Just letting your veteran fans out there know that if you are blind and you are interested in envision AI or the orcaine glasses, you can get them at the VA free of charge. You just have to go to the blind center and order one. Or have the optometry team refer you to the blind center.
It's not perfect but still pretty amazing. Thank you Tamara and Robby for this honest review.
I think so too! My pleasure. I’m glad you enjoyed it. :)
For five thousand plus dollars the battery life should be a lot better than a couple of hours. Colors ought to be recognized. The reading feature was impressive but so much money for so little.
I was also shocked by how little battery life it had for being the top model at nearly $6000.
You and I agree on that one. It’s the biggest limitation on the device. That and not being able to make calls.
This is ridiculous. This kind of thing will be $30 in the future
😊
Thanks for your honest review. Spot on with the pros and cons.
Thanks Caitlin. Glad you agree!
Excellent walkthrough. Thank you 💪🏽
Thank you! I’m so glad you liked it. :)
I’ve heard about them a lot lately. Thank you for doing a review about it.
My pleasure! So glad you enjoyed it. :)
Thank you. I'm so glad that I found your channel. I take care of my mom and she lost her vision from diabetes in the last 3 years, I am learning a lot from your channel on how to better help her now that she is living with me.
I'm glad to be of service. :)
thank you , wonderful review
So happy you enjoyed it! :)
You guys are so cute on this episode! Tech really amazes me. That shape & colour of the glasses really becomes you Tamara.
Thanks! This one was pretty fun to film
Great review. I’m personally not a fan, especially for the price, and want to see more innovation in the space. Thanks for your review!
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’m all for innovation! We definitely could use more competition in the space.
Nice review so far of the ORCAM! Even though I have some usable vision, this can be helpful if I have a hard time reading small text or a few others. I like how it’s pretty accurate with text! I might look into this! Thanks for the review Tamara! I’ll be looking out for the next two parts of the series!
Thanks Christian!
The orcam is very cool but inaccessible to most people due go the price will say the £5 note was outdated so that's why it may have struggled- the uk has switch to plastic money just like Canadian dollars from the old paper money ( which I think you had ). At 12:02 i was so confussed and thought it was broken but then realised it was speaking in French 😂 Great review I love your channel 💜
Thank you so much Cosmic Goat! And thanks for the tip on the outdated notes. That would definitely make it more challenging if it hasn't been trained on those. it's been a good long while since I've been to the UK. Hopefully, I'll get back there soon and see those new plastic notes. :)
Thanks for the really honest review, Tamara. I totally agree that this tech is way overpriced for its functionality. And I love your channel name. 😀 I took a look at your home page to see what other videos you have, and there are a lot of them that would be useful to me as a legally blind person. So I will be going back to watch those. Liked and subscribed!
Thank you! I'm so glad you found it helpful. I'm hoping either built in or adaptive tech can come down in price with future iterations as it seems to be a global challenge. I'll be checking out the new Read3 in the next few weeks so we'll see how that goes!
Thank you so much it helped me a lot
Thank you Tamara!, for reviewing this product. Orcam, impressive, really good reading books, what a very interesting review, really good testing, orientation is so important, good it could identify peoples faces. thank you! Kind regards Tony from Scandinavia
Glad you enjoyed Tony. I did love it’s reading g abilities!
@@UnsightlyOpinions Hi Tamara, I always look forward to your video reviews. Thank you! Kind regards Tony from Scandinavia
Well done
That was so interesting
Thanks Rhonda. It’s a pretty neat little device. :)
Thank you for such an honest review. I have personally been pretty unimpressed with these so far.
As you mentioned in the video, I have seen a lot of people making go fund me pages just to afford these, because it seems like they are sometimes marketed as this miracle solution for everything about blindness, and the price point makes them seem worth it. It’s really upsetting when I encounter newly blind people who think this will be the solution to everything and collect all their family’s money only to end up with such a mediocre product. I think the price point is absolutely untenable for how little it truly does, especially given that this is the top model currently available.
From what I have experienced, the only feature that’s really pretty decent is the OCR software, and while the OCR is better than most other programs out there, it’s not so much better that it’s even remotely worth that price. I think a lot of people would be better off just getting a smart phone stand and using Seeing AI most of the time, unless they have no choice but to do a large amount of heavy reading with no other accommodations available. That seems really rare, because at school or at work, I think most people would be much better off getting proper accessible textbooks or getting a human reader for free through the school or workplace.
I also felt that the smart reading feature was really interesting but left a lot to be desired. It seemed to still do a pretty poor job at finding specific words or using context to determine how much of a section you wanted to read. The fact that it couldn’t find instructions was a real disappointment, because that is the biggest reason I would want to use the feature.
