We have had great moments and very disappointing ones...but for me, this remains the saddest night in our long football history. Last World Cup which I did not watch live due to my young age. It is such a spoil to find this high res video, in its original commentary, to see the football monsters of yesterday battle it out. You can tell how much physical conditioning came along in these 3 decades, look at how exhausted the players before even the 90 minutes are done.

I've seen this match, I was 9... I really loved playing as a goalie. It was my position. I remember being an absolute fan of Walter Zenga, he was a beast at Internazionale back then. When Argentina scored, I remember calling Caniggia every name in the book... but after some years I realize that I was cursing the wrong player. Unfortunate move from Zenga.

But Argentina did not win their group, went to to the North against Brazil and Yugoslavia, and came back to Naples for the semifinal.

If both Argentina and Italy would have won their groups, and kept winning, they would have met in the Final in Rome, not before, not anywhere else. The fact that Argentina did not win their group, put them in a different path, leading to their encounter in Naples for the semis.

I've seen this match, I was 9... I really loved playing as a goalie. It was my position.
I remember being an absolute fan of Walter Zenga, he was a beast at Internazionale back then.
When Argentina scored, I remember calling Caniggia every name in the book... but after some years I realize that I was cursing the wrong player.
Unfortunate move from Zenga.
Header’s are very difficult to defend.
The main problem was that Bergomi let the player cross to Cani.

This is the match Italy did not want to play. They were NOT the home team, in Italy.
Only Maradona could make that happen, and don't think it will ever be repeated.
So it was arranged: if Argentina was first in their group, they would stay in Naples until quarterfinals (as Cameroon did) then go to play the northern semifinal (as England, who eliminated Camerron in QF, did), while Italy would come to Naples (as they did; they won their group).
But Argentina did not win their group, went to to the North against Brazil and Yugoslavia, and came back to Naples for the semifinal.
Had this game been played In Milan different story . I don’t understand how they didn’t play such a game at San Siro knowing they had never lost at that stadium

If both Argentina and Italy would have won their groups, and kept winning, they would have met in the Final in Rome, not before, not anywhere else.

Se jugaron 23 minutos del primer tiempo de la prórroga.(cuando son 15 minutos por lado) 👀 Querían a Italia si o si en la final del mundial. Quitando que el gol italiano fue un claro off side.
