So I will happily support Valve, and I hope the Steam Deck 2 will be successful as well.

      I'm envision a Legion Go Cyberdeck with one of those 144 Hz, 15-inch displays. If you flip the legion vertically, it's about as tall as a 15-inch, 16:9 screen, so you can make a pretty sick portable dual-screen Cyberdeck.

    Picked up the ROG Ally when it first came on sale during Black Friday and have been very happy with it. It was kind of an impulse buy because I wanted to play games outside of my office. Originally thought I’d play mostly D4 but in reality it let me rediscover gems in my backlog and discover new ones to fall in love with (Hifi rush). Playing at my desk always felt like a big commitment, but playing anywhere else made gaming feel so much accessible and leisurely. Honestly, it’s kind of rekindled my joy of gaming. Get the device that fits your budget and meets your portable PC gaming needs. For me, that's the Steam Deck OLED. It has the best battery life of all of these, good enough performance with a careful and intentional balance between power and efficiency, an absolutely beautiful screen at a very purposefully chosen resolution for a 7.4" display, fantastic build quality, comfortable ergonomics, and excellent support from both Valve and the community, the former of which actually has good reason to continue support beyond the initial sale of the device.

    • @azenyr
      @azenyr Před 2 měsíci

      This is an extremely important point that most fail to notice. Windows 11 really only offers "better compatibility" if all you want is modern triple A gaming (that are very hard to run on these devices anyway): If all you want is indies, older triple As, retro gaming or just older windows games, SteamOS/Linux actually runs them much better than Windows 11. And really, the newer triple As that dont run on SteamOS are few and far in between. Currently I've been playing Elden Ring and Monster Hunter World perfectly, zero configuration needed. (And my Elden Ring is a p*rated copy with a windows fitgirl crack that runs perfectly and was very easy to install in Bottles. If I ever buy a ROG Ally I will install Steam OS on there or one of those linux distros that try to copy steam OS and be happy. Windows 11 on these handhelds is horrible. Every time I see one (Ally or legion GO) in the store I go there and see Teams and OneDrive opened up in the middle of the screen (windows installs and opens them automatically) and get reminded on how I would HATE Windows 11 on my gaming handheld. Too much bullsht, too much bloat.

    I loved my OG Steam Deck and I love my OLED even more now that I have it. It's a really solid upgrade. I'm not really interested in the other handhelds aside from the better performance, but at this point they're weaker in other categories that matter to portable gaming and the performance boost isn't enough for me to care when the Deck is as supported and optimized for the games I want to play as they are and continue to be.
    The overall polished and comfortable experience will always reign supreme, but there will also always be a use case for any of these devices that depends specifically on the user since they're unique enough for someone to want one over the other. It's good to have all of these options and I can't wait to see what the future holds in the handheld gaming space.

Firstly, Windows is far from ideal on a handheld, microsoft needs to get deeply involved to actually optimize or even make a fork for handhelds for it to be even close to viable. Right now Windows is even a bad experience on regular laptops. Secondly, Microsoft are extremely bad at fixing bugs and very good at introducing them, so ”Microsoft will support” is not even an valid argument. Thirdly, there are things that even Microsoft can’t fix that requires the manufacturers to release new device and firmware drivers, and especially Asus laptop division (who are likely the ones supporting the Ally) have an extremely bad track record of this. They usually stop supporting a device within the same year of release, and this is a fact. They for example have still not fixed fTPM stutter on hundreds of devices from 2020-2022. They instead left millions of users in the dust with a very severe bug that is unfixable by anyone else as it is a firmware level bug. Lenovo are a little bit better at this but still, they don’t really care much about previous released hardware after 1 year either. At least with Valve it’s guaranteed.

    My opinion is that the Steam Deck is the better overall portable "PC" gaming system. Steam OS is great and the extra power of the other systems is a bit pointless. It requires going to 25W rather than 15W and that's going to kill battery life. Watt for watt, the Steam Deck performs as good, and sometimes better. If you're going to need to be tethered to an AC adapter to get the extra performance from those devices, you're better off just using a gaming laptop. Legion had one on sale on Black Friday for $800 with an RTX 4060. That would run circles around the Ally or LegionGo. I've got an older Legion with an RTX 2070 along with a Steam Deck. The Steam Deck is just a better and more cohesive experience than the other two and makes way more sense especially with a decent and more versatile laptop.

      You're not wrong. But based on my observation at least locally (asia) people tend to go with the ally simply because it can do gaming and is technically a PC when docked. Not a lot of people can afford a gaming PC or laptop around here because it tends to be overpriced (180-200 USD more due to import tax), Hence the Ally seems to be a more common sight, for some reason the ally z1 extreme tends to be cheaper than the SteamDeck Oled (again, probably due to less import tax on Asus coming from china/SG/HK than that of SteamDeck coming directly from the US).

