- 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz
In the red corner we have the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz.
Powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine cranking out 277 horsepower and an impressive 311 lb-ft of torque. This gives the Hyundai Santa Cruz a 0-60mph of 6 seconds flat.
It’s got AWD as standard and power to the four wheels comes through an eight-speed dual clutch automatic with a lockable center differential.
Fuel economy shows around 24 miles per gallon in mixed driving. Starting price for the Hyundai Santa Cruz? $25,215. Not bad for what you get!
2022 Honda Ridgeline
In the blue corner we have the largest unibody truck of them all - the 2022 Honda Ridgeline.
Powered by a 3.5-litre naturally-aspirated V6 engine putting out 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. It’s a little slower to 60mph which it completes in 6.2 seconds.
Power is transferred to the wheels via a ZF nine-speed automatic transmission and it’s equipped with Honda’s torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system. In addition it also has a proper limited-slip differential on the rear axle.
It’s thirstier than the Santa Cruz with a combined rating of 21 mpg and it’s also a lot pricier, the basic Sport trim for the Honda Ridgeline starts at $38,115. Quite a gap from the 25k price of the Santa Cruz.

The hyundai looks like a vehicle to have fun in/with, the Honda looks like a dependable workhorse that won't leave you stranded.
The Hyundai does not have Honda’s legendary reputation for quality and reliability. I bought the Ridgeline.
A design battle between the Porsche 918, McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerarri would be interesting
I always find myself preferring one of those designs over the others depending on the day lol. There have been times where I've thought all three were the best looking out of the trio lol. At this moment it time, I find myself liking the design of the Ferrari the most, the P1 the least. Before that, the 918 was my fav, before that, the P1 lol.
Yes
i personally love the lines of the Ferrari so that would be great to see
Guess I’m young, had the Ridgeline when it was new in 2006 had it for 6 years, now own the Santa Cruz and I’m 70.
the ridgeline has been given a slightly more classic look as the Santa Cruz looks much more modern
I agree with you.
I would always choose the Honda - few brands can match Honda for reliability and having owned a couple of different brand cars myself, I can attest to that reputation. Even if you argue that the Hyundai is a lifestyle car and the Honda is a more traditional truck, reliability is still a factor the moment you go off-road.
I beg to differ and Hyundai clear has one of the best if not the best warranty on the market. They stand behind their products and towing 5000lbs says all u need to know about the Santa Cruz.
Its just as tough if NOT TOUGHER and better 4x4 clearance and torque.
And as far as LOOKS!!! WELL.....one clearly says Kaitlyn Jenner owns one and the Santa Cruz is not in the category. The Ridgeline should be hold the banner at the 🌈 parade.
Santa Fe.....is sweet and its the new sheriff in town.
@@billbobaggins801 you cant even fit an Atv in the bed. Let alone doesnt come with a hitch unless you order it after market. Meaning You might aswell buy an SUV with a hitch already available. I have all my camping supplies in my trunk including my Ridgeline bed tent cause multiple people can sleep in the back on a double sized air matress.
You should look at recent consumer reports by JD Power. Hyundai/Kia topped the chart for least number of problems.
@@billbobaggins801 bs, I for one had enough of Hyundai trying to get out fixing something under warranty.
@@voiceauthor2850 wrong. They are still recalling falled engines.
You can get a Santa Cruz with front wheel drive and a regular 8 speed automatic transmission. But it's not the turbocharged engine. To get the specs you mentioned for the Santa Cruz you're going to spend at least $40k, which is more than a base ridgeline with the V6 + 9speed automatic as standard.
Not sure what you chose the rebel for, but the ridge line meets the needs of many people that are looking to do truck stuff. I am a property manager and I want versatility and a usable bed and some towing capacity when I'm pulling a trailer and ergonomics and good on-road performance when I'm driving around the downtown area. There is literally no other truck that would do this as well as the ridge line
Same here. I owned the gen 1 ridgeline since 2008 and have built and remodeled numerous houses to preSent day. I’ve picked up and hauled lots of loads people thought we’re not possible. I can tow a 21’ boat with ease and fit the truck in a standard garage. I gave my old one to a family member in need and just bought a 2023 ridge rtl for myself. Plan to keep it just as long. One thing not mentioned in this video, the in bed trunk. I can fit all my tools in there out of sight and still have the usable backseat which is priceless in a pickup
honestly a santa cruz transformed into an off-road wagon like the subaru outback would be so cool, i'd def buy a santa cruz wagon
It’s basically just the Tucson design as a pickup no? A wagon version of it is just the Tucson suv
@@tobiasnaylor its a tucson with sante fe elements for better payload and towing.
