THE THREE LIONS !
After winning the 1966 World Cup, England could not achieve the successes it desired in world football. As always, they are assertive with young generation. But they have a very strong rival like Italy in their group. They are also in pursuit of surprises in Finland. An exciting competition awaits you. Have a good time :)

gosh, the camera they used in Finland vs England must have seen service in the American Civil War of 1980s. the abject quality add a mystic quality to it though :-) I really admire and grateful for your work
Thank you for your comment. We would like to find a better one, but unfortunately. Keep watching us :)
a camera from the 1980s recording a game in the 70s, time travel does exist!!
@@andrewjohnston2850Lee wee tak is out of his mind
American Civil War in the 1980s?!
@@M.Robespierre3691 Like I said "Out of his mind" not thinking straight.
Thanks for uploading this footage. England's lack of goals against Finland at home (2-1) and Luxembourg away (2-0) was a major reason they lost out to Italy in qualification for Argentina.
That heartbroken 12 yearold in 1977 agreed with you then, and the 56 year old man still feels the same now!.
2-1 at home is shocking tbh, Revie was a huge failure as England manager. It baffles me how England didn't qualify for tournaments in the 70s consistently
@@davidmarchant9386 Europen championships 1972 and 1976 World Cups in 1974 and 1978.
@@merseydave1 yeah it's bad how we didn't qualify for any of them
@davidmarchant9386 england have qualified for EVERY euro / world cup since 2010.....that's 8 in a row....and since 1996 that's 14 out of 15
Agreed gwangi64. England's 1978 World Cup dreams were dashed in Luxembourg not Rome.
England ran the italian defense ragged and had them in sixes and sevens in the wembley match. This was a first class England team , its a shame they missed out on a place in the '78 finals.
so 2nd class then ?
It was Ron Greenwood's first game as manager. England were bang average under Revie in the other qualifying games. Barnes and Coppell were outstanding against Italy and Keegan had probably his best game ever for England.
@@dannyvine3605 imagine if Clough had got the job!
Thanks a lot. Excellent channel and videos. That picture is the National English team vs Argentina 1-1 in 1977 in Boca Juniors stadium (La Bombonera)
You are right. I still have that picture in my album. It was printed in the middle pages of "Shoot" weekly magazine.
I think it was designed as a pre-World Cup Finals familiarisation trip. Gutted they didn't get to re-book their hotel.
Stan Bowles had been exiled from national team duty since '74, when he walked out on the squad after being subbed by Joe Mercer versus NI. Revie recalled him for the November '76 game v. Italy and then one more time against Holland the next year.
It sounds like he was a handful
Yep, he was. There are many stories about Bowles - the one I remember the most is him gambling away a year's wages and having to get an advance from the next year's wages Like many of that era, Bowes could never recapture his club form for his country.
Stan wasn't the answer. Too ill disciplined.
Brian Moore about Finland's equaliser at Wembley..."a little toepoke there"...quite condescending really (and reminiscent of Jimmy Hill's comment about Dave Narey's wondergoal v Brazil in '82).
softlystroll. Watching this has brought back some childhood memories. Most England games weren't shown live on TV in those days and you had to listen to the BBC radio commentary by Peter Jones, Bryon Butler et al.
I particularly remember the stumbling performances against Finland and Luxembourg at home where the frustrated Wembley crowd were chanting "What a load of rubbish" in response to England's uninspiring efforts.
England only really gave two good performances in the qualifying campaign, beating Finland 4-1 away and Italy 2-0 at home. It was very disappointing as Liverpool won the European Cup in 1977 with a largely English team so it seemed the talent was there.
Tough group...Italy and England both deserved to qualify.
England was average. Scotland was way better, had better players, and did lousy in Argentina. Imagine how England would be slaughtered, if they had qualified.
I think you are confused over the meaning of the word "qualify".
