This episode was made before the before the smart phones and the explosive growth of social media. In the 14 years that passed, we can text, talk, and video on the numerous platforms on phones, we can have access to the total human knowledge in the palm of our hands. Thanks to inflight wifi, we can literally do all that from anywhere in the world, even over vast oceans. I find it amusing that for years now, I have used my phone for everything, except making actual phone calls. It makes me wonder what the next 10 years are going to hold.

I find the apology line piece after 40:00 quite interesting. Where it is stated that due to the anonymity and lack of physical presence, people are more likely to say things they would not say in real life. This has a lot of parallels with social media nowadays as well.
The entire last 3rd of the video definitely was just the same questions we ask today regarding the internet, especially the woman who made the "space age tech for stone age brains". I've often thought this about modern tech in general.

The phone / face test is flawed because he didn't deduct strictly from voice, which I assume was the point. He asked questions indirectly describing the person on the other end. A more accurate test would be having each person tell him the same thing.
This is still primarily meant to be entertainment, despite being fairly educational, so while you are right about the test having a loophole that Clarkson abused, it was much quicker and more entertaining the way they did it.
In America we grew up hearing about how it was Alexander Graham Bell who invented the telephone, we never heard of Elisha Grey. wow! this was all news to me. of course Bell had the great fortune that his name happened to be Bell and that we associate a telephone call with the ringing bells from a phone. the US telephone company for over 120 years was even called the Bell telephone company.

They then said that the reason they were able to listen to his conversations was because all communication across the atlantic had to be done through radio. But they had just said that Churchill and the Americans were talking by phone. This doesn't make any sense. Was he speaking to the Americans by phone or by radio? If it were a phone, how could the Germans pick it up from radio signals? I'm probably just being thick but I found this whole part confusing.
"Raido" is only the way to carry the information modulated to analog radio signal. You can carry "phone" more ways than just by cable. GSM is basically radio, wifi too - just different frequencies. It makes sense if you have some basic knowledge.
The unreliable homing pigeon idea is entertaining, but in a war zone I'd bet on the pigeon over the telephone, they are immune electronic jamming, water proof, never need charging and even if you get the address wrong they always return home. When future electronic warfare makes electronics useless, the genetically engineered sky-blue pigeons will rule.
