He kept PBS going! He's the reason why we got to see Monty Python, Dr. Who, the Goodies and all of the great "English Invasion of comedy" in the USA on PBS in my bedroom B/W TV set in the 80's!
Fred Rogers was a badass.
As a Brit growing up in the 70's I never knew of Mr Rogers, but we did get another PBS series, Sesame Street from The Childrens Television Workshop. It was so much better than the BBC offering, Play School, at the time.
I also learnt to count in Spanish as well as English, but it also led to some great playground bullying so poor people such as myself whose parents could not afford the latest Adidas or Sergio Tacchini would be called "Oscar" (who lived in a Sesame Street bin).
Despite all the vibrant diversity and political correctness, kids are just ruthless cruel bastards.
It seems Mr Rogers tried his best, but failed.He didn't even make it to the BBC.

"Badass" probably isn't the first word that comes to most people's minds when they think of Mister Rogers, but he absolutely was one. Thank you for producing this.

I lost it.
Best of all, Mr. Rogers realized it and made it a point to look directly into his eyes to say it knowing it could be one of their last times together with it being the last day of the show. How precious for someone to try to get through all those years and to keep trying.

I might be an agnostic/atheist, but those are some great words from the Bible. Mr. Rogers lived them in a way few human beings could hope to match.

I used to fantasize that he was my father when i grew up watching him. My own father had a terrible temper & was judgemental & hateful towards others. Mr. Rogers was my proof that not all men were like that & I loooved his show!
Kraye Inluv: I think Mr. Rogers was exactly that for a lot of kids! He brought order and peace to those who needed it. Watching his routine of coming inside, changing his shoes and singing “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood” was really comforting. RIP, Mr. Rogers! 💖
My Dad was Fantastic in that he was very discerning, wise to the ways of most men, handsome, a genius, ...! a bit of a temper he grew out of being an adult isn't easy either.
Mister Rogers is one of those rare human beings who gets better with every new thing you learn about him.

My dad put in phones at the PBS station in Pittsburgh, he actually got to talk to Fred Rogers. He got his autograph and Mr.McFeelie's as well, but we lost it in a flood.
Another fact: Someone stole Mr.Roger's car and was returned to him when they found out it was his car with an apology letter.

I just have to tell you how deeply meaningful this was to me. My little brother died many years ago. One of the joys of his sad short life was 'Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.' Please stop teaching your ill informed version of the Gospel. Jesus's message was love, acceptance, and righteousness. I can't speak to Bob Ross, he was a very private man, but Fred Rogers was pro gay rights, because gay rights are human rights. He would have been pro trans rights, because trans rights are human rights.
In an era of Jim Crow politics, Rogers normalized inter-race relations.
Now go re-read your good book and focus less on the black letters and more on the red ones.

when i was younger and watched mister roger, i never realized i was watching re-runs. i thought he was still making them day by day. i remember being told that he had died one morning and i cried so much. i felt like i had lost someone close to me and someone who loved me very much. mister rogers was one of the best shows i watched as a kid. i think i had taped some of the episodes myself.
I watched him in 1989 and I was 6 when I heard he died in 2009 I cried for 3 hours and didn’t want to leave my house for work.

i was born in a non english speaking country, so i never watched mister roger's show, but after watching this video i rushed on the web and watched a few episodes, and i say, he was a wonderful human being with an amazing message. i think more children all over the world should have acess to his great show.
One more fact: His reason for vegetarianism was "I don't want to eat anything that has a mother." In my opinion, this is one of the best ways someone could say animals have souls.
Albert Nave But, plants are just as alive as animals and are created through sexual reproduction as well. Plants have parents, too. I love Mr. Rogers but, the "don't eat animals because they're similar to us" argument doesn't make much sense when you can say the same about plants. The truth is in order to sustain life, we must eat living things. I agree with the vegetarian diet as a healthy alternative to a red meat diet but, that doesn't negate that both diets require you to eat living things.

@Doppelganger D Yeah, except literally everything you just said is unconfirmed. We don't know if plants are sentient because we're not even sure definitively what sentience is. We don't know if they feel pain, scientists have argued either side; even PETA admitted this. The Bible has never mentioned a specific diet of Adam and Eve before leaving the Garden of Eden whatsoever. We have no idea what they ate. In fact, the Bible explicitly said they can eat any tree in the Garden except the Tree of Knowledge; God never gave any instructions against eating animals in the Garden of Eden as well as any other plants. It is very possible they ate animals but, again, not confirmed.
Basically, your reasons for why plants are not the same as cattle are not confirmed scientifically or Biblically. In fact, sacrificing lambs, INFANT sheep, was considered an act high praise of God in Biblical times. It is why many call Jesus, "The Lamb of God".

