- Using AI-powered smart glasses can improve personal independence for visually impaired people, according to one blind user of the technology.
Stuart Beveridge, who is visually impaired and has been blind since birth, relies on his guide dog around the clock.
But since 2020, he has been using smart glasses with software which can take a photo and describe his surroundings. It can also connect him with loved ones who can access his video vision.
“I’m actually doing a lot more on my own,” Mr Beveridge said.

This is great technology. Years ago, I worked as a caregiver for an elderly blind man who had great hearing. He died during the pandemic. I'm sure he would have wanted to try this technology had he lived longer.

Here is an argument from economics: any tool that increases the independence of visually impaired people increases their ability to be economically productive and reduces the social costs of carign for or otherwise helping them. This is a compelling reason why the government should use tax-payer funds to provide such tools for free. The government should pay prices for such tools that give such producers a fair reward for their wonderful innovations but do not give them a blank cheque to charge any price they like.

This is absolutely fantastic great work.
I can understand the immense potential of possibilities this will have from the camera helping the persons family see everything around the house to the daily walk and capacity to record in an instant without an offender even ever knowing they are being recorded. Even the hand movements to the glasses could be interpreted to just be a nervous reaction rather than distraction or recording. I can’t wait to see this being used and the future progress in this particular technology.
I think war is outdated history has proven many times there’s nothing ever so fruitful than progressing human development.
Why can’t we all work together in harmonious joyful efforts like this to further our existence rather endeavour to destroy our existence. 🤔🙏🏼

The beauty of science.
I was looking for information on smart devices to assist a visually impaired person. Unfortunately this audio track is presented in English with a Scottish accent. That makes it pretty much inaccessible to most people who are not native English speakers. Perhaps it would be an idea to publish this useful video using someone else to speak the audio track?

These technologies can't make difference unless they are affordable.
Everything in these glasses you can get for free if you have an iphone. There are apps that do all this. Only difference you can't wear it on your face, but apart from that it's the same. Obviously iphone's aren't cheap either, but they do a ton of other useful stuff too.
I had an idea the other day about creating a walking stick with laser range filters on it for blind people in braille could even shoot out 5 beams at once and display the different distances to all five fingers at once
That's why AI is changing our lives right now. Let's hope more helpful advances will come up in the short term.

@@BeautifulPeopleBTFLPPL maybe but I don't think so. Permanent tattoos are against the tenents of all major religions. A temp tattoo wouldent work. The skin sheds itself constantly especially when your younger ie the target audience so it would have to be injected. You can't inject gold Grafene and other components necessary for an e tattoo into the human body without triggering an immune response Anyone that showers regularly would end up washing off anything temp

I'm waiting for them to put microchips for GPS in them. And a light that emits when they are off so we can more easily find them.
These glasses are great, but I foresee there being one major drawback, which is the high level of dependance that this device brings. For example, if someone needs to view an object from a distance or solve for an issue within their own home, they'll need to contact a live support agent, making their ability to rectify any issue contingent upon said agent providing visual guidance, and instead of the user independently fixing the issue themselves. Ironically, while this device may be extremely convenient, it does not solve the underlining issue, which is enabling the user to enhance their visual acuity, thereby making them more independent in the context that they don't need to rely on anyone to visually navigate the world around them. This is of course assuming those who wear such a device have some vision. If however, these individuals are completely blind, then this device would prove to be most helpful.
I have retinopathy; I volunteer to try them.
I think the EU ban for developing AI technology can impact this type of this awesome development. The future is AI

It is not yet available in India yet my friend, but in a few years smart glasses will be available soon and maybe one of us will be able to make apps that help blind people see

Hardware is good enough and small enough that the real limitation is software which is awesome. I could totally see in the future where the blind could have tech to actually make them “see” better than us normies.
I have been congratulated on my superior abilities to really look at things and see details quicker and easier than others because I learned to compensate for my failing vision by learning to be more observant. Technology might actually take this quality away.
Yup but look to the brain interface chips instead. Theyre well into working stage now. We've had 128input brain to pc interfaces since the 90's (external sensors), but the new tech is amazing.
They can record thoughts, read data from the optical nerves, apply data to the optical nerves, record images from dreams (that was about 5-10years ago already). The u.s. a few years ago connected a team of soldiers together. They shared emotional/reactionary responses. So if one saw something dangerous and the body reacts, the others all get fed some stimulus so they could react instantly as one soldier almost. And theres that guy who recently got his eyeballs connected to his brain again using a chip and wifi to bypass the non functioning nerves. Very basic vision but he got his sight back.
Why use a.i. Glasses that are more costly to build?
The chips are easily implanted or can be used externally. If you go full tech power im sure they could be msde small enough to be injected even.
Linking directly to brain function is the way forward, ultra low cost.
I see some university released a controller system that uses brainwaves recently...but then i saw that already in the 90's. I think you can still buy the 64command version, hell it was sold as a game controller and disability aid. The university level one a few years before designed for deisabled people to use computers was even more advanced, it just lacked the tidy interface, which we now have various options for including external. Its the brainwave encoding and decoding data thats important and that should be more than usable right now.

My totally blind husband tried Orcam glasses. He returned them because they did not work for him. But they might work for low vision folks.

Its possible to take video and images from a cats head so the opposite should be possible to put an image or video into some ones head. The problem is that unlike a cat where the minds eye is right next to the top of the Skull, a human has a substantial amount of brain matter so a device would need to go up the nose or drilled into the top of the head down above the pineal gland, and obviously they haven't figured out how to do it.
