Life in the Coldest place on earth, the region of Yakutia (Republic of Sakha), Siberia, Russia, & the Worlds coldest city, Yakutsk. We traveled to Yakutsk in the middle of winter to find out how people here survive in the toughest climate in the world. Little did we know, we would manage to time it so perfect that we would actually arrive during the coldest day in the last 20 years (-63'C / '81.5'F).
The lowest air temperature ever recorded in this region is -96°F (-71°C). The coldest town is Oymyakon, which is also in Yakutia, Siberia.
Life up here in the coldest city and region on planet earth is tough, and winter is long, however, people have lived here for centuries. The Yakut (Sakha) people have called this region home for generations and their unique culture & attitude to life has helped them thrive here in cold tundra of Yakutia, Siberia.
Join us, as we explore one of the coldest & unique places in Russia, during the coldest day in recent history!

I have so much respect for anyone living there
Hi what's up can you be my friend 😅
@@arielchattoforasteros5550 no
Hmm, maybe I'll like it there. Don't if I can withstand living in such a cold environment but I do know that I hate being in hot weather
... and yet, it's home for nearly 1,000 residents, who wait until Summer time with its 87degrees (I didn't find the degrees sign...🙄).
Let me explain a little. When they say that Russia is a very cold country, this is only partly true. It's only cold outside. But we don't spend a lot of time outdoors: 5-10%. We spend 90-95% of our time indoors: home, work, school, university, gyms, swimming pools, theatres, cinema, museums, clubs, etc. It is very warm and comfortable there: 23-25 degrees Celsius. You can wear a T-shirt and shorts, and you will be warm. Russia has huge amount of gas, oil, coal, so heating is round-the-clock and very cheap.
I live in Europe. We don't sleep with hats on. There is no place for propaganda under this wonderful clip. You have gas and coal, but not all of Russia is gasified, and you know it very well. But these facts have nothing to do with the clip.
This video isn't really about Russia though is it?
Or the energy in Europe 😂
Which you're incorrect about anyway, but thanks for trying 👍🏻
Поганые содомиты Европы однозначно невыдержат очищающее пламя холода...
Sakha Republic occupied by Russia
Ugly and depressing town
Amazing, I couldn't imagine living in such a climate. It's -2 here in the Netherlands and I'm already looking forward to spring.
석유 가스가 나오지 않았다면,,,,,러시아는 존재하지 않았을 탠데,,,,,,석유가스가 나오는게 인류에겐 축복만은 아닌것 같네요!
Ironically, wetter oceanic climates can feel colded than drier continental climates at the same temperature. Victoria, BC in Canada is absolutely bone chilling at -2, while -10 in Calgary, Alberta is quite tolerable.
I live in Seattle. -2 to +7 here is miserable. A cold damp wind which tears the heat out of you. Having been to Russia and experienced -40 for days on end it's actually better in my opinion.
@@Scrat335Yes, it feels different in Siberia. I found -50C there and was scared. And I went to the city to check myself. I could cover my cigarette and smoke without gloves quite normally. But for technology, the frost is real.
I have always wondered how did they ever build such massive and complete cities with such severe temperatures. I am amazed by the people who live there.
you amazed.. heard about a war, launched by russia?
who the fck wants to live there? xD I mean how desperate u have to be.
It's Adaptation sir. The people out there wont be comfortable in other tropical regions...
they built them in summer 🤣🤣🤣
Все эти города на крайнем севере России строили политические заключенные
I’m blown away. It’s amazing how, regardless of the weather, we find comfort in the small things.
czcams.com/video/0z9y3DmgOH0/video.html
Мне, например, очень жалко людей, которые живут в жарких странах или в пустыне, где очень мало воды. Тем не менее эти люди приспособились к такому климату, любят свои родные места. Вот так же здесь.Без настоящей якутской зимы мне некомфортно.
😊😊
haha I bet youre blown away by the hospitals that get bombed in Ukraine.
Alcohol and sex?
10:55 You know that feeling you get watching someone walk along the edge of an extremely tall building? That's how I felt watching these guys submerging themselves in that icy black water. Truly horrific.
Sick to the stomach? 😬❤️
I can't believe they don't get hypothermia and die.
l’ appel du vide - the call of the void
At first I thought it was a hot bath
The citizens who live there- amaze and inspire me- hardships most of us would say - enough. But so warm-hearted and thriving!!!
To add- I've watched a lot of vids on Yakutia- the people are always so heart warming and upbeat!!