@Doppelganger D - sadly, your comment shows you have not continued your learning throughout your life. You said about plants, "They dont feel pain nor do they think" which has been proven to be false. If they do not have a form of that, they would not be able to warn other plants of danger or produce chemicals to ward off a predator which they do. With our modern devices, there has been scientific record of plants communicating to each other and mostly for the purpose of warning of danger. Do keep in mind at one time people sincerely believed the brain served the purpose of what we now know the heart does.
That we do not know something happens does not mean it doesn't happen. Ignorance is a very sad thing but ignorance can educated. Stupidity cannot. I prefer to think you are ignorant.

My friends lived in a condo in Delaware just south of PA in the early 80's. We were young, long haired, hung over, Grateful Dead heads in tie dyed t-shirts that smelled like beer and cigarettes and stuff... We did know that Mr. Rogers also lived in the condo. We were going out early one morning to buy some smokes after an all night party, and then Mr. Rogers got on the elevator and said, "Hi kids. It's a nice day, isn't it? How are you this morning?" My buddy and I looked at each other through our blood shot eyes and all we could say is, "Yes, fine, Mr.Rogers!"
"Have a nice day." He said.
WE WERE BLOWN AWAY! HE NEVER JUDGED US AT ALL! He was really, really that cool!

Fred Rogers used to have a condo in Florida near where I grew up and occasionally I'd see him walking down the street, sometimes in one of his sweaters. That memory makes me so happy; he was a great man.

my favorite Mr Rogers fact was that he always announced that he was feeding the fish because he got a letter form a blind child who was concerned about them not getting feed.
I thought that was absolutely precious!!! Even if he left to take us on a visit and had not fed the fish when he arrived, he made it a point to feed them when he got back and always told us.

He far surpasses sainthood, as he did not promote wars, as many "saints" did. He did not relish the suffering of the poor, as a very recently canonized "saint" did. He did not persecute those who did not believe as he did, again, as many "saints" did. He loved unconditionally, unlike most of the "saints". He did not believe one had to belong to a special club, to be special, unlike "saints".
He was human, like the rest of us...or at least how the rest of us could be, if we tried. He desired for no one to suffer. He knew we were ALL special and loved us all, without ever knowing us. Fred Rogers was the embodiment of love and acceptance. He will always be remembered for giving so many children such a precious gift as unconditional acceptance and love.

Another fact that's more anecdotal than quantifiable- Any time there's a post/video/blog/article about Mr. Rogers, it's guaranteed to be one of the most polite and positive comments sections the internet has ever seen! Even when one in a thousand is negative and clearly looking for a fight the other commenters, no doubt inspired by Mr. Rogers' example, respond to them in loving ways, telling them that their opinion is valid and they are sure Mr. Rogers would love them just as they are!

Mr. Rogers was my college commencement speaker. I will NEVER forget it. He just got up and sang, I like you just the way you are, and that was pretty much it. He was getting yet another honorary doctorate in the arts for children's programming.

My son watches Daniel Tiger Neighborhood on PBS and its the best show ever, I love it and have found my self emotional at time singing along with my son who is 1.5 years old. Its great thanks for Mr Rogers.
I've heard a lot of people say very kind things about Mr. Rogers. One of the things that stuck out to me was people saying I want to be or be like Mr. Rogers and that's fine. However, if you are one these people who have said this, with all due respect, I think you kinda missed the message he was trying to convey. You shouldn't want to be Mr Rogers after watching his program, you should feel absolutely awesome and content about being yourself. And knowing that you have at least one friend in him just makes it that much more rewarding. I'm not attacking anyone for their opinion, I'm just being subjective. One of the many things that he (along with people who cared about me) taught me was okay to do. He is one of the few people that whenever I see or hear about makes me truly feel like a kid again. And it overwhelms me to the point of tears when I recollect not only how much he fought for me, but how much he sacrificed just for me and many children (and adults) around the world. I was abused as a child, so I had my fair share of being told that I wasn't special, that I was worthless. His program, if only for 30 minutes, was the contrast that I can honestly say, saved my life. I love and miss this man. That is all.
The world needs Mr. Rogers, now more than ever.
He really was a remarkable man. My kids today love Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, which faithfully follows in his footsteps to bring his characters to a new generation. It is produced by the Fred Rogers Institute, so you know they have good people behind it. It was the first show that they watched that taught them things they needed in their daily lives as pre-schoolers.

