  • r/Maliciouscompliance In today's episode, we have a student to grapples with his school's strict dress code. OP is a bisexual student who is constantly bullied by his classmates, who steal his belt. He retaliates by wearing a gay pride belt to school, which also gets stolen. When the bully gets caught with the stolen belt, the bully is stuck with an impossible choice: Does he admit he stole it and get in trouble, or does he say the belt is his and then get bullied himself?

Or that they have very high standards. Reality is that a student graduating in a specific field is almost never fit to work in this field before having a real training, and won't be any efficient before at the very least one year of work.
I've known a few professors that wouldn't give you a passing grade if you couldn't manage to make you project be "acceptable for a junior". And it looks fair to me.
At that time I was studying to be a graphic designer, and looking back with my non-graphic-designer eyes (I left this field), not even 5% of my class's work could be regarded as acceptable work for a junior.

I knew it was him searching it between classes cause one of my friends had seen him doing it when she was walking between the bathroom and her class. So one day I left a greasy brown paper bag in my locker with a bag of grass clippings in a ziplock bag inside with along with a note saying " Now that I have your attention please close my lunchbox after your locker searches, I like my sandwich cold. While I don't disagree with, there's the problem that a C in the United States is still 70 to 79% of questions answered correctly. In most other countries even Canada grades run very differently. In the UK for example a 70-100 is an A. Many countries don't even have letter grades, and a 40 to 49 is a C. In the UK a C is the lowest passing grade, but considering a US F is anything below a 59, well, it's certainly harder to fail when you have 19 more points to work with.

The more I think about the situation, the more sus it is. I mean, OP mentioned that he was latinx, that means that he, like me (I am from PTY), would use the transalted terms of priest and father that are used in Spanish. Moreover, OP's family were members of said Church which means that they would use the correct terms, but he didn't.
Another sus point is the belt. In my country, uniforms are applied to every school, public or private. That means that all schools mandate a specific belt color for their uniforns. When a school is strict about uniforms, wouldn't the school's rule cover the color of the belt? If it is as strict as OP says, then yes, it should cover the belt's color. Such school wouldn't make that type of rookie mistake. This means that if OP truly wore a rainbow colored belt to school, the school would be in their right to apply school rules on him. Meaning detetion. And yet, a note from his mother was enough, and he was only called in for a scolding? The rest will either start out but not follow through, or just do your own thing. 5% of you will receive an A. Make flash cards of every new-to-you term, word on front, definition on back. Practice them back to front and front to back til you have them down pat. Those go in one shoebox as you add new cards with each week's assignment. Review before each test." Being proud or bragging about it is pretty much a douchebag move but there are common polices which frequently result in students being placed in classes they shoudlnt be in. Either becuase they are not quite to the same academic level the class is intended resultign in them being unprepared academically or otherwise unable to deal with the pace of instruction and courseload. This sort of thing has caused many fairly brilliant people to be treated as if they are inadequate and/or fail, but at least the schools have met their quotas.

I used to have a philosophy professor who happily announced to our class that she never gave A's to ANYONE. They wouldn't let me change sections. Tutors were only available when I had to be at work (you know, to afford books, etc.). I even said to a woman in their office "so, I'm expected to fail?" She nodded her head, yes. Yeah, folks, take charge of your education, advocate for yourself HARD; the schools essentially work for you not the other way around (by the way, I'm not saying act entitled, just make sure you're getting what's expected of the education you're paying for (whether that is by scholarships you earned, taxes you and/or your family pays, etc.), and you put in what's expected and then some so they can't use it against you).

As much as I’ve heard Latinx is supposed to be basically “Latino + Females + Diversity” (such as LGBT or other groups) because Latino is predominantly a “male” word based on Spanish. But that’s all I know about it.
But it does make sense that they’d use Latinx since they are a part of a diverse group (LGBT) and they are Hispanic, so really it’s their choice to use the term if they so choose. Some people don’t use new terms because they believe the old terms should morph into the new meaning, others believe new terms should be used to disconnect from errors of the past terms.

Personally, I don't know any professors who "take pride" in giving few A grades. In my country it's more like: at uni there is the requirement that tests are designed in a way that produces a Gaussian bell curve in the grade distribution with C as the average result. If the results average is too good, it means the test was too easy and it has to be repeated with higher difficulty. In turn, if the average is too bad, the test has to be repeated with lesser difficulty.
It's in everybody's best interest, when exams are designed to yield few As and few failures. And when a prof says they give few As that is them saying: I'm good at designing exams that create meaningful grade distributions and that don't have to be repeated. Saves everybody unnecessary work.

