Need a standard zoom with an f/2.8 aperture, but don't want the bulk and price of the Sony 24-70 GM II? Check out the adorable little Sony FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G! It may be bitty, but is the optical performance mighty? Chris Niccolls took the 24-50mm out to lovely landscapes of Kananaskis to find out.

Can we just take a minute to appreciate how Chris and Jordan manage to consistently produce gorgeous photos even in the dead of winter?
Locatio, location, location
It's easy to get great images in the winter and snow. There great light all day
do they?
I use the Tamron 28-75 2.8 for weddings and love it. It´s only 100g heavier and about 400 € cheaper and for me it has the more versatile range.
Still I think it´s great that Sony tries to offer affordable 2.8 zooms, not like Canon who make you spend 2500 € for the cheapest 2.8 zoom.
Agreed. Same here.
Personally, I love my RF 24-70 f2.8. It’s got more quality from it than I even need. But it was expensive, and it’s large and heavy compared to third party competitors on E-mount. And, of course, this 24-50.
This lens is still overpriced
What the hell are you talking about, dude? As far as I can see, this is the very first and only affordable first party Sony zoom. Their G/GM lens prices are on par with other manufacturers.
I like Tamron, but starting at 28mm is a dealbreaker for me. Sony should have made it 24-50/2. Yes it would have been as heavy as 24-70/2.8, but it would have eliminated in many cases the need to have primes with you. I can't live with f/2.8 shooting at a restaurant at night, I have to carry at least one prime.
Right out of the gate it was like "something is off" - and boom - 60fps, lol.
really? do you even use sony lenses or is this just the usual banter about cameras that resembles how folks argue about their favorite sports team.
@@TerryMcKennaFineArtyour response makes literally no sense to this comment
It's always insane to me how much better and less jarring 60fps or even 30 fps looks. Videos also have so much more details and less compression
yes, it's so weird.
@@CollectionOfJunk lmao
Thanks for keeping up with all of these releases!!
60 fps Niccols is too real.
I think so. Some people prefer first party above other attributes and do not want to spend GM money. No crime in catering to that.
if you don’t wanna spend gm money and don’t need 30fps on your a9, than a tamron does just as fine
@@hardywoodaway9912 I am speaking as a Sony shooter. I did purchase 2 sigma lenses a while back and both had less that satisfactory auto focus, so a pain in the ass with video (i do both stills and video). so I am no longer tempted to use a 3rd party lens when a first party lens exists. In fact I find that when I do look at Sigma or Tamron, I have to reacquaint myself with what their abbreviations mean.
I am not in the market for this lens, but my son who has an a6000 is moving up to full frame and this will likely be his first lens (he does mostly landscape). I am not arguing with you, just pointing out that now the Sony has lots of lenses. sony shooters may not want to waste time on the 3rd party market.
@@hardywoodaway9912not everyone wants a Tamron and as said above why wouldn’t Sony want a piece of that pie🤷♂️
I would prefer to have a Sony lens and would also prefer GM. I would consider buying this lens for my use case and the price point, while not what I could call a bargain, might make it acceptable for me.
@@hardywoodaway9912"Some people prefer first party above other attributes".... "No crime in catering to that"
Read before replying. I promise it will make your day better
I actually love the landscapes in this video, and the snow is also nice.
I LOVE this concept and form factor. If I had a Sony, I'd have to have this!
WHAT?!!?!!? THIS IS A THING?!!? I don't know if anyone else needs this, but I need this!
great video guys. random feedback that audio that played at 3:22 really threw me off. i started checking if i had another tab playing a video lol
"It just makes sticky gonads look great!" - CN - Best quote ever
So many releases this week! You guys must have been so busy :)
In my opinion, an amazing lens to go with the Tamron 35-150mm f2.0 - f2.8. Gets you those ultra wide shots, with a little zoom for versatility, with a low aperture
this could be my new favorite travel and street lens and keep the GM at home.
For everyone saying "if this was a 20-50mm it would be perfect" I want to remind everyone that the Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 exists, and is a pretty great lens.
so true
Definitely a walk-around, street photography lens. I like the idea.
New Fuji X100VI and sigma lenses yesterday and now a new Sony lens today. We’re getting fed this week!
Wow! 3 videos in 2 days 🎉🎉
What i really like about this lens is the design it just looks nice to look at especially with the lens hood attached
For me the most attractive feature is the compact size and still covering 24, 35, and 50mm focal length, which could replace the prime f2.5 lenses if the image quality was good enough. This could be a good alternative for street photographers that strives for compact and large enough aperture.
