i just not understand "GradientLight.exr" What kind of thing is this? Where can we find a picture?.. can you help me please
That title is not hyperbole. Great tips. Thanks!
I'm really curious about which pass are you using when you are playing with the comp. In that particular case are you playing with the beauty-lights pass or the diffuse-lights passes? Thanks!
great tips...but I would love to know if there are any ways to speed up rendering times; specifically the pre-processing (preparing) steps. I have a animation now which I need to test render continuously for tweaking. frames are taking 1 to 2 seconds but preparing takes 5 minutes! The progressive renderer doesn't have this issue but the IPR unfortunately cannot render out sequences. that would be a life saver!
in windows: system->display->graphics settings->enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling fixed it for me. Hope this helps anyone!
Sure, send us your file and we will have a look. 🙂
Incredibly helpful! Thank you sooooo much
You’re welcome 🙂
Thanks for amazing lighting lesson, love to see also about some cool motion camera tricks
You’re welcome 🙂
Fantastic
Love the video and the ideas presented here. A few things to consider when choosing the third method (I would too): 1. You can render at a lower resolution and increase it again in post with enhancement software (like Topaz) to save render time. 2. You can even render at a lower framerate and also increase it in post with such enhancement software to save time. Such software might not be cheap but definitely worth it. Just make sure to not use Optical Flow in Pr/Ae since that usually doesn't provide good results.
Thank you for the tips!
How do you do the materials for this in octane?
This is amazing! I'm learning Cinema 4D and this is so useful. Would it be possible for you to share the project, specifically the lights? I’d love to explore your file :)
Send us an email and we will be happy to 🙂
A pro lighting tutorial. Thanks man!
You’re welcome!
This doesn't seem to work anymore as the RS Texture node seems to only accept the c4D shader node as a filename input. Any solutions on latest version 2024.42?
You can use the old Shader Graph node and it will work in there still. 🙂
Saved my life! Why do they change tgis after 20 years?
☺️
how to render this with alpha?
One question. Why would you do the color change in post rather than in render? Isn't it looking better if you do it in real?
Excellent question. The short answer is changing the colors in CG vs Comp will be EXACTLY the same if done correctly. The long answer is the benefit of switch the colors in comp is huge. 1. What happens if the client last minute wants it to be blue instead of red? Now you have to go back into CG, wait for render and comp it again. On the other hand, if you have rendered out all your passes and reassembled it in comp you can easily color correct the diffuse to make it blue. 2. You have light years more control of your 3D in comp then you ever will in C4D. Almost 10 out of 10 times comping your CG will make it look better. I always recommend comping your CG. 3. By taking the extra time to properly setup your 3D in comp you will end up saving yourself so much precious time because any change will require everything mentioned in #1. The moral is to always comp your CG if you have the time, it’s always worth the time investment! 💪💪💪
Nice video, but since I'm a newbie user in Cinema 4D and I'm using Vray to follow along, I couldn't find the "color user data" node equivalent in said render engine. I have various objects that I want to flicker but as soon as I apply the Vray light material, the random field noise animation gets overridden, just like in your instruction video. Help would be appreciated. Cheers.
Hello! Unfortunately I am not familiar with Vray so I am not able to help you with this, I wish I could!
@@YouAndMeAcademy Thanks, anyway. Eventually, I'll figure it out. Great video, very clear and easy to follow. Keep'em coming. Cheers.
Thanks for the video! One question: How did you set up the mirror in the layers of the plate object? Or am I missing something?
If I am understanding your question correctly, I simply have the mirror on its own layer and then I just turned on the render visibility in the layer panel.

where did you get the model??
Sketchfab 🙂
How do you get rid of the beziers
Maybe the best CG lightning tutorial on this website.
Thank you! 🙂
Does this work in version 2024?
Yes it does 🙂
I would like to follow along with the tutorial. Where do I get the base model for the product?
It’s off of Sketchfab 🙂
@@YouAndMeAcademy great! Can you please share the link?
How did you created the "zero" shortcut to zero everything out? TY.
Go to the Command Manager, search for Reset Transform and set the shortcut to “0” or whatever you’d like 🙂
I see that you have the keyboard at an angle. Do you move the object around the camera when animating or do you move the camera around the object? For me as a videographer I always move the camera around the object but wanted to get your thoughts, does that translate over to 3D?
It depends, but my general rule of thumb is keep the product more static that way it stays lit by your lights. If you start moving the product, eventually it will fall out of the light. I also always try to keep whatever I am lighting as close to 0 world space as possible, just makes like easier.
Cool
💪💪💪
thanks a lot
You’re welcome 🙂
houdini version?
Unfortunately, no. 😒
Uff da. Trying to show a shadow on a transparent background seems to require Visibility override enabled, and on the matte tab enable affect alpha, and setting the alpha to anything less than 1.
How I can to render volumetric lights in alpha channel?
THANKS YOU!!!!!!
Thank you so much, I have a question, why didn't you work on the Unreal Engine
It’s all a matter of preference. You can do this in any render engine, they all are mostly the same. Just like giving someone a Nikon vs Canon camera, they both can take great pictures, but it’s up to the user to make it happen.
Hi bro, I realized once you change a light name also a target name change automatically. Please can you explain about that trick?
I think that was me editing the video so you didn’t have to watch me typing 😂
😂Alright brother, I typically use Espresso to link names between multiple objects, so that when I change a name in one object, all other similar objects also change. @@YouAndMeAcademy
The most frustrating thing is it works only with Sky Dome backgrounds. I would like to be able to put a plane behind my object, then play with lights, but that is not possible.
Thank's man! This is an ingenious solution for a specific case!
Thank you. I figured this technique out of necessity on a job back in the day 🥵
Hey Joe! Great stuff!!!
Thanks man!!
this is amazing, how differnt is this to the new toon shader in RS currently?
"Thanks for the question! We created this before RS Toon was even announced so it relies mainly on a network of OSL shaders and mini setups we created with a custom UI interface only in Xpresso. You link a light into the shader (hence xrpesso nodes only) and it uses the direction for lighting. The three biggest differences are 1. the Halftone Pattern section we created. RS Toon has a node called "Tonemap Pattern" which does the same thing. However ours allows for any custom input, RS Toon (hopefully will eventually). Meaning you can bring in any image you want to create a pattern, your own sketchy lines, markers, squiggly shading, watercolor textures, paint, you name it - you can use it with YMA Toon. 2. YMA Toon comes with 30 presets to drag and drop ready to modify and use out of the box 3. Also we would say the RS Toon outline is stronger since it was coded from the ground up. So honestly mix and matching the two isn't such a bad idea!"
Awesome, I think I would like to use this still over ra too. Shader for now, but is it available for Houdini?
@@YouAndMeAcademy one more question if I may, will this or does this work over in Houdini?
@angelous4x currently it only works with Cinema 4D. 💻
@@YouAndMeAcademy if there is ever a houdini version "shut up and take my money"

Can you do this with Blender? What do you think about blender?
yes of course same idea about shaders, area lights, and animation.
Absolutely! These concepts are based on real world techniques, which is what every 3D app is trying to replicate… the real world.
@@YouAndMeAcademy it is really funny how much people dont think about lighting in rendering the same way we do in a physical studio ..
Thank you for this tutorial! It's fantastic because it not only teaches which buttons to click but also explains the motivation and purpose behind each light in the scene, which is the most important part ..