Museum of the permafrost says it all. As somebody who loves summer, this is absolutely mind numbing you have a museum essentially highlighting crazy extreme cold.
Salute to Yakutians and Siberians.. im from a tropical south east asian country.. Malaysia 🇲🇾where its average temp is 30°C.. sunshine all year round, very hot, humid and tropical rain storms from Nov to March.. Thick lush jungle everywhere.. but iceworks has its attractiveness, being cold and all that.
I live in a humid subtropical climate in the USA. I love the cold!! I don’t like the stuff that can happen to you if things go wrong in the cold but I’d much rather be colder than hot. In the heat you can only take off so much clothing before you will be arrested 😂😂😂. In the cold you can layer as much as you want. I don’t think I’d like to be as cold as the city in the video though.
@@laikanbarth that sounds pretty intense! Can I visit sometime?
Interestingly, these cold continental climates, when they warm up in summer, are often plagued with swarms of flying insects such as black flies and mosquitos, which tend to drive the residents to their wits end. I guess the insects are more aggressive as they only have a short time during the year to reproduce.
it’s not that hard to live there. i’ve been living here my whole life and i’m used to these winters. i can’t imagine a winter without -60 and fog. it’s like a part of winter for us. we rarely experience wind in the winter that’s why it’s easy to manage this climate 😅
Try living in 48c. You're adapted for that weather most ppl arent. Just like you wouldn't last in Arizona. It is hard to live there if you aren't used to it
@@jamal9613 exactly!
@@jamal9613 most of my winters were -30 and summers +30 . U just adapt to it.
Is it true when it’s this cold you can hear peoples conversations over 100 yards away?
You have internet there?
Can we just take a second to respect the people that bared that weather to build this wounderful town and the people in in, just wow.
I wouldn't say respect. I'd say they need sone convincing of the errors of their ways to see the light and get the hell out.
They build in the Summer,
Going skiing in Oslo at -21c and experience how that was. I have the respect for these people, doing their daily tasks at -50c and lower
Great video. Yakutia for me is one of the most interesting and wonderful places in Russia. Incredibly brave and good people.

Sing unto the LORD with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God:
Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains.
He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry.
He delighteth not in the strength of the horse: he taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man.
The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.
Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise thy God, O Zion.
For he hath strengthened the bars of thy gates; he hath blessed thy children within thee.
He maketh peace in thy borders, and filleth thee with the finest of the wheat.
He sendeth forth his commandment upon earth: his word runneth very swiftly.
He giveth snow like wool: he scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes.
He casteth forth his ice like morsels: who can stand before his cold?
He sendeth out his word, and melteth them: he causeth his wind to blow, and the waters flow.
He sheweth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel.
He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them.

So interesting to see how other people live amazing how people get used to and manage to make a life for themselves in such harsh conditions Iove Winter time and the cold but obviously have never been in cold like they live in here thank you for sharing this interesting place with us Best Wishes from Scotland 🏴
When you’re born into an environment and that’s all you know, you cope and you understand what has to be done. These individuals who live here have been doing it for a long time… They know how to handle it and it’s amazing
And in the summer time, these parts of the world which experience extreme cold in the winter can get significantly warm in the summer, with temperatures of 30 C not unknown.
Exactly….it is like the old “country mouse, city mouse” story where each thought their home was fine and safe, whereas the visitor found life there hard and scary. We just are adapted to where we grew up, and know the rules and techniques for our home area.
Bless these strong, hardy people.
Thank you for your curious & brave spirits.
I’m drinking a cup of hot tea to warm up just from watching you guys.
Haha, cheers! ☕️
I also felt cold while I was watching 😅👋🌈✨
Right?! Coffee for me. 🥶
Boiling soup for me and still feel cold even I live in Southern California! 😂😂😂
Same here, except I'm drinking coffee, to these long Pennsylvania nights.
Man, I get depressed when it's below 0°C and cloudy outside. It's interesting that some people are not bothered by the weather that much, because I basically only feel alive when the sun shines lol.
I live in Sweden and feel quite the opposite. I get depressed when Its hot. When Its about 25-30 degrees celsius and sunny I feel really uncofortable. And I dont like warm nights. Up here in Sweden people are more used to 15 minus then 25 plus degrees I think.

That was my first thought. I’d be depressed the entire time. Heck when the time changes and it gets dark early my mood goes down.
Hello from Australia to you both extremely interesting video showing the resilience of these remarkable people.