There are way too many frames in my eyeballs in every second of this video. High Refresh Rate Chris will haunt my dreams.
Great review!
Found the music track a little distracting though.
Appreciate the review! Think i will get the 24-70 gm2 if not this
Sounds like a good lens to offer as a kit lens on a new body. I’m hoping to get a 2.8 which crosses the 70mm barrier as photographing events 70mm can be too distant for performers at the back of the stage, so use the 70-200mm but that is not wide enough when their at the front of the stage. Am considering the tamron 35-150 but hoping Sony might come out with some thing lighter… Wouldnt have noticed the frame rate if you’d not said any thing
For Street Photography and Travel I think the Tamron 20-40mm makes more sense. I have an old Pentax-F 24-50mm F4 which I love for street/urban shooting on Pentax, but would love a modern version for my Sony as I would value a more compact zoom over the F2.8 aperture. I may go with the Tamron though
Back in the DSLR days we had a really useful zoom, the 16-35mm f/2.8. Now your talking.
Tamron 20-40 if I needed a compact zoom.
This
Tamron is the closest competitor, I wonder there is no comparison.
I love my 20-40! I've got a whole review of it on my channel but overall I think it's an underrated lens
Whenever you touch a Tamron, you can feel how cheap it was. Maybe if you’re a professional, you just care about results, you want to min-max cost/profit, but I, as a hobbyist, want to also feel good about using my gear. Just like with cars performance isn’t everything; you don’t want hard, scratchy plastics or cheap cloth on the seats, you want soft-touch materials, nicely damped switches, soft leather…
Oh and besides feeling cheap, you don’t get a function button, aperture ring, breathing comp.
@@houserhythm I'm a professional and not once have I used the function button on any of my lenses that she's them. Would a AF/MF switch be nice, yes. Does it take less then 2 seconds to switch MF/AF using buttons on my camera also yes.
Sure some Sony glass feels nice in the hand but honestly as long as it gets the job done, produces a great image, and doesn't feel uncomfortable to hold I don't really care if it feels like plastic.
I can't wait to get this
Jordan, what’s happening to Chris’s knees during the sitting shot during the video performance section? It only happens there but was curiosity it was a focusing thing of that lens for the Panasonic or just a rendering thing?
60FPS looks so much smoother and more pleasing!
Great vid thanks! Subbed.
The music in this one was straight out of Ixion. I approve.
I like the Tamron 20-40 2.8 better. It's a bit smaller and I like the shift towards the wider end. However, the Tamron is missing the apature ring if that is something you need.
24 fps looks much more relaxed than 60 fps. Please make sure Jordan won't forget his ND filters again!
I have the 20-70F4, and 24G, 40G, 50G lenses. This is an interesting lens for sure. If I didn't have the 20-70 I would strongly consider it. But it's easy to go down the fast aperture rabbit hole, with why stop at f2.8 get faster primes. And will say I do find I use the 20mm focal length a lot on the 20-70 f4. So yes, tempting but I think I will sit this one out.
Most of us are looking to minimize the number of lenses we need to buy, so I think its a "dont bother with a kit zoom and a bunch of budget primes lens" , fast enough to soften backgrounds and better in low light than kit zooms, this AND a 150- 600 telle , OR a super wide or a macro and as a hobbyist depending on your interests thats going to cover a lot of situations.
This is the perfect travel lens for me, if I were to do one lens travel. I love the 24mm focal length and having just a little more close up capability is great.
exactly, I use 3 primes 28-35-50, always wanted to see a fast compact zoom with 50 on the long end and about 20ish on the wider end. This is such a good offering
24mm just not wide enough for a travel lens. 20mm or a little wider then would be a great lens. Way too limiting. I think you will get bored of this lens quickly.
@@markymarkreviews so I tell you that I love 24mm. And you try to impose your point of view, to the point of telling me I'd get bored of a focal length I know I love?
@@E4xtream I was speaking more generally not your particular case. The sub title of the video is “ Do we need this (lens) ?” No. Not in my opinion.
@@markymarkreviews you wrote it in reply to my comment though.
I’d love a good fast 20-50 as a standard walk around, any ff system.
got the tamron 20-40mm f2.8 recently and i love it ngl
Event reportage. And a Sigma 65f2 or SEL8518 on the second body. Perfectly fine.
