Never realized that they intended to copy historical events (I.e. concerts move for move) in much of this movie. I also never really gave a care about Elvis then I saw this movie. Guy went through it. Much respect to both the real Elvis & Austin Butler for bringing the story to life. I’m a fan now. 😊

exactly ! i was looking for a comment like this ! he became a legend by giving lets say the 60% of what he had or could give... first was the modest years of 50'-60' that he couldnt be himself and then this colonel that held him back in so many ways and plus had a part on his health issues ...
he was so bored from some point, had no challenges in his career, he was not "allowed" to do what he wanted and could do... just stuck there in las vegas performing the same things for years... so pitty....

Exactly. That's what Baz said at Cannes. Russwood had to be a "compilation" of all of Elvis's concerts. He was even warned by a judge to not make any obscene moves or he'd be arrested (per EP's girlfriend Juanita, in her memoir). There were always warrants drawn up for his arrest, his impact was so volatile at the time.

So much fun to watch and it was great to see Gladys and Dodger in the audience back in the 50’s. Excellent! This scene was very accurate however, it did not occur in russwood altho he did go a concert there. The riot we see happened in Florida, so this " trouble" scene was a compilation of several concerts cobbled together. Baz even said that in an interview. Nothing about elvis was made up but for the movie, presented in a way for audiences who never saw elvis in the 50s performing. My mom who is 94 remembers elvis being on Louisiana Hayride. That was a very long time ago and Baz had to use whatever old footage they could get but also listened to people who were with elvis back then and many others who have written about those days. Priscilla knows the most from the 60s on but who is still alive from the 50s? Elvis did not care for Hollywood and steered clear of all that. A lot of what Baz used came from Jerry Schilling, Priscilla and bios and real life home movies and "documentary" type footage. When Elvis knew he was being filmed he would be normal and funny but behaved. In private he was moody, and temperamental and impatient but always a kind person.

Yes austin did get all the moves down for sure fantastic performance.. I loved the movie BUT... Many things were off... as in Elvis was not lonely they separated in 72 him and Priscilla divorced in 73 He met Linda Thompson in 72 dated from 72 - 76 so it comes off to new fans that He was sad depressed and lonely because they ended off the movie with the separation as a Lifetime fan I hate they did that because now all I see are new fans saying aww He was so sad lonely and depressed as that is the way he was portrayed in the movie .... HE was happy funny loving loved his fans more than anything... to leave it off like that really upset me I've loved him since the 70's as a little girl ... I was 10 when He passed away I found My Mom & Dad crying my Dad never cried and it scared me then they told us and we all cried the whole world stopped and mourned on August 16, 1977... We watched the funeral on Tv I remember it like yesterday... understand we didn't have internet media etc all we had was TV record player stereo and lucky to get to see him in concert which my mom and dad did in 1975... ELVIS WAS OUR WORLD....He was the first... and My grandparents experienced it first hand... and my elders in my family... My Dad owned all his records his music was going all the time in our home... continued that my whole life My boys 32 & 27 LOVE him and know so much history about him through me.... Elvis's cousin Billy Smith was so mad about the movie he went and He said that was not the Elvis I knew and grew up with and he is the only surviving original Memphis Mafia member.... Plus Gladys was his aunt / Gladys Love Smith Presley he said SHE WAS NOT A DRUNK... THAT PISSED HIM OFF and it would me too if she were my kin.. Billy lived at Graceland grew up with him was with him touring on movie sets constantly but Billy has a youtube channel -- Elvis fans matter where he tells real stories about Elvis and they are hilarious

I loved this scene from the movie, but was wondering (as a person who didn't know a lot about Elvis), did Elvis really lie on the stage and roll around? Did he really grab that RCA dog (which was hilarious)? Did he really get down on his knees at the edge of the stage? Apparently the scene is based on things that did happen at some point--not necessarily on that night, but at some point.
If I judge correctly, it looks like (in the movie) that the police put a big rope down the center of the audience--black people on one side, white people on the other. Then when everyone started rocking out, people started jumping over the rope and that's when the police pulled out the night sticks and started beating people up. Did this happen at an Elvis concert? I'd like to hear more about it.

    • @SheenaRea
      @SheenaRea Před rokem +6

Yes, Elvis did do some raunchy things with the dog statue, but I'm not sure that it happened at Russwood. That scene is a composite of many of his other concerts. Baz said he watched alot of footage of Elvis being "crazy" at his concerts: lying on the stage, gyrating around, singing to the women, going nuts; so Baz wanted to include that "vibe" in the Russwood scene. -- As for the roped-off sections for blacks/whites, I'm not sure that happened at Russwood. However, most of Presley's venues in the South were at fairs and festivals which had black/white sections only. The Alabama-Mississippi Dairy Fairs had roped-off areas separating the blacks from the whites. Accounting sheets of the southern venues where Elvis played typically showed a "black only" and "white only" section in their theaters, typical for those times. Here again I believe Baz used that idea in the Russwood scene, to show the separation of the races, underscored with clips of Senator John Eastland's anti-black rhetoric. The people breaking through the ropes and dancing with each other, who knows? Was this artistic license?

Trouble didn’t even come out until a couple years later. Good for movie story line but not accurate. Other parts were accurate though, like him wiggling his pinky in response to them telling him not to. Nobody told Elvis what to do

I hate sounding like an annoying person, but "Trouble" was written in '58. Just wanted to mention that.
And yes, I know the movie version takes place in '56.

Except this concert didn't happen at Russwood Park, it happened in Florida...and this song wasn't recorded until 1958. Two years later. And he wasn't rushed off stage or arrested or threatened with jail vs going to the Army. This movie is mostly fiction.

Russwood Park concert had some blacks in the audience, IIRC from the archive photos. Maybe that's why the movie emphasized the integration issue.

austin did a great job. but elvis isn't singing 'trouble' here. he first sang it in the movie 'king creole' in 1958. either way, it worked well the way baz did it.

Until I saw this movie I didn't really know to much about Elvis. After watching this movie I started researching Elvis and talking to grandparents and people from that time. It was all fascinating. I've watched Elvis movies and even that horrible Priscilla movie. That one was just all around bad. Bad acting, bad representation of Elvis. This movie Elvis really got you thinking. Brilliant job by Austin Butler he should have won an Oscar. If you haven't caught it the movie is on Netflix right now.

Trouble was composed in 1958 for "King Creole" movie and that concert was in 1956.
Can someone tell me how could Elvis sing Trouble in 1956 when that wasn't composed yet? 😂😂😂

I'll be honest, I didn't think the movie was entirely successful. I think it was a mistake to tell the story from the colonel's perspective and It was undoubtedly one of Tom Hanks' worst performances, he had way too much screen time and the bizarre accent was so distracting, especially when the real colonel had a southern US accent not a weird Dutch/US hybrid accent. It makes the choice to go with the poorly performed accent even stranger.
That said, Austin Butler's performance was absolutely exceptional to the point where the movie only works because of the strength of his central performance. He definitely deserved an Oscar.
