To be honest, main subject of upgrading the previous series to a new one isn't the right comparison. I don't know a single person in the world, that isn't the biggest PC enthusiast, but just a regular gamer, who actually buys new GPU every generation. Let's say you bought 3060 Ti back in the days and you see that new 400$ GPU is just few percent faster. Are you down because of that? Quite the opposite. I means you'll get by another 2years with your purchase, because the games themselves won't be able to push hardware limits again, since most people are sitting on entry-mainstream-mid GPU's.
But that falls quicly when you realize that you had this, almost exact same path, just 2 years ago. Minus the DLSS 3, AV1 and better power efficiency when it comes to NV cards. I myself was in the GTX 1660 Super category, was waiting for the good 200$ GPU upgrade for years and I finally caved, bought 4070 and that was that. If I weren't this succesful over these years when it comes to salary, I'd probably still look for 200-ish dollars cards and there... is none good option, aside from 2y old RX 6600. Which shows how terrible GPU market has become because of the second crypto boom and NV/AMD pure greed. Sad times, especially for budget gamers, and I'd probably quit gaming alltogether if I was in the 200$ gpu market still. That, or I'd just buy a console.

People keep saying “conditioning”, but it’s not exactly that simple. To a certain extent people conditioned companies to raise prices.
Honestly there’s a enough blame to go around. During the pandemic and subsequent years, People have demonstrated to these companies that gpu demand is less elastic than they thought. If the pandemic demand was just an outlier, and while gpu sales have declined, they would have and should fallen off a cliff, and that’s not what happened. Basically people are willing to pay thousands of dollars for Pc gaming, and a significant portion will be the GPU. There’s something wrong with the demand , not just the supply portion of the graph.

      Who cares?
They have product that name is 7900XT and they have product that name is 7800XT. It does not matter what you think the names should be that is irrelevant!
If Sony would release a GPU that has name Fast, and another GPU that name is not so fast and third that is named "Even slower"... what does that mean? Nothing! All that matter is how much speed you get for the money you spend! The name is irrelevant!
if 5060 will cost $2000, do you care... if it is double the speed of 4090ti. If 5090ti cost $300, do you care... if it it little bit slower than 4060... The name does not mean anything. Only the price and the performance.
Current gen prices and performance suck, but the naming is not a problem!
If 7900XT or 4080 would cost $600 I would not mind the name! If 7900XT and 4080 would be double the speed they are, I would not mind the name! Only the price and performance!
The names are actually much better this year! Every xx60 series has same GPU chip, simple and easy! Every xx70 has same chip, xx80 has different chip and xx90 has different chip! What could be better in naming! 4080 12gb would have been bad name! But that we did get rid of. Now every different GPU chip has different product name. That is good! Until Nvidia f** **p it again when they release some new version... Hopefully that does not happen...

For the longest time the rule I follow is to don't worry about upgrades until your games aren't performing the way you need them to perform. For instance, if you're starting to see more and more 30 fps averages, and you upgrade to something that gets you 60+ fps, you WILL notice that and feel good about that upgrade. But if you're getting 80 fps and your upgrade gets you to 110 fps, even if you have a high refresh rate monitor you might find yourself sitting there wondering if it was worth it.

    • @darthwiizius
      @darthwiizius Před rokem +18

Exactly, I had a GTX770 which I ran lowering the settings over the 4 years I used it until it just couldn't keep things smooth while looking dated. Replaced it with a 1060 6GB and used that for 3 years until it started struggling to get 60FPS at 1080P, replaced that with a 2060S 3.25 years ago and that's holding up very well and it might become a 5 year card for me due to all the upscaling tech being employed now. I've yet to get a game it struggles with. The best part is it just means next upgrade will be cheap because RTX5000 will be just out so 3000 cards and AMD alternatives will be out there for peanuts. As it stands you can get 2080tis for as little as half the price of a new 4060ti so if I wanted an upgrade now I'd probably just get one of those and a tube of thermal paste.

