  • Round 2... Ding Ding Ding! Watch a lifetime Cinema 4D user go head to head, pound for pound with Blender.
I know nothing about how to operate Blender or how it works. I thought it would be fun to record my eperiences learning it as a life time C4D user, unboxing Blender if you will.

As a blender (power)user for about a decade now, this was hilarious to watch. I use C4D too but once you get the shortcuts and menus binded to your muscle memory, blender is the fastest software to use because of how versatile their reliability on keyboard usage is, across the entire program. I do miss some of the niche features from C4D though when I occasionally have to switch, but blender development is another thing who's rapidly catching up tp the industry standards, the amount of updates and features that this software is getting makes me feel like a spoiled child.

This is a clever concept. Watching someone learn the software in real time. It's a great way to target all those little "gotchas" that take so long to weed out. And I'm a C4D oriented person who should probably learn some Blender so this is personally relevant to me which is nice.

Just in the same boat right now during free quarantine time.
One of the first things I did, was changing the setting for Zoom, Pan etc. like it is in c4d.
I use alt+leftclick/rightclick/middleclick for rotate/zoom/pan a lot in C4D and i think it is the best navigation setting ever :D
To do so, go to Edit>Preferences>Navigation
    - Orbit&Pan, check Auto Depth on
    - Zoom, change Zoom Axis to horizontal
    - check "Zoom to Mouse Position" on
go to: Preferences>Keymap, open 3D View, 3D View (global)
Search for Pan View, Rotate View and Zoom View and change it to alt+leftclick/rightclick/middleclick
If you want to have the same zoom/pan functionality in the node editor, change it in View2D accordingly.

How long did it take you to learn Blender? I used to know c4d inside out, I was not capable of doing everything but it was super intuitive.

So here everyone tells their stories, let me tell you, I initially went to the blender and was surprised by its simplicity and huge community base, I also understood the rendering engine and how to make materials, when I came to Cinema, I was surprised and it seemed to me too difficult, I did on the redshift engine, making material and trying to make a model, beat my🤣 P.s All programs are good with something and it will be good to know one or another 👌

I started my 3D journey with maya in the early 2000s and switched to blender when I was unemployed for obvious reasons. I fell in love with it almost immediately. I’ve recently tried learning C4D with my new job. I understand it’s powerful but it’s not intuitive. At least not from my perspective. Even with all the online tutorials I feel like blender wins hands down. Again, coming from Maya the learning curve was much quicker with blender vs C4D. Learning the EEVEE render is a game changer. Mastering it can save you hours or days of rendering if photo realism isn’t paramount.

As someone who use C4D and Blender I really don't understand you. If some software is "intuitive" this is cinema. Blender is confused mess. One clicks stuff in cinema are in Blender entire procedure. Functions hidden behind $#itty shortcuts, instead to be easy visible and approachable. Zero customization of interface. Don't start song about pie menu. Also Blender automatically makes tons of bloat, and you must clean your scene regularly. Blender has his own advantages, but practicality, short learning curve, simplicity of use is not on this list.

When I first started 3D, C4D was like blender. No one used it and it was a bit of a risk to learn. Of course we know what happened. But yes I agree that for now, Blender is best for personal use. • @pauliusmscichauskas558

There was never a round 3.
    Quick to give up lol.
I see that you are using alternative hotkeys for Blender, which is why you can't find some hotkeys. This hotkey set may not be finished. I'd highly recommend not using that.
For example, toggling the quad view would be Ctrl+Alt+Q normally. I'd also recommend not to ever use the toolbar to select tools, unless it's sculpt mode. The tools there are incredibly slow to use. I see that they are intuitive, which is why they were added in blender 2.8, but they should be avoided if you want to use blender to its full potential. Everything has very quick hotkeys! So, you just need a hotkey cheat sheet to start going.
Still, watching someone open blender for the first time and learn in real time looks like a good way to judge the UI design and how it can be improved.