Such a system/policy is dumb because of various reasons:
      1. Discourage of learning: What would happen, when people learn more: The exam gets harder. So there is no benefit in learning.
      2. Discourage of helping: If you only receive a good grade when other have bad, or at least worse, grades, then why would you help them, when it would harm your grades?
      3. Grades becomes meaningless: It is already hard to compare grades between different schools, but this policy would make it impossible to compare grades of the same school. A C-grade could be "better" than an A-grade, just because the exam was harder in that year because the students were better.

    • @cainampi
      @cainampi Před 3 lety +1

      @@Ainogard
If there is no benefit to learning except the higher grade, then school probably isn't for you. Early on students need to be forced, but once you learn enough to not be a drain on society, then if you don't want to learn, don't.
Study some with others and you find that in a situation where you are helping others to excel, you learn the material better than you can explain it. If you are in a group and getting the worst grade in the group, you are likely still scoring better than leaving the group.
Grades are already meaningless. They let you know how you are doing compared to your classmates (at the time, not through time). Grades change over time as teachers change (hopefully the teacher is improving).
Note that in the story the whole group studied, and did well, but beyond just memorizing the question/answer pair they had to understand the concepts (in case numbers changed). Teachers don't want you to fail, they want you to understand. In math and science our teachers in high school did much the same, but the numbers changed, so you had to understand where to plug in what numbers to the given equations, and where to use the given equations.

I was just listening to a r/maliciouscompliance episode on CZcams, about a professor that only gave 5 A's a semester - and basically cheated in order to achieve that.
The story reminds me of a professor , whose name sounds very like Mr. Shithead, that I had had at a US West-Coast junior college in the late 1960s. Mr. Shithead was well known for NOT giving out ANY A's in his history course, and actually FAILING over 1/2 of the students in his classes.
As a music major planning to attend his class with 8 other music students, I got together with my friends and launched a little plot: This was not the only class that would accepted for the history requirement. We registered for this class, and had to buy the books as part of the registration.
The first day of class, we each dropped his class and registered for the other. Some of us kept our books because they were an excellent set of references for our other history class.
The next day, after registering for the other class, I (and the other students) were called into the Dean's office, to investigate why we did what he did - it was going around the school that Mr. Shithead had had a quarter of his class unregister on day one, the news got around the community, and the staff of the college were suffering a slap in the face because of it.
I got an A in the other history course. Mr. Shithead retired early at the end of that year.

I absolutely do not understand professors/teachers who are proud that most of their class fails. Their job is literally to teach us the material. That is what they get paid to do. Why would they be proud that their students aren’t learning from them?

    > Latinx
99% of the people I see using that are white americans. Not latinos. Even spanish speakers who support a gender neutral term more commonly use latine.
    > Pastor
    For a catholic priest?
    > 20 belts
    Rite mate.
Bi dude living in a 70+% catholic country here... this sounds like a good ol' r/thathappened.

I had a professor like that, at the beginning he told us that only 20/30% of students past... this was a calculus class for animation students. I don’t know why I had that class, but it was stressful as hell

1:36 I don’t know why, but using a southern accent for a Catholic preacher made me laugh. Not saying there’s no Catholics down south, but there’s definitely plenty of Baptists. 🤣

Right away, hearing that the catholic school from the first story being so bigoted was a bit personal. I went to a catholic private high school - St. Vincent St. Mary’s - but they actually openly supported the LGBT community. My friends there even helped me come to the realization that I was transgender. Schools that teach people bigotry and hatred, however, help contribute to the ongoing toxicity present in modern society, imo. Teach people to love one another despite your differences - not to hate them for it.

The professor kept pulling the same questions from his hat and honestly didn't expect engineering students to figure it out? Proves to show the measurement of intelligence isn't linear.

Dude it's a catholic school, not a baptist school. You don't have to have a southern accent when playing the pastor, a Boston accent would suffice lol

It's always aggravating to hear about the bad Catholic schools... When they're overly conservative they are ironically a living Hell =|
And the whole not judging others thing seems to fly out the window. Glad I'm in a good Catholic Church.
EDIT: And that second one reminded me of a story my mother told me about her college experience. Wherein she was a straight A graduate. One professor took a dislike to her after she argued Edgar Allan Poe's work was sometimes influenced by his drug abuse (a rather well known fact about him).
At the end of his class he graded her a B+. When she questioned this he replied "Someone had to stop your perfect streak!" During this time my mother wasn't the strong advocate she was today, but that likely could have resulted in some problems for the professor had she reported it :O