I have zero regrets, as gpu pricing has been absolutely crazy until lately. Like you mentioned though unless your spending more money you are not likely to see much of an improvement. I typically wait 3-5 years for upgrades. Went from a R7-1700 to a R7-5800x3d. I feel like my next upgrade won't be until failure or drastic performance improvement (70%+) for around the same $. I do do other things on my computer than game, so just the extra screen real estate of not only adding four inches of size, but also quadrupling the resolution is better for me than all the high refresh rates in the world. I don't get that much happier from having top of the line things than things that are "good enough for my purposes". As long as it's a noticable upgrade, I'll be happy. Went from a 4650K to a 5600x and SATA-SSD to nVMNE, and jumped a DDR generation. Still nothing special, but the generation gap is huge.
And it was pretty not until I got the 4K monitor that my old box with a 980 Ti started feeling a bit old. So even the probably worst 3060 12GB on the market, the Asus Phoenix single fan model was a nice performance upgrade. At least I got it for about 100 bucks cheaper than a new one. My mate bought a new rig maybe.. half a year ago or so, a pretty nice 13600K DDR5 rig with a nice 12GB 3060. I trail him by 500 3D marks and he paid more for his CPU than I paid for mobo, CPU, RAM and a 1TB nVME drive.
Sure, outside of gaming his rig beats the crap out of mine. But unlike me, he pretty much only games. And we are both pretty much just as happy with our upgrades as the other. My low-end 3060? Performs well within specs for its.. well, specs.

I agree with most of the stuff here, but there are still some issues in the logic and it is the reasons a lot of people will still buy these cards.
In the example of Pascal owners with a 1070 , yes the 90% performance increase for the same price with the 3060ti would have been a good time to upgrade, but the problem is that 3060ti at MSRP were non existent for a long time after the initial launch. And say about 1 year ago when you could have found 3060ti's at MSRP or close to it, then the rumors of the 40 series came out and all the leaks (including what was covered on HUB) were indicating 2x performance compared to the 30 series so naturally people were thinking it's worth to wait a bit more. Joke was on us because those rumors were close to true for the 4090 compared to it's 3090 counterpart, but no one expected nVidia to decrease this performance bump the further down the stack you went (opposite to how previous generations went) to the point where you reach the 4060ti that is pretty much equal to a 3060ti.
So yeah we now have 10 and 20 series owners who skipped 30 series due to the crazy mining boom and who eagerly anticipated the 40 series thinking it would be better and are having a very hard time waiting another 2 years for 50 series (mind you the 5090 might come earlier then this , but the 5060 for sure won't).

I dont really play 4k and dont have a 1440p monitor. Plus I got my card used from an amazing seller so I didnt really get hit with the unreasonable price hike the 20 series got, combined with the performance gains of the 30 series. Good points made Steve. I can't find a smart upgrade to my 2080ti right now.
The 4080 costs the same as the 2080ti did (in the UK) but really doesn't seem enough of a performance leap to justify the cost.
The 4090 has the performance leap that I would expect two generations later. But the price is insulting and the high power draw makes it much more expensive long term.
The 7900XTX very nearly swayed me based on raw performance and price. But again the high power draw on decent partner cards was a turn off (similar draw than the 4090 but for less relative performance). Along with AMDs drivers having a bad rep and their cards missing some Nvidia only features that I do use and would miss. So on deeper consideration the 7900XTX didn't actually seem cheap enough to compensate for those.

I've been stuck on a 1080ti forever trying to get a decent upgrade so far the only decent upgrade costs a fortune. its only this year however I have felt the biggest performance impact on this old beast of a card with the new Starfield game really hammering the fps down. most games I have have ran well on fairly high to ultra settings but I try to price a decent card that is a huge leap and end up looking at cards nearly 3x the price. the 3090ti is a beast for the price though and was one I was considering. 7900 XTX looks like a fairly good card and then theres the 4090 all cost about as much as the entire system when I built it 3-4 years ago. as I carry the gpu over between builds. I did try the Ark 770 gpu mainly bought it for AV1 video encoding its very good at that. I mean even hogwarts legacy runs fine on the 1080ti. but Starfield its barely breaking 30 fps and starting to finally really show its age at this point. just the upgrade path is leading me more to AMD at this point for the 7900 XTX as it seems to be quite a beast. I ran a Ryzen 3900x for a while and ended up having to go back to a 8700k because it died. so yep time to shell out thousands on a new build. lol just scraping by. 8700k runs nice at 5ghz though so that's something I guess.

Nice to hear, I'm looking at upgrading from a oc'd G3258 and 1050ti to R5 7600 and a used 3060ti as they're about US$250 in my area. All the used 6700xt's are 30% more for what I understand is similar performance. I know anything will be a massive upgrade but honestly the only new title I've bought in years was Hogwarts and that's diving the upgrade. I figure getting a 3060ti would be enough to go ultra at 1080p which is all I need as it's on my living room TV. In the future years when I upgrade the TV to 4k hopefully there will be many more Gpu options that'll support that then. More cost effectively.

