    I own the Tamron 20-40 and find it a very practical generalist. It's interesting to see the continued widening of standard zooms in the Holy Trinity. Used to be 35-70 was a "walkaround" lens and a 24 or 28 prime was your wideangle. Then 28-75 or so with a 17-35 wide in the film-digital transition, and then 24-70 with a 14-24, and now we're pushing 20-70 with 12-24 on Sony. Big names are still making the 16-35 focal length since that's such a staple of professional kits, but we keep seeing bites getting taken out of the wideangle specialist zoom. Tamron's 17-28 is looking pretty redundant with the 20-40 available and I think something like a 16-50 f4 (fullframe) can't be far off.

    If one has been lugging around a Tamron 35-150f2-2.8 on a Sony FF body for a couple of years, the Tamron 20-40f2.8 is a gift from the lens gods. Love it. But I also like the Tamron 28-75 G2 when I don't need the reach of the big fat heavy lens. But I'm old. Fine video, Mark.

    I actually just ordered the Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 after watching reviews for the new Sony 24-50. If it was actually GM2 level optics I probably would have gotten the Sony (but from the reviews, it doesn't seem to be). In general, I think I'll like the 20-40mm range better anyway since I mostly shoot landscape. Plus the Tamron is lighter, smaller, less expensive etc.. should make a nice lens to go hiking in the mountains with. 🙂📷

      How's the lens so far? Regarding autofocus reliability and image quality?
      I also believe 20-40mm is more useful - wish there'd be 20-50mm though. However, the Sony probably has the upper hands in AF? And there's also that nice button for switching to APS-C mode.

    • @cdavey7654
      @cdavey7654 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@wv5959 Seems good so far, and the af seems decent. Though, like you say the af would probably be at least slightly better with the Sony. A 20-50 would be nice as long as it could be in the same size and weight.. - When I'm hiking 15+ miles in a day, at over 7000ft elevation that becomes fairly important (I'm not as young as I used to be, haha). I actually set a custom button on my camera to access the crop (aps-c) mode. It is nice on my a7RIV body since it still gives a 26MP image, so that helps make the somewhat limited range of 20-40 a bit more usable if one is okay with 26MP.

    Ironically the release of the Sony 24-50 might push up the popularity of Tamron's 20-40 lens. When I bought my 20-40 I was looking for an alternative to my Tamron 17-28 f2.8 as I wanted something a bit longer to complement and overlap with the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 so I wouldn't be needing to switch lenses so much. In the end the the 20-40 is a great walkaround lens by itself with maybe a longer prime in the bag if needed. Good video Mark .

    Thank you for the video. Sorry I’m not going to make you stinking rich. I am considering this lens but in no rush since I already own the Sigma 28-70/2.8 DG DN Contemporary and the wider Sigma 16-28/2.8 DG DN to pair with it. Picked up both used for my A7C and now use them on my A7CR and A7CII. I also own the Sony 24-70/2.8 GM II that I use on my A1 and A7RV. Like the size of this new lens though and think is a great replacement if you are carrying around the trinity of small G primes at 24, 40, and 50. I might consider selling of quite a bit and getting the 24-50/2.8 G and pairing it in a three lens kit with the 20/1.8 G and my Zeiss Bats 85/1.8. Admit though that the Batis 25/2, 40/2 CF and 85/1.8 are a great three lens kit. Take care.