I was also somewhat impressed by the color identifier, because most camera-based identifiers are pretty terrible, but I still wouldn’t pay anywhere even close to $5000 for it. There are other devices like the Colorino that are more accurate and overwhelmingly less expensive.
The currency identifier is also a huge downside to me. The fact that it’s so unreliable is worrisome, because that is definitely something you don’t want to take risks with. Even seeing AI is much better at identifying currency, and at least here in the US, you can actually get a free iBill currency reader from the bureau of engraving that is far more accurate than anything else. Heck, you can even purchase a currency reader if you don’t want to apply for the program and still pay like 5% of what this costs.
The facial recognition software also seems pretty useless, because by the time you are standing face-to-face with someone in such close proximity, it would be much easier to just talk to the person, because if they are looking straight at you, they have probably recognized you and will tell you who they are well before the glasses do. I just don’t see a real use for the technology, but blindness tech places keep trying to incorporate it into things like this.
I think I was most disappointed by the chair and doorway recognition features though. That was the thing I was most curious about because there isn’t really another product on the market that can do that, but it’s functions so poorly that it’s practically unusable. At that point, it would be much easier and more efficient to just ask somebody in the space to point them toward an open chair or doorway, or heck, even to call an Aira agent to find those things. Especially now that you can make five minute Aira calls for free.
Ultimately, these seem somewhat useful as OCR, but overall, I find them not at all worthwhile at such a ridiculous price point. Realistically, I would personally probably only be willing to pay around $50 for these, because almost everything they do can be done much better by other means which are often much cheaper or even completely free. I would be interested to see if the technology improves drastically, but right now, it just feels like it’s trying to solve a problem that has already been well and truly solved by plenty of other things that are much easier to access.
Thank you for your in depth response. I feel very much the same. The marketing can be misleading so I’m hoping by making content that is balanced we can change that perception.

5*️⃣
Hi Tamara, the only reason I would consider it is because it’s more subtle, and convenient, than waving my iPhone around to use Seeing AI. Especially since getting my iPhone out means juggling my walking stick and long white cane and for some reason I only have 2 hands 😉
It would be so useful when I go to the hospital to check I’m at the correct reception area or which floor I’m on when walking up and down the flights of stairs as I’ve miscounted on the the double flights before now. Double flights have a half flight of stairs, then a landing, then the next half flight of stairs is in effect taking you back the way you came as it’s 180° to the first. The landing of the next floor is the same size and shape as the halfway landing.
Oh and being able to find my daughter when she’s meeting me at the train station, or my son when we’re meeting in town would be easier if I don’t have to wave my phone around.
Goodness most days I wish I was an octopus with all I need to juggle. 😂 I agree having hands feee to find and hold things is invaluable.
@@UnsightlyOpinions oh yes why is it we always need to take everything plus the kitchen sink when we go out
I’ve been thinking about getting one of those. I know friends that have those and it seems to work great.
I agree! I was generally very impressed with it. Sadly it’s the price point that’s a hard sell for me at the moment.
@@UnsightlyOpinions I wish technology wasn’t so pricey. Especially if it’s stuff that has to do with people who are blind or disabled.
I was really surprised with the currency error. I would think currency would be one of the easier programs.
It surprised me too! I’m not sure why it made that mistake, it repeatedly insisted that note was more than it was but was perfect with every other currency. Perhaps a coding error?
I was pretty impressed with the reading! Other apps seem to need a constant internet connection to sort of work. Being able to use offline could be beneficial for jobs that have strict security measures. I’m excited to see the next review!
I was too! And I’m a tough customer when it comes to my praise especially with expensive tech haha.
I like this technology, from what you had to say, Tamara, but I do wish it had a longer battery life. (I don’t currently have it, but I might look into it). I have pretty good useable vision, so I likely wouldn’t use it everyday, but it still might be helpful for me in some ways. And yes, the price range does seem very high.
The battery is definitely one of its biggest downsides for sure! They do have a demo pair that they send out to people so if you are considering it, look into that and see if it’s the right thing for you. :)
Great review, but I have a question. Can we increase or decrease its speed as per our convenience?
Thank you! You absolutely can. While I tend to keep things at a conversation speed for reviews, I prefer tech at crazy speeds so I can confirm it will go both significantly faster and slower than show.
This kind of reminds me of E sight for low vision folks. It’s marketed at an extremely high price point, and promises that it will solve all of your vision loss. my vocational rehabilitation councilor suggested I get a pair Through them and it was a horrible decision. Not only were the glasses extremely uncomfortable to wear, their functionality was very limited, and my technology plan was down $30,000. It was ridiculous! This tends to be a trend in the low vision and blindness community with new technology. That being said, I thought this was a wonderful and thorough review, and I was very impressed with the OCR capabilities!
