My old man and his 4 brothers all were there. They stayed for the whole tournament and had a non-stop party. He's passed on now and only one uncle left. But the stories they told me about being one of Ally's Tartan Army were hilarious and a huge part of my growing up.

En Junio del 78, eran las elecciones para la Asamblea Constituyente en Perú. No había todavía transmisiones de TV a colores. Pero los partidos de este mundial tenían su señal colorida, que si alguien tenía un receptor adecuado, podía verlo a colores. Y yo y un grupo de suertudos vimos por primera vez en Arequipa la transmisión a colores de este partido. Fue en las galerías GAMESA, precisamente en E. Concha Fernandez.
Después de todos estos 44 años quiero agradecer a E. Concha Fernandez (que sé no existe más) por haberme permitido gritar, saborear, gozar.. por primera vez a colores, los goles de Cubillas y Cueto.
Yo si lo pude ver en mi casa en un televisor a colores marca Hitachi que un militar se lo vendió a mi papa (QEPD).

That said, Peru had reached the quarter-finals in 1970 (going out to Brazil) with Cubillas scoring five goals. So Scotland really should have given Peru more respect.

Yo siendo Chileno vi jugar a ese Peru de los 70s. Y la verdad ese equipo me ponia muy nervioso cuando jugaba con Chile. En realidad eran muy buenos y en Lima eran inexpugnables, muy dificil de sacar un burn resultado. Ese Peru para mi a sido uno de los mejores...
Anduvo bien en primera fase, solamente. Después cayó ante Brasil 3 a 1 y perdió con Polonia, creo que 1 a 0, quedando eliminado. Finalmente, ya fuera del mundial enfrentó a Argentina, siendo su último partido.
Sí pero nuestro entrenador, Marcos Calderón, hablaba muchas lisuras.

Se noto en el partido anterior contra Polonia donde Peru jugo bien solo el primer tiempo y despues Quiroga los salvo de una goleada y termino 1-0. En el partido con Argentina, Peru jugo sin delantero y con algunos suplentes en la defensa igual así tiro un tiro al palo, el físico solo les duro 20 minutos, despues fue todo Argentina

I remember that match. It was a huge sensation that Scotland should lose to Peru. Scotland should have done better in 1974 and 1978, but for some strange reason they failed.
That being said, Cubillas was back to his 1970 form and scored another 5 goals like he did in Mexico 1970, and Quiroga was very good in this match.

@@meisterlymanu5214 Not necessarily. The experts still had Scotland as favorites but did not see Peru as a cakewalk either. They knew better, they would not be surprised if Peru upset the Scots. The Scots (like their English counterparets) saw the Cup in their hands, anyone outside their bubble as second rate (Peru and Iran) and could go toe to toe with the best of Europe (which, to their credit, they poved by beating Netherlands in an exciting game). That Iran game was their elimination, not the Peru game and Iran could have beaten the Scots had it not been an OWN GOAL given to Scotland (while everyone else trashed Iran by 3 goal differences).
🏴 qualified to World Cups 1974 to 1990. It had difficult groups. However, with the players your team had, it must have qualified to next round at least once. We miss Scotland in the World Cups 😀🏴

En este mundial la apuesta de Marcos calderon por Cesar Cueto y Jaime Duarte como titulares fue un acierto del entrenador el mejor tecnico nacional que tuvimos en la mejor epoca del futbol peruano, Marcos Calderon tenia buen ojo por que era dificil decidirse quien seria titular ya q teniamos en el medio nacional mucha tecnica,grandisimos jugadores un poco indisciplinados pero Calderon supo dirigir, un gran entrenador el mas ganador que se nos fue de este mundo en un desgraciado accidente aereo, una enorme pena.

