    Hello, a few days ago I found a flute on sale at a market. Impulsively, I bought it. I followed various on-line teachers without success and for forty-eight hours I struggled to make any sound other than gasping, puffing, swearing all of which my wife found very amusing. Then I found your channel and your explanation helped enormously. I can now play two notes and my spirits rose accordingly. Upon hearing my two, clear notes my wife entered my room, took one look at the screen, saw you and exclaimed, “Barrie, at 86 years you will never change, I knew there would be a beautiful woman somewhere... Kind Regards, Barrie.

    Thank you for your great advice! I am learning Chinese bamboo flute, watch other CZcamsr and read book, but the result was on and off. Came across your video by accident and give it a try, it is spot on, I made a very loud clear sound from the first try and every consecutive one. The best point is the one about blowing toward the edge and let the air split, which failed to mention by other chinese youtuber and books.

    • @LearnFluteOnline
      @LearnFluteOnline  Před 4 lety +2

      Thanks for the question - there's some special technique you need to make that transition smoothly. I haven't seen you play, but I'm guessing you can learn to 'drop and relax' - this will help your airy sound especially if you can press plenty of air between a flatter lip shape. I can help you with it even more at LearnFluteOnline.com . I'm glad you're working on sounding great on your flute. It's a beautiful instrument. :) - Rebecca

    • @LearnFluteOnline
      @LearnFluteOnline  Před 4 měsíci

      It is tricky to move to making a sound on your entire flute at the beginning. Spend some time looking in the mirror as you play and make a sound on your headjoint. Then put the whole flute together and watch yourself again. Can you notice any differences? My guess is that your lip is not in the same place or your air stream is not blowing in the same direction exactly. Best of luck!

    We don't have the same flute :(

  • @christophertsiliacos8958

    👍 👏 One can even play “Mary had a Little Lamb” with just using the head joint. 😉 🎶

      Totally - that's in the next lesson. We definitely play some good exercises and a few little tunes with just our head joint. Fun! -Rebecca

    When I try doing this it won't make a sound no matter what I do its just my air

    • @LearnFluteOnline
      @LearnFluteOnline  Před rokem

      Keep trying. I'm sure as you experiment with where to blow your air, you'll find the right spot. Be sure the flute hole is lined up directly under your lip hole. It's also important to make sure the hole is pointed to the ceiling instead of pointed towards your face. Keep it up and then come get even more instruction. I'll help you. - Rebecca

    It may just be me but why is my flute not making any sound? Please help

      Hmm, I'm sorry you're having trouble. If you are not able to make a sound on your headjoint there may be a problem with the cork inside? However, if you believe your flute is in top condition, watch this video again and keep practicing. Happy fluting! -Rebecca

      Hi, it’s okay you’ll get it. You want to experiment with the angle you’re blowing. Practice the spit method I show you by just blowing onto your hand in front of you first. When you feel you’re getting a consistent “thwooo” then you can start working on your head joint. Keep your face nice and straight and not looking down into the flute. Let me know how it goes! Should it be kind of a pttttoey as if I’m gonna spit or call someone’s idea bonkers, “oh ptoooooey!?” My throat hurts from all the trying and I just can’t get it. Am I supposed to make a whistle into or across the hole or is it strictly air I’m giving it? I keep flipping back and forth too cuz you don’t show which way to hold it and I’m completely idiotic…is it mouth-right hand-left hand or mouth-left hand-right hand? Even if I pull up another video I don’t know how the camera flips or doesn’t flip the image.

      I always tell my students to pretend they have a tiny piece of rice at the end of their tongue, then spit. Sometimes, I even have them start with real pieces of rice before trying to make a sound on their flute. Maybe this is something you can practice to get the right feeling down.
      As for the way to hold the head joint of the flute in this video. The end cap you can twist should be held by your left hand. Then your right hand will cover the open whole at the other end.
      I hope this helps!

      @@LearnFluteOnline bought a flute for 8.99 at goodwill cuz I’m already a harpist and pianist of 30 years. Just couldn’t do the flute though but it turns out, my lower teeth are false and I’ve read several people say it’s impossible to create a flute embouchure with a denture on bottom and took it out and Whoa is it true. So guess I’ll be finding another new instrument. Just fyi in case it ever happens again with someone you’ll know. Thank you so still though! Even a dentist confirmed. :(

      Great question, Brian. Thanks for asking. There are a few different tonguing styles, and this is one of them. It's called the "front tongue" method. Have you tried it yet? IT's a perfect way to learn how to use your air stream and get a nice round sound right away. It's how many people (including professionals) use their tongue. There are definitely place and time to use other styles as well. Things to think about. Thanks again for the comment. Have fun with your flute! -Rebecca

      I am a band director who loves using your videos, but this is the one thing that I do not use of yours. Can you tell me more of why you prefer it for your students and for advanced students? Does it help the sound? It seems more labored (probably because i do not practice this way). Thoughts?
      Thanks.