I was in a Rush cover band called the Sappy Gonads
Bazaars of istanbul are waiting for u here… ❤❤ come anytime u want; trust me you guys have lots of fans and friends here ❤❤
The focal range isn't the problem. However, that price ($1,099) is absurd.
tamron 20-40 mm f2/8 is better option in my opinion

I recently bought a used Sony 24-105mm F4 like new. I personally feel it is more practical for All-In-One lens for travel. I am more in photography than videograohy. Aperture F4 is good enough for me. Ultimately, it really depends on your core preference.
Love how smooth and true-to-life this video feels with the proper recording specs. Good job Jordan 👍
Actually you can see how the focus is shifting to background instead of being on the face and it's distracting.
I think the 60p looks like ass, it’s terrible 🤣
Better to have more choice than less. E mount is all about finding the perfect lens for your creative vision, often at a massive discount over other systems.
no mention of the 20-40 f2.8 tamron? Seems a direct competitor. It's wider, but that might be an advantage to many.
I love the focal length 24-50 nikon kit Lenz
Shoutout for the Haukland Jacket!
I think this is aimed to displace those three little G primes they came out with a few years back. I believe the fastest of those was f/2.5. This lens covers the range of all three at a similar aperture and not much more price or size. I think you’re right on with its use as a street/travel lens.
It has nothing in common with small G primes, other than focal range. People buy those primes for the reason they want small and light and this zoom is not. Moreover, people would choose one, not three of those primes, the one that fit their needs most.
Jordan definitely forgot his ND filters because there's no good reason to shoot any standard CZcams filter at 4K/60. Looking at you, Tony and Chelsea.
I say yes we need it. It you like the A7C type camera with the 28-60. Well this gives you a better lens for the compact cameras.
Wow. The Fujifilm 16-55 2.8 is 655g. This is exactly what I was looking for since switching from Xt3 to A7c!
The Fuji is 3x zoom, f4 ff equivalent. This lens is 2x zoom with f2.8. You have to trade zoom range for aperture.
@@withoutpassid I would still take that sony route.
@@miggyloz806 As a Sony user, I would take the 20-70 f4 route :)
Built in stabilisation, and is it better than the 24-105? (if comparable at same focal lenght).
Not bad. I'm all in for compact, light lenses that don't break the bank. But in this case, I would prefer the wider focal range of the 20-70 f4. It's about the same weight, size and price, and if you can step back, it would give you almost the same shallowness of depth of field at 70mm at f4 as you would get with this lens at 50mm at f2.8. That all being said, I know there would be situations where the need of an extra stop would trump everything else.
This looks like the videos that play on TVs for sale in big box store. So crisp. So clear.
Is it possible Sony is planning on releasing something like a 50-150 f2.8 to pair with this lens? That might make sense to have a light, fast, affordable kit with a smaller aperture range than the usual 24-70, 70-200 combo.
If it was an f/2...then I'd be interested. And with the good but not elite autofocus speeds, I don't see a purchase for it unless you really need those 4mm at the wide over the additional 20-25mm you get with the Sigma or Tamron offerings.
I feel like one use for this lens is for someone who would be bringing the 24-70/2.8, but also some sort of a telephoto. This is cheaper and lighter than the 24-70, and if you also have a 70-200, you probably don’t need to fully cover the focal length gap. If you don’t need the 2.8, sure, the 20-70/4 makes sense, but if you do, I could easily see this having benefits over a 24-70 or 28-75.
That said, the lens would probably be more special as a 22-45.
I like the idea. Would live to see something similar from Nikon. Make it 28-50 and even smaller. And a retro styled version for the Zf :)
More options is always good but I do think it's going to struggle a tad given it has three direct competitors (size and weight wise).
Most similar - Tamron 20-40 2.8
More versatile - 20-70 f4 or Sigma 28-70 2.8 (excluding tamron's 28-75 as its considerably bigger)
Not for me but more options won't hurt.
Maybe saying it like bouquet will prevail over bokah, only time will tell. Thank you for the review!
3:00 SAPCICLES!
Wow. The soap bubble Bokeh so pronounced in the macro shot at 6.03min.
the bokeh was talked about in other reviews as looking like stop signs and lots of onion rings.
I mean if you look at this as a bunch of compact 2.8 primes like 24,28,35,50mm and it can perform like it it's a good deal.
I didn’t think about it like that, it’s a great way to look at it :)
Still praying for a Sony 24-105 2.8 .. I know they can make it smaller than the Canon version.. it won’t be lightweight regardless but could definitely be the one lens event use
Tony would be so proud of the 60 fps
great decision by sony, as a compact lens, with very high quality, and the 70-200/2.8 is still a must have. Excellent also as a travel zoom.
