  • One of the biggest debates I see in my comment sections is what the best way to teach sight words is. In this video, I'm going to show you how I teach sight words by looking at the parts of the word that CAN be sounded out and teaching the tricky part- so your child doesn't feel as overwhelmed by the list of 100+ sight words that was sent home to memorize.

I like to teach the sounds too. In addition, one thing I like to do as a first grade teacher is introduce the “naughty e” who is the defiant friend of “magic e”. He likes to cause chaos and won’t help the vowel say its name and instead messes up the vowel sound. The kids love pointing out the naughty e when they see it.😂

You are the best. I only teach it the way you explain it and don't look anywhere else for help. My kids are doing really well and are not confused. Thanks so much

At the end, because the sound of "o" is different, they hv to memorize it. Even if they dont memorize the word 'come', they hv to memorize the 'o' to read it correctly.

I agree. No matter what we cannot escape from having to make the children memorize… or in other words use the drilling method

Well done, you ve got a lot of amazing videos and so much to learn from, Thank you.
But I kind of disagree with this method because it might get the child confused when teaching sounds o with the magic e for words like bone, cone etc. What do you think about this?

Thank you! I appreciate it! And that's a completely fair question & one I get a lot; you want to teach the long vowel spellings (vce for the examples you shared), digraphs, etc., and do targeted practice with those since those will be what they'll use to decode the vast majority of the time (about 90% of words follow the rules they can be taught.) If they're confident/ have mastered those, they'll usually know pretty quickly when they come to a word that doesn't sound right using the spellings they know or doesn't make sense in the context (for example, replacing 'come' with 'comb' would probably not make sense in context.) Does that make sense?

When teaching sight words, do you explain what they mean, and ask students to write it in a sentence?
