Thanks for this playthrough. This clarified a few things for me.
Nice. I'm glad the playthrough was helpful. Thanks for checking it out!
This was cool. Thank you.
Thank you for watching and commenting. Really appreciate it.
I'm still waiting for my copy to show up. I'm very excited to give it a try. Thanks for the playthrough.
You are welcome Peter. I hope you enjoy the game when it arrives. Thanks for checking out my vid!
I was hoping to hear the original Dark Trower victory music when you won...they missed a good opportunity there...Great playthrough! I got my copy a few days ago and spent last night punching out the game pieces and putting the cards into the custom RDT card sleeves
Thanks farpoint! I never played the original so I don't know how much this version keeps from the old one. I know there is a setting -- 8-bit mode or something like that -- which adds certain sound effects or lighting effects. Not sure. Sorry, I'm not very knowledgeable on this front. But I hope you enjoy the game! I recommend rechargeable batteries.
8 bit mode IS the old sounds from the original.
Ah, that's fun! I'll have to turn that on next time. Thanks Michael.
This has been a very helpful play through. Thanks for doing it.
One observation. At 8:10 - I think that “remove a skull at the start of your turn” was only for one’s in your home kingdom? Just want to make sure I didn’t miss something
-oh I see you corrected it!
I'm so glad you find the video helpful! Thank you for checking out the channel!
Just finished my first set up. Watched this playthrough to get a handle on it. I will now turn on The Dark Tower.
Great Damon. Good luck! Win or lose I hope you have fun! Thanks for watching!
@@TotallyTabled first game, Solo Gritty with guild expansion and minis. The foe minis look great!
Oh, fancy. 🙂 Should be pretty tough with the expansion I hear. Let us know your thoughts afterwards. I'm curious.
Thanks for the playthrough. I received my game - the neoprene map over this last weekend. Where did you get the containers that are holding your counters? They look very handy.
Thanks for watching Jeff. I got those on the Board Game Geek store but I believe generic versions are available on Amazon. Hope you enjoy the game!
Great playthrough! Thanks for doing this.
Wow, jPlay! I love your videos. I've been watching them for at least 5 years. Thanks so much for checking out my channel!
@@TotallyTabled Now I am really flattered… Thanks so much but this was the first video of „The Dark Tower“ that actually „sold“ me the game!
Nice. It is a fun game with a ton of potential and I'm excited to see where it goes. I'm not sure the game lives up to it's epic price tag for what is essentially a glorified cube tower, but "value" is such a subjective thing. I bet most people will be thrilled with it.
Thanks for the gameplay! I want the game but sadly i didn't kickstartered it (didn't decided at that moment).
So i'll probably buy it in retail in the future. What's the weight of the box? (For shipping rate purposes).
That's a good question. Not sure, it is a big box but not as heavy as you might think. Sorry, I don't have a scale. Thanks for watching my video!
They will make a reprint in july this year on kickstarter...
“In your current kingdom” - is that the land your mini/character is in, or the land on the map that faces you as a player?
"In your current kingdom" is where you are at that moment. "In your home kingdom" is the kingdom facing you. Thanks for watching!
Don't forget if you spend a spririt before you move, you double your movement for that turns. You seem to have missed a few opportunities there..... :-)
I often didn't think of that, you are right. Seems like a waste of spirit but I bet you are right about missed opportunities. Thanks for watching Michel!
Great vid. But...why did you bother completing the arsonists in the marketplace quest? You had 3 of the 4 needed treasures and the 4th was IN the marketplace. You could have easily let that one fail and just grabbed that final treasure.
Because I'm a big damn hero, Trent! 😃No, you are right. It wasn't necessary. I just enjoy completing quests. Thanks for watching!
You kicked this ones butt huh? Maybe theyll add Sam or Leopold as adversaries in a future expansion to make it harder.
I read some of the expansion stuff wont likely be available retail so FOMOed into buying an all in pledge from a seller. Hopefully gritty mode adds some more challenge.
I'm going to release a video addressing whether gritty mode adds enough of a challenge, since this seems to be a major concern for several people. So stay tuned. I don't have the expansion, so I can't speak to that. Thanks for watching!
@@TotallyTabled From what I see the only gameplay stuff in the KS expansions is some additional heros you can be. The rest is just cosmetics of enemy minis and token upgrades.
Upgraded tokens would be nice. The cardboard ones are small and fiddly. I'm hoping they focus on expanding the app, adding content that way rather than more physical components.
@@TotallyTabled the tokens were what pulled me in. The minis will probably just stay in the box or get sold off.
If the app kept track of location they could do alot more with mob movement. That could spice things up a bunch. It could also be more nefarious when spitting out skulls and events. Hopefully they explore some new stuff there.
