    90s sitcoms didn't mess around when it came to delivering an important message. Especially the shows with predominantly black cast members. So many powerful scenes/episodes were produced. This one right here always spoke to me.

    back when this show originally aired, it must of had a great impact. But looking at it now, over 30 years later, is any part of correct? pneumocyctis pneumonia , is not sexually transmitted. Its an infection of the lungs. and it is not fatal. If you stop doing whatever is causing the pneumonia your body and clear itself of the infection with no outside help.
    She is not dead, she is standing right there. and she is not even sick. she should choose life and truth, and not base her life on fear and lies.
    according to the CDC over 7000 women have received an HIV diagnosis in 2016. according to the U.S. Census Bureau the population of the USA was 325,719,178 people as of 2017. I could not get the 2016 numbers but they should be very close. 58.2% of that population is female. That give us a population of approximately 189,568,562 women.
    assuming that everyone who get HIV dies from AIDS (and that is a very big assumption). we would have a death rate of 7000/189,568,562 which equals 0.00003692595. If you round this number off to the nearest thousandth you get ZERO. This is a death rate of zero. the death rate for the USA is 8.33 per 1000. or 0.0833.
    in order for this to be a disease that merit national attention, the death rate for the disease has to greater, and not just greater, it has to be a whole lot greater then the regular death rate of the population. This is imaginary death rate: it is imaginary because everyone (nor anyone) dies from HIV, so the death rate is a lot smaller then this. But if everyone did die from HIV, then 0.00003692595 is so much smaller then 0.0833, That there is nothing to worry about and this show is just creating fear.

    This is a perfect example of why A Different World was often criticized for being way too preachy. This episode made me feel like I was just being beaten over the head. I don't think it handled the issue of Aids good at all. I remember one time In Living Color did this skit of A different world called "A different message" The skit opened with the intro and theme song but they were saying "there's a lecture every minute. from the homeless to the vote. It's a different message and we'll shove it down your throat."

      +Jazlyn Desiree But you didn't think it was overdone how they made the character working in the lunch counter at the college. If I had HIV I would feel working around other other peoples food wouldn't be the best job. She could have had many jobs but of course because it was "A Different World" they had to have her working a job like that. Plus we could have seen the character more than just a few episodes. If the show was really brave they would have kept the character around more than that. But I understand maybe the network didn't want that. But I think there was something very self congratuatory on Debbie Allen's part about this storyline.

      +joeb267382 I'm really LATE, but I just felt the need to reply. I feel this episode was done correctly. Although Josie worked in the kitchen, it was never known if she actually cooked or just took orders and cleaned off the tables. And if Josie had been in other episodes, it would have bought the comedy part of the show down. A different world was about making people laugh and also show what really goes on what African American students and lifestyles that they face. Plus, Josie probably left Hillman, considering that she wasn't there anymore.

    • @joeb267382
      @joeb267382 Před 8 lety +2

      Tyra Smith I do think A Different World would regularly beat the audience over the head with its message shows which was pretty much every show. I remember one time Michael Moye who created Married With Children said that a sitcom wasn't the place to tackle serious topics. I wonder what he would have thought of A Different World. Also Winifred Hervey, who worked on the first three seasons of Fresh Prince of Bel Air said that she hated doing message shows. She said she believed certain things were very complicated and to try to take on that issue in a half an hour sitcom sort of cheapened it. I think A Different World was a perfect example of what she meant.

    • @tyrasmith4137
      @tyrasmith4137 Před 8 lety +11

      joeb267382 I really don't think so. I mean look at the date rape episode, It doesn't have to be a two-hour special to get the point across. When Dwayne and Ron were locked up with those white boys and they both explained their reasoning for not liking each other, it got the point across without it being cheesy. When Gina was abused by her boyfriend. These episodes are what make " A Different World" a classic and Debbie Allen was very brave for doing it and doing it RIGHT.

      @yhasmanknight1908 Před 8 lety +1

      +joeb267382 Right this kind of material should NOT be used on a comedy show. Another example would be the All in The Family episode titled "Edith s 50th birthday where she was nearly raped and the the audience was laughing at it. Like nothing is funny about rape and shouldn't have been used in a sitcom
