The guys you didn’t recognise were Jeff Lynne of ELO and George Harrison - he was in a little-known Liverpool band named The Beatles 😊
They definitely need to do more Beatles…because not to recognize George Harrison 🤯 lol
Jeff is also one of the most prolific music producers ever too.
He produced a fair bit of Harrison's later works, Roy Orbison's last albums (including posthumous) and Tom Petty too.
There's probably more I'm sure.
And the drummer was Jim Keltner, legendary session man.

A true supergroup!
Roy Orbison had passed away before the video was filmed but he was on the album. The guitar in the rocking chair was in tribute of him.

The empty rocking chair with the guitar is a tribute to Wilbury The legendary Roy Orbison who died shortly after recording this album and before the video was shot. The other Wilburys are George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty. Legendary session musician Jim Keltner on drums was the “unofficial 6th Wilbury”👍

Jim was offered full Wilburyhood, but declined it. He's credited as "Buster Sidebury."

My heart catches at the final 'end of the line'. Seeing Roy Orbison's photo makes me cry. He was such a huge talent and experienced so many tragedies
When Petty sings, "...happy to be alive," I always choke up a little.

There is a whole story about how this came about. George Harrison was having dinner with Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison. He was telling them he needed to record a song for a B side of a record he was releasing. They mentioned that Bob Dylan had a recording studio decided to call him to see if he was home and they could use the studio. To their surprise he was home and said, sure come over. George said he had left his guitar over at Tom Petty's house so they went there first. When they talked to Tom he decided to come along. This is how they got this conglomeration of talent all together. When they recorded the song their manager said there was no way they were going to release something this good as a B side. As a result, they put The Traveling Wilbury's album together.
I had also heard that Lynne really pushed for Orbison to be in this. I wasn't aware that Lynne apparently was a super fan of Roy and had such a respect for him.

You almost got it right there, Derwood, m8 . . . You just need to watch the Documentary . . . George Harrison had previously asked, and then brought Jeff Lynne in to manage one of the Beatles Albums that they were having problems with (Too many cheigs!). They were all surprised at his actual skill in doing that album for them - even to being able to re-do a song on it which John Lennon sang on - (Free As A Bird), but it was very badly recorded back in the day and only on a cassette tape. Jeff took the copy home and scrubbed and washed it many times that night and so did his magic on it and the missing JL could then easily be heard . . .
After that, not only did they get Jeff to do their next album for them - but when they finally split and George wanted help as a solo artst, he just asked Jeff . . . George had his own recording studio at his house - and after one long session when they were just relaxing, it just came about that they talked about who they would would pick if starting up a Super group. Jeff knew Roy and Tom Petty from helping them both prior to this so he added them to this group. George knew Dylan, as well as the drummer Keltner who also had his own studio as well. His studio was the easiest for them all to get to to begin writing and recording the new groups songs. As naturally everyone who was asked agreed to join it . . . A documentary, almost an hour long, I think? - was done about Jeff Lynne himself and what he'd done for many in music . . .
In the same documentary - Roy's wife talked about him and Roy's time together and how he got Roy back into enjoying and playing music again - Georges wife and son talked about him and Jeff in the same way along with Paul Mac & Ringo, as did Tom Petty who got Jeff to help him with his song, Free Falling . . . and there were quite a few more as well . . . it was a really good doccy to watch if you can manage to find it now?

@Rene 17: Roy was still alive when the song was recorded (obviously), but had passed by the time the video was made. That's why they showed his guitar by itself in the otherwise empty rocking chair during his vocals, w/ a framed photo of him in the background.

I give Amber credit for recognizing Roy Orbison's voice on this song. Sadly he died after this song was recorded but before the video was made, which is why during his vocal part on the song you see an empty rocking chair with a guitar next to a photo of Roy Orbison. Roy was alive when the first video from this album was released, so you should check out that song by the Wilburys called HANDLE ME WITH CARE. Excellent song by a supergroup STACKED with legends.

The empty rocking chair was a tribute to Roy Orbison, who passed before they made the video. As for Top Petty, his biggest fan was Stevie Nicks. She often made guests appearances at his concerts and they have a couple of great duets. My favorite TP song will always be Refugee!!!!!