While I always respected Mr Rogers, I didn't really enjoy the show when I was young and never really thought one way or the other about the person until one day around the time I graduated from high school. I was with a friend who WAS very into the show and had a hard time with people until the last couple years of school when he moved to my city. We had a chance encounter where we ran into Mr Rogers. My friend thanked him for always being there for him as a child, and apologized for bothering him. Mr Rogers said that there was nothing to apologize for and that he always loved to take a break to talk to his old neighbors and see what fine people they were growing up into. It felt like he would have stayed and chatted for as long as needed. At that age, I didn't think that anything public facing about anyone was real. Everything I could see about people was a lie, and it was up to me to sort it out if I cared enough. This was the first exchange that I can remember where I thought that some people really do just put themselves out there.

Probably bots did the downvoting. There are upvote bots that artificially upvote videos in exchange for money, but it's pretty hard to program a bot that behaves a lot like a human (with its timing and pattern of opening and interacting with new videos). CZcams filters out any likes that it thinks are from bots. So bots try to seem more human by downvoting some videos too. But they're pretty random in which videos they choose, so . . . they'll downvote something is nice as this video.

Like many people in their late 20's I grew up watching his show. I liked him but I never realized just what an amazing person he really was until I watched this. The fact that he was not only a minister but also one who was so accepting of everyone at a time when most religious people hated anyone who wasn't a straight white Christian is truly something to be admired and hopefully repeated.
Everything about Mister Rogers makes me smile so much. I do my best to practice his lessons in my own everyday life because his influence continues to be that important. I know I will never come close to measuring up to him, but that's yet another valuable lesson of his: be the best version of your own self that you can be. He was such a truly wonderful man and I just hope the younger generation gets a chance to get to know him even though he is physically gone. He is still so important to this world.

Angry Applesauce There are more than you think out there, I'm not one of them but I've known a few. It's such a rare thing to see someone like that achieve the level of fame Mr Rogers did and it's comforting that at least one of the persons many of us grew up watching was the genuine article.

I live in Latrobe, pa. I dated a woman whose mother was in school with mr Rogers. It was something to see her year book with him in it. Clowning around with the others in school. A real treat!
The video of Rogers testifying before John O. Pastore was very interesting. I know of Pastore's reputation and he was a cast iron SOB - but Rogers got to him and that's how he got $20 million.
Gulp. Wow. I grew up watching Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street, like most of my generation. I knew he was a great guy. As a little kid with a handicap, often made fun of by other kids, it meant a lot to me to be accepted and liked for who I was. When I grew old enough to understand I had gay feelings, I didn't know what to do about that, how to accept myself, and I was afraid to talk to my parents, probably rightly so. I grew up religious. I was so conflicted and didn't accept myself that I didn't make it through college the first time. It was years before I could come out and begin to come to terms with it. (Still working on that, I think.) -- So to know that Mr. Rogers, a childhood hero to so many, an educator and a minister, really was a good person, and not only that, but that he could be accepting and friendly and loving toward others, including people he knew were gay; for him to try to reach them with a message of love and acceptance...oh, gosh, this moved me so much. Thank you, guys. Thank you. I wish there could be more people as good as that. I wish my parents could have talked to me and accepted me. If they knew, they never once said so or said it was OK to be gay. I was surprised when I came out to find some friends were, uh, not really surprised, and more surprised and flummoxed because...I really wish I'd known before that they were fine with me being gay. I'd known some of them since high school. How I wish I'd really known then, and how I wish I could've come out back then, instead of living so terribly unhappy, denying my feelings and so alone. I wish everyone could be loved and accepted as they are, instead of judged for some small thing they cannot change about themselves. I wish I hadn't been so scared, and I wish I'd had friends who could see I was so scared and conflicted, and who would've helped ease that, including some first relationships. I think it would've helped tremendously, but I still don't know what really would've reached and convinced me it was OK, back then. I kept questioning whether God could really love me because I was gay. I now think I was using that as an excuse not to accept myself and begin to heal and live my life. So I missed out so much, because I stayed too isolated. I believe this is one of the worst things about not accepting gay people, is that it leaves them without any chance to love and be loved for who they are by nature. I believe it's wrong to do that to others or to yourself. We all need love and acceptance and the chance to be our truest selves and share love and friendship with others who need it. -- So, Thank you guys, for this video. You just helped more than you know.