@@marcschramm6958 No mate, Italy were in fact the best team in 78 and were unlucky to lose to two long range Dutch efforts in the semi. Beat Argentina at home. England had the talent, not the managers though. Clough or Paisley but old Bob didn't want it. Poisoned chalice
@@marcschramm6958 what shit you skirt wearers chat ALL the sots p;layer were shit Never ever had a world class player ever
2-1 win against Finland at Wembley combined whit the 5-1 win by Italy was deciseve on goal dufference, given that England was outplayed in italy.
When England played Italy and lost 2:0 in Rome I was 8 and watching it with my Dad. Always remember him saying under his breath “goal” before the cross came in for Bettega. He saw it unfold and knew Italy would score. As an 8 year old it was really tough watching England get totally outplayed that Saturday afternoon.
No wonder they got outplayed seeing as the game was on a Wednesday night.
No DS mate we lost on the Saturday - nah your right and won on the Wednesday night yeah - Brooking 2 nil 👍
Wednesday afternoon the Italy 2 England 🏴 0 game in Rome, remember it well
You are lucky. Imagine being Turkish like me and watching your national team get beaten two times by 0-8 against England in a space of 2 years. Not to mention another 0-5 by England, 0-6 by Poland 0-5 by Rep. Ireland... You see, I had a REALLY tough childhood.
To be honest England we’re unlucky to get perennial qualifiers Italy in the same group, FIFA had yet to get their act together with proper weighted qualification groups. Despite some patchy performances they won all their games bar Rome. In the modern era of 6 or 7 team qualification groups they would likely finish top with that record. Loving these reviews, thank you for putting them together.
Сейчас группы по 5 и 6 команд
Don Revie take note. That's what all the old football annuals would say. This lad is an England prospect Don Revie take note. Things like that.
Muchas gracias.
Qualifying was not easy back then as there were only 14 places, pus hosts, plus holders. Even the highly fancied Yugoslavia, USSR and Czechoslovakia missed out.
The Italian taking out Keegan off the ball for England’s second.
And Tardelli had already elbowed him in the face in the first-half.
Tardelli and Gentile being tough dudes 😂😂😂
Cowardly, in the case of Tardelli.
England being England...fucking up at the worst possible time
The late, great Trevor Francis in the game v Luxembourg 🇱🇺
Thing is "They didn't get to Argentina"
Finland vs England, filmed on Daguerreotype.
This remains the last time England beat Italy in a competitive match. The next seven meetings - 3 draws, 4 Italian wins.
Actually, this is the ONLY time England beat Italy in a competitive match.
And it was a “dead rubber”. England needed to beat Italy 5-0 to get to Argentina. Not sure Zoff and co were worried when Brooking made it 2-0.
It took a while for another competitive win but England have now beaten Italy home and away in the Euro 24 qualifiers.
19:00 England vs Itlay! Incredible, Marco Tardelli didnt even receive the yellow card!
Today that would be dark red!
...but Keegan recheived for "nothing" yellow minutes later! 🤦♂
Italy should've been down to 9 men!
Yes Tardelli and Benetti should both have gone for their assaults on Keegan.
gentile might as well have played with a machine gun on the pitch, ruthless the italians in that era
Some of the dates are very suspect. The 2-0 defeat to Italy in Rome was in the summer if 76, the return at Wembley that England won 2-0 was in Nov 77.
The Italy-England World Cup game in Rome was in November 1976. There was a game between the two in the US Bicentennial Tournament in summer 1976 when England won 3-2.
England - Italy should have ended 11 vs. 9
Why?
Very unlucky to miss out through goal difference.
Never understood why a manager as good as Revie got it wrong at international level. The all conquering Liverpool team of the time had 8/9 English men in. Just pick them and three others.
Ron Greenwood gave it ago ìn his first match Switzerland 0 - 0 friendly at Wembley - but yeah 74 - 75 stick sniffer Clarke ìn there - just sayin Jimmy Case never got a cap and Ian Callaghan first cap June 66 last one that Switzerland game his 4th and Last .
