- My buddy's 9 year old macbook wasn't running too well, so we decided to add a few upgrades to make it run like new. We did a RAM upgrade, a SSD upgrade, and a battery upgrade to make it feel really modern. Have any questions about the process! Ask in the comments! I'll try my best to help.

Q: Did you clean out the fans and replace thermal paste while you were in there? The fans sound kind of loud!
A: Of course! It’d be silly to not to clean out the paste while I’m in there. It was CRUSTY like you have no idea. 😷 I documented that process on my Instagram. If you’re curious, Link in the description or just click here! 🤗

This cant go to 16?
yeah can this go to 16 or nahh
@Daniel Roache @Thomas Cox Yes it can. Preconfigured from apple they only came with up to 8gb, but work just fine with 16 if you put in 2 supported 8gb sticks.
@@h.b.5577 thanks bunches, the next one i upgrade will have 16gb but i already ordered the 8gb kit on amazon
hey man, could you send me a guide how to disable deicated AMD gpu and do a fresh macOS install on ssd, cuz I only managed to disable AMD gpu after the boot and am currently using Linux mint as OS. Thanks in advance!
I have a 2012 15” MacBook Pro that is running sooooo slow and this looks way cheaper than buying a new one.
Definitely just swapping out a classic hard drive for a SSD will improve things immensely.
i have a 2012 13" macbook pro with an SSD and 8gbs of ram and it runs really well, your 15" with an i7 processor should run better
You own the greatest macbook ever created imho. Go for 16gb of ram and at least a 1tb drive, also replace the thermal paste. Sierra will work flawlessly on this machine, but Mojave isn't that bad either. Good luck!
A 2012 15" is an awesome macbook even by 2020 standards. New SSD, fresh OS install and extra RAM and it'll be ready for Thunder Road. 8GB RAM and 250GB SSD would be fine, but if it's for graphics/video more is better.
I have the 13" as well and I upgraded it to 10gb of RAM and 250ssd. I might be ramping it to 16gb soon and 1tb of SSD. though I have a problem with its heat. It is a bit hot when I do video editing in FCPX. Any tips guys?
tip: when you're shooting, especially on videos like these, don't use the AF mode on your camera. it'll change focus everytime you move your hands. switch it to MF and focus it to the table. that way it'll be easier for us to see the video. cheerio
Thank you for the advice!! I’m still really new to CZcams and learning as I go. I understand the focus hunting can get a bit annoying. 😅 i appreciate you watching!!
Oh man I didn't know that until now too, thanks
The classic “compūter”
It annoys the shit out of me.
Wow man, production quality feels like you should have at least a couple 100 thousand subs. Can't wait to see you grow into a larger channel, your content has that good balance of being quick and snappy, but still very informative and interesting to watch.
Damn, thank you so much! Hopefully I can get you to stick around to see me grow a little longer 🤗 Appreciate the love
Interesting videos, I especially like that you do not constantly talk for no reason and that you are not adding any dramatic or mood music, just good straight to the point information..
Ran all the similar upgrades on my mid 2010 MBP : 500 GB SSD, 16 GB ram, new battery + some new rubber feet. Runs like a dream now. Boots up and seconds is very snappy.
how do you pick the ssd to be compatible in macbook?
Shalom Christian Gaerlan that’s not that hard in the unibody ones from 2012 and earlier

Just upgrade my 2011 MBP over the weekend...16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. The battery only had 45 cycles, so I’ll hold off on that for now. It was so easy and now this old MBP has a second life. Thanks for the tutorial!
listen, i don't know anything about electronics, but your videos are so well made and your commentary is so fun and engaging that i'm watching your videos and subscribing anyway. keep doing cool stuff!
Wow, thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. I was able to upgrade my son's MacBook Pro 2011. I purchased all the items and did it all myself. Now the MAC is super fast and works like brand new. I just saved a bunch of money by upgrading it and not buying a new one.
Thanks for sharing!
I have an old macbook pro i might need to upgrade. How do you know which parts would fit the computer? I have never attempted upgrading stuff myself but might as well try before I close the door on this..
