My main memory of this song is a pro wrestling tag team called The Rock And Roll Express from the NWA, which is now owned by Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins. Watching them beat the Soviets to win the world tag team championship was a serious excitement peak to this 12 year old cold warrior.

The ‘80s,for as much as it’s a decade known for the electronic sound, had a LOT of retro ‘50s-sounding hits, from Billy Joel’s The Longest Time album to the Stray Cats. I spent most of my high school years and some of my college years (before I got into New Wave) listening to the oldies stations in Chicago and Milwaukee.
I even got into a self-imposed challenge of trying to stump the Milwaukee station’s all-request Saturday night DJ by calling in with obscure songs. I finally got him when I asked for the Dion and the Belmonts’ cover of When You Wish Upon a Star-he had never even heard of it before, but I had it on a mixtape. I also got a reaction from him when I requested the Kingston Trio’s MTA. I had told them I was calling from Marquette, so they knew I was a college student, and he just asked me how the HECK I knew the song?! My dad had raised me on his folk music albums, especially the Kingston Trio, which is what I told him. He dedicated the song to Dad, which was really sweet.

Me, in the 80s. We would have been best friends if we'd gone to the same high school. 😎👍 First real job in college was at a record store IN THE 80s because of what I knew solely by listening to the oldies stations and my parents' record collection. Best. Job. Ever. Especially so when working in Memphis. Good times.

I was born in 1991 and I listen to Jim Cornette’s podcasts, he was the manager of the Midnight Express, one of the best heel tag teams in wrestling in the 1980’s. Anyways, this song is one of the songs the Midnight Express’s rival the Rock N’ Roll Express used in the 80’s and a lot of young women loved them. So I’m kind of surprised some older wrestling fans haven’t pointed that out. That might be what this song is best known for.

Used to play my 8 track copy of Out of the Blue late at night while being outside late at night with my telescope in the seventies. Worked all summer to save up for the thing in 78. Was checking out the Milky way one night while listening to The Whale and a little light went flying through the field of view wjile it was playing. Cosmic.

Amber and Jay, I highly recommend you listen to "All Over The World" by ELO and I also recommend you react to the flash Mob dancing video of this song. This song is upbeat and positive and fun, and the video with everyone dancing just adds to the fun. For a Chicago song I would definitely recommend Chicago with Peter Cetera singing lead vocals. One song you haven't reacted to is "If You Leave Me Now" which is the first song by Chicago with Peter Cetera doing lead vocals and it became a number one hit. It is one of Chicago's best and most beautiful songs.

You guys said you wanted to hear more powerful voices/really really good opera. .......Okay you said that a year ago, but still. You NEED to see Diana Damrau's Queen of the Night (Der Holle Rache) aria. Not only can this woman punch staccato notes right in the face, her vocal gymnastics are amazing. SHE IS NOT MICKED IN THIS VIDEO. To put the icing on the cake, Der Holle Rache is the THE MOST difficult aria for soprano ever written. There are super, high notes as well as those staccato runs (Crisp staccato is insanely hard to do in the first place), but she effortlessly plows right over it. And she can ACT. Like...at the SAME TIME. Opera singers in the past had an ongoing problem, with this song in particular, wherein they would just stand there, mouths hanging open as notes fly out. Technically flawless but.....ye gods. For heaven's sake, the song's title in loosely translated English is "Vengeance from Hell" and it's about murdering someone. Standing still with no expression whatsoever doesn't look or sound even the teensiest bit menacing. But Damrau nails the rage and fury.....uh...actually she nails it a little TOO well...her Crazy Eyes are kinda scary....anyway. You should go and check her out.

I suggest "Calling America" from their last album before they broke up. It's very 1986, but pure ELO.

This came out in a period of the 70s when there was a big rock n roll throwback fashion, at least . I was just a little kid then and I looooved it lol. I don't really remember if Grease kicked it off or if it was the fact that rock n roll was the childhood sound of young adults and the musicians grew up on it too. At the time I was just too busy boogieing my little legs off 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Always down for some ELO, but "Captain EO" by Michael Jackson is a go. Bars! Chicago suggestions: If This Is Goodbye, Along Comes A Woman, Feeling Stronger Everyday, Old Days, If You Leave Me Now, Hard Habit To Break, Love Me Tomorrow, Look Away, Beginnings, Colour My World, Make Me Smile.

saw them live in the late 70's in the old Pontiac (MI) Silverdome.....at the time, ELO consisted of guitar, bass, drums, piano, synth, violin, and 2 cellos...check out their song "Sweet Talkin Woman"

Classic song! And as a wrestling fan of over 40 years, every time I hear that song I think the old-school Tag Team of Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson otherwise known as the rock ‘n’ roll Xpress! Lol!
Back to the music, you need to look up “evil woman“ by this group as well.

  • @tomasgonzalezmarin6118

Thanks for reacting to ELO again!! They have so many songs!!
Maybe you have to react to Livin' Thing (a complete classic), Telephone Line, Shine a little love (Disco), Confusion, Can't get it out of my head, Fire on High, Wild West Hero, Turn to Stone, Standin' in the rain, Night in the City, Rockaria!, etc
    Regards from Chile 🙂

This song, along with "Hold On Tight (To Your Dreams), was such a departure from everything else they did - but... it was the 80s, and they were joining the trend of bringing 1950s and 60's sounds into their music.
There were quite a few acts in the 80s who tried to bring back sounds from the 1960s like this: The Honeydrippers (Robert Plant's 80s group after Led Zeppelin split up - their "Sea of Love" is a remake of a 1960s original), The Stray Cats ("Try Stray Cat Strut" or "Sexy and 17"), and others that I can't recall right now.

I have asked several times for a reaction to the movie "Xanadu" which stars Olivia Newton John and features the music of ELO. Maybe you could start by searching CZcams for "Strange Magic & Livin'Thing" ELO (HD). The title doesn't say this is live, but it is.
