Switch 2: How Handheld PCs are Becoming Nintendo's Next-Gen Competition - Next-Gen Console Watch

  • Welcome back to Next-Gen Console Watch, our show following everything happening with the latest gaming hardware. This week Daemon Hatfield is joined by IGN’s Executive Editor of Tech, Bo Moore. And IGN Tech Reporter Taylor Lyles. Both of which were in attendance at CES last week.
And this week we’re discussing the surprising circumstances of the growing handheld gaming PC industry. It started with the Steam Deck a couple years ago, and now there are several alternatives like the ASUS ROG Ally, the Lenovo Legion Go, Logitech G Cloud, and others. With the Switch 2 presumably coming at some point, do these new handheld gaming PC's represent a serious challenge to Nintendo?

Affordability is key. However, Nintendo needs to reward loyalty with backward compatibility and seriously address the defective joycons with hall-sensor sticks to make the transition more appealing.

Other than affordability, power and a list of games that it can play, what most handhelds lack nowadays is battery life. Handheld PCs mostly use APU that are power hungry and drain the battery easily. Since they mentioned that Nintendo is not that concerned for power on their devices, they can take that as an advantage for having better battery life on their "switch 2" and that alone can be a selling point to people who are into handhelds.

Nintendo's new handheld has to compete with the Deck and its competitors now. While having numerous handhelds is going to be a common situation (people are likely to have a PC handheld and Switch for the respective platforms), not everyone will have the room to hold both a Deck and Switch for their trips. People will just bring the one they like more, so they'd buy more games for that platform than the other.
Additionally, Steam is a more user-friendly platform than Nintendo. You have online features for free, better social features, Remote Play and Remote Play Together (which is great for couch co-op games), and user reviews. The Deck can also access the user's Steam library, which means that you don't need to buy more games, or buy the same ones again to play on it. That's incredibly compelling.
At best, the Switch successor will have backwards compatibility and better joycons.

In the West - yes, that's true, this could eventually become serious competition to Nintendo. In Japan, Nintendo will do fine regardless, since PC gaming just isn't nearly as popular over there as it is in most of the world. So, it's mostly the rest of the world where their consoles may or may not fail - but they probably won't, seeing that you can't get most Nintendo exclusives legally anywhere else. I'd assume they're going to take some cues from the competition though, and make a more powerful system this time, if only for the sake of the third-party releases.

There are more handheld devices on the market than in 2017 yes, but there is only one handheld device which is a "mass market device" and that is the Switch and the Switch 2 will be the next one. It is amusing to see how so many hype up the Steam deck arguably the "biggest" competition to the Switch while at the same time the Switch sells more units in a single quarter during its 7th year than the Steam deck does lifetime. There simply is no similar product to the Switch which targets the mass market and unless Sony or Microsoft make a handheld there wont be one for a very long time.

But as history has shown (NES to SNES, GB to GBA, DS to 3DS, Wii to Wii U), even playing Nintendo games isn't enough to draw people in when it's just a more powerful version of what people already had. All of those systems sold significantly less than the system that they replaced.

this really feels like a talk with some people who are just on the fringe of the handheld market, there's nothing new or surprising about the market, it's been around for years, and this is maybe a video for people who know literally nothing about it.

These devices combined, don't sell in a year what Nintendo sells in a month. They're not competition, anymore than they're competition for the PC.

This handheld pc gaming market reminds me of the stories of all the old gaming consoles that were all out at the same time but then disappeared, only leaving a few gaming consoles to survive with Nintendo basically being the only one from that Era still making consoles

yeah now it's nintendo's turn to disappear if they continue to ignore the need to compete against the steamdeck, nintendo got cooked when sony came out with the PS1, and now nintendo is fixing to be forgotten if nintendo continues to ignore the need for better hardware

If we buy Nintendo, aren’t we supporting fun innovative game development?

You get a fantastic performance from Nintendo games on Switch, but 3rd party games like COD or Assassins Creed don’t run well.
But then if you buy a Nintendo product you probably couldn’t care less about COD and Assassins Creed. Give me Mario and Zelda!

Switch 2 will be in a league on its own. These mf have no idea , switch is a system released almost a decade ago and still its the best handheld gaming device and still keeps release bangers.
