    I'm a saxplayer trying to get a good sound on the flute. One thing I think is hard is not sounding tense when playing high notes. I can hit them, but they are not relaxed and really nice to listen to. Another thing is playing soft or loud. All my notes except from the really low ones are pretty loud. Thx for these videos!

    This is an excellent, informative video. Last night I won an eBay auction for a used Selmer Aristocrat flute. I've played clarinets (and string bass, but that's irrelevant to the point I'm making here), but took up a whole range of brass instruments over the past couple years. I'm getting a flute because it's played differently from the other instruments. However, I have a slight overbite, so blowing at the angle taught here comes naturally to me, and I've noticed that in some ways playing a flute is more similar to playing brass than it does to reed instruments, in two ways: 1) nothing (such as a reed) is added to the metal hardware of the instrument, and 2) the position of the lips is somewhat similar, although looser with the flute because air must pass between the lips rather than causing them to vibrate. During one lesson on a trombone, I was told to "spit out" a note...and I heard a somewhat similar mention earlier in this video.
    BTW, in another video that dealt with helping children choose a musical instrument, there was a comment that someone having a "teardrop" shaped upper lip is not a good candidate for playing a flute--I suspect the airstream would be split in the middle to be diverted to either side.
    FWIW, I also have a Chinese suona, which 'counts' as a double-reed instrument.

    Hi Teach. I noticed that your lips do not line up with the center of the hole in your flute. The 'point' (the lateral middle of your upper lip) seems to be lining up on the right side of the opening of the flute, as if you're kinda playing the flute on the left side of your mouth. Check out this video, timeline at 11:33 and you will see that the left of center side of the opening in your lips has that oval shape, while the right side is closed, any reason for that?

  • @Phrostfox
    @Phrostfox Před 2 lety

    Many thanks!
    Took me some time to get a tone going. This really helped a lot!
    My lips are quite full and I am still struggling with consistency to get the placement right. It feels like I have to blow much harder than what I am supposed to do in order to get a tone. Is there a minimum "strength" of airflow in order to get a tone? Or does that vary from flute to flue?

    • @laurenteachesflute3583
      @laurenteachesflute3583  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello there! It shouldn't really take too much air to get a tone, if it feels like you're using a lot it's likely because too much air is going out in front of you instead of into the flute. Perhaps the tone hole is too far away from your aperture so you could try pushing the lip plate up a little bit so that you're able to get more air into the flute OR if you're too rolled out you might try rolling in a little bit to cover 1/3 of the embouchure hole with your bottom lip. After this adjustment, angle the air lower towards your left elbow and blow a steady stream of air without forcing. Truthfully it's difficult to help without seeing you but I Hope this helps you some!

    • @Phrostfox
      @Phrostfox Před 2 lety

      @@laurenteachesflute3583
      I have been practicing for a few days and discovered something, that I thought to share.
      When I baked bread yesterday, I blew for fun across the counter, that had flour on it, with my go-to embouchure to see which angle I have. What I noticed is that I blow with two distinct air streams, pointing out to each side.
      When I compare my embouchure with yours, yours looks like a rice grain while mine is more like the shape of a "m". My top lip bulges out slightly in the center, a bit like a tear drop, which I am pretty sure splits my air stream.
      So tried to off center my mouth position and I did get a much clearer sound and don't need to blow nearly as hard to get a tone. Thou, now it's really hard with consistency instead x_x.