If you somehow managed to make it this far on a g3258 (even if oc'ed to the moon). You would be served well to just drop in a 4790k or 5775c, both still hold up quite well and will blow away your dual core in any remotely modern title.

@solocamo3654 Haha no it's not oc'd to the moon. The most used games in our house have been Kerbal space program and Timberborn until Hogwarts came out and the pc is obviously stuttering a lot with that. Looks like I can get a 4790k for US$100 locally so I'll take the recommendation for consideration, thanks. I'm assuming though when the TV finally goes and I move up to 4k with gpu (hopefully by then more cost effectively) it'll still require moving to another cpu/ram/mobo? My original thought was just to do that now. I'm also concerned that my pcie 3.0 motherboard won't be able to get me the full output of a 3060ti/6700xt+ I'd like to have 1080p (for now) with all the bells and whistles. Appreciate the reply. As you can tell I've been out of the gaming/PC community for many years and have spent the last week learning a lot as I try to get back up to speed.

However, if money is tight the 4790k even if used short term can still be sold when you have enough for a proper new system. As an example I kept my 4790k from 2014 until 2021 as my main PC, and it was last paired with a gpu close enough in performance to the 3060ti (oc'ed Radeon VII). That said, I had sold that card and upgraded to a 6900XT when I moved to my i9 10900 in 2021 and at 4k, pci-e 3.0 was never a problem. I only recently moved to a 11900k as I was reusing my 10900 for another system. I'm now using pci-e 4.0 and haven't noticed any difference due to the pci-e change. For the games you play, you may find that a 4790k will still last you at 4k, just don't expect performance to match the latest and greatest cpu's by any stretch. I'm still using my 4790k as my living room gaming PC and it's rock solid outside of heavily threaded games (such as BF2042) but it was still definitely usable.

I think the best thing to do these days is just to ask oneself. How many of the games I play actually justify an upgrade? Can I wait playing those games and concentrate on the ones that run well on my hardware? And are those few games that require more modern hardware, worth the cost!?
I currently have a RX6800 due to my interest in VR.... but if I didn't have VR, I would realize that I mostly play older online games, simpler indie games, and older backlog games (like Titanfall2, Witcher 3, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Prey etc.) To this day, the only two modern games that interest me are the new Phantom Liberty Cyberpunk expansion and Baldur's Gate III.... I could still wait to play those games... In the light of that, objectively something like a GTX1060 or 1070 would suffice for 99% of my gaming needs outside of VR. And even if I want to play those two games, I would actually be leaning much more towards signing up for Geforce Now under a 2-3month period to complete those games and go back to my other games. It's just way more cost effective than keeping up to date with the latest tech. Latency is a thing, but If I play games more casually through Geforce Now with a controller it actually feels good. Server latency is 2ms, so it mostly feels like playing games with double buffer vsync.

Because with a mid-ranged GPU, every 1-2 years your GPU is useless in the same resolution because of all the post processing it's being added, even if the amount of geometry is the same (not even gonna count the VRAM issue from better textures), you need to go from either ultra/ high settings (which don't look realistic enough so what is the point of dropping them anyways, the point is down below) to mid, and then low each year, which means that you need to buy a GPU every year or 2, which is actually a premeditated tactic so you are forced to buy the top of the line GPU so you can keep it at best 5 years so the GPU companies can make the most profit they can instantly, or if you can't, you still forced to buy a mid-range one once per 1-2 years which is even better for them because it becomes the same thing as a subscription and when they jack up the prices you get the worst value while they always profit for more.
That's how the GPU market works, especially since NGreedia took the lead since 2012 and has set the standard, even AMD takes advantage of this but to a less degree so it's not seen as greedy as NGreedia, so don't think AMD is a saint, we all saw the price increase when 5700XT was launched only because NGreedia did a price increase first and AMD followed.

