  • The Hyundai Santa Cruz enters the market once owned by the Honda Ridgeline - a CUV based small pickup - and brings its own character. Does this truck-let / Ute / Experiment make sense? We take it on a road and muddy test drive to discuss and disagree on what's right, what's not working, and who would like the Santa Cruz. Join us for a Test Drive.

    • @ChrisPollard
      @ChrisPollard Před 2 lety +4

      Both good 'small' trucks. The Maverick excels at appealing to people who want a truck. This one is more for people who really want an SUV that can do some occasional truck duty - and enjoy having people randomly stopping them to talk about it. Oh man, you get used to that quick in the Santa Cruz. Once had a guy wait for me at the doors to the grocery store to ask about it. Had a guy in a Wrangler cross a parking lot to check it out. My wife had a woman knock on her window to ask about it while she waited for me to come out of the store a few weeks ago too. We've seen people just about give themselves whiplash spinning their heads to get a look. The Hyundai draws attention. The Maverick is like driving incognito. Blends in, nobody will notice it for the most part. Capability-wise, they're really very similar. The Maverick may max out at 4k towing - but Ford DOES at least equip it with a trailer brake controller for the job. Hyundai still hasn't officially released a 7-pin harness for the Cruz (although some have found the wiring kit for the Telluride is a direct fit).
      If you're thinking about either, it would be a very good idea to check them both out. They are VERY different in pretty much everything but vehicle segment. Especially the interiors/exteriors.

    Thoughts from a real truck owner who wants one of these:
    1- you’re right; this accomplishes 90% of non fleet/pro/work truck needs
    2- this seems more appropriate than the larger, softer, less fun ridgeline
    3- smaller and more functional always wins in the daily category
    4- driving a truck is not always fun. Riding up high is fun, driving experiences in trucks is not super high - unless doing off-road activities.
    Honestly, the ridgeline should have been a real midsized truck with a t-case OR a smaller truck like this size as an AWD. No matter how I tried to justify buying that truck I knew I’d miss out on things I need and I was correct.

      I just bought a limited instead of the lariat, I built one out and the difference was 3,100.00 so I went with my gut, much better warranty, fit and finish way better, robust suspension, very well thought out engine bay, the mav doesn't even have the hood insulation or an engine cover, kind of unfinished if you ask me. Has an excellent ride, and is FAST no issues with the dual clutch, shifts great. First tank averaged 29.7 mpg around town, and not driving like a Prius, first fill up cost 34.50.. not too shabby. Overall I'm glad I went with the SC, some complain because of the small bed well if I need more bed I'll just hook up to my utility trailer like I did with my previous colorado z71. The tech and safety features blow the mav out of the water and the bose system is great. And if you can find a dealer that's not marking them up and selling at msrp(I had to drive 400 miles to find one) I recommend if you can afford it go for the limited it has all the bells and whistles.

And the more popular hybrid version is just now arriving at dealership, so it'll get worse for Hyundai. Ford actually stopped taking orders for the hybrid till summer of next year because it couldn't keep up with orders. Considering there's only 2 in this segment, the Santa Cruz is dead last.

    I ended up buying the 2022 Premium. It gets double the gas mileage of the truck that I owned. It is comfortable. It is road worthy in bad conditions. It has some utility. I like the zippy nature of the turbo along with the economy. It's a great combo. I average 24 mpg. Some highway and town driving in smart mode. I don't like attention. But. It turns heads. The bad thing is that the bigger trucks want to floor it past me. So do other vehicles that have some quickness. I don't pay any attention to it. Because I did not purchase it to race around. It gets very good mileage and has the power and quickness when needed.