Thanks a ton mate! I just did the same for macbook early 2011 one. One small note for those want reinstall OS... when you press command r while rebooting it installs the original OS that came with the laptop. Instead, press option command r so you can install the latest OS that your laptop supports.
You're videos are hella rad and your personality is very watchable and appealing keep up the great work!
Thank you dude! Comments like these are my favorites 🥰
Dude I love your content! Keep it going 💪
Great video ! that was a great job, didn't realize it was this easy to do. Thanks for sharing this !
I don’t know anything about electronics but I’m going to try to do this to my Mac book pro 2011. I have a question do I have to also buy the usb cable converter you used ?
I really like you're style, Jeff. The previous video I watched already made me subscribe, or this one would have. Really nice.
When installing the SSD, you also need to transfer over the 4 silver pins that are screwed into the existing HDD.
They locate the SSD inside the Macbook and will anchor it down to prevent it moving.
Edit: Never mind...sorry just saw the part where you transferred them over.
your narration just on point. keep it up bro. much respect.
I have the 2011 13 inch version which is pretty maxed out, 1tb ssd, good battery and 16gb of ram, i even installed a new keyboard to give it that freshness, runs like a champ, even with mojave on it, i could install catalina but i don't like my 32 bit apps to be useless! So mojave is where the road ends for my i suppose. Great video btw man!
Where did you buy the battery from?
3 yrs later but there is a way to update these to the most current mac os now.
Simplicity. Your videos is so natural. So easy to follow.
Thank you! ☺️ glad you enjoy
I just bought one of these to run a LPR system in my work truck. Hopefully I made a good choice but time will tell. It is kinda nice to see how easy it is to upgrade
Good job, narration was excellent. Very concise, good script.
I did not skip advertisement bro.
Thank you so much for giving us inspiration to upgrade our Macbook Pro 2011.
I hope someday I can upgrade the RAM and Hard Drive to SSD. Need money to do it since I cannot afford it like buying laptop. Bdw this Macbook Pro 13" late 2011 was given to me from my friend. Thank you so much bro. I already subscribed ❤️❤️
Love the Jerryrigseverything vibes I’m getting! Great job my dude
Ah he’s definitely a big inspiration for sure man, thank you!
The battery screws are a three vaned screw so require a security or ifixit set of screws. Torx is also useful on these older MacBooks.
I have a 2012 mid Mcbook Pro, what should I look and check to lessen the heat it produces when I do video editing. I have already upgraded the battery, use already a SSD and added a RAM upgrading it from 4gb to 10gb. Any tips? I even got to a point that I use a small fan when using my mac.
This is awesome! I'm going to try this out with my MacBook Pro13 2011. I was going to get a new MacBook but just stumble upon your video! Nice Work! Thank you Cheers!
Hi! I have a 2011 15' MBP and had the logic board replaced back in 2016 when apple announced a recall program for this particular model. But 2 years later by December 2018, it failed again, with blue screen and lines, or just a plain white screen. I've read it's also because of gpu issues with this particular model. Now, I'm thinking of having it checked and repaired in a local repair shop, then yeah ask to have the ram and hdd upgraded to an ssd. Do you think it'll last for at least another 2 years? I'm worried since people on the internet say its a gpu issue and replacing the logic board, the issue may just appear again...
been watching this for hours and now ready to take on the task. my question is would this tutorial and parts would work on a 2010 MacBook? please and thank you in advance
When I replace both RAM cards, my laptop won't boot. But when I keep one of the old one and replace the other it works fine. Any idea what could be the problem? I have the same model and got the same replacement parts.
mine is MBP 13" early 2011 and still using it now for daily work (dev).
almost 4 years ago i replaced one of my 2GB RAM with 8GB, so total i get 10 GB RAM.
i replaced my hdd with a new ssd 256GB and swap the dvd drive with my original hdd 500GB using hdd caddy adapter.
the only thing i left is the battery, with over 1k cycles and battery capacity 3128mAh (54%), but still good to use for 4 hours work :)
when you setup new ssd to your old MBP, make sure to check on TRIM support is active.
I m watching your video but you didn't gave any good suggestion of unplugging . once i tried to unplug the hard disk and i almost broke the plug and stickers on battery? Any suggestion of unplugging ?