Decían por lo menos en Semifinales y para muchos peruanos la selección peruana del 82’ era la mejor en su historia incluso mejor del 70, 74 y 78. Después que acabe el mundial de España. Perú Armó un equipo para el mundial 86’ que no fueron al mundial por 1 punto. 6 años mas tarde hubo un accidente en Perú donde fallecieron un grupo de futbolistas exquisitos ( 🙏🏼 que en Paz descansen) talentosos jugadores del club más grande del Perú Alianza Lima, donde se fueron una nueva generación. Ahí empezó la decadencia de Perú para los mundiales, que pudo haber estado para todas las clasificatorias de los 90’s. Perú no fue al mundial después de 36 años no 38

Escocia 2 años antes (1976) se habia coronado campeon de Europa por primera y unica vez en toda su historia, los escoses estaban locos de contentos, se volvieron locos, muy entusiasmados con su seleccion, ellos y otros europeos ponian como serio candidato a Escocia para ganar la Copa del Mundo del 78, viajaron muchos escoceses al mundial, muchos de ellos renunciaron al trabajo, hicieron préstamos, vendieron el auto, otros hasta hipotecaron su casa para poder viajar al mundial de Argentina 1978, querian estar presentes y ver con sus "propios ojos" por primera vez a su seleccion coronarse campeona del mundo, entre ellos se encontraba el famoso cantante Rod Stewart quien era muy aficionado al futbol (habia sido futbolista hasta la categoría juvenil, pero una lesion lo aparto del futbol y se dedico a la musica para felicidad de muchos entre ellos yo), Stewart paro sus giras artisticas para asistir al mundial junto con los musicos de su banda, conto años despues en una entrevista "yo como muchos escoses estabamos seguros q Escocia iba a ganar el mundial, yo en la tribuna abrazado con mi bandera tomando unas cervezas y gritando y alentando a mi selección junto a los chicos de la banda jamas nos íbamos a imaginar q nos iba a ganar, golear y eliminar una seleccion de un pais del q nunca habia escuchado en mi vida, nos gano bien, pero quede muy triste y llorando en la tribuna", Peru tenia una gran equipo y muy buenos jugadores de futbol, hizo una gran primera fase del mundial de futbol de Argentina 1978.

Czechoslovakia won the Euro's in 1976. They beat West Germany. Scotland won the British Home Championship competition and invaded the pitch in Wembley stadium having beat England in the same year. In truth, we had a decent team in Argentina 78 but the preparations for training and the hotel facilities were absolutely amateurish and not fit for purpose. The team bus even broke down from the airport to hotel and had to be pushed by locals. The Manager was a great optimist and talked a good game but he wasn't diligent in his preparation. He didn't even do any reconnaissance on opponents. Arrogant maybe...I think he was naive and living in the past. Modern football had moved on from his playing days. We also had a player sent home for taking a banned substance. The whole episode was a shambles, almost. We did beat the eventual finalists, the Netherlands, 3 - 2 but it was too little too late. Worth watching for a great Scottish goal and a super strike by Rep the Dutch star.
All i remember about this match back in 1978 was reading the news headlines the next day which said, "Los escoceses y holandeses vinieron con cojudeses" meaning Scottish and Dutch tried to mess up with us. I was a kid with no tv at home, and i know the Netherlands did not win Peru either. Great game btw.

@@thebeatnumber Copa do Mundo não é feita somente de jogos entre seleções tradicionais ou favoritas. Irã já empatou com a tradicional Escócia 🏴 em 1978, venceu a hoje frequente participante Estados Unidos 🇺🇸 em 1998 e empatou com a vigente campeã européia na época Portugal 🇵🇹 em 2018
Good win for Peru. Extra time seems to have been optional then. Ref blew up 18 seconds before the normal 45 in the first half, but in fairness played 4 seconds of injury time in the second to make up for it. That still only made up a total playing time of 89:46. These days a world cup game would go on for 110 minutes with 10 minutes of injury time either half. On the other hand, less subs, stopages and players feigning injury back then I suppose, sped the whole game up.