So respectful of Roy. They showed the chair rocking as though he just got up to get a drink and set his guitar on the chair til he got back.
The Traveling Wilburys were a "supergroup" who got together in the early 1990s. They produced two albums together. The members were Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison (The Beatles), Jeff Lynne (ELO), and Roy Orbison. By the time this video was produced, Roy Orbison had died. The empty rocking chair and photograph represent him in the video. Today, only Lynne and Dylan are the surviving members.

This was definitely George Harrison’s band, according to the other Wilbury’s. He put this group together…all great friends of his, and with each other. This group came together very organically. It’s an incredible story, how they all just happened to be in town at the same time (rare, with their touring schedules). And all ended up at the same place at the same time one day when George was going to record a song at Jeff Lynn’s home studio, and he asked if they wanted to contribute. It sounded so good, they decided to create 9 more songs and create a whole album over the next 10 days….it won a Grammy and went triple platinum!!! So…they did one more album! Funny thing….they all took on pseudo names for the album so no one knew who The Wilbury’s were, at first!! But their voices are so distinctive, it didn’t take long to figure it out!

Perhaps incorrect to say Beatles for George considering the solo output he had already recorded prior to this album.
His first solo album was the best selling solo album of any Beatle.

Saw him Glasgow in the 60's he was top of the bill and the Beatles were on before him girls screaming and on he walked one man and a guitar started playing and before he finished the first verse you could have heard a pin drop. I often thought that the Beatles would have given their eye teeth to have an audience listen like that when they played

These guys were all connected throughout the years.Roy was well enough established with a few hits in the early 1960s , when the early Beatles supported him on a British tour where they met him.They considered writing a few songs for him , hoping that such a big star might record them .....They'd already met idols such as the influential Little Richard while playing rock n roll in Hamburg ,but the band became so huge ,so quickly in the early 1960s when Beatlemania locked in that they became the headliners and Roy graciously stepped into support slot. They became great friends and mutual admirers. Everyone considered Roy the best vocalist .The Beatles met Bob Dylan when they were both on fire in those years and hugely influenced each other .Beatle George Harrison especially became a great friend to Dylan and they all admired him hugely for revolutionising pop music into rock music. Tom Petty and his band were Bob Dylan's backing band on his 1980s tours, when his original band ("The Band") had mostly broken up from its original core.Jeff Lynne of course had a long pedigree in music since the 1960s and his Electric Light Orchestra was hugely influenced by The Beatles and he later produced their later anthology series with the remaining three Beatles after John Lennon's murder in 1980.Jim Keltner, of course was one of the best session drummers in the business, well-known by every musician. It was perfect timing that these old friends got together and produced the Wilbury saga ...all playing together without too much pressure other than to please themselves....back -porch music indeed!!

The first singer was George Harrison. The empty chair and picture was for Roy Orbison (who had passed). Just look at how far you've come in a year! You now are picking out faces and voices. It is so wonderful to see how both of you have embraced this music. Roy Orbison "Only The Lonely" and "Crying" (with kd lang) will stun you.

Yeah, and that's one thing that I think separates reactors like Jay & Amber, and Jamel, and maybe Andy & Alex from a lot of the others. You can tell they're in it for the music because they're learning so much about not just history but music styles. Picking Bob Dylan out of that lineup when he didn't have any key vocals or really any straight on camera shots was pretty impressive. And picking out Roy Orbison as just a voice when he's not in the video.
Good job Jay & Amber! There's a lot more to learn and experience, obviously, but it's awesome to see you guys getting into so much music you probably were only peripherally aware even existed.

