As someone who has an immensely strong attachment to this game (and the entire series as a whole), I think the game is an example of a 1 hour game that delivers so much good in that timespan, to make it worth revisiting endlessly. I replayed the entire game to 100% just recently and I still feel the same way about it that I did when I first played it in 2013, so I still love this game even without the rose-tinted glasses. My favorite games are the ones that I can just chill out to and have a great time regardless of how many times I play it, PaRappa is no exception for me.
That being said, it was really interesting to see how someone would view this game with no nostalgic attachment. I completely understand why the 1 hour length might turn off newer players since most games nowadays last about 10 hours or more. The benefit of a short game is being able to revisit it in its entirety without feeling fatigued. While a 10 hour game can take so long to experience everything that it’ll sometimes just be a one-and-done deal, especially if it leaves a sloppy lasting impression or if the game in general is just plain bad.
As for the input thing, I’ve had full experience with every version and have played each one on repeat. I can say that the PS1 and PSP versions don’t have any input lag, unless you’re playing on an emulator or if your HDTV doesn’t have game mode turned on, assuming it supports game mode. The input issues on PS4, I don’t think are nearly as bad, but Stage 4 on there is the only instance I can agree that it’s worse.
Really enjoyed the video, was worth a watch.

I share the philosophy that a 1 hour experience can be just as rewarding as a 10 hour one. I'm not really of the mind that the sheer amount of something dictates quality, especially when it comes to video games. I got a lot of charm out of my 2ish hours of playtime with Parappa, and it still feels distinct in my memory. I'd rather be left wanting more of that experience than wishing it was over, but that still won't necessarily stop me from wanting something more out of the game. In Parappa's case, I could've stuck by this gameplay loop and the overall design for at least 5-8 hours and been completely satisfied.
As far as input goes, I didn't specify in the video but I tried the game on multiple sources including a 1ms response time monitor and still ran into the same issue with the damn chicken level. I'm pretty sure the remaster is just bugged and they couldn't be asked to patch it. Ah well, it made for a fun segment of the video.
Thanks for checking out the video and for the detailed response, I really appreciate it!

Appreciate the support a ton! I can't lie, it would be nice to reach a bigger audience someday. Really though, what's most important to me is that I make what I love and enjoy the process. So far I've been able to do that and, even though my following is small, I'm happy that literally anybody (including you) is connecting with what I'm creating. At the end of the day, whether I blow up or not, as long as I'm stoked on what I'm making overall then I'm good!

@@moniqueperkinsmp It is strange to see things fade in and out of the collective unconscious. I think the memes do show a level of appreciation to a degree, though. They're obviously played for laughs, but they're made with such detail in replicating the look, sound, and feel of the game. So much so, that I think they manage to have the same level of charm. I don't think people would go to those lengths if it wasn't coming from a place of love! Plus, they're the only reason I finally checked out the game in the first place. Hopefully they're introducing more people to the series the way they did for me.

Funny. I'm a year late. But I nonetheless I just searched for a Parappa the Rapper review after getting the Daffy Duck video recommended you mentioned at 0:15.
It was, however, more out of curiosity how Parappa's speech was constructed, and whether the author of that parody video did some voice splicing to make Parappa say his words. Or whether there might even be something like a text to speech engine for his voice.

Things do tend to cycle, but it's hard for me to imagine rhythm games will ever coming back full swing and be as relevant and popular as they were in the early to mid 2000's. Who really knows though? Maybe the memes prove the world is ready for more rhythm games!