I got an early 2011 MacBook pro. Did a similar upgrade and it's running beautifully.
Hey the port for the battery looks different on mine, everything else is the same, but because of this the new battery won’t fit. Any help?
Great narrative.. nice project .. I love the Mac .. just the hardware and software are unique .. can not seem to get them in my head .. I am thinking🤔 get a old Mac Pro to save some money and start to learn repair again.. yes I know 46 years old now . Have not touch Apple computer for decade already.. but you inspire me to go repair my iMac 🖥 2011 version .. thank you 🙏🏼
Reading this makes me happy. This is exactly what I hoped to accomplish when I made this video. Please best of luck on repairing your mac! Its never too late to get into fixing stuff. Thank you so much for watching! 😄
So when I try to restore from Macintosh HD, I get the error "Restore process has failed. click done to continue". Do you know what this error is?
Bro, this videos show us that we don´t have to spent so much money to have a great macbook.
Hi Jeff! Sorry if it is a bit stupid question but if you install a new ssd and you boot up pressing command and F3. Can you choose new OS install and it just installs IOS? even if the ssd is super new and empty?
This has helped me so much with upgrading/fixing my own slow AF late 2011 Macbook pro! Thanks Legend!
What os do you have downloaded?
one question(sorry for my stupidity): “restoring ssd from hd” means you moved all files and also the Operative System from hd to ssd without a usb bootable that could be used to reinstall te OS ?
Hey, can you recommend the battery? Did you buddy say anything about it? I read many people say it lasted only for a short amount of time and then the mac would die after having reached 50% or so.
I have never used Mac-book pro but am getting chance to use 2011 Mac-book pro 17-inch. Can I watch CZcams and use MS-office for words and Excel? also can I install few basic, small softwares like CPU-Z, VLC media player, Adobe acrobat reader. can I play old arcade games like Pacman using emulator. Window-7 has an option of playing old games by changing compatibility of the software, is there any similar function in mac-OS?
I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. I’ve been debating if I should any money into it or just buy new. What’s your opinion? Thanks!
Hello my UPGRADED MBP early 2011 running High Sierra can't detect my external monitor using a thunderbolt to HDMI adapter. Does anyone know what might be causing the problem please.? Thank you
Thanks for a great video. I believe you should be able to clone your old hard drive to the new SSD directly from your docking station. I have an Inateck docking station similar to yours and cloning was easy. Hope that works for you.
I think you suppost have both drives on the dock to work. Right?
Great video but I did what you say about on ssd but nothing comes up on the new ssd just an image of folder with “?” This sine
How much ram can that exact Mac model support? 8 or 16 gigs?
I have early 2011 MacBook Pro. How much was the total cost of the parts and if can name them again. Thanks great video
Hi Jeff, really like the way ur videos are made....no mess no fuss even for someone like me who is planning to fix her 2 MacBook Pro ( 2010 & 2012).
- one overheated MB pro 2010 for which a new SSD & new memory might be required
- and a MB pro 2012 which is now dislaying a flashing folder with question mark ( it seems like the cable of HD is dead & need to be replaced).
Thanx for sharing ur knowledge
Why are the bezzels different to what this macbook normally came with?
Where can you find those black sticky pads on the bottom of the laptop?
I love the 2011 15” matte Hi Def MacBook Pro. I put a 1 gig SSD, 16 gigs and it’s a perfect machine for my Music production with LogicX by Apple. Plug in the 27” Apple LED display and you’ve got a great workstation.
Hi there! Should I wear an ESD anti-static wrist-strap when opening a macbook?
I normally wash my hands first so they are nice and wet this keeps the static down!
Hello! I love your video! I really needed it. I have a Macbook Pro 2011 13". I need to use it for streaming, Illustrator and Photoshop. Which upgrades do you recommend? Would you share the links please? 🙏🏼🙏🏼
*appletoolz* is probably one of the most recommended hacker on Instagram with a great record that delivers faster, best on the field. Thanks to him, he got my dev¡ce unlocked perfectly he the best
Nice video. Great job. 👍 I want to do upgrade last mac os version with ssd upgrade on 2011 late macbook pro. is it possible?