George Harrison had recorded an album that was a big hit produced by Jeff Lynne. His record company was releasing another single from the album but needed a B side. George called Jeff and told him he needed to record another song and Jeff said he was going to see Roy Orbison in concert that night. George went to the concert and they went backstage to talk to Roy. Roy had headlined an early tour in England where The Beatles opened for him. Roy wanted to be involved with the new song as did Jeff’s other guest that night, Tom Petty. They asked where they could record the song and George said he would call his friend Bob Dylan to see if they could use his studio. Bob said “ sure, but I want in” and The traveling Wilbury’s were formed.
The Wilburys were the ultimate supergroup!!
Unfortunately we've lost Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and George Harrison. There is a video that talks about how they came together as the Wilbury's, pretty much initially it wasn't planned but the first song came out so good they decided to do a couple of albums. You have to understand that many times these things are just projects that people come together to do and aren't a formal "band" that was ever intended to last. No this was not before any of their solo careers, it was just a collaboration of some of the most accomplished musicians of all time. Superstars every one of them, including Jim Keltner.
The Wilburys were the epitome of the phrase "Super Group" That much talent in the room will always produce quality music.
Especially when they checked their egos at the door. It was said they enjoyed making the music together and you can see it in the filming and results.
As usual, Amber gets it right. The whole point is it's alright. Just live and let live. The entire point of the song. An awesome array of the best of the best.
The guy with "the longer hair" is George Harrison, not Roy Orbison. Roy passed away before they did the video but is honored by the photo of him and the rocking chair with guitar during the verse he sang.
I love everything that the Traveling Wilburys did...a shame they only did two albums.

There is a missing album. At the time, the official story was the recordings were stolen and never recovered.

They got together late in their careers. Roy Orbison died of a heart attack before this video was made, yet they included his guitar and photograph. There of these wonderful musicians are gone now. Sad. This will be played at my funeral when they roll my casket out of the funeral home. It will be the end of the line for me. I loved George Harrison and Jeff Lynne has one of my favorite voices.

Can that man write a song or what. The lyrics, the story is so dense in just a few phrases, that I could make a movie based on just the first two verses of that song.

The rocking chair with the guitar rocking to the music for Roy Orbison is a great touch to this video. Every time they flash to his picture it gets me a bit.
A bunch of people sit around and make music, and have a great time doing it. That for me, is what music should convey.
When you get your friends together to jam, but your friends are all music legends.
The story: George Harrison had just finished an album Cloud Nine, and his record label wanted a B side for the single This Is Love. The Cloud Nine Album was produced by Electric Light Orchestra;s Jeff Lynne, and George called Lynne about tracking a B side. When they discussed it, over a dinner with Roy Orbison, they decided to ask Bob Dylan if they could use his home studio in Malibu, to record. George had left a guitar at Tom Petty's house, and when he went to retrieve it, Petty accompanied him back to Dylan's studio. So, Harrison, Lynne, Dylan, Petty, Orbison, and famous session drummer Jim Keltner hammered out Handle With Care. The record label thought that Handle With Care was far to good to be a mere B-SIde, and the guys had so much fun recording together, that they decided to hammer out a whole album, almost anonymously. The called themselves the Traveling Willburys, a word play for a studio technique where mistakes on recordings are not discarded, but, handled with the comment "we'll bury it in the mix." They ended up with two albums, Volume 1 with Orbison, and Volume 3, after Roy's passing. Even their album names were a joke, as they skipped Volume 2!
I always think the record label's decision to ask them to make a full album has to be the most positive case of 'executive meddling' in music history!
I remember when George Harrison was doing interviews about his album. He was asked about The Traveling Wilburys. He said he needed a song for side B (as you said above) and Lynne said Let's go over to Bob's house. He has a home studio. George said fine. They rounded up everybody and ended up at "Bob's House". When they drove up, he said he suddenly realized that they were at Bob Dylan's house. After talking it over as a group, the songwriter's broke off from the music folk. One group came up with lyrics and one group came up with music scores. Then they worked together to put it together. Because they were all working around tour dates, it took some weeks. He said it was a fun experience for them all. Just a bunch of guys sitting around playing acoustic guitars and making up lyrics. At that time in the late 80's, he said he did not know another contemporary group that could do what they did. He complained that a lot of music was electronic and no one really were able to write or play music. So I love this group for just the spontaneous and magical way that they produced the albums. And like everyone else, the last video with the empty chair saddens me. But what a nice tribute to a fellow artist and friend.
When you think of the careers of all 5 of these guys, it gives a whole new meaning to “Super Group” ! George Harrison - The Beatles. Jeff Lynn - Electric Light Orchestra. Tom Petty and The Heart breakers. And of course Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan!!! Wow! Probably will never see a group like this again.

