How The PaRappa Anime Was Saved TWICE From Becoming Lost Media

- This is a video where I talk about the PaRappa The Rapper Anime and how it was saved from becoming lost media. The story behind this Anime is pretty fascinating, so even if you're not interested in it, I'd highly recommend watching this video, since multiple lessons can be taken from it. Regardless, I hope it does the Anime some justice, though it surely does not do it the justice it deserves, but a lot of points are in fact proven.

Hey guys! Hope you all enjoy this video! It took a lot of work to complete, but working on it reminded me why I had fought so hard to save this Anime all those years ago. Once again, MASSIVE thanks to ALL the people that have contributed actively or passively for this Anime. Now for some useful links you might need.
If you want to watch the Anime for yourself, all Episodes are avaiable on CZcams *(VHS quality)* via the *DefendPTR* channel that I created back in 2016. • czcams.com/users/DefendPTR
If you are a fan of PaRappa the Rapper (especially its Anime), then make sure to join the *PaRappa Anime Fan Club* Discord server here • discord.com/invite/FAA5v2Pehv
Thanks again. Sincerely, Gonicked. ★
yooo and I was thinking too about watching his anime
if you think about it: there could be an alternate universe where the anime was indeed lost.
reeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
This was YOUR VIDEO?? I had no idea!
i am genuinely so glad this anime wasnt lost because its absolutely one of my favorites especially as someone who is a cartoon enthusiast
I WANT A PARAPPA ANIME REBOOT + New Game
Preach
Me too!
YES
SAMEEE
That would be cool
1:39 Minor mistake, the PaRappa The Rapper anime DID air outside of Japan on the channels Anime+ and Animax CEE in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania. Although it was only aired in Japanese with subtitles in the aforementioned countries' respective languages.
Do you have evidence for this?
@@lauluis1mii124 The channel that uploaded the original recording from Anime+ Hungary got deleted recently, but the bumper and intro from it seem to have been reuploaded.
Bumper: czcams.com/video/VbIfx4MP6aM/video.html
Intro: czcams.com/video/HYtIjhBlQj4/video.html
Ummm... Your evidence doesn't show the dub! Please try again!
@@lauluis1mii124 It wasn't dubbed, it was subtitled. And as I've stated the original uploader's channel has been deleted alongside the original upload of the video. Also, the aforementioned promo and intro that have been reuploaded are parts from the recording, I think that proves enough.
@@Parkinski27 this is the problem they just air the anime in different languages just with subtitles!
Lost media scares me but atleast parappa was saved twice from becoming lost
I'm not a fan of anime but this deserves to be popular.
Same
Does it? I mean, its absolutely fascinating just by the mere fact it exists, but as an actual show it's completely godawful
its like "when your in the group chat but not in the conversation"
Shut up, you don't care about people's hard work. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's bad.
@@theepic1944 I never said that, I just said that I think the same thing, I know about that
there should be a new phobia about something you love turning into lost media
Imagine if the show did get an English Dub with the actual VAs from the games, that would be awesome. Also, I’m curious to know if there will be a project to actually make an English Dub of the show from the fans? 🤔
If there were I’d be glad to try out to be part of the voice cast!
I remember someone made a fandub of the first episode but that's about it.
I bet that 4kids would be involved with the parappa anime
Random fact: it is known that the anime DID get an official latin spanish dub once, but it's totally lost and the people searching for it's barely making any progress...
Dude it's fake!
@@lauluis1mii124 what, really???? They even got the studio who "made" the dub ._.
It explains a lot tbh-
no way parappa in spanish??? where??
@@alieneko_nyo and there's entire wikis to make up the possible future sequels of popular Disney movies that document everything down to the transcripts of the "scripts" (which is just awful fanfiction)
Anyone can say anything on the internet
I thought we agreed years ago that it was fake.
Yo?? You're the guy who made the Defend PTR channel? Can I say I'm extremely grateful for all your hard work? This anime introduced me to the franchise and I adore this show to bits! Thank you again!
One time when I was sick I watched all the episodes of the anime and later thought it was a fever dream, now I realize it wasnt
They're just 30 episodes
TyphoonBling and I were good friends; It's a shame that he did, indeed, had to take a step back from the PaRappa fanbase, particularly due to events transpiring on the PaRappa message board we were in charge of during 2007-2009. It was called Pink Milk N Munchies.
I'd be happy to divulge more information if anyone is interested. I do recall that translating the anime into subbed was one of his side-projects on the message board, and he wanted to make his channel popular.
I would love to hear more about TyphoonBling. I really miss his AMV like stuff and PaRappa Meme Videos he posted. I also remember him getting into Lucky Star at some point. He had a video titled "Lucky Star Balls of Steel" and for many years I thought that was the actual Name of the Show.