The best time ever 💓 💖 💕 ❤️
All of this channel's videos are great, but there's a small mistake in this. The first match versus Italy was in '76, not '77.
Thank you for your comment and feedback. We apologize for this mistake.
@@WorldFootballArchive it happens, keep up the good work!
Good job for Italy they didn’t have VAR in those days there’s at least 2 players who would have been red carded
Italian, they kicked you out big time and then, they act like nothing happens or "are you ok, or, sorry, it wasn't my intention... " lol hahahahaha. Terrible.
But to all fairness, I saw I interviewed to Kevin Keegan and said in those years, football was rough in Europe, Yellow cards were very rare.
Only one team in England's group qualified and Italy was in the same group,oh dear. No wonder England didn't make it to Argentina 🇦🇷
it is now Italy not England who will miss the WC twice on the trot.
Italian been italian
Don Revie, should never have left Leeds United for that England job. Jack Charlton, Malcom Alyson, Terry Venables, Brian Clough, Ron Greenwood or Bobby Robson should have got the job instead. Don Revie's departure brought terrible disaster to Leeds United for many years. FA always hated Leeds United !!
I think it made sense for Don Revie to get it given his success at Leeds. Revie was unlucky here as it was a hard group with Italy who were a very very good side and could have won that WC and only 1 could qualify.
@@r4h4al Picking coaches from winning clubs was the problem. Some players like Keegan, Macdonald and Hughes could not adapt to Don's style of play!! Germany's Helmet Schoen, Italy's Enzo Bearzot , Poland's Kazimierz Gorzki were not from winning clubs, but were part of a long term coaching plan ascending from youth to national teams. Anyway, Don Revie was not an England man. He was more suitable for club like Leeds where he had long lasting excellant relationship and trust with the players. Bremner left for Hull when Don left for England in 1975. The continuity was broken. No smooth transition. Brian Clough was no Don Revie, was sacked after 40 days!! Leeds got relegated in 1982!!. A very Sad Day for such a Top Club in the World!!!
@@santhanaraj5863 Excellent post. Helps explain why Gareth Southgate has been the success he has.
@@r4h4al Southgate was a good player then.. But he can't do much because he lacks quality players like Terry Venables had in Euro 1996 Gaza, McMahon, Shearer, Tony Adams. They were of a different class!!! The current lot plays fast but lacks imagination and consistency. They are not good as Spain, Belgium or Italy. Too many foreign players in EPL caused this. Italy faced this in 1980s but Italian FA quickly restricted the number of foreign players and emerged players like, Zola, Barresi, Baggio, Paulo Maldini. Many national teams have declined terribly due to too many foreign players. Even Germany and Netherlands have declined!! Germany went home after round 1 in 2018. That's unheard of!! Every 2-4 years we see a drop in quality. Its a different game now with emphasis on theatrics and faking injuries frequent divings!! And WAR is only helping gambling syndicates to fix matches !!!
@@santhanaraj5863 Some excellent points.
PHIL NEAL, EMELYN HUGHES, DAVE WATSON, TREVOR CHERRY, RAY WILKINS, RAY CLEMENCE (standing) STUART PEARSON, BRIAN TALBOT, KEVIN KEEGAN, MICK CHANNON, BRIAN GREENHOFF (under). One of more unlucky team of England in 70´s. Good players but lacked some class in decisive moments
Oh yeah Every Decisive Moment except the Ities at the Beloved old Wembley .

Shame u cudnt get a better Finland away game..the drag back, dummy, dummy goal from Channon was Roy of the Rovers stuff, lad
You should have picked Clough up, not Revie.
1-0 by Antognoni, was an auto-goal, actually... :-)

hahaaaa remember the eyeties were always dirty cheats growing up and my dad going barmy at the tv and the ref every time they played them and shouldve had 7 players left on in this game