THE EAGLES WERE A SUPER GROUP ALSO
The Highwaymen were a super group as well comprised of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristopherson, and Johnny Cash
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.
The group features George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison (who had died of a cardiac arrest before this video was produced). His voice is featured, his guitar sits in a swinging rocking chair, and you can see a framed photograph of him.
Tom Petty, George Harrison, Jeff Lynn (From Electric Light Orchestra), Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and Jim Keltner (legendary session drummer). You hear Roy Orbisons voice here, unfortunately he passed away just before this, if you notice the rocking chair with the guitar on it rocking back and forth, that was their tribute to him.

The guy on the drums was a very sought after session drummer called Jim Keltner who has worked with everyone from the early 70s onwards. Next stop is their song “Handle With Care”.
At the time they recorded this song, Roy Orbinson had passed away. The guitar in the rocking chair represented him and this song was a dedication to Roy.
It's not a dedication to Roy, not the song itself anyway - you can hear his vocals in it when they show the rocking chair so clearly he'd recorded it already.
The entire album was recorded before the "Handle with Care" music video with Orbison in it was filmed.
Its like the teacher pulled the best and brightest out of each class and threw them together!
The fun thing about The Traveling Wilburys is; each member has a pretend name to go along with the act. "Nelson Wilbury" - George Harrison, "Otis Wilbury" - Jeff Lynne, "Lefty Wilbury" - Roy Orbison, Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr." - Tom Petty, and "Lucky Wilbury" - Bob Dylan. After Roy Orbison died; it would be a few years before many of the members would get back together for another album. Vol. 3 featured the Original 4, but with new names. So now; "Spike Wilbury" - George Harrison, "Clayton Wilbury" - Jeff Lynne, "Muddy Wilbury" - Tom Petty, and "Boo Wilbury" - Bob Dylan. There hasn't been another line of this band since we lost both George Harrison and Tom Petty. RIP to all
Traveling Wilburys were formed in 1988; everyone was already a music legend by that point. They made just two albums before going their separate ways in 1991. As others have pointed out, Roy Orbison passed away just before this video was shot. Next Stops:

Others have commented accurately. This was an important, significant, comglomeration of artists that are legendary in their time! All of these guys are iconic and the melding of this union is for the benefit of all music fans everywhere... we are recipients of this perfection and should be blessed to hear them together as one.

Jeff Lynne was ELO’s lead singer, guitarist and writer. George Harrison, the other guy you did not know, was Beatle George.

Jeff Lynne from ELO as well. He produced records for Tom Petty, and The Beatles songs like Free as a Bird in the 90s. ELO are one the all-time great British bands IMO. The talent in the Wilbury's is incredible.
The drummer in the video is the legendary Jim Keltner, he’s played with just about everybody over the years.
I saw Kelter play with Duck Dunn backing CSN and Y.
Sadly we won’t see that lineup again.

Roy wasn't in this video, his voice is but he had already passed when this came out. The rocking chair with Roy's guitar was a tribute to him. The one you should have recognized Amber was Bob Dylan.
The Traveling Wilburys is a rock supergroup from 1988, made up of Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. They had a lot of great songs. "Handle With Care", "End Of The Line", "Heading For The Light" etc. Roy Orbison had passed away when this was released & they paid tribute to him with his guitar in the rocking chair. Sadly only 2 guys are now left from this group (Bob Dylan & Jeff Lynne).
This is one of the most underrated groups of all time! Made up of only pure legends!!
Underrated? They are the Number 1 Supergroup Of All Time according to many critics, won a Grammy, sold millions of albums and are still widely remembered and talked about nearly 35 years later.

Like... can it not be said that Tom Pettys combined work is superior to the Wilburys? Certainly Harrisons is. Etc...