If there is any chance to see archived versions of some of his videos that would be amazing. I miss his Intro with clips of Katy and Paula with some female voice saying something like "I SEE HO... HOTAI" or something like that.
Also remember his Avatar was of Katy in the Green Outfit from the Sports Episode and he had a Kat Station TV Banner from the Matto Vs. Paula Episode
@@TheBLBShow Unfortunately after a lot of time passed, we eventually lost contact. This was at a time where archiving videos wasn't really all that common as CZcams was still fairly new; People assumed videos would stay up barring the website itself going down.
It did seem like he distanced from the PaRappa stuff partially due to that drama but mostly due to his personal life getting busy with other obligations, including army deployment and his career.
I was invited to that forum back in the day, and participated a little bit in fact, but got a little bored of it and moved on after not too long. The fact that it had a major drama go down is seriously news to me.
@@howiieb A good chunk of it happened adjacent to the forum, I.E. on DeviantArt, CZcams, etc.
What disappointed me is that Parappa only Rapped like, twice in the whole anime.
No way!!! You're defendPTR??
I remember about 1-2 years ago I had a huge obsession with parappa
I even made a separate channel for parappa content (sadly is gone now)
But I remember watching the anime religiously
It was so cute and I cant imagine how sad it would have been to see it gone :[
I even reanimated a scene from the anime too
Thank you for keeping this anime alive
I remember watching the anime back in 2017, but I didn't know this became lost media twice back then.
I remember stumbling on a random anime episode of Parappa on youtube and checking the channel out only to realize, that it is a preserve channel trying to keep the anime alive and known while on CZcams.
I kinda figured it was a difficult task keeping a whole library of lost media alive, since copyrights and such. But I am happy that they are still up and going
i have fond memories of playing um jammer lammy at a friend's house in high school, and that's how i learned about PTR later. to this day, they are some of my favorite games. i was around when the anime came out and didn't realize it was in danger of becoming lost media! thanks for all your hard work to keep it alive.
i remember back when the chinese video was super popular and i was OBSESSED with parappa, your uploads of the anime honestly had a huge impact on me since its a genuinely fun show. thanks for archiving everything!!
All I have to say is thank you so much for what you did all those years ago. We all appreciate it
Saved a video game anime adaption from becoming lost media... Nothing that'll get in the history books. Or even be remembered in 100 years. But you left a positive mark on your fellow human beings. You enriched their lives. You saved a work of art that the people who enjoyed it were given a common language with. Be happy.
Thanks so much for you and your team restoring this work of art. Your effort is greatly appreciated :)
I can’t say how happy I am that you’re why this anime isn’t lost, I remember discovering your channel in 2017 when a lot of the episodes hadn’t been subtitled yet but was at the height of my Parappa obsession, so I watched it without caring about the fact it was in Japanese, I had no idea that it was nearly lost media at one point, I don’t think the community can thank you enough
thx to this anime, this show cured my depression back in 2018, since its nearing its anniversary when i first discovered this anime, im gonna rewatch all of the episodes for nostalgia sake.
Never have I expected that PTR anime had such complicated history of being lost and found again!
Thank you for telling it's story and keeping it from becoming a myth .
One of my favorite animes. Surprised you didn't mention that it was fully fansubbed in English in (2019-2020? I forget exactly when) on your channel. I remember at the time having just started learning Japanese, and having ambitions of fansubbing it one day, but others got to it first lol.
this fucking anime never had lammy for some reason
0:01 parapuh da rappuh
I freakin glad this anime didin't lost, while it's not the best anime I watched it's still great to see everyone who contributed to keep this media not becoming obscure
I recommend uploading the episodes to the internet archive everyone! (Also I suggest looking for broadcast recordings)
An underrated jewel of the animation indeed. Even If I am not a big Parappa The Rapper I actually enjoyed the series, being pretty good to watch and relax.
The only downside of DefendPTR's uploads is that *the audio fucking stops at random times*
The only reason for this is because the videos were at risk of being taken down for copyright reasons since the anime uses licensed songs
I’m usually not a big fan of anime but i LOVE the parrapa anime
I was waiting on defendptr to be mentioned, until the big twist happened during the climatic ending of the video. I'm glad this is still going, and with 2020 being a good year for parappa content wise (probably just my opinion).
i downloaded all 30 episodes to my pc, making sure i keep them safe :)
I still rememeber some Parappa Anime uploads- probably from the DefendPTR era. Not as I saw the anime, but it showed up around the time Caddicarus did a video on it, so seeing the recovery efforts is neat.
Man this brings me back. I am glad that the anime was fully recovered. Thank you for helping out on preserving it!
Couldn't have done it without your help Winkle! Your recovery of Episode 27 back in September 2013 gave me and many others a lot of hope that we'd see the Anime in its full glory - and indeed we did! ★
I like how the games are targeted towards children, but, the anime goes all out with the swearing.
thats because in the japanese language, swear words dont exist. Just rude ways to talk.