      I also was able to snag an open box RoG at a MASSIVE discount. I got it for $470 and have had no issues with it. It definitely is not the system I would recommend to someone who has NEVER used a computer extensively, as it is a daunting learning curve at first. It took me about 2 afternoons to get the hang of the controls and fluidly summon the keyboard, swap between desktop mode/gamepad mode, but now I'm operating it almost as fast as my regular PC.
      I have no issue with the touch screen, and the joystick control of the mouse is well optimized all things considered.
      My biggest thing with it is that compared to the Steam Deck, I can run Elder Scrolls Online which is absolutely critical. I am amazed that people choose a steam deck's OLED screen over being able to run mods for a game. Also Destiny 2 on a handheld is fire, but impossible on a Steam Deck due to the anti-cheat software flagging it as suspicious.

    I got my ally last week and im absolutely loving it! I dont even use armory crate, but its fine for what it is.Outside of changing settings if you need to, armory crate is the desktop version of snapchat on a smart phone lol. And by that i mean why do i need an app to do what i can already do straight outta the box,if that makes sense hah.If you dont like windows on a handheld, go with the steam deck, But imo you get so much more versatility and performance with the ally.

    I impulse bought the Steam Deck OLED, and that OLED screen is FANTASTIC. I have another PC handheld, the AOKZOE A1 Pro which has a 1200p display, but I'd rather have the 800p OLED display.
    The Legion Go was really tempting, but the battery is too small for a device that big, plus only 16GB of RAM isn't enough for something with that high of a resolution display.

      Tbf, battery banks are so compact and powerful now, that you can easily double or quadruple your playtime for not that much money. I have two battery banks, one was $150, fits in my backpack, and gives me a solid 16 hrs of playtime, the other was $60, fits in a pocket, and easily doubles my Deck's runtime. Battery life has never been an issue with the Deck for me.

    I'm playing through the Arkham Trilogy at 1600P 144 FPS on the Go.
    It's silly how nice the screen is. I was tempted to trade it in for an OLED, but it feels like an iPad browsing the store, as opposed to the Switch-quality screen you'd get on a Deck. In game though, maybe you wouldnt mind.

    • @heavyequipmech2693
      @heavyequipmech2693 Před 5 měsíci +2

      There is no way in hell you're getting close to 144 fps running at 1600p on the go!! You'd be lucky to average 20fps with that resolution. I'd say low settings @ 900p and you'll average about 60fps though

    Ally is the winner here. ASUS fixing everything now. And reg battery life still steamdeck wins it. But you all have to remember steamdeck was so buggy during launch. We all trusted steam and now ally is same too.. those who complains about user friendly, here s answer for you. Windows 11 gonna bring handheld mode. User friendly windows + millions of game then u won’t regret buying windows handheld..

    to me my priority to choose was that the legion go is all the above + its able to be used as a normal pc with its fps mode. Im a pc gamer and not usually a "controller" user but in some games i do use controller like rocket league etc etc, to me the overall diversity of usage the legion go has was a clear winner . I use mine on either 1280x800 or 1920x1200 and never actually use it at full rez since it wont make that much of difference on a 8" screen anyway. And the best part is with a few system & graphic tweaks here and there its the ultimate portable gamer all in one device. I mean i never use it "on the go" or what i would describe as on the go "commute" in (bus/train) etc since i drive to my destination and role out the whole device and all i need is the charger nothing else, i got my jbl buds and i got both controller and a mouse combi in one package. That is quite a large difference from when i had to pack my entire 17" asus rog laptop + the brick that weighs twice+ of the legion go on its own + headset / mouse and the list goes on an on. With the legion go its just drop the legion case in a small backpack with the charger and thats it, the fact that i go from 4/5+ kg to 1.5 kg is a clear pros over cons on its own, so if you're mostly a pc gamer go for the legion go and if you're a xbox / ps gamer go for asus. The steam deck is a no brainer for me since i game on multiple platforms other than steam and the downgrade of rez & screen size is not optimal for me even if it got better battery i would still choose legion go since in my case i never use it "on the go" but always seated / laying so running out of battery is of no worry for me.

    I don't understand why a lot of these reviews hype up the Steam OS. Its essentially just Steam Big Picture Mode. Which you can have on your ally or legion go. I sold my original steam deck for the upgraded power of the ROG Ally. I love the ally however I really am drawn to the detachable controllers and fps mode on the Lenovo GO. Having a tough time deciding on pulling the trigger. I want the upgraded screen to play cs however I think I would also rather wait till the next handheld comes out with a better chip or even better performance since they have the same chip the ally and go.

  • @fpvpilot7713
    @fpvpilot7713 Před 4 měsíci +1

    Just buy both like I did and test them yourself. You will end up keeping the Ally like I did. It is far better. Sound, size, weight, looks, game compatibility, game smoothness, resolution, variable refresh, 1080p, etc. No longer do I have to check to see if a game is supported and having windows 11 is far better if you are a pc gamer already. I had bought the Steam deck oled limited edition. Sound was not as good as my lcd version and I like the Ally screen better. Friends at work saw the Steam deck side by side with the Ally and all bought the Ally. One guy's first question was Can I run Game pass on it? Another asked Can I play the game Black Desert on it. The answer was that you can only on the Ally. They also could go to a nearby Best buy and buy the Ally with a choice to return it for 15 days.

      Fair question, and mostly it's because we wanted to compare the most popular systems. I really liked the Ayaneo 2 when I reviewed it at the beginning of the year, but it just doesn't have the same level of available or support that you get from Valve, ASUS and Lenovo, which makes its stuff more of a niche choice.
