Just had the exact same.issue yesterday on my M3.
It has dropped to -8 degrees C in the UK this week (which confirms Adam's temperature comment).
This morning I followed the procedure, as i had the exact same foam pads & it worked a treat & took 5 minutes to complete.

I have 2012 BMW 335i with the same rattle. I put some one sided black foam strip on top of the existing piece in the shape of a donut to hug the male piece. It would be nice if BMW would pay more attention to the details of the interior space. It is a rattling mess with all the hard plastic that creeks when pressed or when going over anything rougher than a freshly paved road.

I didn't have any foam or Velcro, so i had an idea to spray it with plasti dip, figuring it would rubberize it and take the hard plastic sound away. It worked for 3 of the 4. Not sure why not on the other one. Will have to experiment a little more.
