Maradona's second goal against England in the 1986 World Cup was without a doubt the greatest goal in World Cup history. Receiving the ball on his own field near midfield, Maradona marched towards the English goal leaving in his wake English player after English player after English player (five in total) completely destroying them to finish by sweetly dribbling past the oh-so-great English goalkeeper Shilton and softly depositing the ball in the back of the net! Absolute genius!

Carlos Alberto's goal was a masterpiece of individual and team skill. But it was already 3-1 for Brazil with just a few minutes left. The Italians were thoroughly beaten, plus they must have been physically and emotionally exhausted from the epic heavyweight overtime slugfest they had just had in the semis against West Germany. Just look at how Pele had tons of space to receive the ball and make his pass. Bergkamp, on the other hand, scored his goal in the last minute of what was at that point an unbelievably tense 1-1 draw against a great Argentina team that had the upper hand. To this day I can't imagine playing 90 minutes against Argentina and still producing that first touch. So I would rank them - Maradona, Bergkamp, Alberto.

Compared to nowadays they of course had lots of space. But nevertheless this goal is also my favourit. A goal like being planned on a drawing board. Great setup, then an assist by Pelé like on a silver plate and finally the perfect strike by Carlos Alberto with a shooting technique from a textbook.
I guess this has been broadcast before the 2014 World Cup. Otherwise it would, maybe should have included van Persies header against Spain, Goetzes Goal against Argentina and of course Rodriguez' volley against Uruguay.

You can say the same of the tackling of the English players. Nowadays, Maradona would have been on the ground before he even got close to the penalty area. It was almost like the English players were saying, go on, don't mind us, we are just going to pretend we are defending. Next time, use your hands or sniff some coca.

I nominate Mario Goetze's goal against Argentina in extra time in the 2014 World Cup Final that gave Germany its first World Cup in South America. It was an amazing goal to end a spectacular run of wins by the German Team at the 2014 World Cup, not least of which was the dominant 7-1 defeat of Brazil in the semi-final match. I feel you, man. As a Pole, I was absolutely sure there wouldn't be a single Polish goal included. I mean hey, we just finished third twice, not many teams can say that, but who cares, right? We always have to do more to be noticed. I think the selection is a crude mix of goals that you'd expect and that deserve to be on the list, goals apparently chosen mainly to include some exotic countries, goals that are only included to add more British goals (that Charlton goal, absolutely no one is trying to attack him or block his shot in any way or shape), and the #1 choice is a joke, I wouldn't even put it in my top 50 (I know it's kind of legendary, but I really mean it, I don't see anything special about it). In these two games alone we scored at least 3 or 4 better goals:
      czcams.com/video/OjnpPQfJvig/video.html
      czcams.com/video/CIHP8NQX4Pc/video.html
Or what are those two Bulgarian goals doing on this list? I think our goal against Italy in '74 was better than Letchkov's header:

For me, Bergkamp's '98 goal versus Argentina is my #1 choice, because of the control from the De Boer pass. As great as the Carlos Alberto and Maradona goals are, they were much more technically precise. Because of the lack of "polish" on it, to me it suggests Bergkamp would mis-hit it. I went to the 1970 WC and saw every game Brazil played. Pele's header to the ground, Gerson's long balls and winning goal in the final, Rivelino's free kicks and dribbles, Tostao (the white Pele) involved in every play weaving here and there, Clodoaldo's domination of the midfield - they were tested before the WC and determined to be the lowest ranked on physical training! Gerson smoked, and hated to run. Tostao had just returned from injury. They dismissed their coach and just played for the love of it. Every one of these players was the best in his position in the world. Even players like Ademir Da Guia could not make the team. The goalie was the worst in the WC, so they determined to not allow any shots to go against him by keeping the ball to themselves. However, Piazza and Alberto were the greatest of defenders. The Brazilian league was the greatest league ever. Besides Maradona's goal (which was reproduced exactly by Messi in Barcelona's shirt), Didier Six' and Cambiasso' s goals were my favorite.

Brian McBride's opening goal for United States against Mexico in the round of 16 in 2002. United States wins a free kick in the Mexico half, quickly re-starts, Claudio Reyna avoids a tackle, goes towards the end line, and finally gives the ball up to Josh Wolff; Wolff one touches the ball to McBride, who's wide open, and goes from right to left, slightly lower in terms of aim.