I upgraded from the R9 290X to a Gigabyte RX-6700XT Aorus Elite on 4 November 2021 and it cost me R13,199 (ZAR) (at the time $867). This upgrade as benchmarked by myself afforded me between 80% to 100% performance increase in FPS depending on the game. The problem is on my 60Hz 1080p 23" screen I cannot see any difference in performance. I see no change. Now to appreciate the monster that I bought I have to buy a 27" 1440p screen with high refresh rate over 100Hz. Those cost around R7500 or more ~ $415. But I play very nice on my 1080p screen. Hogwarts legacy, RDR2, Far Cry 6 and I've pre-ordered Star Field already. These all play very nicely. So I'm struggling to find a reason to give out money on a new screen when the old one still works really well. I bought a used 1050 back in 2017 for 100€, at the time my target was the witcher 3 at 30 fps, while waiting for GPU prices to fall, the Witcher played at 40 - 50 fps so I ended up keeping the card until 2023, then I got a 5600XT for 125€, it was a massive upgrade for around the same price, I get 60fps on Cyberpunk, except when I'm CPU limited, so the next upgrade would be to swap my 2600k for a Ryzen 3600 or 5600 if I can find a Mobo+Ram+CPU bundle for under 100€, if not I'll just wait some more

This is not always the case over the years/decades. Lots of times you are able to get a decent upgrade with a decent price, particularly in the 2nd hand market. Personally, I usually swap GPUs when I can get one that is around 150% of performance of my previous one. I upgraded from a 2080 Super (bought late 2019) to a 3080 Ti (used, late 2022), and I'm happy with the performance jump. Sold my older card and a bit of money back which was nice.

Hey Steve/All, some relevant experience here: In 2018 i finally had the money to fulfill my childhood dream and build stupid expensive PC. Top of the line x470 board with 2600x (with the idea for an upgrade when AM4 gets end of life) for GPU i put 1080TI. 20xx series was just announced and i realized that discounted 1080TI is the best way and you know upgrade later. Few months later my 1080TI decided to render a real life explosion in my PC so i got the hated 2080 replacement and it had served me well until recently. Yes 8gb VRAM is making my life miserable at 1440p. In december of last year i got a 5800x following my upgrade plans and as expected my productivity tasks shoot through the roof, but the second the new gen GPU's where out i realized i will not be upgrading it this gen. I am not a fan boy i care not about brands at all. All i care about is what i can buy for x amount of money and which is the best. This gen is just bad to the point where people i know (hard core PC gamers) just got playstations. I really hope next gen redeems itself or we might be looking at the death of PC gaming as we know it.

ofc they are. the 3080 was far too good in theory, so good in fact, that the 90 was basically dog shit for anything but production work. now they made the 80 and below more expensive, closing the price gap and at the same time the performance difference to the 90 increased. meaning much worse value due to two factors for anything else.

The weird part is AMD becoming competitive again has driving the price of CPUs down across the board, but has not done the same thing for GPUs. I think it has two parts, AMD taking up til now to get close enough and accepting that they can make a lot of money if they do not compete on price starting with this generation. Just accept higher pricing and screwing over gamers. I hope that doesn't spread to CPUs in the future because it is new behavior for them in the GPU space.

Running an old system with a 1070ti and lots of lower end parts in a crappy case. I'm gonna hold out to replace the whole system, waiting on the 5090. I've saved for years and could get a new system now with a 4090, but I figure it's worth the wait for a variety of reasons. 1-I want to go 4K and by then the new gen LG OLED monitors will be out 32" or 45" ultrawide in 4K at 240Hz with a next gen display port. Currently if I want 4K OLED I'm stuck with the 42" TV or the 42" Asus monitor with the lower pixel density and the 120Hz refresh rate and have to use HDMI to maybe saturate that. 2-The 5090 will probably actually be able to push 4K ultra towards the 240Hz refresh rate and should have the next gen display port. 3-New power cables that don't like to catch on fire. 4-By then I should be able to get the 15th gen Intel CPU so my new motherboard will be good for a while rather than one gen. 5-By then the new Corsair Link fan systems should have come down in price quite a bit and there should be plenty of competition on the market for minimal wiring ARGB cooling to choose from. 6-By then DDR5 ram will be much cheaper and have the kinks worked out. 7-High speed Solid State storage is already dropping in price like a rock, by then it'll be dirt cheap. I have a game library of well over 1500 games and I like to have them all there at the ready cause I'm a weirdo. 8-I am pushing 60 years old and anything past 4K Ultra settings 240Hz will be simply beyond my ability to perceive so this new rig should last me till I croak.

My current PC cost in 2016 around 700$ so I see this as an absolute win for a good future-proof PC.