Damn that v6 in the Honda is promising
Hyundai Santa Cruz is more attractive, imo
It'll look so good as it's being towed away...
Save 12K$ at first with the Santa Cruz. Spend well over 12K$ over 10 years of owning it while losing more value at the same time 😂
Your mention the huge difference in starting price between the two but fail to give proper comparison. You described the Santa Cruz with the optional 2.5 turbo (4 cyl) and DCT transmission which starts at $40,000+ but you give a starting price of $25,000 very deceiving. Yet the Honda has as standard equipment a V6 and automatic for starting price of $38,000.
I researched heavily and compared before buying my Ridgeline, so obviously biased option coming… but the pricing and specs thing always gets me when people do these videos because they give the best specs with the lowest prices, if you wanted the Santa Cruz w/ the better engine/ and and tow hitch (comes standard on the Ridgeline) they’re maybe a $200 dollar difference between the two.
great review..thank you
Honda is more mature and rugged for sure but I would have the Hyundai
If you want a new engine at 70k miles go for it
Bed in Santa Cruz way too small.
The Ridgeline started out the same way, more SUV than truck and oddly shaped. Some love it and some hate it. Then Honda changed the shape to look more like a truck... Every Ridgeline made before the redesign was 4 wheel drive and same 6 cylinder engine with towing package standard. The ridgeline has very high quality and trouble free for owners.
My Santa Cruz is what I would call a smaller version of my wife's Ridgeline with a lot of cool electronics but nowhere near as functional. Ridgeline will tow better, has a good bit more room, definitely more storage under the seats and the underbed storage compartment big enough for a couple bodies. The Santa Cruz is loaded with technology. Dependability is uncertain.
I wonder if you're still rescuing kittens, I always thought that was pretty cool
How much will the 2mm thick rear door really affect?
I don't understand why so much drama.
12:37 PLEASE give us a Santa Cruz rear end redesign as like a rugged 3-row Full size suv. That little teaser there is screwing with my mind, I NEED a full redesign now
I had, ford,gm.chrysler ,Chevrolet none can compare to honda precision and reliability. Period. That's why for last 15 years costly repair free ,except brake pads, oil change,I didn't even have to replace a single bulb..
I prefer the Honda… old but gold with 2 proper exhaust pipe
No comparison between a Ridgeline (Japanese Swiss Army Knife) and a Hyundai beach toys car.
What R U smoking ??? Great video, great content 100% would rather see the visuals full frame instead of the picture in picture. Thanks for this post !
I'm a Honda Ridgeline owner (2023 Black Edition) I previously owned a 2013 Ridgeline and I have owned several other makes & models of P/U trucks over the years.
I'm pushing 60, and when the terms "crossover"or "not real trucks" are noted or mentioned regarding these vehicles, I instantly flashback to the day's when a couple of vehicles were made by Chevrolet & Ford, called El Camino and Ranchero.
Essentially, station wagons that were modified by replacing the passenger compartment with a truck bed.
Not everyone liked them, but they were liked enough that they held their own for many years.
In a way, history is repeating itself in regard to this concept, just with some off-road capabilities thrown in which is in my opinion a good strategy.
Just thought I would throw that against the wall, and see if it sticks.
Cheers!
For what the Santa Cruz is and its target market (me), the interior works just fine, thank you. The Ridgeline looks old and tired both inside and out by comparison.
Korean brands are emerging now, but let's not forget that Honda has a long-established reputation in the automotive industry.
The Ridgeline actually has a tent for the bed for camping. The bed can fit an ATV and a double sized air matress. Plus all ypur camping supplies fit right in ypur trunk. good luck with that in the Hyundia. The santa cruz doesnt even come factory with a hitch unless you order it with one. So you might aswell get an SUV. That way your not attempting to fit things in the back that dont fit; pretty much anything bigger then what most SUVs can hold.
I just picked up a 2022 Ridgeline and would do it again without hesitation (Honda Fanboy). Nevertheless the Hyundai is way more stylish and modern looking. I do find the Ridgeline outdated and boring in a desperate need of some mojo. Thanks to the Santa Fe I think this can happen in the near future.