It gave me a chuckle when y'all were like, "Tom Petty!", after George Harrison had just sung the first verse with no recognition. I really think y'all would enjoy, and get a lot out of, watching the GET BACK documentary on Disney+. And dig deep into The Beatles!
Look up “the true history of the traveling Wilbury’s” on CZcams. It’s the members of the band discussing how they all got together. It’s a 25 minute documentary. This group formed long after the height of their careers.
Well, Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever - probably his most commercially successful album - followed the Wilburys' first album. (And his most critically acclaimed, Wildflowers, even later.) So maybe not in his case. And it re-launched Orbison's career - he died before he could take advantage of it but his two posthumous records did well.
There's absolutely not one bad song of theirs, they weren't able to put too many out, only 2 studio albums were put out, one in 1988 and one in 1990. Both are excellent and worth purchasing. Unfortunately after losing Roy Orbison they stopped. RIP Roy Orbison, George Harrison and Tom Petty 💔💔💔

Roy had just died,if you look closely when he sings,they show a small portrait. And at the end there's an empty chair with a guitar.only 4 appear and I think you didn't recognize George harrison because he had no beard. other was jeff Lynn of elo.
The Wilbury's were all old friends by the time they came together for this collaboration, which started as a jam session of some friends that just wanted to get together and play. George Harrison, Bob Dylan Jeff Lynn, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison. It was after the first jam session they came up with some songs and this fantasy concept of a family band, and "The Traveling Wilbury's" were born.
Sadly Roy Orbison (every other member named Roy as an influence on their music.) passed away shortly after the album was completed. He's represented in this video as a rocking chair with guitar and his portrait. We've also since lost George Harrison and Tom Petty.

Since Roy was alive when he recorded the song with the group, and they had no idea he was to die soon after, it would be impossible to be a tribute to him.

The Traveling Wilburys were a perfectly celestial alignment of legendary stars. We were blessed! I would also suggest you check out their songs "Handle With Care", "Heading for the Light" & "Last Night".
"Heading For the Light" quite literally saved my life. I played it on repeat for HOURS during a really bad depression during my early 20s.

The Wilburys were called a supergroup because they were all stars in their own right...George Harrison of the Beatles and solo, Jeff Lynne of ELO, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty. That group does not have a bad song! Also, the drummer is Jim Keltner, a session drummer for many big names. He was invited to be a Wilburys, but said he would be a "Sidebury".

@@chronomatt6990 Hate to tell you but he was asked to be a Wilbury and he was the one to say no, "I'll just be a Sidebury", because Jim has never liked being in the lime light, thats why he never has really been a main member of any band. I was talking to Jimmy a year or so ago, he was telling he Nell Young called him about a hour before we talked and was wanting Jimmy to come play some shows with him, but Jimmy did not want to go. George and Jimmy were best of friends.
Didn't Stevie Ray Vaughn play with them at least once before he died? The "long-haired" man that she referred to is Waylon Jennings. So many of them passed away while performing with this group. Way to exit the stage. Guess why they sang about the end of the line. About to bow out.

The Traveling Wilburys is George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison (he died before the video, so the empty rocking chair with the guitar and his photograph on the box is in his memory in the video), Jeff Lynn (ELO), and Bob Dylan. They had their Wilbury names (they claimed to be half brothers) because, due to contractual limitations, they couldn't perform using their own names.
They could. They all had the blessings of their record companies to do this. The "Wilbury" names were just part of the fun.
I always love it when someone discovers the Wilburys. I first heard them in the early '90's and they became one of my favorite groups almost instantly. I think the only song I didn't like was "Tweeter & the Monkey Man" b/c it just got SO overplayed. I'm still sad they only made 2 albums, though.
I will point out that all 5 members of the Travelling Wilbury's has earned their place in the Rock-And-Roll hall of fame. In addition to the members you recognized, you have previously reviewed Jeff Lynne's music as the front man for Electric Light Orchestra (ELO).
Their first album just SLAPS from start to finish. One of my favorites of all time.
The story of how the Wilburys came together is as cool as their music. It was basically a couple of guys go together over a guitar, and one of them said "Hey, I got a friend that plays guitar too..." and it just snowballed from there. Each one of the guys has said individually that they were shocked that the rest of them wanted to include him.
The only thing they could have done better was ask Ringo to play drums.
One of them told the story of how they all left Orbison's house absolutely giddy that he said yes. And they were all like "OMG, Roy Orbison is in our band!"
