      When I was in grade school, I had a western style flute for band class. I didn't learn how to actually get it to make proper sound for a week because I missed the first couple of classes and the teacher refused to help catch me up. Nothing wrong with being a little slow on getting where you need to be.

      @@h3lblad3 Teacher sounds like a dick to be honest.
      I have deformed thumbs as a birth defect. One reason I care about playing the instruments I own are cause he, and a few others actually took the time to teach me ways to play with my thumbs as they are, OR even alter the instrument with makeshift grips and stuff to help me.
      Good teachers teach; great ones inspire.

      @@kennyg7071 I loved it. It's an interesting look at how the public perception of someone doesn't always match up with reality, while also being a beautifully shot, high production value drama with lots of interesting characters and fight sequences.
      However, it is made for a Chinese audience. As a Westener I found it tricky to follow in places as I didn't know all the cultural references and struggled to keep track of the fact everyone has three names. I did have to check the wiki more than once.
      It's not going to be for everyone, but it's worth giving it a go, for sure.

    I will use my waking stick all day long and I won’t say a word about it being a flute .

    Received my dizi flute yesterday, all the way from China to Sweden. A D key. I really love this flute. I have tried to play on both my mums recorder and her western concert flute but I never liked the sound and way of playing at the recorder and didn`t liked the buttons on the concert flute. The dizi flute is just the way I want it! When I have learnt this one I may be able to start play the other flutes. I am a total beginner and your videos really help a lot. I think I've started to learn how to blow in it but still I sometimes get that hissing, whistling sound. More practice and learning the notes and I hope I can try out some beginner songs soon. I will try to search for some flute teachers too. I guess I won´t find anyone playing the dizi flute but maybe it could work as well with a teacher that learns out for concert flute?

    Very helpful. Thanks much! -- Exactly what I have 'diagnosed' from my beginner's experience: that I have to concentrate on exact direction the air goes over, and into, the hole, and that I have to apply proper breathing for keeping the sound enough long and balanced. I also noticed that If I 'consult' a mirror it is easier for me to find proper position and shape of lips. And, finding this tutorial, I am so happy that I was on the right path in learning, following my sense of how it should be. Being that I am in love with Tao, it makes me even happier. So I am subscribing, expecting even more beautiful and useful things. (The dizi I am training on I have made myself, in A, following some tutorial, and using some old walking bamboo stick. It has beautiful sound I adore, when you play correctly.)

    I’ve had this dizi for several months now and could only make honking geese sounds, sometimes. Today, I copied you, and sound came out. I will need to do this every day until it sounds more like yours. I had the original Covid in December 2019 and it is STILL difficult to hold a sustained breath for long. I used to sing, but discovered that covid killed my breath control. Why did I pick a wind instrument to learn??? Nevertheless I will persevere. I’m Asian, I should know how to play at least one instrument!!! Thank you for this lesson. I’m definitely still bothered by covid-lungs because after ten minutes I am dizzy and light-headed. Your instruction to, "Kiss the hole... then role it down" was absolutely BRILLIANT!
    But at first I was giving you (in the video) a very odd look... "Kiss the hole?!? He really does love his flute a lot!!" ..... but I soon understood haha! And this gave me the best sound I have ever made. With no fingers on holes HAHAHA!! Not yet, I still sound like a dying cat once I start to put my fingers down.

    Great videos man! I've been able to pick up a wind instrument for the first time and actually get sound out of it! The tape is awesome too! My Dizi came with peach resin and the membranes, but every time I put it on, it sounds more like a kazoo. Like the membrane is flapping. You should make a tutorial on how to put the di mo on the Dizi!

      +melissa tasks it is not that easy for sure, but at least you are doing something to make a bit of sound! Keep trying! Try to not blow so hard, because real playing is really not going to consume a lot of air, it's supposed to be soft and relaxing, not like you need to kill the damn thing to make it sound lol!

    Is it really possible to learn how to play the dizi on your own via vids & books? Or to really learn, do you need a proper one to one tuition i wonder? Don't know if it's true but i heard their was a legendary dizi player who was completely self taught.

      Just an amateur. :)
      Compared the flute to a recorder. When I play the recorder I hear clear note sound, when I play dizi I hear the note sound + not so loud but noticeable blowing sound. It is normal for flutes to have this background blowing noise?

    • @Chiinnature
      @Chiinnature  Před 7 lety

      um, a "bit" of blowing noise is normal for the beginning, but as you go on you won't have it when you adjust your angle a bit better, but a bit (bit) of wind noise is normal, since your air is indeed crushing the edge of the hole to make sound, and that is part of the nature of these flute. When you record into PC, add some rerverb, the whole thing is beautified, lol

      @Chiinnature  Před 10 lety

      Hey nice!! Let me know if you made a vid!! Glad you can make sounds! That is a very good start already! Most people will have a hard time blowing a note at first! It's true, learn some DIY songs first and then move to some old songs, it will be nicer to start with slow pace songs that require less tricky fingerings! Maybe play a scale and upload it to let me see your dizi!

    • @Kinetic1423
      @Kinetic1423 Před 10 lety

      I will upload a video eventually, but i still have some problems playing the low notes on the dizi. Compared to the Pan flute you have to blow a lot weaker on the dizi so I'm still getting used to blowing the low notes. It's very difficult playing the scale in one go because you have to blow so differently from the high pitch notes to the low. But I will keep practicing and upload a video probably tomorrow :)