Someone needs to make a spiritual successor to this kinds of games, as there is nothing like them to this day, at least to my understanding.
I had an idea for a rhythm game inspired by Vib Ribbon, that uses a Y2K visual style with white foreground and changing colour visualiser background. It would use parkour style movement that would use the face buttons for multiple tasks based around four various types of movement: Jump, kick, grab and trick. There would be sections where you would be up in the air with angel wings, navigating through the clouds with flappy bird type controls. As well as section when your underwater where you're a merman or mermaid with swimming controls of modern Donkey Kong Country, going through rings and dodging obstacles. The health system would be measured by your characters style, which would reflect your characters look. Low on health would have it look worn and filthy, but increasing the all rounded health would have it bling with style.
Unfortunately, I cannot think of a catchy tutorial music for this game, but I don't intend it to be nearly as scary as the source of inspiration. Seriously, I feel like I'm the only one who always gets the heebie jeebles when I hear that tutorial song! That's why I'm the only one who is glad Caddicarus doesn't do those fun facts anymore!

To reply to the title, probably it is worth paying attention to now and remembering. I loved it so much when I was about 7 or 8 years old until the disc got scratched and I couldn't play it anymore. I loved that game so much to the point that I almost cried when it came out on ps5 and I was able to play it. Great experience for me. Overall, I believe that depending on how much you have history with it or your enjoyment of it helps you determine: Should it be remembered?
Bonus: (I think that the reason Parappa's name is what it is, is because Parappa means paper thin.)

With the HDTV Lag i recommend you listen to the music and the timings of the teachers singing so you can copy them easily.
You mightve noticed that the button prompts gets big before the PaRappa icon on the top gets to them the HDTV Lag is the reason why its that way so dont press any buttons before the button prompts get big.

As a Parappa player from 1997 I can honestly say the remaster is definitely harder when it comes to timing. I can free-style on every level in the original with ease but the remaster is much less forgiving .

PaRappa the rapper is such a great series that it really should have a proper the rapper three or maybe another spinoff like I’m jammer and lammy but about the remaster yeah, the remaster was just typically the PSP version of it with just upscaled characters. Just a lazy remastered from Sony because it was it’s 20 of anniversary and it was just a cash grab and they obviously should’ve fix the delay issue with an update but they never did it. I hope that maybe we can get at least a better remastered or proper the rapper three because it seems like it is getting more popular.

I was first exposed to Parappa the Rapper several years ago from watching a livestream, but I didn’t really get into the series until about a week before the Daffy meme existed. I’ve pretty much seen all official content for Parappa now. I’ve played Parappa 1 and 2 and Um Jammer Lammy, I’ve watched the anime, and even listened to the promotional albums for Um Jammer Lammy.
It’s just... a damn shame, because Parappa really DID deserve better. Yes, what we’ve gotten is a super charming and loveable series, but after Parappa 2 we just got... nothing. I think Parappa has a lot of potential for more, but yet he was just abandoned so suddenly. And, having more for such a charming and positive series would be great to have, especially now.
But I guess in that sense, I’m glad Parappa’s making a resurgence, even if it’s just because of some silly memes. Maybe we’ll see more of Parappa in the future.

    • @meeptop
      @meeptop  Před 2 lety +3

First off, thanks so much for watching and for the heartfelt comment!
Second, I personally think the memes are a step in the right direction. The unfortunate, yet obvious, truth about Parappa and many other franchises like it is that it's all about money. I couldn't find any official sales figures for Um Jammer Lammy and Parappa the Rapper 2, but I'd be willing to bet that Um Jammer Lammy underperformed and Parappa the Rapper 2 sold significantly worse than its predecessor. Those factors, on top of the failed Kickstarter for Project Rap Rabbit, are really what drives publishers and investors away from the series. You have to be able to prove there's an audience there that is willing to spend money on the product. The memes are showing Parappa to multiple generations of people, possibly reinvigorating old fans and creating new ones. If someone is really smart they'll probably take action fast and announce a new Parappa game, because there's now a whole new market of people willing to spend. The only reason I don't see this happening is because memes are extremely temperamental. The meme is already at the tail end of its life, so if they wait much longer it'll be too late. Corporations haven't really figured out a way to capitalize on memes yet, at least not to full effectiveness (a good thing, imo). I just hope something comes out of all of this, even if it's just Rodney Greenblat and Masaya Matsuura getting stoked that their creation is still resonating!