      Sounds like the flicker of your lights ((all lights flicker at frequencies we cannot see). Make sure your camera is set to PAL if in the UK and shooting at 25fps. Keep your shutter speed at 1/50. If you still see the lines, that means your lights are pulsing at a different frequency. Look for studio LED light bulbs

      Probably not as its too expensive with too few benefits. Sony 16-55 f2.8 (also G lens) will cost you similar and offer similar quality with a much better range especially on the wide end, with only slightly bigger weight (like 50 g or so). The only reason to choose 24-50 instead of 15-55 for apsc would be if you plan to move to full frame soon. Just my 2 cents 😊

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  Před 4 dny

      There are lots of amazing 3rd party glass. Sigma, Tamron and Viltrox make some lenses that are as good as GM lenses in most areas. For myself, I often buy OEM glass for the focal lengths that are my workhorses. But there are tons of focal lengths that I don't use as often - I always buy 3rd party for that. It's a great way to spend less and some of those lenses are every bit as good as my Sony lenses anyway

    Sony 24-50mm would be a fantastic all rounder for video if they made it a bit faster, say f/1.8 - the idea of carrying an equivalent of three primes (24/35/50) in a single lens is quite tempting and it has been done once with the Sigma 18-35mm - which I think Sony was heavily influenced by this particular Sigma lens when thez came up with the 24-50mm (omg I write like a caveman, but you get my point, heh?) 😅

      I prefer the Tamron. You can always crop a little, but you can make a 24mm lens any wider.

    I want a 20-60 like LUMIX has, but F2.8. 70 isn’t as important to me as 20 at the wide end. Sigma 28-70 is ok but not wide enough.

    It's an interesting lens, but the price, man... You could get one of them Sigmas or Tamrons for that money and get a far more usable range.
    P.S. I know it must be cold as feck in Canada now, but I wonder if you considered making videos outside like Chris/Jordan and Kasey. I find having a different location each video (or just nature in the background) really makes for a more fun watch :)

    Am I seeing things, or are you growing a goatee? Curious if you're adding it to your handsome video repertoire.
    It would be nice to see Viltrox come out with a zoom lens like a 20-60mm f/2.8.

  • @fotosvond_
    @fotosvond_ Před 4 měsíci

    It was smart to make this lens, because it gives you 3 popular primes in one, still being compact with fast AF and good MFD, especially for 50mm at 2.8.
    However, the pricing was not so smart because you can get very good standard zooms or more range for less. If they put this at around 900/950, I would have said it’s still „reasonably“ priced. Tricky if you price an only decent 35/1.8 or other primes so high that you just have to make this mini-zoom a 1299€ deal. 🤯🤣 victims of their own politics.
    However, it’s just not a good deal, even though the characteristics are about what I would want for my 7R III.
    Concerning Tamron‘s 20-40: well yes that’s a nice lens in a very good form factor, however it misses my second favourite, the 50mm focal length. 20-24 is a range I just have no use for, so everything below 24 is generally out for me because it’s a dead end.
    In the end, the best alternative here would be the obvious 28-75 which is nearly half the price of the new Sony G if you are lucky with your timing.

    I would rather have SOny 20-70 F4 lens than this one. I know, it is F4, but for street photography you do not need f2.8. You need more things to get in focus. Low light? I do not worry with Full frame and plus Noise Reduction AI in LightRoom is perfect.

      The 20-70 is such a versatile lens, and it is very sharp. Did some tests shooting leaves of my guava tree. The leaves are loaded with detail and the 20-70 did not disappoint. All pictures I took without any shaking were incredible. The detail is GMaster quality. The f4 doesn't bother me. I'm used to shooting with many f4 lenses.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

      A great all in one lens for sure. I( kept this to 2.8 - because a lot of people want that - but if f4 is all you need (which for many people it is) the 20-70 f4 is one of the best all rounders on the market

  • @stkuj

    I would have much preferred to see a new Macro or anything else from Sony.
    The 24-70 Sigma is an excellent choice over this, had it myself for a long while.
    Even a 24mm GM is a better buy, even if it's a prime.

    None of those lenses are actually a good alternative. Tamron 20-40mm is too short, soft at 40mm, bad bokeh. Sigma 24-70mm is very heavy and large. Sigma 28-70mm is not wide enough, quite soft in full focal range. Sony 24-50mm is the best choice for most people, provided the price is acceptable. And none of those alternatives have anywhere as good AF.