@@hanniamartinezadame8125Take notes, western society
I'm glad it wasn't lost!
with how popular the games were at the time, i'm honestly suprised that no companies thought to make an english dub.
This story is super admirable and thank you for all you've done including creating the DefendPTR Channel!! I think many people including me would've never known about the anime being a thing without all your work.
the anime always comforts me in a way
and i think im in love with the op song
I wouldnt mind it being only japanese and not a english dub because i would still know
Even tho I don't speak Japanese I don't prefer English dub
Thanks so much. As a PaRappa fan, I'm happy that I could reunite with this anime on CZcams. 🙏
thank you for your awesome work.
I so glad this anime wasn’t lost because this anime is too young to become lost.
I just want a blu-ray release.
Part of me hopes efforts like this could go into archiving the Ape Escape anime too, but the fact PtR got fully archived is a miracle in of itself.
I remember trying to find this anime again and again and being happy being able to watch it again a few years back. Thanks for your work!
I can notice the effort you put in this video. Congratulations!!
You and all the others that worked on recovering everything are absolute legends
god this is so cool to learn about!! i remember the major contributors from when i first got into the series in 2012 and was trying to scour youtube for all the episodes, surreal to hear someone else talk about them. thank you so much for your help in preserving this show!
Very late, but thanks for featuring me in this! was magic to find that 3rd episode when all seemed lost!
So glad to see the whole series recovered and out there for others to see! Can't wait to see what the future holds!
Damn I wish this anime got a English sub or something. The few episodes I watched with subtitles were amazing. I love it
I never knew you made the Defend PTR Channel! But thank you so much for making that channel, if it weren't for you. I never would've gotten to see the Parappa Anime.
You're a true hero to us all
I remember watching the anime with my brother in 2008 from Typhoonbling's channel! I had no idea that the anime was ever on the verge of being lost media!
Hopefully one of these days Discotek licenses the Parappa anime, they have a track record of licensing older cartoons or anime based on video game properties.
Great video and editing! I haven't yet seen the Parappa anime (and I'm a big PaRappa fan), but I'll check it out once I can.
Who wants to help me make Parappa the rapper 3
I just want to thank you again. I was and still am obsessed with Parappa The Rapper since I got to play the demo as a kid and it's what got me into music. I remember freaking out as a kid finding out there was an anime and watching all the episodes in parts and watching the funny ass videos the fandom made and your channel helped me put my friends onto the show because they never understood why I was so obsessed.
Wow this is fascinating! Thank you for all of your guys' hard work! I'm so grateful that all of this wasn't lost to time!
The fact that this show was originally intended to be for teen and older audiences with its humor kind of makes me want a reboot of it with that original intention behind it. Still it’s crazy that we got a Parappa anime at all.
I'd love if you made a video about episode 28, I agree that it is definitely the best episode! Thank you so much to you and all the people that helped to save the anime, your efforts are greatly appreciated.
I tapped parappa’s name into CZcams as I heard my daughters playing video that included the driving test rap,my copy of game has a crack and won’t play😢,id never heard of anime, now I love it!
holyflip- YOU made that PTR channel?? ive been subbed to that youtube page since 2018! i think i even made a comment on one of the anime episodes, i dont remember
dude you are a friggin LEGEND- i never knew parappa had an anime until that channel popped up ont time when i first got into the series that year
hats off to you man!!
So you’re the legendary DefendPTR... Thank you man, from the bottom of my heart.
What the hell is up with that weird Bonnie the Bunny lookin’ thing that is called Gaster (not to be confused with the one from Undertale)? That has no right to exist.
To be honest, it was a real missed opportunity for them not to have dubbed the anime. If they would have made a joint-deal maybe with someone tv company in the west, it could have been a hit. It's really sad that we probably won't ever get this dubbed completely, or even a revival or reboot of some sorts.
I LOVE PARPPA THE ANIME AND THE GAME!
Very cool lore
ah, so you were behind the defendptr channel! that's the way i first watched the anime! thank you and everyone else for preserving this anime!
Thank you so much for your efforts! I would be a very different person if I never got to experience this series
I'm glad this video came out when I started caring about the Parappa anime again lol
Brings me back to when I first joined the fandom back in 2015 haha
Anyways this video is absolutely amazing and probably one of the best I've watched this year! Great job, man!
A long time ago, I collabbed with a friend to hopefully produce a fanmade English dub of episode 1 of Parappa.
However the project was slowly forgotten and shelved. I actually still have a script of the fandub I wrote for it.
underrated as heck video
i never knew how much history there was behind the anime omg :O THANK YOU though, the parappa anime is very special to me and many others, i'm glad it's been archived (also 14:53 , that's me, omg!)