Yeah, exactly. Even something as simple as saying, "Place falling skulls on the Citadel" or "on the building with the most skulls" would do a lot to add tension. For foes say "move toward closest hero or building, etc." I think a lot could be done without the app having to track anything. I really hope they explore this stuff because I think the potential for greatness is in this box.
You really lucked out. Most people aren't so lucky and get absolutely wrecked by Ashstrider.
🤔 I'm both surprised and intrigued to hear you say that. I'm finding the game very easy. In five plays I've not really come close to losing. In what ways was I lucky specifically and how do people get wrecked? Can't you retreat and keep trying? I'd love to hear more. Also, thanks for watching my video!
@@TotallyTabled Maybe the game is much easier in Solo mode. Those who I have talked to have only played co-op and will get events that end up removing entire buildings or the adversary moves and destroys a building or get cards like "place 9 skulls in your kingdom". It also may be due to their play style as they may try and spread the skulls over each building instead of placing a number of them on a single building as Justin Jacobson suggests. They Scion also has the virtue to mitigate 6 warrior losses on each battle card. I don't believe the others have a similar virtue. I guess it really depends on if you are able to stay on top of keeping the areas relatively clean. The Return to Dark Tower Facebook group is where most of these reports are coming from. Loved your play through. I'd love to see a co-op or competitive play through.
Yep, I can't speak to co-op and I have no interest in the competitive mode at all. In solo, I've defeated Ashstrider three times (I had to film the playthrough twice due to tech issues) and never struggled. I played a gritty game with the Spymaster and same thing. Maybe co-op is balanced better but solo is easy and luck has little to do with it. Thanks again!
@@TotallyTabled I played this past weekend with the Warlord. What surprised me most about your play through was how many times you got 'No Events'. I didn't get that once. So, in a way, that seemed lucky.
I played multiple times and the results were exactly the same. Luck is not why the solo is easy. Plus, "no events" is bad design. Something interesting should always happen. Thanks for watching Condemic!
oh no... as you were cursed(07:54)... you forgot your Armor... and one of your Virtues?
I think I understand your question. My understanding is my armor and virtue only apply to battles and I don't think they would apply to an event. I might be wrong however. Thanks for watching Leeroy!
That seemed way too easy. I'm hoping that gritty mode and the Alliances expansion really ramp up the challenge level.
That was the recommended first scenario and that character was ideal, but yes, gritty will be required outside of family play. Thanks for watching!
It’s also one of the better selling points of having an app. A re-balance, or even added difficulty levels of varying degrees are just an update away.
Question... can you save games or do you have to complete the game. What happens to the skulls in the tower...
There isn't a system to save a game midway through as far as I know. I think the app will let you pause and come back later. That is a good question, though. The skulls are just inside the tower behind removeable doors. At the end of the game you have to open all the doors to take them out. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Thanks for watching Rod!
My daughter and I started a game we couldn’t finish, so we exited the app and turned off the tower ( just be careful lifting the tower to shut it off so you don’t shift skulls around or cause them to fall out). The next day we went back into the app and turned on the tower. The app connected to the tower and we were right where we left off. I read somewhere that your progress is saved every time you drop a skull.
Awesome. That is great info. Thanks Crit Happens!
I read about this, too... you can make a break and play later time the game to the end...
I thought the Haggle die could only be used if you reinforced at a Bazaar? It seems you are using it in any building that you are reinforcing at. I don't have my game yet and the prototype RB on the KS page doesn't have the rules for the Haggle die in it. This might make a difference as you were getting a lot of free stuff throughout the game.
Rulebooks says "when you reinforce" and does not specify a building. Could be a mistake, but I'm definitely following the rulebook. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching my video!
@@TotallyTabled Someone confirmed on the discord channel that you can use the Haggle die during any Reinforce action. That somehow doesn't seem right.
@@chriscassaday3715 Thematically you might be right. But it is risky. 1/3 of the sides cancels your reinforce action altogether, which is punishing, so rolling it is a bit of a desperation move (unless you have the card I had).
Couldn't see very well but I think on one turn you bought a treasure then rolled the haggle die which landed on the refuse side that would have prevented you from buying that treasure
@@marvart4536 Definitely possible I made a mistake. At one point I received a card that let me roll the haggle die and ignore the refuse side, so I might have done that. Not sure. Do you remember the timestamp?
I just backed the second printing. Looks like it uses about 30% of the battery each game?
Major battery hog for sure. Invest in rechargeables. Thanks domziphone!
@@TotallyTabled if it runs out of batteries in the middle of the game can you change them and keep going?
I've read that is how it works, but I've never tested it myself. Everything has worked flawlessly when I've played.
