    In this video, I show you how to replace the sticky door handles on your F30 BMW 3 Series. This issue and the repair process is similar on many BMW models.
    BMW likes to use rubber coatings on the high contact surfaces in their cars. The problem is, heat and other environmental factors eventually cause the rubber to break down, creating a sticky mess.
    Kies Motorsports sells replacement handles that don't have the thick rubber layer, so theoretically, you'll never have an issue after installing them. I found that this fitment was just as good as the stock ones.

    NOTE 1: when you go to remove your door handle trim, there is a grove on the bottom side where you can insert a pry tool. Start there, rather than the top side like I did in the video.
    NOTE 2: after taking the trim cover off the handle, there is a small access hole in the handle where you can pop out the window switch MUCH more easily than I showed in the video 😅

    I have an 08' E90. None of the buttons have been scratched white but drivers pull handle spot is a little sticky. Already did the window switch but it is nearly impossible to actually find that rubberish finish they come with from the factory. I want to do the pull handle, but you need some special tools in order to do it correctly. I really love how there is so much you can get for these cars. A real enthusiast community surrounding them.

    Justin, this is a great instructional video. Thank you. Also, not to take anything away from Kies, but I think you can hit the inner handle with some matte black paint to resolve the “sticky” issue. Cheap hack.

    • @justinbuice
      @justinbuice  Před 8 měsíci

      I wish I would have kept the old handle to experiment with! I think the problem is that it's not only sticky, but the material gets soft when it's hot. I'm not sure how the paint would hold up when the handle is near Play-Doh constancy in the summer. If it works, that would be a nice savings though!

    justin i believe there's an access hole to get to the window switch clip from the front of the door card instead of the back of it like you were trying. it should be revealed once you pop the outer door pull cover. I think I saw it once in a BMW manual.

    • @justinbuice
      @justinbuice  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Nice! I’ll look for next time I’m in there. A friend of mine said he was able to push the entire switch forward to compress the tab, then lift up from the back but I guess I wasn’t strong enough to do that. Another option would have been to cut the hole slightly larger. That would give better access without compromising anything else

    • @toxikneedle
      @toxikneedle Před 9 měsíci

      @@justinbuice when I removed mine, I didn't compress the forward tab enough and it got ruined, almost broke off. it's honestly quite fragile, so it was worth the extra time you took with it. But, this lead me to look into how to do it correctly, which is where I found the info about the forward access hole. I replaced the full window switch assembly either way so breaking the OEM one wasn't a huge deal at the end of the day. By the way my window switch assembly rubber was also starting to get sticky, it had similar issue as the door pulls, that's why I replaced it with aftermarket.

      @@toxikneedleI went out to my car, took the trim cover off and found it! That would have made it much easier. The entire time I was messing with it, all I could think was, “there’s no way this is the only way to get this out.” Turns out I was doing it the hard way.

    Hi - have bmw 328i automatic 2011 not x drive. Second owner - bought from dealership in 2014. Only 77,000 miles. Past several months the BC push button and the up/down switch on the left side stalk works only for 5 minutes after startup without issue for scrolling thru setup, checking oil, changing display, etc. Then stops working/functioning - with nothing changing on display for check oil level, change between mpg, distance to empty, etc when press bc or the up/down knob. Other center display data displays ok. After turning off car and letting sit for 10 to 20 mins then works again after startup for 5 mins then back to not working. Have you had this issue or ever heard of this problem. Any ideas how to fix? Very strange. Thanks and can anyone else provide any ideas?

    There are cutouts on the bottom side of the handle cover (very base and middle of it), that's where you should start taking them off, and NOT from the top, as you did, this way you will most definitely do some damage =|

    Why is this even a thing. Can they not upgrade the material? I wrap napkins on my bf car door handle.

    Just did this for my e90 passenger door. Silly but hopefully get another 150k miles out of this door handle now lol

      Nice! was the process the same?

    • @justinbuice
      @justinbuice  Před 9 měsíci +1

      My E90 had a similar issue but I remember them peeling rather than melting

    • @redrobotdubz
      @redrobotdubz Před 9 měsíci

      @justinbuice yep basically same process. remove panel, drill out old plastic solder point, replace with new carrier handle and I used some JB weld to hold the handle plastic connections to the door in place

    Do any G chassis owners have this issue yet? 😅

      Fortunately, BMW did away with the nasty soft touch coatings that melt in the G chassis cars (at least for the g20)

    CRAZY... I do love this guy but you can buy carbon fiber covers that just pop right onto the back of the door handle. I paid 12 for a pair and it took about 10 seconds to install one. DON'T DO WHAT THIS FELLOW SAYS!

    Unfortunately, I don't have my F30 anymore but there is a website of just about every BMW spare part imaginable. There is a part that is hard durable plastic that snaps right over the back part of that crummy handle and looks great. So, if you want, do that and save yourself some work. Someone, somewhere is enjoying that on my old car!

    So, apparently, this has been happening for years, and BMW hasn't lifted a finger to solve it? Another reason why my next car will be a Tesla.

    • @justinbuice
      @justinbuice  Před 9 měsíci

      Yup. My 2006 3 series had the same problem

      Tesla has a issues of their own. Be sure to do a lot of research before you commit to one.

      @@justinbuice Thanks for the heads-up. I've been subscribed to your channel now for 5 years since I bought my 2014 3-series. I have had no issues so far, BUT.... I have been following Tesla since 2012, and have researched the shit out of the company and its products to the point where I legitimately call myself an expert on the company. Yes, Tesla has had and continues to have customer service problems and build issues - you are right. What I love about it though is that they never sit still on the updates, making an average of 5 per day that are incorporated into the assembly line - they don't use the 5-year model of update that legacy auto uses, they are in constant iteration mode. So, I'm willing to live with a panel gap here and there when I know the more important safety, efficiency, and affordability issues are next level. I'm waiting until this summer when the udated model 3 comes to Canada and the US. Until then, I'll cruise around in my BMW - I have a beige interior... I wonder if that makes a difference on this problem you are talking about here?