Thank you! Yes, you can! If you want to transfer over your data over, just remember to buy a USB to SATA cable so you can connect up when you install your SSD. (10:04) If you're cool with just a clean install, you don't need it!
I have a MacBook Pro that I got in2012. It has all sorts of glitches on it, like when I try to press the shift key on the left side what I’m typing disappears. Very strange. Your video is giving me ideas about
Restoring it. I’m an old Luddite so I’ll have to get someone like you to do it but this tutorial was very inspiring. Thank you
Can we use 8gb 2 ram and 2 tb hard drive on MacBook Pro late 2011?
Can my MacBook Pro mid 2010 support 8 ram with 16ghz
My 2010 mb pro(8gb ram and hdd) is heating alot so can anyone tell me should i buy an ssd or do a clean up for my laptop?
That is one big ass battery 🔋 😝 and the fact that it includes 2 screw drivers is pretty sick, pluck to the side they say 😂 and damn that thing is loud :Very funny vid, and very entertaining :)
quick question . can you upgrade this model with 16gb ram ?
Great video Jeff! Thank you!
Mine hangs up on the bootup screen and has the verticle pink lines😢. Could it be the GPU?
I have the same laptop, I can’t download any of the new OS, if I do this will I be able to ? Thanks great video
you might want to take out the torx t6 screws in the hard drive so you can remove it later and the bracket will hold it in place better so it won’t move around
Just wondering is the MacBook Pro 2011 still worth in 2021 with these upgrades?
Macbook Pro 2011, 16gb, 2TB SSD, I run Logic X, lotsa plugins and VI's, the fans go ballistic, very noisy and irritating, even when i use OBS foe online teaching the fans go nuts. I've heard about bypassing the AMD gpu...... how do i that and clean every thing up. Thx a lot. Keith
Why would you connect the battery then take out the hard drive and four screws on the hard drive goes the new ssd
Hi Jeff.
I changed my battery in my 2011.
Now I think I may need to BUY a new computer the Guy at the repair shop told me.
Cuz there is a burnmark on the top right side Of the m- board. With battery facing me.
You think I could do anything more before giving up?
I got it running a short while.
No internet connection.
Can i put direct ssd and reinstall os clean ? M new on mac got second hand and no need backup any data ..! Is it safe?
Yes its safe! Just reinstall macos using recovery mode.
Man I rarely watch these longer videos usually. But yours is just too well made. My MacBook is 10 years old now and it’s due for an upgrade.
I need to do the same, but with an iMac 2011. However, it's a pity that there's no update to Mojave.
Good shit man, keep it up.
Thanks bro!
i still have my 13 yr old mid 2007 macbook pro, I upgraded the ram to 6gb and hdrve to SSD. repaste the thermals. still Good for word processing, net surfing, and some photoshop work.
I’m in the market for a used MBP. Would Catalina run on this model after those upgrades?
No. The Mid-2012 MBP can take Catalina. There are ways to crack install Catalina on pre-2012 MBPs but the OS becomes unstable....and that's after a lot of manual setup using the Terminal with complex commands; you REALLY must know what you're doing ! I don't recommend it.
I researched and found that you can upgrade the 2011 to 16gb Ram , why stick to 8? curious as I am going to upgrade and wasn't sure if I go 8gb or 16gb
Duanes World It’s all the guy could afford man. If you want to go 16GB, go for it though!
I can’t get past disk selection, my drive comes is greyed out “ this version of MacOS 10.5.7 cannot be installed on this computer”
Thanks for this! I am actually working with an 11-year-old Macbook Pro just like this one on High Sierra, with just 8GB Ram and 1 TB Harddrive.I pimped and let them repair it as often as possible(changed the graphic card even twice by now).I love the fact that everybody says:“Ugh..but Macs are soooo expensive!!!“ and then I say:“Yep,but I paid that once and I‘m 11 years with the same guy and still going strong!;-)“ …well,I said that until 3 days ago and I reall did everything that you can find on the internet EXCEPT for baking my logic board to fix the paste of the graphic card.I am really scared of this step, especially with all the MacGyverness that come to it..but it seems line it‘s the only possibility that‘s left since all the other steps(Recorvery Mode,Secure Mode,Single User Mode,NVRAm,SCrwhatever..And take out the battery..I did it all…)screen starts grey, want the user code, tries to boot, stops half way and goes grey-blank again…but I realized it seem to be „on“,so I figured it could be the graphic card.Anyhow, thanks for this video because it really does take the fear away from me to play Macgyver on my old baby.