📌 Hey, from design stand point of view, what's your go-to between the Mav n the Rdl
I've been averaging real life MPGs in my '22 Ridgeline 23 around town and up to 31 on the hwy @65mph.
Unusual to hear you pick functionality over design, even if it is just in the interior
The Hyundai would not work for me as the Honda would. This is mainly the truck bed size and cab size. Lastly, I prefer none turbo engines. The Ridgeline is the closes thing to an El Camino. Hauls like a truck and rides like a car.
I bought a 2023 Honda Ridgeline sport which is the base model but it still comes with the natural aspirated V6 and the 9-speed automatic that every Ridgeline comes with and it cost me $36 k and I got 2.9% financing... I'll take that over the Hyundai any day
I'd go with the sel premium because it can tow up to 5,000
I know the maverick isn't in this vid, but I genuinely think it looks better than the Sante Cruz
He already did a comparison with both.
Certainly looks better than the Ridgeline, which screams work truck to me. Probably very practical and dependable, but just a run of the mill truck in the end. the maverick is a work vehicle too, but at least it looks fun and friendly and comes with a splash of color on the inside. Much more personality.
@@danielmcintyre7405 I know.
@@stuchly1 Agreed, the xlt interior works quite well with the area 51 color imo. That's what we're ordering.
Interesting vehicles
I bought the Ridgeline. 2023 RTL-E. Doesn't just beat the Santa Fe, but if you spend most of your time driving real world, it beat every other mid-size truck as well. I've also had great luck with Hondas, so I am a little biased. I still own a 2010 Fit. And I know there are specs, but the RIdgeline will put it down when you need it to...and forget the awesome bed trunk, because the coolest feature is an in-bed speaker system!
The low headlights are great cause they level with the normal sedans. Older sedans n coupes shouldn't get much light intrusion from these cars.
I’m getting the Ridgeline
if its close in price like the ranger super cab , frontier kit cab , tacoma access cab less cab more bed 6.5' box
My Santa Cruz died 6 months in it’s been at the dealership for 2 months now waiting for a transmission and they don’t know when it is coming in they I guess cannot track their parts
Ridgeline for me
So many reviews look at a brand new fresh vehicle but come back in 10 years with 150-200K miles on each and see how they compare.
You are comparing 2 different vehicles in a totally different category; ridgeline is mid size truck and Santa Cruz a new category, small pick up truck
Not exactly new, per se.
The Santa Cruise reminds me of the Gen 2 Ridgeline from a side view. Both vehicles are targeting different buyers.
@@440tomcat I have a 2021 RTL-E and love it. Santa Cruise does nothing for me. I can see snowflakes driving it with those stupid headlights.
@@440tomcat 3rd generation started on 2021. 2nd gen looks a little weird for my taste, I have a 2006 never been to a mechanic yet, I do the little basic maintenance myself. The ridgeline never gave me a single issue up to this day with the exception of the replacing the back sit lift rollers which costed me like $10 on ebay.
That Santa Cruz is way smaller than a Ridgeline. It’s a sedan car with the trunk lid missing that’s all it is.
I owned the 2022 Honda Ridgeline HPD Black. The quality was questionable , entertainment system had long lag time, the HPD plastic wheel flares was coming off slightly in the front, the tonneau cover was leaking, the trans was slipping, my girl friend who knowns absolutely nothing about cars road with me and ask why was my truck doing that lol. I traded it, paid off the loan dealer paid me $37,291.63 for it, so I purchase the Santa Cruz and so far been very happy with it. Don't get me wrong, I like the Ridgeline, I think I had a bad one, this doesn't mean they are all like that. At least Honda holds good return value, would buy another one in the future once they re-design it, because they are quite dated, and boring old design compared to other new trucks of today.
Santa Fe. Without a doubt
Hyundai needs better color choices the Santa Cruz. I prefer the Honda from driving it, interior and exterior; I’ve only drove the Tuscan though which is basically the same thing.
I won't buy either if I wanted a workhorse. For that I'd go ford or some other American. If I'll going lifestyle, it would be the Korean. Let's face it, none of these would probably appeal to the utility market. I never liked the look of the Ridgeline. So I agree with his conclusion
Depends on the kind of work. If you're talking about offroading or heavy towing, sure. But unlike the Taco and Frontier, you can actually lay a 4x8 piece of plywood flat in the bed, you have a heavier bed payload capacity, and you have that awesome trunk storage.