Human adaptability never ceases to amaze me.
coming from a tropical climate country in Malaysia of South East Asia, the coldest i've experienced was -23 cel in hokkaido peak winter and that was about my tolerance limit to coldness. salute to these guys who live through the winter like it dont bother them.
Trust me it is not your tolerance limit , it was just the coldest you we’ve been !! Your a human your a superhero you could do it .
Hokkaido is the coldest place in Japan , I live in chibaken sosashi 30 minutes to drive to narita Airport
i can tolerate up to -30 degrees, as long as there is NO WIND BLOWN
White folks are in betters moods with in colder climates
try new york coldest is 0 but when its windy id love to be in this Yakutsk w -80 instead
This is one of the best vlog about Yakutsk that I like the most. I have seen several vlogs about Yakutsk but this vlog have answered mostly all my curiosity how life in the city is maintained. Cheers from the tropical country of the Philippines! Very hot and humid here actually now!
Life in the North East of England grinds to a halt if it goes under 0 degrees Celsius 😄 this is fantastic
Haha, having a day off when it snows is a British tradition 😀
The coldest i've experienced was -18 celcius in Pyongyang peak winter, I cant imagine these people live in -60... salute
I was born and live in Yakutia. In winter we have never had -81 degrees, as it says on the cover of the video. In Yakutsk, the maximum reaches -58 ° C, rarely -62 ° C. We have a dry frost, without wind, so this is tolerable compared, for example, with the frosts of Primorsky Krai, where along with low temperatures there is a blizzard, storm, wind.
-81 F° not C
@@Silise-op8qz Yes
@@bebenut123 -62°C is the lowest possible temperature that happens in Yakutsk. And then not always. Usually the temperature ranges between -30 and -49 °C. -30 degrees is already considered warm for the local population
@@bebenut123 Probably you have a windy climate, and we have standing frosts, without wind. Therefore, it is probably tolerable🙂
@@bebenut123 And our winter lasts for six months, in order not to freeze, we have to harvest a lot of firewood in villages where there is no gas heating.
I used to live North Sweden 🇸🇪 town called Kiruna. Temperatures were minus 30 and up. You can get use to the cold weather. And to see the Northern lights, is incredible.
minus 30 its not so cold.) Its normal temperature for many cities in Russia in winter
I think you underestimate what minus 50 or 60 means - a huge difference to minus 30 ; for a European, it simply means that you risk dying every time you stick your nose out of the house.

I am from a Summer country. It is summer in the whole season of the Year.
Other seasons do not last longer than 2 months.
I do not take a bath regularly when the temperature in my country (36) drops to 22 degree celsius.
Seeing that gentleman taking a bath in the lake of ice, it made me see him as an alien.
Those Men going into that freezing water is mind blowing. Where I am right now it is 28 degree's and I was already chilly , but that made me shiver just watching!. That City is pretty cool and interesting.
The freezing water seems warm. it is above 32F.
that freezing water cannot be below 0.
We are dealing with windchill temperatures as low as -40 in Massachusetts in the US. Schools are closed and I worked from home today. Can’t imagine how cold it is there.
We feel for you🤣
If it was -40, in the majority of Russia schools would be closed or wouldn't be mandatory to attend
Wow that is cold! ❄️ In Julia’s home city, which is still Siberia, they also close the schools when the temperature is below -30’c ❤️

What a great insight into life on the Permafrost & showing us how everything has to be above ground; quite the infrastructure. What I noticed was how cheerful the lights/light displays were as you were walking along the ?? downtown area. I have so many questions...but will view your vids to find out more.
We rarely get snow where I live up north 🇬🇧
My favourite weather is snow when we get it , rain & fog .. it genuinely recharges me .
The summer & sun drain my energy .
I was in Alaska last month, saw the Arctic Circle and some other great places but one thing that fascinated me was the architecture and design of the pipeline and how the cold plays a big role but so do the moving plates.
The idea that the pipeline has been built on stilts along with things to allow them to have wiggle room with the movement of the Earth’s surface is incredible; similar to stilts and pipes being built above ground.
Growing up in NDak this video brings me home. We had engine plug-in heaters, and every place had outside plugs. I foresee these returning with the advent of EVs. The wind in the Dakotas is constant and brutal, with windchill temps occasionally well below -70F. Climate change has had extremely noticeable impact, especially on what plants we can garden. You get used to the cold; hockey, skiing, ice fishing. It’s a good life, creating tough, resilient and self confident children and self reliant adults.
