  • This video shares Part 3 of how to do a Schluter Shower installation; we discuss what size trowel to use, how to set the pan in mortar, and how to waterproof both the pan and curb.

    -Schluter Corner Bench (16" x 16" x 20") -- amzn.to/2MXpbEM
    -KERDI Trowel -- amzn.to/2wW152j
In this shower we used Schluter's ALL-SET mortar to adhere the pan to the 3/4" plywood using a 1/4" x 3/8" square notch trowel. All mortar ridges should face the same direction. Set the pan in the mortar, walk on it to compress the mortar, and check the coverage by lifting it up.
Apply mortar to the edge of the pan and the first 6 inches beyond the pan where the curb will rest. Set the curb in the mortar and check that it's level, especially if using glass shower doors which need the curb level.
We actually forgot to install our corner bench and had to do that after setting the pan. But the bottom of the bench has to rest on the plywood. Waterproof the bench using two outside corners and one inside corner, then overlap these with Kerdi-Band.
Apply ALL-SET around the shower drain and glue it to the P-Trap below the shower pan. In our prior video we discuss how to dry fit the drain pipe and cut the ABS to size.
Cut Kerdi membrane to the size of the pan and apply mortar to the top of the Schluter shower pan, fill in all the waffles with the flat side of the trowel. Then embed the Kerdi membrane to the top of the pan, and scribe cut it against the bench. Get Kerdi as tight as possible to the wall but don't stress over it being exact. This intersection will be waterproofed using Kerdi-Band, which will overlap the wall and shower pan.

Paying attention to the important bits like thin-set type, consistency, band overlap etc. It doesn’t have to look pretty at this stage it just has to work. You have shown us just that. Thank you. You say you're using Schluter All-Set Modified thin-set to install the membrane, but the formal Kerdi instructions say to use Unmodified for that. Why are you using the wrong thin-set? Your blog post on Schluter Thin-set also states that All-Set can be used for over and under application when Schluter formal installation instructions specifically only call out using Modified for the underside of Ditra application with certain sub-floors. According to Schluter all membrane installation should be done with their Set Unmodified Thin-set. What gives with the conflicting info?

    • @SP-tu7od
      @SP-tu7od Před 4 lety

also, you still have to apply corners, and the kerdi is thicker than kerdi ban, so you can but you would have more buildup.

I love how he stomped the Kerdi pan down into the thin set - then lifted it up - cracked it - and put back down...???

no offense, but try working a little cleaner with the mud. Hold one dry knife in the corner as you pull away the mud. The cleaner you work the less build up you will have.

When I am doing washrooms,my hands are always DRY and Split open, any little cut turns into a big dry gash.I used to build bridges and worked with concrete,I thought my hands were bad then but nothing like when I am doing these showers,it just dries the skin so bad.I hate working with gloves,so it's all on me.

its impossible to install tile without getting messy, unless you take 4 times as long. Its part of the job. Having said that the finished tile should not be messy, but the prep usually is very messy, and shitty looking. Just the way it is, if you can do better then lets see it lol.

Suntorn Pogasic it absolutely is not impossible to tile and not get messy. These types of tilers are they type who end up getting thinset on everything around the house. My family and I tile floors and showers and I promise you, being a clean and a fast installer is not difficult.

@@joseoviedo1644 i install tile for a living also for 20 years, i am the cleanest tile layer around. still get mud on shit, just clean it up with a wet rag or sponge. But your commenting about messy prep work in a shower using kerdi system. 1) it doesnt need to be clean looking its getting covered by tile. 2) because you are installing alot of layers on top of orange with grey mud, its gonna look messy no matter what.

@@joseoviedo1644 although you are correct this guy is a little messy, but like i said it doesnt matter, when you are installing kerdi shower it its race with time. it doesnt matter what it looks like (although my work is much cleaner). Just cutting the guy a break cuz I thought you were busting his balls a little harder then necessary. It drives me crazy when people don't clean the finished tile, when i lay tile its so clean i don't even have to scrape joints before grouting. But some do and everyone is different. Not everyone is a born artist.

the kerdi fix in the corners was absolutely pointless. you put the kerdi fix on top of kerdi corners that already were doing the job.

This guy is a disaster. Keep a sponge near by, a margin trowel to wipe up excess thinset. Keep your product nice. If someone doesn’t care about cleanliness definitely not going to pay attention to details