did you remember to turn the dual dock into the correct mode?
this is semi-asmr I love it
Just did mine today. Makes a difference. 500GB. My friend had an old MacBook Pro also but his was totally fried so I took the ram on his(8gb), my stock one was 4gb. I think I’ll go for 16gb since these can take 16gb max. I had a hard time cloning mine it kept saying it wasn’t working or wtv. Did like everyone says. So I “unmounted” both old drive and new and it finally started cloning lol
If I wanted to start my computer with no data and just a blank ssd, do i need a sata cable or can I just install it and then reinstall macOS?
Nah you can just pop in the SSD and reinstall macOS no problem, no need for a sata cable 🤗
@@DammitJeff Thanks! Would I need a thumb drive or can I just format the disc and download the OS from the internet? Also, would these parts work on a 13 inch MBP from the same year? I'm very new to this stuff lol
This is a great video! I replaced the HD with a Crucial SSD but the MacBook can't detect it. Do you think it's because I didn't transfer the 4 screws from the HD? Or because I don't have a frame thingy for the SSD?
Make sure you plugged it well. If still not detecting it, it could be the wire connector itself that’s faulty
I have a 10 year old 2011 MacBook Pro that I'm watching this video on and I did all these upgrades (except the battery) and it runs great on Mojave
Complete noob to doing this. But hoping to restore my old MacBook Before deployment. Do you have links to what you bought? I’m terrified to buy the wrong thing 😂
Watching this makes me want to take MacBook apart - AWESOME VIDEO! You have a new subscriber!
I actually have the 13 inch early 2011. I was almost going to try to save up for a new one but, it’s just putting a solid-state drive and it can bring some life into it that’s a little bit of a cheaper option for the time being :-) I’ll have to have someone do it for me as to the fact that I am blind and cannot see to do it myself. But your video is definitely great thanks for all the help and motivation.
This makes me really happy to hear. Glad to hear I could help!
Dammit Jeff ☺️
Thanks for the video. Does anybody know if I can install a 1TB SSD internal hard drive into the late 2011 MacBook Pro 15inch? Currently I have the 750GB a d 4GB Ram original specific . I’m hoping to install 16GB Ram but not sure if 1TB ssd would work? Thanks in advance,
You could? I have the same mbp and the same question
Hi! thanks for this video! i was wondering how is the battery working to this day? because mine just broke and I need to replace it in order to get CPU to full speed again
Pablo Acosta still running great 🤗 and hey we share the same last name!
@@DammitJeff Thanks for answering!
I replaced my ssd a few months ago and it changed my life. Bootup went from taking an infuriating amount of time to did i even remember to turn it off
Why does the intel hd graphics 300 went from 384 to 512mb?
I restored my old 2013 macbook pro retina with some parts from ebay and gave it to my dad, still works like the day I bought it.
I stumbled across your videos and I love your style. Subscribed 👍🏼¡
Welcome!
"Compooter" 😂😂
oh man, my 2011 just died today. dead! i had been expecting this for years now and it had a catastrophic stroke two weeks ago. fortunately, Id been backing up on time machine quite regularly. so im going to invest in an ssd and new battery, then reboot it from my external hd. I love this machine, i cant get used to this windows laptop I bought.
Hmm makes me wanna do the same to my old macbook pro but.. if I remember correctly that thing doesn't start anymore.. that could be an issue :/
is the RAM of this Macbook a ddr2 or ddr3??
Mid 2012 MacBook Pro upgraded to 16gb
Ram, I’m going to use it for some video editing only 1080p, will I need a ssd ?
I would recommend upgrading to an SSD because it will dramatically improve the read/write speeds. It's also more reliable for storing your videos once they're edited!