Find ways every day to be positive towards yourself and others.
I meet people ( even just a cashier in a drive thru) and I make a point of being friendly and will compliment them on something. That may be just the thing they need at that particular moment. Even if it isn’t who doesn’t like compliments?
Ben W ik that feeling being an autistic kid growing up i was always picked on for being the "weird kid" but Mr Rogers taught me that there are good ppl in this world who would accept my quirky antics and yes there are ppl who accept u the way u r too man i myself is one of them. Ppl are like books the cover is weird but the story inside is something to always at least give a chance to read.

I swear this was so sweet. Hearing how accepting and pure he was to his black gay friend almost made me cry. He may have been doing things strange for his time, but that man marched on the correct side of history.
Why are you angry? Being gay wasn’t acceptable back then, and it’s barely been becoming more acceptable by today’s standards. It’s not “titling people,” people suffer because they are gay.

I remember watching him when I was a child. I always got sad when the show ended because I’d have to wait another day for a new episode.
And when I had kids I would sit and watch it with them.
I think I loved it so because it helped teach empathy for all and that is something I fervently believe in. That and no one is better than anyone else.

His family was very wealthy and donated The Rogers Memorial Pool to his and my city of Latrobe. His sister went to Rollins College an elite university in Florida and was as masculine as Fred was feminine. I stayed at one of their Summer homes because a friend of mines aunt worked as a cook there. Lovely people..

Neither did I, it's great that he was in favor of Fair Use. It seems that Mr. Rogers is one of the few public figures that the more you learn about them, they only seem to become better.
I was thinking about our current net neutrality problems too after the video, wouldn't he be a great guy to have in our corner of this fight? He would be saddened by a lot of what's on the internet, but I think he would be very much in favor of people of all types and backgrounds having equal access to the internet (both download and upload). We need to share this world, it can be a wonderful place if we just work together. The internet has the potential to be a great equalizer, a way to let people of all kinds share their stories with each other.
Yet, the company founded in his name, The Fred Rogers Company (formerly, Family Communications, Inc.) doesn't seem to mind copyright striking people who upload episodes of his show to online video services.

I'm so happy I grew up watching Mr. Rogers from the 70s till the end in the 90s. I was never to old to learn a hidden lesson and always fascinated on the videos of how things were made. I wish his shows were in reruns. Thank You, for a lifetime of memories Mr. Rogers

Ironically, Mr. Rogers began his mission in earnest starting in Canada by creating _The Children's Corner_ with Josie Carrey. When the show moved Stateside to WQED Pittsburgh as _Misterogers_ & then _Mister Roger's Neighborhood_ by 1968, the assistant puppeteer Mr. Rogers brought on _The Children's Corner_ to help him do the show, Ernie Combs, filled the void left in Canada from Mr. Rogers' return to the U.S. by becoming Canada's equivalent, _Mr. Dress-Up_ (meanwhile, unfortunately, as a result of Mr. Rogers' unassuming hidden success, he supplanted Josie Carrey as the on-camera host, as before, he just composed the music & performed the Make-Believe puppets like Daniel Striped Tiger & King Friday the 13th, whereas with the transition to _MRN_ for NET, which morphed into PBS, he did that on top of hosting the on-camera portion too, as Josie Carrey left the program).
As someone from Pittsburgh, Mr. Rogers is a local hero. If you ever come here, don't talk down about the Steelers, Pens or Mr. Rogers or you will get in a fight (you can talk crap about the Pirates, we all do).

I didn't expect one of your videos to make me cry. Mr. Rogers is such an important, incredible man, and I hope I can share his videos with my children one day.
The Mr. Rogers Neighborhood was a truly wonderful children's show. I grew up w/the show & later so did my children. Over the last few years or so Mr. Rogers filmed his show & moved on to work w/others, I felt so blessed to have had the honor of being somewhat of a penpal. (Yes, actual handwritten letters w/postage stamped envelopes) I was even more fortunate to have spoke with him on a few occasions, one of which after the last episode was in the can awaiting it's release. Fred Rogers WAS Mr. Rogers, the good neighbor. I'm sure my kids will run across the correspondences along with the autographed photo of Mr. Rogers & another of my favorite... Trolley.
It broke my heart to hear he had cancer then to hear the news of his death. It's sad, but we all know that wherever Mr. Rogers goes, he will always be a good neighbor.