We have sigma 18-50mm on apsc which is 27-75mm full frame. They’re small and compact. That lens should work with a7cii and a7cr.
Hello. I'm not interested in buying this lens since I'm an amateur photographer shooting Pentax 🙂
I did however enjoy and like the different "feel" of this video... Higher frame rate, energetic music/song combined with that fast moving water really made it a treat to watch. Your review was as usually (as usual?) professional with a healthy dose of humour, covering a lot of important aspects and usage scenarios. Really enjoyable to watch.
Thank you for your work, sirs 🙂🙏
Nice one 🎉, a new one in my worklow ? 🙃
For that coverage, I prefer the Tamron 20-40mm for the wider shot. Plus, it's cheaper too.
Us too.
I think if I was in the Sony system I'd go with the 20-70 F4 G over this one. But it's still super cool the amount of different options Sony shooters get.
I hope Jordan doesn't forget his ND's next time. Didn't care for the 60fps presentation.
24-50? Hmm.... Truly at $1100 USD? Why? Anyone who will buy this should just buy the most excellent Sigma 24-70 DG DN f2.8 ART. See Christopher Frosts review and you will see how much this lens actually needs in camera corrections. Its insane. Love the review though Chris and Jordan. Good job!
6:30 Holy coffee jitters, batman!
Does anyone else think it's time for an updated/upgraded 24-240mm? I'd love to see even 24-200mm at a constant f4 and hopefully a decent closeup capability... I'd pay up and deal with some weight for this.
6:11 Damn that Panasonic G9 Mk.2 is stable....6:33 Jordan shivering (not the G9) 🤣
Seems like the audio isn't synched right, but that could be a CZcams issue.
Way... wayyyyy too expensive. Here in Germany this lens goes for 1299 Euro (= $1405). Who would buy a lens like that when the 20-70mm is available for 100-200 Euro less, the 24-105mm f4 for 300-400 less or the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 & Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 for 400-500 less?
I like the 60fps. I have a feeling it won't stick around though.
The 24mm being fully extended is a hard pass from me. I was really hoping this was staying zoom all internal. THAT would have made this lens VERY interesting.
If this had OSS, this would have been an excellent hand-held video lens!
CZcams isn't helping the 1080 compression on this one. Bumped it to 4k and what gorgeous production.
Would love a 20-50. Have the Tamron 20-40 which isn’t perfect, but this doesn’t exactly compel me to switch.
Appreciate Sony for releasing a lens like this, but sticking with my 28-75 Tamron G2 I got for $700 USD. Third party Is just so good now.
I demand this lens! Give it to me now! 😅😅
If it were a 20-50mm I would have purchased it. In my mft days I loved the PL1025mm. Only downside is that It was huge
The Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 exists and is pretty great
I'm getting old and shooting dance floor at the end of the day with a 24-70 is effort! I'm not saving that much weight with this but...
Maybe good for street? I shoot most photos around f/8-f10 and carry a 28 and 50. This could replace both.
It is a good option to pull people into full frame. It’s cheaper than Sony 16-55mm F2.8.
You cut off the wide a bit. Yet you can then move to full frame in the near future and still have glass.
I love it - not going to buy it, but I love it
Focal range matters more to me. I prefer 24-105 or 20-70 . my dual ISO handles low light pretty good
half the price of the GM, considerably smaller and still viable with aps-c crop
...and an aperture ring. love at first sight
12-50 f/2 would be killer!
I rather get the 20-70 F4 and a prime if I need low light
I'm waiting for a 10mm to 300mm f/1.2 lens that has everything you need including weather proofing and stabilization, etc., with perfect performance for all occasions. Manufacturers have the ability, they just need to build them. 😊
Will Sony make an a7c II kit with this lens?
When will they understand that the extending zoom is a deal breaker?
24p for life.
My choice is still the 20-70, same size, WAY more range, even better macro capabilities. Definitely more important to get the shot, instead of getting it at f/2.8
I would love to see the following comparison. Two photographers shooting a wedding. One with standard equipment and another skilled photographer using an iPhone. I’d like to see the results compared from the same wedding. And I’d like to ensure the iPhone photographer knew how to use the iPhone properly and was as skilled in composition as the photographer using the digital camera.
My main issue with it is that bokeh, the background rendering is not the best.