Esight is $30000?!?! I don’t have words.
Hello Tamara. I have an Or-Cam read and I do like the ability to slow down the voice of the read function so it is not overpowering
That’s awesome! Having customization so it’s where you are comfortable is a great thing. I’m usually the opposite with voices. How fast can I make it go on all of my tts devices haha
Thank you for doing this.
My pleasure! I love exploring accessibility and seeing what's out there.
I have it love it
FROM CROATIA: Thank you for the excellent presentation of the ORCAM Blind Smart Glasses. Could you please provide information about language support? Is there support for the Croatian language?
Hi there! I've pulled this from the orcam website, it looks like it has English, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, French, Hebrew, Danish, Polish, Norwegian, Portuguese, Romanian, Finnish, Swedish, Czech, Turkish, Hungarian, Russian, Bulgarian, Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean. I don't see Croatian on the list.
What is your visual level or ability?
Good Afternoon, Tamara: How are you? I hope this message finds you well. Though blind, I am also autistic; therefore, navigating social situations can be challenging. In addition, most people’s touch phobia prevents using my sense of touch to decide on social expectation application. Though aware of the stereotype of blind people touching people’s faces, when you are blind and autistic, physical touch becomes a helpful communication tool. Any advice on how to navigate the situation
Hi Cole. I'm wondering what you hope to understand or learn through touch during social situations? I too find touch to be a tremendous help in so many ways, but am not sure what I would learn in a conversation with someone by touching their face aside from if they had a beard or their type of hair, which to me isn't really important. I'm not saying it's wrong, just my interpretation. If you are using alternate forms of communication like hand over hand sign, then of course touch would be important. So what's your take?
@@UnsightlyOpinions What I hope to learn through touch is not the person's appearance, but as I am visually impaired and autistic, I hope to discern their facial expressions: happy, sad, angry, disgusted, etc., forming the proper, neuro- typically "socially acceptable" response. Also, tactile feedback allows the determination of body language, while checking your pulse allows the determination of the person's physical exertion, stress, lucidity, etc.

Just a correction they are not OrCam blind smart glasses. but it's called OrCam MyEye.
Wonder if you could read the screen in front of the church where they put the songs?
It’s possible if you know where to point your head to look. :)
I have or cam and it is a complete bust it does some good but the battery goes out real quick
Thank you so much for sharing this. It was one of my fears when I started using it and wondered how daily users fared. The battery just isn’t quite enough for daily use.
I'm from India, I want to buy this device from where can I get it. I checked on amazon but couldn't get to see . Please let me know
By the way, did you try in low lighting?
I did. It wasn’t nearly as good, but much better than the previous iteration of orcam.
Would this help a patient with glaucoma
It would honestly depend on the individual and what they were trying to do. If someone is tech savvy phone apps would also work well
Is it uncomfortable when it pushed down you ear?
I didn’t find it pushed my ear down at all. It felt very similar to eating a regular pair of glasses or sunglasses.
I liked that this would read another language, but does anyone know if it will translate a foreign language into English?
I don't believe it has a built in translator. :)
Yeah lol acts funny sometimes
Add chat gpt and we are so close to an a.i. robot right there. Would it also be nice if we can ask for an english translation of any foreign text?
I totally agree! the new be my eyes with chat got is awesome. I just wish I could do that as on-demand in a wearable like the orcam glasses
What about RP ?
How do you mean? Would it be helpful to someone with Retinitis Pigmentosa? If so, I would say that would be individual dependent.
Ya... I guess for some... these may provide some benefit..... but I can't imagine the constant hassle of use would ever allow these to move into the winners circle. Just get a big magnifying glass and keep life simple.
Unfortunately a magnifying glass won't work for me, but I totally see your point. They aren't as seamless as I would like either.
what about mueyes
I'm not sure what you mean. Can you tell me more?
How much cost… plz
Depending on the country you live in I think they are about $5600.
5,800😮
It's pricy!
Hellow friends, thank u for vidio.
I wont to get it. But I have not manny.
It's a common issue with OrCam. It is a very expensive device. But there are less expensive and even free solutions that will do many of the same things. So hopefully you can find something that will work for you.
it will not attach to any pair of glassess like the weire rim glassess the frames have to be thick and havey i know i have one.
Thanks for the feedback. I suppose that makes sense. It is pretty heavy for light frames.
also it is not that easy to use and there is a lot of set up as in finding people and telling you who they are.
Thank you for your feedback. It will be helpful to those who are looking to buy one!
AI voice is speaking very fast. Can you slow down the speech speed?
Speaks too fast can really comprehend what is the divisor reading
It's a great product but you have a phone number. Where I can talk to somebody in person. That would be the product I'll probably be looking for.