Now, THAT is serious cold! What a fascinating video-thank you! I can’t even imagine that kind of cold. The heat, yes! I live in Arizona. The people that live there are simply amazing. Stay warm, you two!

But witnessing the local Yakut people going about their daily lives - from children happily playing in the snow to adults commuting to work - in those unfathomable conditions was genuinely jaw-dropping. Their resilience is incredibly inspiring.
I appreciated the thoughtful context around the generations-deep cultural adaptations that have allowed the Sakha people to carve out an existence in this frozen tundra environment. Everything from their clothing, shelter, transportation and even nutrition is precisely calibrated for survival. Yet their spirits seemed completely unfazed by the hostile cold.
The footage inside people's homes also highlighted the incredible resourcefulness and community bonds that sustain them. From the warm, spacious interiors to family mealtimes, there was such an atmosphere of coziness and cheer despite the bitter world outside their walls.
While the sights and facts around Yakutsk's extreme climate were astounding, it was ultimately the human stories and generational knowledge that made this such a rich, eye-opening experience. You transported viewers to the ends of the Earth to reveal the incredible warmth and vitality of the Sakha culture. An epic journey!
Such a very cold climate , personally I would find it hard to survive but I admire the Yakut people for their stamina and resilience xxx❤❤
incredible how so many people stayed and even thrived, i wouldnt have wanted my family to live in these conditions for long
You should receive a medal something for making this wonderful vlog. The people living there are truly remarkable for their endurance. If I decide to come and visit probably I have to order a spacesuit, I wonder.
Thank you so much! That really means the world 🥰🙏🏼❤️
Thanks for sharing!
Wow! Nicely done!!
stumbled on your channel and I must tell you It makes me miss being able to travel in Russia. I rode a Ural motorbike2000km to Salikard in 2012 in the winter on the zimniks and in 2015 the length of frozen Biakal. For such a cold place I have never met such warm and welcoming people. Tho they all thought we were insane. Thanks for bringing back fond memories of a frozen land,
Thank you so much Eric! Really appreciate it! 🙏🏼 Welcome to the channel ❤️
What an amazing and engaging video, fascinating!! It also demonstrates the astonishing resilience of our species. Being used to living in a warm country, I will struggle to live there though, especially through the harsh winters with temperatures exceeding the scale of the thermometer and the constant dense fog shrouding everything. I actually shivered watching those guys get into the water! Your pure enjoyment of touching those snowy trees warms one's heart Julia, very special. I cannot wait for the rest of this series, thanks so much and lots of love ❤❤
Thank you so much Johan! That means the world!! 🙏🏼❤️ It is such a special place in so many ways 🥰 and honestly, I could touch those trees allllll day 😀 Lora of love ❤️
♥️
Ek stem saam!
Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely.
The LORD doth build up Jerusalem: he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel.
He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.
He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.
Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.
The LORD lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground.
Praise ye the LORD.
@@MattandJulia Minus 60 degrees celsius is the maximum temperature that can be there. WHY ARE YOU LYING ? To get more views? What's wrong with you ?
It makes me thankful to come from where I do. 35oC in summer and -5 in winter. Not too bad.
coś pięknego, to jest życie, tak można żyć
This morning, 2/4/23, there was an arctic blast in the northeast, and here in coastal Connecticut, USA, the temperature dropped to -4°F with a -20°F wind chill (-20°C, -29°C). It was the coldest air temperature I’ve ever felt on my skin. It actually doesn’t feel that bad, as long as you have a hat, a big jacket, thick pants, thick boots, and thick mittens. It felt good actually.
That's a continental dry cold! You want to see what the same front feels like, after picking up moisture off the ocean going over Newfoundland!!!
@@harryyoung7076 I agree, humidity makes cold, and heat, feel worse. -20°C with 40% humidity feels colder, but at the same time more pleasant than 2°C with 90% humidity.
Welcome Yakutia
I loved this and am looking forward to seeing more, it was so well made.
I live in the Ural region, where the temperature can drop to -20°C -25°C or, rarely, to -35°C. However, -50°C -70°C is something truly incredible, even for those living in Russia.
I remember returning home from Christmas in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The temperature at the airport the day we left was -41 C.
There is a big difference between Dry cold and wet cold. I worked with a Gal who came from North Dakota and it was -2 degrees in the PNW and she was freezing and I asked her how can you be cold as it is sometimes -54 degrees there and she said " In North Dakota it is a dry cold you get cold on the outside but here with the moisture you are cold right down to the bones."
