2011 MacBook Pro Upgrades (HD, RAM, Battery, Cleaning, Thermal Paste) April 04, 2019

  • I put a new solid state drive in my MacBook Pro 2011 along with some new RAM and a new battery. I cleaned the inside and added new thermal paste to the heat sync. If you are interested in how this is done please watch.
    If you stay till the end I give a little rant about why new Apple MacBooks are not up to the standard they used to be. Apple is really going down hill. It seems we live in a disposable society and no one makes quality stuff anymore, not even Apple. However they are still charging the big price tag on the inferior merchandise. I encourage you all to do your research before buying new computer equipment, you may be in for an awakening, I sure was!

    It is running great now. It is awesome having the extra big HD, I was able to fit all of my music back on my laptop and get my original pics back from the cloud. No issues at all.

    Very informative video. You did a great job! Removing the entire motherboard just to reapply the thermal paste looks a bit scary. Now that I've watched the video, I know what to look for. Very well done... Thanks for sharing.

    You can get some of the dust off that way, just make sure you blow it out of the machine and not under some other parts. It isn’t hard to take apart and I was scared when I first started but it worked out great in the end.

    Few years late to this video but I want to say you did an excellent job! Both on your upgrades, I’m a fairly technical oriented person (only replaced a few phone batteries) and your video was presented very well. I’ve not had any overheating issues, including with the separate built in gpu, but your video is inspiring to repaste the cpu and gpu since after 12 years that paste is absolutely dried out. Thank you. I think this video is absolutely still relevant! Wish Apple would’ve continued OS X updates, not that these machines would be able to use the new software features haha Thank you again

      Forgot to say Apple deserves the rant. Even if soldering the ram and storage helped with space the speeds aren’t faster and their pricing for upgrades from the factory have always been outrageous! The lack of ability to upgrade or repair is just silly, to be polite haha, other manufacturers use standard laptop ram and standard storage drives, storage drives that are compatible with desktops!, and cost at worst the same. But they’re upgradable and/or fixable, c’mon Apple

    I gave you a like for the rant! lol Love it. Apple have just gotten greedy.
    You're so right, Ive got a late 2011 17". It was an unbelievable machine until I took it to apple for something minor (Cant remember what). They changed my GPU and told me it was a recall. Months later, I had so many issues with the screen glitching etc.
    It resulted in a white screen March 2020. Apple told me to recycle it as its out of date. (So rude).
    I done loads of research and only a few days ago I managed to find a fix. Its back up and running like it used to be.
    Again, apple are nothing but fraudulent.

I have the same Mac and I'm just about to upgrade it to 240 GB SSD and 8GB RAM, i'm scared of doing something wrong even if I already watch more than 10 tutorials, but you gave me the confidence I needed, I hope everything turns out well. Also, I thought it couldn't be upgraded to anything more than 8 GB, guess that was false lol. Now I want to upgrade to 16 GB RAM.

      I’m a bit late to the party but anyone looking into upgrading ram on these. Just do a few google searches. The max ram listed for my 2011 15inch from Apple was 8gb, I’ve been running 16gb at faster speed than was listed for 8gb from Apple since 2015. Do some research. There are websites/ companies that can help you find parts that they’ve tested that’ll work.

    Thats a lot of work just for repasting. it would be way more user friendly to put the processor facing the back of the machine... was going to do the paste refresh but now, will wait a bit longer.Already did the SSD upgrade and and ram a long time ago. And that's why I still have this machine. The original battery is still Holding 4700mah from 5770 Over all not bad when I have windows installed too.New Macbooks these days a big cash grab for people not using for professional purposes.

    • @hagenaarsfamily9794
      @hagenaarsfamily9794  Před rokem

      Yeah the new machines are very expensive and will never last as long as these old gals lasted. I had an issue with mine a while back and I thought the hard drive failed so I got it replaced under warranty but it turns out that likely wasn’t the issue. I needed a machine everyday for a course I was on so I picked up a 2012 MacBook Pro and it also works great. I switched the ram and put the new hard drive in there. I didn’t realize that with this HD I needed to format it first, I don’t remember doing that in this video, maybe I need to rewatch it lol. Anyway I almost sent this one back too but then watched a few more videos from others and figured it was the formatting. I don’t think I went back to my old machine to see what actually was the issue when I got this one up and running. And this one has the upgraded OS from my old one so I cannot even just stick this new HD in the old one now. Either way I got some spare parts now. The new Macs have build in obsolescence and will not likely make it 10 or 11 years.

    • @isaacbaric1799
      @isaacbaric1799 Před 3 lety

      Fyi to everyone reading this, theses unibody macbook pros run very warm regardless of how much thermal paste you put or how much you clean the internals, the 2011 models are of no exception to this. This is why the unibodys can run into GPU failure because when the fans are set to auto by default they don't run as often as they should.

    Does your mac not have GPU issues? I had to solider a CMIzpper onto the logic board. Now it's back to life and working sweet. Running music software no probs at all. I swapped out the Dvd for a 2nd hard-drive with a 10$ caddy.

    • @hagenaarsfamily9794
      @hagenaarsfamily9794  Před 2 lety

      No I had no GPU issues but I like the idea of swapping the DVD drive out since the MacBook got bumped one time and the opening to the drive is less accessible now, well pretty much completely in accessible.

    • @fortroadmassive4095
      @fortroadmassive4095 Před 2 lety

      @@hagenaarsfamily9794 Cool you must have got lucky with no GPU issue! It was a major fault at the time. Apple did a recall but those Macs failed again and were scraped, which is a shame. People didn't know about the fix. "The right to repair as you mentioned!" Another issue with Apple is the OS goes out of date. They force you to buy newer machines. Lookup "DosDude". It's a way to upgrade the OS on unsupported machines. I'm running Mojave very smoothly but I could upgrade if needed on the 2011. Search on Ebay for " 2nd sata hdd ssd 2011 " ;-)

      If you have a unibody macbook pro, then the temperature can be naturally hot because of the way they are designed, which is why sometimes the bottoms of these computers can feel hot. However, if it feels very very hot and mabye you smell smoke, you should definitely check the internals.
