Here's an on stage point of view with the band. This was shot in 1975 with a professional Canon reel. The sound was already killer, but I boosted it up in Davinci Resolve so you can hear Pat & Tommy better. I hope you enjoyed! Complete wiht a washboard smash!! haha

    Thank you for sharing this and other videos of your father. I was a big fan of BOA in the seventies as a teenager in Southern California. I saw them perform at the Hollywood Palladium and remember your dad sticking his head out a window and hollering at the crowd on Hollywood Boulevard while the BOA bus was driving away after the show. I also got to see him perform and talk to him briefly at a small bar/club in Palm Desert in I think the early nineties. I remember Tommy Aldridge was there to see your dad as well. I still have all my old early BOA albums. Thanks again for your videos.

    Black Oak were such an awesome band and basically created many of the rock moves, attitudes and cliches that have went on and on (and Southern Rock) I remember I bought the album 'Raunch and Roll' when I was 14 years old and particularly loved that song 'When Electricity Came to Arkansas' and used to jam out on it. I think its terrible the way that the band was cheated by the crooked industry and certain greedy players which sadly is not at all uncommon (particularly for those days) and I was able to see BOA live back in the day and it is a great memory. I hope that the band will get their due someday and in some way. It would make a cool movie. God bless Jim Dandy

    I first saw BOA just at the end of JD's pre-spandex days. All the energy was there, Jim still had his beard and was dressed in white bell-bottoms and a red shirt. The latest album was If An Angel Came To See You, Would You Make Her Feel At Home. This was at the end of September '72.
    Then, just a little over 2 months later, Raunch and Roll was recorded and JD had reinvented himself. Gone was the beard, out came the spandex and Gigolo, Hot Rod and Up were the new songs on the album. BOA (or at least Jim) had basically ditched the electric hillbilly image in favor of the strutting rooster persona most people remember him for.
    It was a drastic change. And sudden. I always wondered how that came about.
    Speaking of the newer (at that time) songs, the end of "Up" (after the drum solo) always reminded me of the end of "Free Bird" in the way the guitars wind it up tight at the end. Best that I can tell, Free Bird came just a little after BOA did the Raunch and Roll album.. I'm sure It's just a coincidence ...... LOL

    • @TheRealPiperDandy
      @TheRealPiperDandy  Před 3 lety +2

      He was just young and finding his way. I did the same thing in my early 20’s. I butterflied (as in changed) quite a bit. It wasn’t a band decision or a studio/record company decision or any of that. ❤️

    • @margaretlafountain4762
      @margaretlafountain4762 Před 3 lety +3

      @@TheRealPiperDandy Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I can see how that would be and pretty much figured something like you describe. Still, I'm glad I got to see BOA pre-Raunch and Roll as there were some personal favorites they performed that I never saw them do live after that, including my all-time favorite "To Make Us What We Are".
      The Raunch and Roll tour couldn't be beat for the energy level, though. Never seen anything else that compared to it!!
      Any comment on the similarities between "Up" and "Free Bird" with the guitar windup at the end? It sure seems to me that Skynyrd was listening to some BOA at that time and drew more than a little musical inspiration from "Up". It's ok if you don't but, for those that might be curious, "Raunch and Roll" was released in February 1973 and Skynyrd's first album was recorded late March - early May 1973. I'll just say I trust my ears!

At the time The Gin Blossoms were on the verge of hitting it big, they were opening for BOA that night. It was a rocker crowd and ready for BOA. The audience booed the Blossoms and kept yelling "We want Black Oak!" so Blossoms cut it short. Shortly after Blossoms hit it big, but everytime I saw them I had to chuckle thinking of that night.
