    Mix ALL-SET per the directions, this is SUPER important to get the right consistency and pot life for the mortar. We used 6-1/2 quarts of water for one bag of mortar. And mixed the mortar for 5 minutes, allowed it to slake for 10 minutes, and mixed it for another 3 minutes after slaking.
    It helps to place a plumb line on the drywall to indicate where the KERDI membrane should stop. Take a damp sponge and wipe down the drywall to remove any dust and to prevent the thin-set mortar from setting up too quickly. Then use a KERDI trowel to work the mortar into the drywall surface. Directionally trowel ALL-SET on the wall to help remove air gaps and collapse all the ridges in the mortar.
    Compress KERDI membrane into the walls, going from the ceiling to the floor. Remove air gaps and flatten KERDI using either the KERDI trowel or 6 inch drywall knife. Overlap all KERDI membrane by 2 inches.

    My bathroom is a 5’ x 8’, but I’ll only extend the Kerdi out about 28”. And the original wall is a wooden wall covered by Sheetrock .
    We will open the wall to update the plumbing and reinstall wood and Sheetrock. And the wall has some wallpaper that needs to be preserved

    I'm in the process of redoing one of my bathrooms and have all the Kerdi membrane up and it's pretty secure to the drywall. However, I haven't been able to tile yet, so I've had to use the shower in this current state. I've noticed that the Kerdi membrane is always wet to the touch like it's absorbing water and I can see a definite color change. I also have one of the niches and it also gets darker as if the water is being absorbed as well. I also have noticed capillary action where I have seams covered with Kerdi band. I used unmodified thinset, applied Kerdi band in the corners, bottom of the tub surround, and maintained the required overlap. I'm worried that something went wrong or am I just being paranoid? Since, I planned on starting the tile in the next few days.

Thought I saw you installing it somewhere without either one. 2) Attaching tile to Kerdi board after the prep - do I use the same concept as installing tile to cement board in terms of trowel, thinset consistency, coverage etc? Of course with the unmodified thinset.

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  Před 5 lety +3

      Kerdi needs to be applied over drywall or cement board. Kerdi-Board is attached directly to wood or metals studs that are 16" on-center. Tile can be set directly to Kerdi or Kerdi-Board using unmodified thin-set mortar or Schluter's ALL-SET mortar, the latter is very good.

    Is there a reason why you couldn't install the Kerdi membrane horizontally from the bottom up so that your overlaps are always shedding the water on top of the piece below? I have heard of some concerns that although the Kerdi is waterproof the thin-set mortar is not and in some instances the thin-set can wick water to somewhere you don't want it. Just seems like horizontal overlaps would be potentially better.

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  Před 5 lety +1

      Great question, it sounds like just a thin-set problem behind the Kerdi. In that case, you could grind down the back of the tile to let it sit flat against the wall. The Montolit STL diamond cup wheel is fantastic, it's not cheap but well worth the money if you have several spots like that. Here's a tutorial we did on that blade that shows how it works
