  • The 2022 Ford Maverick ($39,230 CAD as specced, ~$32,920 USD), and the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz ($45,129 CAD as specced, ~$40,945 USD) are the newest unibody trucks / open bed SUV’s to hit the market. By combining SUV comfort and ride with the versatility of an open truck bed, these two new vehicles attempt to offer the best of both worlds. Will they live up to the task? And how do they each work towards this goal while maintaining affordability? Thomas and James take a deeper look at how the Ford Maverick and the Hyundai Santa Cruz compare. Which will they prefer? Well they aren't trucks to start with. Unibody is crossover and car design.
      Second, they aren't small. Full size trucks were this size not that long ago. A real compact truck is the ranger and Chevy S10 from the 80s. Or the Mazda b2200. These are simply suvs with the body changed in the back.
      Like a Ridgeline. That's a pilot with a different rear body.
      Put an actual frame in it like a Tacoma and then you have a truck.

I have the 2023 2.5 Turbo Limited fully loaded & absolutely love it. I’m sure I’d love a Maverick too but I can’t relay how much fun the Santa Cruz is. I feel like its a NO brainer.. the Ford actually looks like a truck, the interior looks like the bronco "love the bronze metal accents", it gets 8mp better!! that's like 24 percent better then the Hyundai, and its substantially cheaper. just in the few months this has been out I've seen them all over the place and they look great in real life.. it even has me considering buying one.. on the other hand the Hyundai's exterior styling is terrible.. that design will age so poorly making the resale value even worse.. the interior looks cheap and spaceship like. Obviously they did not take a hint from the Honda ridgeline that had that weird slopping piece that made the truck bed look terrible.. and the newest version of it has a square bed.. and you guys are saying that they ride the same and have similar power and functionality... I would be surprised if the ford doesn't outsell the Hyundai 5 to 1 in Canada and the US.... would bet my life on it

    • @asymsolutions
      @asymsolutions Před 2 lety +8

      Except they are the EXACT opposite of the ranger and S-10. They are 100% baja, which was a worse vehicle than the legacy based outback that the last generation was based on.
      Wrong wheel drive for a decent payload, a pathetic size bed for the segement (even the VW rabbit based truck did that better) and their so-called 1000lbs payload is not true.
      We had one (maverick) from an officer who wanted a truck that is not a truck and already got rid of it for a ridgeline the first time he needed to do some home projects. Ironically he was hoping for a ranger like his old one but comfier, we left our clapped out 98 single cab next to his and the obviously sacrifice in utility was naked to the bare eye.
      These things are a scam and at this point you'd have a better time making use out of their crossover brethren than these because of the super lack of bed. I could forgive that if they went folding rear ala chevy avalanche but no. The fact that you can't even fit a proper dresser or average loveseat in the bed without dropping the tailgate is pathetic. It's even worse when midsize short bed guys who can just accomplish that at least can justify it in the offroad capabilities their short wheelbase combined with a ladder on frame's truck ride height gives them.
      Just get a Bronco Sport or Santa Fe instead. You'll have the increased floor space over the "truck" versions, and the ability to have reclining rear sears AND protected cargo in inclement weather.

    Great review. My Ford 150 cured me of Ford due to early, beyond inconvenient component failure. If you can call the first, the freaking transmission, a mere component. At four years! Followed by the alternator. The transmission went out on a day I was injured and hospital bound, and the second stranded me on a long trip. I had driven a cheap little Mazda pickup for 12 years before that and had NO component failure. And yet, to be fair, once I got all the substandard failed components replaced on the Ford, nothing else went bad. I kept the F150 for 16 years! But no, I never forgave Ford. And just like now, back when I bought it people were saying "No worries, Detroit fixed the quality issues." Nope. Profit maximization and hence cheapness are bred in the bone at Detroit.

    I think the Maverick is more of a classless, utilitarian vehicle that will age and perform better in the long run than the more trendier styled Santa Cruz. As a farmer, a mountain biker, and father of three little ones I see this as a great option for a replacement commuter car that is highly functional. I think it falls down a bit in regards to value as you price it up in the higher trims but as a base or XL trim, specifically in the hybrid, you have a super flexible, efficient vehicle that can get in the 40mpg range for my wife’s 45 minute one way daily commute yet still bring home a load of feed from the feed store, OR haul kids around. It’s refreshing to me as a guy who likes more utilitarian vehicles, Defenders, old Land Cruisers, old pickups... he’ll we have a couple VW Things.... but here we have a perfectly modern, comfortable car, that can haul 5 people, haul gear or supplies, it’s not fancy, but nice and it’s efficient and cheap. In the XL or XLT trim you are looking at 21k to maybe 25k nicely specced. That’s a damn renaissance and I think the reason why so many people are stoked about this thing. Not the higher trims, give me a base XL with steel rims, a set of snow tires for our northern Michigan winters and you have the winner of the useful versus cost contest. Love it. Yeah maybe the awd turbo setup is faster and probably more fun, maybe as a sport truck or something but for most people the hybrid is going to be pretty compelling... especially as we see the world transitioning over towards electric cars and with the uncertainty of gas prices going forward... a hybrid is a pretty safe bet on operating costs and I would guess resale as well 5-10 years from now. Would be curious to see you guys review a base from the viewpoint of cheap, commuter transportation revolution ... like a modern Model A in a sense.

    There are just as many Maverick fans as there are Santa Cruz fans. It really does come to personal taste between these two vehicles. I finally opted for the Santa Cruz and the only real reason was the extra warranty. For me it is just peace of mind knowing I won’t have to put any extra money into the SC except for fuel, tires and batteries for the next five years. Small reasons I opted for the SC were the included bed liner and tonneau cover. Both vehicles drove the same, they handled the same etc. It really just comes down to personal taste and no matter what one you choose you can’t go wrong with your decision.

My buddy was shocked that I took it out and "damaged" it. My response..."why drop big 4x4 truck money if you are not going to treat it like a big 4x4"...he couldn't understand that I bought it to use it, not to have a parking lot queen that never got dirty. I love the digital drive modes on modern cars. My 2006 manual transmission/manual transfer case Silverado has drive modes too. There is 2H, N, 4L, 4H modes....then 5 forward and 1 reverse gear on top of that. "Drive modes" are a placebo for the engagement that all of the old school analog levers provide.
    Beyond traction control and abs, you're at small improvements with drive modes that are almost never needed. Get rid of the settings/knobs/buttons and save some money. Hauling air doesn't require a special drive mode.
