Michael Jordan locks down Glen Rice - 1998 NBA ECSF

  • At age 35 in his last year as a Bull, Jordan came 4th place in DPOY behind Mutombo, Payton, and Robinson. While Pippen primarily defended Rice, who only had 2 good performances - Games 3 and 5 - in the 1998 ECSF, Jordan did a great job as the secondary defender.
    Jordan blocked Rice's first shot attempt over him and denied him off the ball on multiple occasions. He did a good job of staying in front of Rice, who only scored 2 points on Jordan in the series off of a jumpshot in Game 5. There were some possessions in Games 1 and 4 where Jordan guarded Rice, but in which neither of the two were involved in the play - these were not included in the video.
    As luck would have it, 2 of the games in which Jordan defended Rice more often (Game 1 and 4) were only available in poor quality, whereas the 2 games in which Jordan only defended Rice for 1 possession apiece (Game 2 and 3) were available in decent quality.

    MJ at 35 defends like a DPOY. While some say there's this dude who's supposedly better than MJ, can guard all 5 positions, but in reality is 309th in the league in defense at only age 33. smh

      People who say LeBron is better than Jordan just have tunnel vision upon the offensive side of the game. LeBron has made some nice blocks, but Jordan made amazing blocks and more.

    • @ej4346
      @ej4346 Před 5 lety +12

      E BO, here's a defensive stat for you. MJ DPOY = 1; LeBron = 0. All Defensive 1st Team, MJ = 9, LeBron = 5 (*MJ should've been 11), lead league in Steals, MJ = 3, LeBron = 0. And if we talking bout WIN shares, MJ = 6 Wins, LeBron = 6 Losses. That's all the WIN shares that matter. 😂

    • @nobodytouchesmj9780
      @nobodytouchesmj9780 Před 5 lety +11

      Also before 2002/03, there were no 2nd or 3rd place votes for DPOY, so all of Jordan's DPOY votes in his career were from 1st place votes alone.
      Outside of 2013, less than 1/3 of LeBron's DPOY points in any other year he received them came from 1st place votes. So because 2nd/3rd place votes make up the vast majority of DPOY points that LeBron has received in his career, most of his DPOY votes would not even have been possible to obtain in Jordan's time.
      In addition to winning the 1988 DPOY, Jordan was
      2nd place in 1993 DPOY to Hakeem
      3rd place in 1992 DPOY to Robinson and behind Rodman
      7 times top 5 in DPOY
      - tied-most of any non-Center with Rodman
      - behind Mutombo (9), Robinson (9), and Hakeem (8)
      10 times top 8 in DPOY
      - tied-most of any player with Hakeem, Duncan, Garnett
      All of which is especially impressive since this was built entirely off of 1st place DPOY votes alone.

      @bcjclj Před 5 lety +5

      E BO he should’ve made 11 first team all defense. In 86-87 MJ recorded 200 steals and 100 blocks. First time in history it was ever done, and he didn’t make first or second team all defense that year. He should’ve won DPOY that year.

    What's so amazing about Jordan and why he is hands down the best player ever: Not only was he the best offensive player in the league, but was the best perimeter defender in the league: still dominating both sides of the ball at the age of 35 as the best player in the league.
    MJ dominated a big man era as a guard. Amazing

I'd honestly give the edge to Pip but MJ was still a DAWG while giving boys 31 a night lol. IMO Worm was also a better defender than MJ. Imagine one of the greatest defenders ever being 3rd best on the team. They were a superteam.