Hyundai have had a nightmare with their current frontend look. It looks like the final design had been amended time and again from the creative department's original design. As though a tonne of people (the executive board?) all had their own amends to be made to the original design. As though the CEO sent a group email to the executive board asking, "Can you all please send me your updates for the Santa Cruz?" And then they all sent them back separately. And the CEO just provided the designer with a list of everyone's changes, without any thought for cohesion between them all.
I reckon. :)
Nice storyline there, but that nonsense wouldn't be necessary if you could accept its just following the current Hyundai parametric design philosophy....only that this truck was designed in California studio.
@@changsangma1915 it matters not where the studio is. Design by committee isn't restricted by geography.
Ridgeline looks so much better to me.
12:24 A genius...
he on day ? it makes 281 hp
You don’t have to worry about reliability when you get 10 years and 100000k powertrain warranty. Hyundai Santa Cruz for the win
Now compare Hyundai with the Ford?
He already has before
@@quinoaaa5994 Thank you!
Some prefer a generic looking truck cause they're boring and have poor tastes so going with generic looks is a safe but boring bet. Nobody is going to give a dam about the Honda Ridgeline when it ages but the Hyundai Santa Cruz is iconic and stylish and has impressive design inside and outside. It will stand out through the years like the El Camino has been.
😂😂😂you tripping
Honda's quality and reputation is way better.
honda desing where?
281 hp
Honda interior badly needs updating but the outside of the Hyundai looks like you have to be a young hipster to drive it.
I’m still buying a Honda every single time. Kia is meh in quality and reliability at best.
You never mentioned the biggest factor I faced. Hyundai took so damn long to make the Santa Cruz I already had my Ridgeline for probably 2 years. I wanted a fully loaded Santa Cruz. I waited and waited (actually leased a Tuscan for 2 years) and finally couldn’t wait anymore. So I got a Ridgeline which is just ok.
You can probably sell the ridgeline and get all of your money back with the way the market is and get a loaded Santa Cruz
What design battle here? Two totally different vehicles. They both have four wheels and a smaller bed and then a larger bed. This discussion is a waste of time....
1:49 😂👌
Ridgeline for the win. The Hyundai is reeeeeeaaaaalllly a lot smaller. The Hyundai bed is unusably small. And, maxed out, the Hundai is only a few thousand dollars less. They Hyundai is for a very niche market of people who BARELY need a bed. The Honda is an actual pick-up truck.... Also, on the interior. The Hyundai is solid black. Combined with it's tiny cabin, it truly feels claustrophobic as a space. Whereas the Honda is not only physically cavernous, the top half of the interior is a lighter shade of gray, which really lightens up and accentuates the openness in the cabin.
I have the Limited model Santa Cruz and in no way is the interior cabin tiny, not sure if yo uhave actually been in one or not?
@@Marcocats I have. I was very interested in the Cruz. When down and sat in one right away when they cam out. Tiny front seats. Tiny back seats. Rediculously tine bed. I hate to suggest this since you've already bought a Cruz, but go sit in a Honda Ridgeline. Then come back and tell me how 'big' the Cruz inteior is.
Those SCs are high AF right now; they're not a good value... better off getting a used Ridgeline RTL-E 2020 and up with 10k - 30k miles.
The ridgeline looks pretty generic to me
I have only owned Hondas so..😅
Hard to trust the review when you pronounce Hyundai wrong....
I stopped at 5 min disappointed in this styling review. People do not buy a truck because of its style.
Subaru did this better 20 years ago in the baja lol
I've owned both, Honda and Hyundai, and I will never own another Hyundai. It was a piece of crap. Unreliable, it had no power, the electronics were bad (only warrantied for one year). Ridgeline is what I'm looking at buying in the future.
Le santa Cruz en hors route les biellettes courbent pas fort.
The Ridgeline is way better design. The Other one looks like an El Camino knock off . Are you kidding the Honda is much nicer by far
Drive a Santa Cruz at night before you buy! Those headlights are terrible and convinced me to not buy one.
You need the LED lights on the higher end models 😂😊
I have a 2024 Santa Cruz SEL. They come with the factory LED headlights. Nice bright and light up the road perfectly.@@sacballa_kills_em_wit_facts
Korea can't compete with Japan,newer
I think the Hyundai is meant for people below the 5’5” height tbh .
The Hyundai reliability is poor . Honda for win !
Hyundai is a piece of junk! ...Scotty Kilmer.
