- On this week's Next-Gen Console Watch, Daemon is joined by Ryan McCaffrey, host of IGN's Xbox podcast, Podcast Unlocked, and Max Scoville, host of IGN's PlayStation show, Beyond. The topic is actually Nintendo, with the news that the Switch 2 has reportedly been delayed to 2025, in order to build up stock to fight scalpers. With the current Switch entering its 7th year and the hardware showing its age, would 2025 be the right time to release the successor? Or should Nintendo get it out this year as previously reported?

Do you really think that Nintendo is going to release their next console near the end of this console generation or the start of the next one? We're already at the halfway point of the 9th generation. We've also entered Switch's final year. We're going to have a new console by next year.

That makes no sense when you already know the next switch is gonna perform at last gen levels. It’s already gonna be outdated.
And that’s already using artificial upscaling as a crutch.
A spring launch also makes sense for a handheld, as people begin to think about getting outside more and traveling.

If it's fall 2024, Switch2 will have to share the stage with the PS5/XsX. IF in spring 2025 it can have the spotlight all to itself.
GTA6 is coming next year. And Sony will really go hard in terms of marketing and associate GTA6 with PS5 Pro

Share the stage how so? No one gives a f about PS5 or Series X now, and by November people will give even less fcks about these consoles. Plus Sony announced they have basically nothing for this year. They cleared the way for Switch 2 in 2024. In 2025 there will be GTA6, PS5 Pro, more exclusives from Sony and Microsoft... 2024 is the perfect year for a new Switch

Yeah, was actually pretty surprised they didn't have Seth along for this one that was like 100% Nintendo. They've had him on before for way less Nintendo talk than this episode had. They really might want to consider having a three person team with Daemon more often tbh.

Would be nice to have the Switch successor release sooner rather than later. Especially when Nintendo's current hardware is in dire need of an upgrade. Expect to see more remakes/remasters and ports of older games until their next console releases.
2027 is the right time, so they have more time to develop and optimize Metroid Prime 4 and new Zelda game

Launching it in March 2025 makes sense overall. However, Nintendo may want to find some new game with mass appeal to release in the second half of this year if they don’t want to kill all of the Switch’s remaining momentum for the holidays.

Imagine what a 8 years gap between Switch 1 & Switch 2 processor can do. We know that mobile technologies vastly improved every year. Between non customised (Switch 1) vs customised (Switch 2) processor it's gigantic advancement in graphics power & efficiency 💪

Stop overthinking the Pokemon Legends announcement. Detective Pikachu used the exact same verbage of releasing for Nintendo Switch systems when it was officially revealed.

Nintendo needs to be sure that when new Xbox releases and also PS6, then Nintendo needs to be powerful enough to handle ports that developers make for these systems.

I’d love a pokemon game that runs more than 7fps, the national dex, being able to go into buildings like previous gens instead or just menus at the door. For a game that makes billions each release they have the most bare bones pathetic quality imaginable. Done supporting it.

Don’t ever compare this launch with 2020 launches. PlayStation and Xbox had supply issues which made it harder to release an abundant amount at once. There’s no more shortages on anything just a bad economy at the moment so people might struggle more to buy one this time around

No, Switch consoles usually means all variants of the Switch, it can include possible Switch 2, but they already used this terminology before to specify Switch, Switch Lite, etc.
There’s not guarantee that the next console will have a Switch moniker. If it’s a Switch variant then yes, if it’s a next-gen console then will not be Switch-name system.

Announcing Switch 2 prior to 2024 holiday season would cannibalize holiday sales of the Switch 1. Especially if 2 is backwards compatible
Really depends on strategy. First party only for an assumed 7-year prime life cycle, or embracing third party? If the former, doesn’t matter even if performance specs are underpowered. Perhaps same strategy as the Switch. However, if AAA third party games needed over that same time period as other competitors seem to be finding necessary, then Nintendo should delay at all costs to continue to procure more powerful hardware specs. Consumer concept of next gen console gaming is only about 3 years away and will reset the bar which will impact Nintendo one way or the other. Also, Nintendo will find traditional mobile device manufacturers being more competitive in this space as well.
The specs aren't to change with a small delay. That stuff tends to be set way in advance.

Nintendo do limited prints of games and fight emulation to keep game prices high. So Nintendo effectively encourages scalping.

Not true. They make most of their money on software sales, accessories and services, and scalpers aren't buying those.
They want a high attach rate & people buying up tons of software, subscribing to NSO, making eShop purchases, etc. and the more units that are sitting on a scalper's shelves, the less money they make.
Not even Nintendo can combat scalpers. If they’re going to drag their heels on releasing competent hardware, they better release a system that isn’t poorly designed and received. (WiiU all over again.)