A user who goes by "Plague Cure" has a full playlist archive as well, they're a good friend of mine and have even tried going far as unmarking any episodes flagged as children's videos (they haven't with a select few but they're still here regardless). More accurate subbing is also slowly being produced.
So now I'd like a documentary on the 2016 anniversary-based series of shorts "PJ Berri no mogumogu munyamunya". That show's story is rather interesting, and user "PaRappa the Hat" can tell you most of his experience with it.
My side of the story was that I was interested in searching for info on that show since my integration in the fandom in 2017, but did nothing about it. Until when one day, over 2 years ago, I decided to go on intense lost media research binges during the freetimes at school as a small hobby. After a long while and several days to weeks, I stumbled across a page on the green Lost Media Wiki site explaining the history of findings in regards, and it also had a link to a page on Mega hosting a video of the entire first season, which contained the 11 lost episodes that Redditor "Speedbeatz" found, and therefore I could download the video for archival. Then PaRappa the Hat just so happened to come to my channel to compliment me on a video with a pair of singing fish and so it was the perfect opportunity to tell him I had the episodes after my research journey. I sent a link to him via Google Photos so he could take and upload it (he can somehow bypass the Japanese YT copyright systems, and that's how he was able to upload the first 9). Of course, he was beyond excited and asked if he could put it up, to which I happily agreed, and now everyone's struggling to look for someone to sub this anime as well. Another great milestone indeed.
But just remember in all this, I wasn't the one who found the rest of it. Again, it was Speedbeatz whom officially took the major step. I only downloaded the video to archive and send it to Hat for him to upload to the public. So all credits go to only those 2
Beautiful stuff. I'm always happy to see people so dedicated to preserving lost media.
1:40 parapa the rapper dancing crisp quality 2022
i love the parappa anime. thank you for your work :D
I want to say a huge thank you for saving the anime from becoming a lost media. This video with the backstory behind the long way to save the anime is also very interesting, thanks for that too. Btw: Coincidentally i found recently a small CZcams channel called "Mei_is_Beautiful" that have the first two Episodes dubbed in english. Did you know that so what exist?
I added one of the preserved episodes on CZcams to my watch later list last week and got recommended this video today.
I think it's interesting, given how none of the rest of your content seems to be stuff I'd watch, that the algorithm still ties uploads of the anime to your vid.
I don't have any meaningful contributions to make to the discussion, just thought it was neat.
Really great video!!! One minor nitpick is that calling it "lost media" is kiiinda a stretch if it was released on dvd (most? all? episodes?????), but that's nitpicky so i don't think it really matters. I remember watching the episodes on either DefendPTR or another channel some years ago, gives off good memories!
I watched the entire series in Japanese and i loved it
I don’t even understand Japanese
Nice video man
i would love an english dub of these
I watched the full show!! Twice! (Non subbed version voice over)
This go real deep real fast
the only anime i actually watch. im so glad it didn't turn into lost media.
I can't believe people are barley learning about the anime. I can't blame you because of how obscure it is. I do recommend the shorts crash bandicoot and parappa
0:20Correction: The song is called toasty buns, not tasty buns.
I actually found out about Parappa from the anime, it was aired on animax in Romania. I actually downloaded the episodes and put them on my ipod nano so I could watch it in school.
It also aired on Anime+ and Animax CEE in the Czech Republic and Hungary, but currently only a bumper and incomplete recording of an episode from a Hungarian airing is available online, although a Czech promo was on CZcams at one point.
YOU SAVED THE PRAPPA RAPPER ANIME AND POSTED IT ALL..? OMG
Fun fact this anime aired in hungary, czech republic and romania, with subtitles through Animax it is still in japanese though
in the era right now where anything late90s early 2000s is big again its time for This to get a proper reboot and a full Dubbed of the Original Anime.
i remember watching this anime on canal 5 mexico because i am mexican the anime aired their and it is lost so......... however i felt in love with it
What do you think are the best examples of "found media" i.e. lost media that nobody even knew were lost until they were found years later and preserved.
I totally skipped the Time Period between the dissapearence of typhoon bling and the rise of Parappa with fries.
For me it was always Episode 24 that was the "Lost one" which is why I got DVD Stage 7 in 2009.
Then got Stage 5 in probably 2012 and Stage 6 on Christmas 2014 (which I still have a video of on my channel) The remaining ones I got on the following birthdays and christmases except for stage 4 which I am still missing to this day.
I am the opposite. I remember this anime aired in tv on the hungarian anime channel A+ when I was little and I didn't know until now there was a Parappa videogame, so for me that was the new information. Great video, thanks for making it. 🙂
Parappa is my fav rhythm game / anime fr
This anime was aired in czech republic too, under czech station named a+
I watched all episodes it was really good!
