  • In today's video we discuss dealing with running injuries with Olympic runner Alexi Pappas (@alexipappas). Alexi shares her experiences with a hamstring injury after the 2016 Summer Games in Rio and some of the strategies she used to heal herself quickly, maintain her mental sanity, and come back a stronger/smarter runner for it.

Wow what she said was exactly what I'm going through right now and I'm not even an Olympic athlete. This just shows the mental aspect of running. All about balance and recognizing when you have step it back a bit to let your body catch up even though your mind is telling you otherwise. So many things we take for granted 🙏

I've only been running for 6 weeks. Following your videos, my 5k has gone down (So far) from 47 minutes to 36.5 minutes.

“We know how to work hard, we don’t always know how to be proud of ourselves.” Good reminder to give ourselves kudos where kudos are due. Thanks for another great video 😀

I just tore my hip flexor.
sitting out for two weeks now, got a little better, went for a light jog yesterday and it still hurts a bit so I stopped.
I do strength training once or twice a week but this is killing me. I wanted to run.
I also enjoy eating less as it just felt like my body doesn't need as much nutrition as when I was running almost every day.
*sigh ... heal heal heal! :D

I keep coming back to this video because I was diagnosed with a lower leg stress fracture last month and it completely broke my heart. Hearing Alexi talk about doing what you can really helps calm my anxiety over my fracture and motivate me to keep doing the exercises I am able to do to come back stronger and healthier sooner rather than later hopefully. Thanks for this.

Really good info here. I was preparing for my first half marathon, during training I kept getting hurt, it was almost a comedic amount of random injuries. My takeaways:
    1. Pulling out of the race was a huge weight off my chest, because I was stressing so much about trying to heal and basically giving myself a deadline to my recovery. After I pulled out, it was easier to focus on what was causing the injuries and what I can do to prevent them.
    2. I was unaware of how complicating running can be, so while I was recovering, I was able to educate myself more on things like running form, and all around strength training.
    3. After learning more, and to stay busy, I worked on leg strength, balance, flexibility, anything that could make my body more efficient, which I probably wouldn't have focused on if I didn't get injured.

This is a good video. I love Alexi saying how we have to be proud of ourselves especially for sitting out and recuperating during an injury. Mental toughness includes abstaining sometimes.

I so needed this video as I am recovering from plantar fasciitis. I had to defer a race that I ran very well last year due to this injury! When I was cheering my husband on during this race from the sidelines I did feel like a kid who was left out on the playground! I will remember a lot of the quotes from this video as I get back into running, hopefully very soon! Thank you!

Thanks guys for this. I suffered a hip labrum tear during a 100mile race last August and it's been with me since, struggling from a mental aspect as well as a physical one. I needed to hear some of this stuff more than you know.

  • @innerworkingsinspiration2561

I never thought of the idea of mental health and running performance. My take was, have a bad day, run it out, not, work on the bad day, then run.
Sleep, nutrition, and attitude all play a part. I’m now at an age where I see more that recovery and injury are increased when the above factors are not met. Youth can only get away with it for so long.

A lot of good philosophical words of wisdom in there. As an injured runner I am riding a lot of miles on my bike but it’s not nearly as satisfying as running since I am good at running and relatively bad at cycling. I know I need to take the ego out of the equation but it’s so much more pleasurable to do things that you’re good at.

Great video ! I love to cross train but it has to ignite my passion as close to running as I can emulate while my hip heals, which for me was a Peleton or similar interactive bike 🚴🏽, it’s different for everyone. Passion needs an outlet.

With the concentric exercises, I might recommend focusing on using both legs and then using a single leg on the eccentric phase of the movement.

I've had a grade two hamstring strain, and I can run a 10k, but after, I feel like it is going to cramp, all depends on how fast I do it. But it is a mental thing, that once you are injured you feel like you can't do anything, but can't should not be in our vocabulary. Dry needling was the best remedy, but I am cautious of what I do.

I had Inguinal Hernia repair surgery 11 days ago. Due to slight complication it was open rather than keyhole, and have had mesh put in. I went out for a 2 mile walk this morning and really feeling it. How long realistically before I can start doing some easy runs? Are there any exercises that I can do to help recovery?

Hi Craig- Since we're not online doctors, we really can't give medical advice for activity post-surgery. I'd definitely suggest talking to your doctor about how soon you can start running again. Hope the healing process is quick!

Accupuncture maybe? There is one particular Chinese herb that eliminates shin pain/splints, but I forget the name.

Go and pay for a consult at a physio. Can't diagnose an injury on the internet.

    • @RockWILK
      @RockWILK Před 5 lety +1

stretch and strengthen your calves and lower legs. Work on your feet, (they are REALLY important), your ankles, the strength and stability of your knee joints. Shin splints often occur as a result of tight calves, but can also come about from all kinds of other stuff. Having said that, I bet if you get all of the complimentary body parts around your shins together, and actually, while you're at it, pay attention to the balance that is your entire body, your core, your upper body, your nutrition, your spiritual self, all of it, and you will most probably see a huge improvement now and moving forward. These videos are amazing, by the way, to The Run Experience people, thanks for your knowledge and your generous spirits. You guys are awesomeness. MadLove&RespectFromNYC
