    Just saw the movie an hour ago. Immediate thoughts were, he could’ve been so much more in life but was held down and fed lies and pills. Truly an American legend that never had the opportunity to be more than what he wished for. He paved the way for stage presence and celebrity persona.

      Yes! I felt like the film barely scratched the surface and I just want to know more. The hardest part to watch was Las Vegas and how heavily he was manipulated by Parker to stay there. It seemed that Elvis felt an enormous amount of loyalty to him and really saw him as a father since his own father was somewhat unstable and distant. I really wish Elvis could have seen the world like he wanted. What an incredible person and this film honors him greatly. R.I.P. Elvis 🙏🕊

    My mom was a HUGE Elvis fan. As a young woman, she took a train from Idaho to Oregon to see him play. Didn't have a lot of money, so she sat in nosebleed seats and was sad because everyone was screaming so loud, she could barely hear him sing. Got on the train heading home, and pretty soon -- wait, did I mention my mom was gorgeous? -- well, pretty soon, here comes the Colonel. Turns out, Elvis was on the train and had spotted her. He sent the Colonel to invite her back to his car. They spoke and Elvis signed a dollar bill for her. He actually invited her to join him in California, but my mama was a really good girl, knew what that sort of invite meant, and politely declined. 🥰

    The film has a fairytale quality which, to me, required an embellishing of the story. The carnival scene, the hall of mirrors, the concert scenes - I think we understood they had an element of fantasy but they created a magical feeling to the fairytale.

    • @altereddogma
      @altereddogma Před rokem +4

      I don’t think the concert scenes were embellished. Have you Seen the footage of Elvis in his early days, including those of him performing at county fairs? Elvis was doing Michael Jackson moves long before Michael Jackson was even born. So really, MJ did Elvis moves. Or footage of Elvis’ Las Vegas shows? Elvis was one of those rare (at least rare these days) performers who could hold an audience with only his own presence on a stage. If you’ve not seen it yet, watch his performance at the end of his `68 special, when he he sings ‘I Can Dream.’ It’s just Elvis al by his lonesome yet the performance is moving and so compelling.

    • @JacoWium
      @JacoWium Před 10 měsíci +1

      Indeed. There are symbolic and metaphorical elements in those scenes mentioned to have never happened in real life. The production as a whole would be a whole lot poorer without those elements. I think Luhrman did a great job of marrying reality (like the realistic live portrayals mentioned by the other poster) with the fantastical/fairytale aspects to produce a widescreen feast. I don't think it was a perfect movie at all but I get what Luhrman was doing, and besides, he did stay true to the fundamentals of the real Elvis's factual history.

      Elvis def got into a ‘rut’ and out lived the Las Vegas residency… He obv loved Graceland so much he must have relaxed there instead of travelling for pleasure and having a more normal private life. But he knew how people loved him by the success of Las Vegas and the come back specials he did. He must have found it hard to find ‘balance’ in his life - and possibly ‘new’ direction looking beyond the Las Vegas gig. I thought it was a brilliant venue for him initially, as he was such a huge Star internationally, bringing people to HIM, saving him the instability of touring was inspired.mAt the time, Tom Jones and every major performer was pictured visiting Elvis and Las Vegas. Unfortunately, for the results of his performance and what he did for promoting Las Vegas as well, he would have been under rewarded. Since then, a Las Vegas residency has been standard stability for the World’s biggest names - Celine Dion etc etc. He def stayed at the Las Vegas gig too long. If Parker, as suspected, couldn’t travel, and this emerged from his own strategy, the only tragedy is him undercutting the Star. Elvis would UNDOUBTEDLY have been a Star, his talent and looks and style were his alone, and any other manager would have brought him to public attention.
      But Elvis’s story is a WONDERFUL EXAMPLE of always MANAGING UOUR OWN MONEY - no one is immune. Vernon was no financial manager, which was helpful for Parker, and Elvis was focused on his performing and tbh, he wrote amazing songs which will live forever… While he trusted and surpassed Parker in managing his career choices, he had the space to create. Priscilla has done the most amazing job of managing his memory and legacy and proven to be the best financial manager - gr8 choice Elvis 👏👏❤️❤️

    This movie really exceeded expectations. I thought it would be impossible to make a good Elvis Biopic because he is simply one of those icons who are way too larger than life to have a biopic that would do Justice. At first I never really took Austin Butler seriously as the King, but as the movie washes you over, you do get convinced that he is him. He really captured his dance moves and charisma. One thing I liked a lot is how they used his songs to help create the narrative. I mean in Bohemian Rhapsody, Malek had to perform Queen songs, just because they are Queen songs. But here, the music, the lyrics, really helped us understand the emotion and what was really going through Elvis' mind at a particular point in his life. Like when he was all alone in a hotel, singing are you lonesome tonight, you really know where he was at that time, literally and metaphorically.

I never looked that closely at his life so I never really knew how as big as he was he could've been even bigger and how much his manager cheated him both financially and professionally. I have a newfound admiration for Elvis not just for his part in the advent of rock n roll or having a such profound effect on the music industry that it changed forever, but the fact that the man was just absolute passion when he performed. Obviously there's no way you can fit a 20 year career into a 2+ hour movie so there was things I was hoping to see re-enacted that weren't there, but I can forgive, but it's a testament to Butler that this movie is so well received given how many people will have had such high expectations.