Same here in Colorado. Its so dry here thats its not as bad as the east coast where its that chill to the bone cold
Yep. I went from Calgary to Vancouver to train some workers. Taxiing in at Vancouver airport I was looking out the window and laughing at the ground crews all bundled up at -11 C. (Thats a borderline light jacket day in Calgary) Then I spent a couple hours with them. Same story
That’s why jumping in the cold water has more effect than standing on dry land, even if the air temperature of the dry land is the same as temperature as the water.
Completely agree. I grew up in this midly cold by 100% humid climate city and it honestly gets as foggy as England with Silent Hill combined. It hurts your bones and certainly no clothes, unless waterproofed and warm enough, can save you. I moved. I no longer suffer 🤣 but I go there once in a while and keep thinking of how I survived my life there. I need a blanket all day 🤣. BTW this is a Mexican city so a lot of people don't believe me but it's true ☝️😬
Agreed. Colorado 7 degrees and Oklahoma 7 degrees are two completely different climates 😂
As someone who lives in an area that gets below freezing a handful of times a year, this is mind boggling. Would love to experience it one day though!
That is why we Desperately Need the Global Warming, Because it is Absolutely Not connected with the Global Pollution of the atmosphere .
Добро пожаловать к нам в Сибирь! 😊
at least they have good real food making them going strong. in here 🇨🇦 this year we have few weeks without the sunshine seems like years without it….became very depressed & weak
This is my absolute nightmare ...
By the way: It's not like that all year long. From May until September they have normal temperatures in Yakutsk with temperaturs over 20°C from June till August.
What a lovely place, just seeing it made me feels like being home. Hope I could live there someday.
What's the draw for you? I'm curious
For me, a climate like this means you have limited options , life is more linear. You become wired to be grateful for what is. This can be a great relief for those who feel too lost in life. For some people, I believe it's a big draw. But yeah it would be important to socialize.

Absolutely fascinating. Sorry to all other countries, but I think Russia (and former USSR) is the most beautiful place on earth, with some many diversities in culture, ethnicities, religions, weather and climates, from this frozen world to the sub-Sahara regions in the south, from the Kamchatka to the Baltics, and the nature is most breathtaking w good people living there.
Ever visited our India ? It's so diversified that you can find everything here, every climate, beaches, tropical rain forest, arid area, humid area, cold area, damn cold area, hot area, warm area, monsoon, mountains, hills, Cold n hot both desert, salt desert, India has everything😊
So that's why russia invaded Ukraine?
USA - is the most beautiful country, in my opinion.
What about sri Lanka...give your opinions
I love watching you. Great vlog. Greetings from Poland😍😍😍
dziękuję bardzo, naprawdę to doceniam! W tej chwili próbuję uczyć się języka polskiego. Ortografia jest dla mnie najtrudniejsza 🫣
Thanks. This was excellent.
Thank you guys so much for the beautiful and amazing video. I live in Maine in the United States and sometimes it gets and feels pretty darn cold up here but seeing something like this was completely amazing. Sure you just so easy we have it here. And what an awesome and beautiful culture that seems to be there. Again thanks so much for giving the rest of us a look. Safe travels and have a wonderful day.
Our pleasure! So glad you enjoyed it! Lots of love to Maine 🙏🏼❤️
WELL DONE YOU TWO!! This was amazing. To see permafrost, how they heat their cars, the fog, just everything about the place was astonishing. The people have made so many adaptations to be able to live there and thrive. I didn't know it was a huge city ...thank you for a wonderful video. Suzi
Thank you so much Suzi! Really appreciate your support! 🙏🏼🥰❤️
Hi Suzi. Its fooking cold here, siriusly))
In that location?
Gotta be oil-related
Thats the entire population of Wyoming
Almost the entire population of Alaska
Imagine just supplying everything to them
Jets can crash due to frozen fuel
As a South Dakotan can relate. Were used to blizzards cold weather true ice storms Tornados hail storms derecho storms. 36 still living in my same town I grew up in. Helpful in a lot of ways. Almost beneficial. Teaches us how to prepare. As the saying goes, "Think smart not hard."
Just a little colder than where I was born , Detroit, MI. Hooraah.
This is the best video I’ve seen showing and describing Yakutsk. Living in Florida, USA, I cannot imagine surviving those temperatures. It surprised me to hear they can also have temperatures reaching 104°. Thank you for educating me.
Thank you so much Linda!! 🙏🏼❤️
Hell.. I live in Wisconsin and still can't imagine living in that ridiculous cold
