    Joe Cole one of the most under-rated players England has ever had. I know his career was plagued with injury which is a real shame, but he was a truly outstanding player. So versatile.

      Great comment. I was thinking the same thing. I remember those days we had a problem on the left with hardly any left footed players in the team, but Joe Cole always made me feel good about things when he was present.

      Beckham is the most underrated.. should never have been shunned by England when he still had so much to give.. let's give the young players a chance they say. Whilst Italy had Pirlo, France had Zidane etc. We are weak minded country and make decisions by emotions. Beckham was part of everything..just watch

      I hate to say it. But I think the Falklands is the reason why. It’s completely ludicrous that England vs Argentina hasn’t happened recently. Even a friendly would be great. Argentina are world ranking 1st, and England world ranking 3rd right now. We should meet, even if it means playing on a neutral ground/country.

    I remember an Argentinian manager saying it was always a pity when the two teams met early in a tournament as the tension, energy and passion of both teams invariably meant the winners also went out in the next round due to exhaustion. Just looking at this match - a so-called friendly - and you can see he was right!
    Am English but always had a deep respect for the Argentine players as despite all being millionaires, they never forget their backgrounds and they give all they have in every game for the shirt.

      @@paulhynes170 World cups are weird in that sense, you can have a team that played magnificent during qualifying but a year later the same system just doesn't click, or the players arrive burned out from long seasons. Also many coaches decide to play the same starting 11 from qualifying when is clear that some players aren't at their best. Its all about who's the fittest that month in my opinion.

    Watched in The White Horse pub in Barcelona, packed with ex pats and locals felt like a World cup match and was definitely one of the most memorable "friendly "matches ever

    Remember watching this when i was 15. This was definitely the best performance that this England generation produced under Ericsson. I believed we could win in Germany 2006 after this match. Joe Cole was fantastic when he came on. Steven Gerrard, as ever, was brilliant and never write off Michael Owen, what a natural goalscorer he was!

      @@FredericFreedom Hilarious! That is an easy pass to make. ANY right-footed player playing on the left should be able to make that pass. It's really easy to control the power and curve (when it's low.) However if you're trying to cross it high... Impossible 😄

If you meant people who are European, then this is not true. Ronaldo and Rivaldo both won it in the late 90s, before Owen won his Ballon d'Or. Owen won the Ballon d'Or ahead of Zidane, Raul, Rivaldo, Figo, Totti, Henry, Shevchenko, Beckham and others, who were all in their prime when Owen won it.

    Remember watching this “friendly” at work on a Saturday evening in November I think!! How this era of England players did not win a tournament is beyond me. Also couldn’t beat commentary on the BBC from John Motson & Barry Davies.

      Because, as always, England played brilliantly in the qualifications but as all World Cup finals are played in the summer, the players are exhausted after the Premier League competitions. This might change next year in Qatar, when the WC is going to be played in November and December - when the players are at their best.

    I can remember watching this with my parents and saying to them as full time approached that "even if we lost, it was still a great game and fantastic performance" and then England only went and scored 2 goals and made it possibly the best ever England game I think I've ever seen.

      @@WIM8 He did actually play as a 10 for most of his career, managers did occassionly play him as a deeper playmaker, particulalry later in his career, but he was predominatly played as a classic 10, in a free role with zero defensive responsability or what's known in Argentina as the enganche, literally the hook between midfield and attack.

      And lampard. Just shows Lampard is crap in the England jersey. Yet he starts in the middle instead of Gerrard. The last Euros they all played together showcased this. Sven swapped Gerrard for Lampard starting position and Gerrard ended up playing better, which goes without saying..

      Gerrard was in the top 5 in the world during a period when there were truly great players. He had the ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck, that Gazza&Best did easily, but he seemed to need to be pushed by circumstances to find his top gear. Rooney was at his best then too.

    Even watching the highlights all these years later still got me on the edge of my seat. The atmosphere is incredible for a friendly. It's just so painful to watch England play nowadays when you remember nights like this. They did a similar one against Germany a few years ago which was also a really positive 'friendly' performance, but their performances in competitive games have been horrendous. Even when they win!

      Actually before Southgate England fans were barely in love with their national team. After the 2014 world cup under Roy Hodgson, where we failed to clear the group stage, our first game back was a friendly against Norway and less than half the stadium was full. People can say what they want about GS, but especially since the 2018 world cup, there has been a general shift in support from the average England fan. And during Nations league games against Spain and Croatia in the months after that world cup, the fans were in their numbers supporting the team

      I think England nowadays are set up much better. There is structure in place now with the introduction of St George's Park and England have really benefited from the highly skilled technical players they have produced, by winning under 20 and under 17 World cups most recently as well as the senior team getting to semi finals and finals of Major tournaments in 2018 and 2021