There's a clip of him accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1997 Emmys. Rather than gushing over his own achievements in the beginning, he gives everyone present and watching 10 seconds of his time on the stage to think about THEIR own inspiring person who help to get them where they are. There were tears all over the room for his selflessness even in a moment of recognition.

All I have to do is think about that young man coming out in his wheelchair to present him with the award and I choke up. 🤗😰 Mr. Rogers was over 70 years old and literally climbed onto that stage to greet him.

Ravenwolf Foxtrack I remember it as well, even only being 9 years old. I sobbed, remember feeling at a loss of such a good person. Our favorite neighbor was gone. The world hasn't been quite the same since then but at least we can still remember him more than fondly and try to share his message of being good, wholesome people. And of course being true to yourself.
I was in my twenties when that happened and I cried like a baby.

Fred Rogers was a man way ahead of his time in many ways. We definitely need his wisdom and kindness in today's world.
My favorite stories are the Officer Clemmons ones, particularly the kiddie pool story. Such a truly Christ-like thing to do. And I bet you a thousand bucks he did it for no other reason than to be kind.

I was very sad listening to all the wonderful kind things he did to make the world a better, more inclusive tolerant place to live for ALL people, thinking how he would be actively hated and cancelled by many in today’s world by those that would have labeled him the ultimate example of “woke”.
What I wouldn’t give to have him alive today to see his response to kindness being demonized & legislated out of existence by people that love hate. We need a Mr. Rogers today now more than ever.

I miss Fred... This country needs him now more than ever before.... I had an opportunity to meet him once years ago at a silkscreen company I worked for. Think it was 1995-96. Something I will never forget to this day. We were doing shirts for his show and PBS in general.

Funny enough, _Mister Rogers' Neighborhood_ & _Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?_ (and its _Where in Time...?_ sequel) were distributed by WQED Pittsburgh (the _Carmen_ series was also co-distributed by WGBH Boston, although the show was taped in New York and, of course, was based upon the hit edutainment computer games of the same name to help American children learn geography & history).
Indeed, if she was a real person, Carmen Isabella Sandiego (her last name taken from the California city of the same name, although the ACME Detective Agency that ACME CrimeNet was based upon was headquarted in San Francisco & New York, with the second branch originating out of Vermont, the original home state of America's first president George Washington) wouldn't steal from Mr. Rogers (despite WQED Pittsburgh distributing both PBS series), even though the classy crime queen as the head of V.I.L.E (acronym for the Villain's International League of Evil) only stole for the cat-and-mouse thrill of the chase because she was a former top-level ACME agent who tired of it being too easy to capture the low-end crooks she put behind bars, so she flipped to the other side to become the greatest theif of all-time, but ultimately returning what she stole in the end, whether she herself was captured or not. 6:20 - 7:10 had me welling up a little. That kind of impact from one person's expression of caring for another shows all that is good in people. That made all the difference to the man who heard it, changing his life. Words matter. It doesn't take much to show how much you care, but it can mean the world to someone else.

my great-grandmother and i used to watch mr. rogers all the time when i was little. i lived with them (my parents were/are divorced) and my mom worked a lot so my great-grandparents would watch me all the time. my grandma and i would watch pbs together: mr. rogers, lambchop (i was reeeeaaaally little when this was on tho so i barely remember it), sesame street, and reading rainbow.

The problem with a lot of the Christian religions is their over analysis and focussing on the wrong parts of the Bible.
The only person in the Bible worth listening to is Jesus. As I'm sure Mr. Rogers would agree, Jesus said, "Love your neighbour as you would love yourself!"
Of the 895 episodes, the week long "conflict" series was only aired once and never again. This was where the Neighborhood of Make-believe almost goes to war against another neighborhood over a misunderstanding. The episodes were Fred Rogers' commentary on the cold war at that time and a subtle plea for peace.
It actually aired in reruns for at least a few years...I distinctly remember seeing it in early 1990.
Mr. Rogers made such a difference in the world and in our personal lives. His songs still sometimes play in my head from time to time. Now being 25, I hope to find me a good man like Fred Rogers... how lucky one would be to even have a friend like him.