  • @ChrisPollard
    @ChrisPollard Před 2 lety +2

    On the surface, the cube display seems kind of stupid. Admittedly, that's where I started too. But after about a week of ownership I switched to it and never went back. Some of that came down to it's one of the darkest displays available for night driving. I wish the screens got several levels DARKER at night. I like my dash dim to the point of just visible at night. This isn't it.
    But man, I LOVE this little truck!! It's exactly what I wanted - an SUV for my daily 200km commute that's sporty and comfortable and trucky enough to haul some garbage to the dump, a new grill home from the store, or load up the kayak and fishing gear for some weekend fun.
    And having owned it for just over 3 months now, I still a) love getting behind the wheel every single day and b) STILL find myself just stopping to stare at it several times a week. It looks SO good. Does it have its quirks that annoy me at times? Yes. I get the idea behind auto/rain sensing wipers - but I hate them. I would much rather have simple time-based intervals. Is it flat out stupid that if the radar gets blocked by mud/snow/road grime that you COMPLETELY lose access to cruise control? Y'damn skippy!! Especially since in their other products you can simply turn the adaptive stuff off and have normal NON-adaptive cruise. It's missing from the Santa Cruz, and I don't like that. Did they miss a fantastic opportunity for ultra-cool taillights by not making the LED arrows into sequential turn signals - while using incandescent bulbs for turn/brake lights? (When every other bulb on the top trim is LED) Absolutely! And darn it all if I don't want regular old "outdated" knobs and buttons for my HVAC controls. I'm crazy like that. I also have quibbles about the phone storage space in front of the shifter/cup holders, like there's no wireless Android/Apple, so you have to plug in - but that's also the trim with the wireless charging pad, which you don't need if you're connected by USB! And the space in front of the shifter, where the Qi pad isn't, is too small for modern phones to fit properly. Little things that annoy me, but don't take away from my overwhelming love of this little trucklet.
    If it's the spirit of the Brat, the Baja (was a huge fan of that one), the Ranchero, the El Camino, the Holden, or even the Aussie Falcon ute ... I'm good with that. I loved each and every one of them!

      @@1976axerhand So far I have zero complaints about anything. The mileage is at 6,355. I have noticed a very slight “shudder” in the transmission a few different times (as other people had mentioned in a couple of the other reviews I had watched), but it seemed to be reflective of a slight but obvious “indecision in acceleration” (not sure how else to word it). An example would be when sitting behind someone at a red light, the light changes to green, I release pressure from the brake and just barely begin to slightly apply pressure to the gas, only to then decrease the pressure on the gas because the person in front of me has not responded to the light changing as quickly as I did. The perceived “shudder” is so slight that you almost wouldn’t notice it and not at all frequent. It’s negligible and certainly not something I’d consider to be an issue.

If you have a vehicle that serves your needs 90 percent of the time, then you still need something else ten percent of the time. What are you suppose to do? Rent a full size every time you need it. I like this “Ute.” I just think that people need to realize that truck people, especially those that buy full size trucks, have decided that the price premium for a full size truck is worth it, in order to get that last ten percent of capability.

      The problem with a 10% solution is your driving a big, lumbering, hulk of a thing 90% of the time. Life is too short for that kind of compromise... I want to drive something fun. Most people I know got a full size trucks for one thing: COMFORT. They like riding high on big comfy leather seats. I believe that is what reviewers are talking about. People who actually use trucks for truck stuff tend to drive older trucks that are rough around the edges. Who is buying a $70k Denali for hauling construction supplies and risky scratching that baby up?

    This is what I wish Hyundai would do, please tell your engineer friend who designed this! As a person who likes riding with the windows down, I really wish they would put small sliding windows on all of the SC trim levels. Even if the SE’s were manually sliding and the higher trim packages were automatic like they are. I’ve just noticed with all of the windows down you can feel MAJOR drag and would be nice to have that window!

    I have a base SE model with AWD on the way, can you elaborate on the statement to not get the base engine vs. Turbo? I don't need to tow more than 2500-3000 and I don't care for the "luxury" features present in higher models. I will admit the lower gears felt choppy in test driving a SEL FWD. That lack is missing my price point, even though for me it will be like driving a spaceship compared to the Yaris.

    Question for Paul: in car design, what's happened to the rocker panel? Why is there no visible part line on the bottom of the door? I kind of get it for clean designs where you want to minimize part lines, but more and more I see plastic cladding on the bottom of the door where the rocker panel would otherwise be. It doesn't make the door opening into the car any bigger to delete the rocker panel, and it strikes me that it increases the chances some body damage will require replacing the entire door. What's wrong with stopping the door before the bottom of the side of the car? What's wrong with visible rocker panels?

    • @JDubbs07
      @JDubbs07 Před 2 lety +4

      In the case of SUVs, you frequently see this kind of design because it keeps occupants legs clean from any water/mud/etc when entering and exiting the vehicle. Cars still have a rocker panel.

And i have owned Hyundai/KIA vehicles, among other brands, and have always found the interface to be a breeze compared to others.

      Listen to the reason for Todd's displeasure here. And it's been stated in other reviews as well. Hyundai requires a multistep process, and a cable, to connect a phone for the first time (an uncommon thing), and they have default background soundscapes they want to play through the audio system.
      The interface itself is well done - but these annoyances remain and pull it down in initial usability. After getting through those steps (something an owner would do once and never again, as mentioned here and elsewhere) there aren't any issues.
      Thanks for watching!
