  • Surviving in the Wild for 5 Days with Zero Experience
I have dreamt of wilderness survival since I was a kid so I wanted to test if it was possible for an everyday man to do it. I did 0 preparation for this survival experience and naively thought I would thrive at it. I got the help of world-class survivalist Jordan Jonas (winner of Alone) and took to the North American wilderness to learn how to survive on my own for 48 hours.

    ⭐ About Travel Beans:
Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
    What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. If you enjoy this kind of content we'd recommend checking out our Italy Road Trip series, USA vanlife series and our Japan in a Tiny Van series as well as our UK vanlife content.
Our time spent overcoming depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. We love sharing the highs and lows of our trips through our videos and hope to spread a little positivity and light to all of the beautiful people who take the time to tune in and watch each week!

Dude! You killed it! I’ve been backpacking for a long time, and I always need to drop about 25lbs and hike or treadmill at least 3-5 miles per day for a few weeks to get into shape. You literally walked out of an RV and onto a serious trail with serious mileage AND you needed to find your own food? I’m pretty impressed!

As a former tent-camper/backpacker/semi-survivalist, I can attest that the situation you were in was not a "hard-but-fun youtube challenge" situation but an actual life or death type of situation. I was silently begging Jordan not to leave you on your own and of course he smartly stayed with you. There is absolutely no shame in this. What a valuable learning experience! Thank you for sharing this with so many others!!!

I’m so relieved that you ultimately realized you DID SUCCEED!!
You hunted and gathered-you found nourishment!
You started a fire under damp conditions AND not by using a 9:00 lighter! You used friction, sparks and tender tinder.
You hiked during in tense heat. Sometimes just walking to my car is unbearable and energy sapping.(I live in Texas)
And you did it all with a smile on your face…a few down trodden moments but you pushed forward. You never gave up!!
Congratulations!! YOU DID IT!! YOU DID IT!!🎉🎉🎉🎉

Wow, Alex. Many people wouldn't do anything close to what you did. I know I would have a hard time getting past my fear of predators in the wilderness. Years ago, I took part in a rappelling course for one day and rappelled down a 120-foot high vertical rock formation. It was an amazing experience, such adrenaline. I went back up to the top to rappel down again, because some of my classmates were doing that and I didn't want to feel left out. When I started near the edge, I was suddenly overcome with panic and froze. I decided not to go and backed up onto the rock. I was disappointed in myself, but the instructor said to me, "There is no reason to be disappointed. You made a rational decision in the face of fear." I realized my second attempt was all about me being competitive, instead of letting myself feel great about my first rappel down. That was back in 1989 and I never forgot it. Making a rational decision in the face of fear/exhaustion/hunger, etc., rather than trying to fulfill a fantasy, is an accomplishment. So, you didn't do 48 hours completely alone in the wilderness, but you learned more about yourself, your limits, when it's appropriate to push past your limits, and when it is not. Valuable lessons!

I myself, am an English expat living in soaring heat, so commend your efforts immensely, as most of us are just not made for those climates. The main thing here is that you not only survived, but made lifelong memories that will stay with you forever and created some fantastic content for us all. These experiences make us appreciate life and the things we sometimes take for granted. Enjoy the rest of your adventure with your amazing family and we all look forward to your future uploads. Peace out buddy ;-)

I think most people who don't live in the mountains, including sea-level-dwelling Brits, have no real understanding of how both the altitude of the Rockies and the closer proximity to the sun can negatively affect them. Acclimatization, proper fitness, and well-ventilated sun-protecting clothing are vital. But, good effort, Alex, and welcome to the Rockies.

So many of the contestants on the show alone went home because they couldn't catch fish . They were people with extensive survivalist training.
There were also many warnings at that time about hiking in that heat , and you did so well .
You have the heart of an adventurer as does Emma. I know there will be many more adventures to come . On this trip you got to experience some amazing things , mostly don't wonder too far from a food source 😂. Seriously though well done !

I got emotional at the end when you talked about becoming your childhood hero. What an awesome dream. But what you accomplished here over these several days is badass and impressive. • @karensmith9662
    @karensmith9662 Před 9 měsíci +6

You definitely did not “fail”! You not only had an active dialogue with your childhood dream; you actually took steps to experience an adulthood version of it! For a reality check, you were experiencing unusually extreme heat for Colorado plus altitude (which coming from the UK, even if you’ve been in Colorado for a few weeks, would be challenging)! I’ve been hiking for years on a weekly basis at 8000-12000 ft, and what you accomplished in 4 days would be difficult for me!

And while berries are a nice snack, they aren't a meal. So I think you did OK. And catching fish is always hit or miss, even with proper fishing gear, let alone your makeshift kit. This is definitely not a fail! And no, this is no polite civil talk. You are my hero!
Stop being such a Brit and please pat yourself on the back for all those amazing things you achieved: you went out of your comfort zone, as an unprepared man, managed to start a fire full of stuff with dew on it, caught a big fish with primitive tools (even though it escaped in the end), trekked for miles up and donwhills under a scorching heat, you have learned a ton of surviving skills and tricks, you connected with your inner child, you persevered even though being underfed and with no calories enough to have energy.
Dear Alex, this is clearly not a failure, this is a win and a learning curve and full of meaningful experiences you will be able to remember for the future and even teach to your son some day. It is a clear win, as you proved yourself, you are definitely able to put yourself out of a comfort zone, just to try and experiment, and are able to learn.

Trust us, you didn't fail Alex. You achieved a lot in the short time you were out there. You can try your best in life at some things and still fail, that's just how life is sadly. You didn't fail in our eyes, you did amazing and it's easy to not focus on the things you did get right.

Being hungry is never failure, there’s been times I’ve gone without so the rest of my family get all they need and can tuck into bed with as full of a tummy as they need. It’s okay to work so hard at something and have little things like that happen. That is not failure buddy. This was a success you did what you set out to do. Nothing will ever go to plan. Chin up, you did great!

The United States is such a large country with vast amounts of wilderness in many different climates. One could spend years just exploring. No need to beat yourself up, At least you tried and that is not a failure. We humans in civilized societies have really become spoiled.

You only fail if you didn't make it to your final destination , there is no failure when you just accomplish how to survive especially knowing you could get berries 🍒 if you eat something it's a start ❤ be safe super excited for you. I fished countless times never caught a thing it took 5 trips to be able to catch a fish 🐠 I could never even try what you did even with a guide . Cheers to you for trying ❤️ ❤.❤❤❤
